Hi all. Can I just say hello to everyone who's new and everyone in the nursery who's going to be new? I can? ok. Hello. I'm knitting a scarf for David. I'm thinking maybe me and archel should go into business. Or maybe not. I hate grungers. Really. They are even meaner than teenyboppers sometimes. And most of them have like Kurt Cobain's suicide note printed on their jackets like it was cool that he shot himself. And always standing in groups, with like blue hair and black eyeliner like someone's punched them, going on about how courtney killed him. Maybe he just happened to be writing a suicide note for a laugh, and he was sucking thoughtfully on the barrel of his gun, when it went off, and he thought he might as well finished it while he bled to death, so people wouldn't laugh at him for being so careless, and instead walk around with obituaries to him on their jacket, even though they were only about 9 years old when he died. I had a belle and sebastian related dream. I was in the mens toilets of G2, being sick and mick cooke was holding back my hair to stop my from getting vomit on it. Then chris geddes gave me a glass of water. Strange. I think that i shouldn't eat chocolate before I go to bed. I hate orange flavour Tunes. They don't help you breath more easily, they poison you and bloody stink. I phoned up the tunes coldline. Has anyone read the stuart david interview in Melody Maker? It's not that good (though i've not read nalda said yet), but there's a photo of him grinning like a maniac and the caption above his photo reads "Stuart David chuckles with glee as he hears a rumour that the Booker Prize is to be decided by an e mail vote.". Well I found it funny. .....got to get awaaaaaaaay (Nice tune Sean, btw). Hi Individuals .....and now for a meaningless heading.... AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (The Jam Version) My friend just phoned me up and told me that the Bassist and Drummer from The Smiths and Aziz from The Stone Roses played a secret gig in my local last night. Only 20 people were in the audience. Aziz had 8 guitars with him, including a glass one which showed a flying dragon when he banged it. He also played another with his teeth. They played Smiths, Roses and some Ian Brown Songs (including My Star). Afterwards, my friend had a drink with the three of them, got their autographs and were talking to them until 3am. He would have told me earlier but ive had no phone for 2 weeks so he couldnt contact me. I missed that because stupid BT sent their engineer around at 11:30 instead of 10:30. It was my 18th birthday as well yesterday. So i'd just like to say that i think i am Officially the unluckiest person on earth. Well, bind my wrists and call me Suzy, it's been a funny old week. First up, we're told that the Antarctic's gone all melty and by 2200 the first floor flat above the butcher's on Glossop High Street will be the only dry place left in Britain. Unless I can decorate the place myself, I'd rather drown. The Minister For The Next Ice Age (a former associate of mine: we used to co-edit Gehirnglasschlacke in the 70s - "the magazine that talks to people as if they were stupid") was forced to resign in some disgrace and no little confusion. I told him to give up the booze and the one-night stands, find some quiet little town and forget about everything. I used to think it was so easy... Secondly, I carelessly threw a tin of Sun-Pat at Isobel Campbell at a fun-fair and knocked all her teeth out. Every single one of them - even those hard-to-reach fellas at the back. I think *they* went down her throat. No, hang on - I've never been to a fun-fair in my life. Oi, Starry - are you beaming stuff into my head again or what ? Stop it - it makes my nose tingle. Onto happier matters... Though the Belles have been quiet for a while (too long), their influence continues to spread, slipping its tender tendrils into the most unexpected places. Three gems I'm currently giving headspace to bear the Mark of Murdoch: "Hospice Epiphany" by Malediction Gnostic - their third release for the OxBlood imprint, a single-sided 10" of amusical chaos, asphyxiating dread and tape-death. Three minutes and forty-six seconds in, the clammy fog lifts briefly and a grief-stricken bassoon chews its way across the stereo image. It pauses, distressingly clogged, and a cardigan zipper can be heard. "nu beleef" by Nixxy Cashwreck & DJ Dispute - a shockingly intense slab of Granular ShamGlitch, which seduces as it unravels. Sure to be a big noize with the Controv set for the Teresa Gorman sample alone, it's opaque slink-beat lets up just long enough for a young male voice to syrup-coo an ode to a salesgirl at BHS. The flip is the usual fleshy cackola from DuckDuct - avoid. "Drizzle On The Fens" by Ghyllis Sourhardy - at first I thought I'd struck gold: that rare 1977 Sanguine pressing of the late tenor-flautist's most miserable work ? The one withdrawn shortly after release following concerns over the insufficiently dour sleeve-art ? No - it was the reissue, lovingly packaged on SupaDense vinyl, complete with Sourhardy's original essay "Friends are just strangers you've learned to hate". But the '98 bonus track - recorded shortly before Sourhardy's fatal encounter with a puma - reeks of bouncy trumpet and choppy guitar, hesitant recorder and nervous cello. It's a lovely, sunny piece, though one is reminded of the endless indeterminacy of meaning here and there. How gutted was I (?)whilst watching MY Mr Benn video with my nephew this week to discover that it was in fact that hairy gambling man Ray Brooks who did the voice overs for the Adventurous One, and not silky-smooth velvet toned Mr Briers. It's my Dad's birthday today. He is 59, which makes him older than me, of which I am glad. Brad...I hope the aforementioned shampoo bottle wasn't a family-sized Head and Shoulders. What's with all this current affairs talk on the list? I haven't been so well informed since I stopped watching John Craven's Newsround. Speaking of news, THAI NEWS: Peter Withe's boys have an intersting group in the World Cup qualifiers. They face fellow jungle dwellers Sri Lanka, kebab inventors Lebanon and Pakistan, run like a madam's brothel by our old friend General. How *do* madams run brothels? With a rodd of iron? I've been looking through my vast fanzine library, fifteen hundred Chickfactors, one The Horn, a bag of goodies from Da Dook. All very nice. But there's a gap where Trousercuts 3 should be. I feel like J.R. Hartley. Where is Trousers? If you ask me, he spends all day mooning over his special friend. I notice he hasn't been generating many column inches lately either. Pete Townshend of the 70s WHO has been generating lots of column inches. Apparently you can get him to write a song about you, based on some kind of 70s computer output thing. Obviously it's no good getting him to write one about Sister Disco, because he already has, the legendary "Sister Disco". Our sworn enemies on the Indie Pop list got one written about them by Momus, so perhaps we should get one for the whole list done by Pete Townshend. It'll cost loads of money, but just imagine the look on their faces when we get one written by a bonafide rock legend and they have to make do with one by indie underachiever Maurice Mus. Matthew Fletcher is credited in the acknowledgements section of The Oxford Dictionary of New Words. How did he wangle that? It laso features anorak pop, anoraky, anorakish and anoraknophobia. <if this has come through already just hit delete - my email's playing up again> okay, okay, i wrote the poem about the breasts. as for playforth being a good celebrity name, youn, i used to think so too, until my nickname at school became 'foreplay'. such things are almost enough to make a girl get married... speaking of poetry, i knew it was only a matter of time before someone posted the WHOLE of 'the raven'. nowhere else but sinister could it happen. it may be better than oral sex when you say it aloud, robert, but scrolling down doesn't have quite the same effect. still quite a fine experience though. i have been sleeping very badly lately, as usual the fault of a man (not in a totally bad way this time though), and so always wake up in the early hours remembering my dreams. another b&s one last night - now this is making me think that maybe i dream about b&s *every* night, but usually don't remember. scary. anyway, in this dream someone told me that the band were playing in australia, and were being supported by the stone roses and several other unlikely people. i woke up laughing before much else happened, but i know that i was working on some kind of leather stall in a market, with a mad butch blonde girl (the one who told me about the gig and i think was going to fly to australia to see them.) maybe i'll invest in some sleeping pills... today was spent walking the streets from morning until night. no bloody star anywhere near my shoulder though, just a heavy and flourescent bag of safeway leaflets on it. safeway may be mentioned in a b&s song, but it's not quite so lyrical when you're actually working for the bastards and have to lug a giant waste of paper around housing estates just to earn a few pennies. will anyone pay me to write customised poems for them??? searching after love and relevance, archel xxx ********* Rachel Playforth archel(a)iname.com *** buzzwords: coming soon to a website near you *** +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". hiya folk. I haven't mailed for a few weeks because I've been soooooo busy it's almost untrue. 1) - yaay. It's my birthday today. yay. celebrations. joviality all round. yay. jelly and ice cream. yay. novelty birthday cake featuring either disney character, or homer simpson. so why does it feel like "it's just another day"? birthdays have really lost their attraction for me. I remember when I was younger (i.e. - when I was 16, last year ;) ) It would be exciting, but I'm just too tired and content in not really caring about much now that it doesn't matter. 2) - I'm absolutley shitting it big style. I found out on tuesday that I've got my medicine interview for glasgow uni next wednesday, and I'm pretty scared. I've been told that they might ask u about the music u like, and I don't know if they would be put off by my taste (they might think that I'm a corrupt vote rigger) any advice on interview 'technique' wouldn't go amiss. 3) did some more work experience in hospital. I got to hold someones large intestine, because it was lying in a bucket of formaldehyde. it was, erm, frightenigly fun. I might just go and work in a slaughterhouse instead. 4) I got another mail from mick cook the other day. He said that he has got 3 posters and 3 records signed by all the band to give me, because I asked him for something to raffle to help fund a project I'm doing to pay for an activity week for some mentally disabled kids. but he said that stuart david was ill right now, but he'd sign the stuff soon. I bet karn TOLD him to wrap up warm when going outside, but no, he thought he knew better....... 5) I got a job in next in argyl st. in glasgow on saturday mornings now. I'm in menswear. I am kind of horrified by this, but I need the money. I find that a lot of customers there are dicks, and so are some of the workers. £3.63 an hour - not too good, but it WILL go up. I almost asked the guy if I could get some more because I'm more intelligent than the average shop worker, but then I thought the better of it. 6) what are 'props', as in "props to mr. X, because.."? I seem to see it a lot. 7) I need good stage equiptment for the gigi I'm holding in january. I want big big big speakers and lights ect., and a big smoke machine would be really good too. can anyone help? Hi Fragrant Ones, Thanks to SteadyMike for an exemplary (he's read the listroolz) post. Props to Martin R for mentioning Papa (formerly Aerial) M recently. This cricket was getting pretty lonely. Props too to our Mater for making me sit up all night pressing piddling little buttons on my phone trying to figure out how to produce some vaguely familiar tune. Ooh Hon, you don't half make me come over all Oedipal. At a recent meeting luscious Indie Droolz Pam Berry confided in me that she would happily drink Stuart Murdoch's bath-water. (And they call us *freaky*?) I admitted that I would probably have to buy a record of him farting in his bath, but would have to think twice about matching HER level of commitment.
