Sinister: It's still not snowing in Paisley (but I did see a fox yesterday)

It's true! The rest of Scotland is white, but Paisley still seems immune to it all. But a fox ran down my street last night, so I saw a fox out of the snow. Does that count? Anyway, down to business.... Keen list-watchers may have noticed I had unsubbed for a while, but I was gently coaxed back by a couple of caring Sinisterettes, so I did. And what has just dropped through my mailbox but a rather odd mail from Megan. I find it utterly bizarre that after all the recent correspondence about Sensitive Stan type stereotypical fans that people can still be so precious about Belle and Sebastian. Quote " i mean, the magazien chose to quote this line, assuming college students would recognize b&s almost as easily as john wayne...." and continuing "...i loved having something beautiful for myself, something that i could share with a few people and wonder about. the band certainly haven't been corrupted or anything, but there's something wonderful about stuart murdoch coming to mailing list picnics, and having a group of people who know a band and can share it's name amongst themselves like a secret handshake. i don't mean to offend the new people, you all are probably quite easily as lovely as any other listees i've met" Words fail me. People DO know who Belle and Sebastian are, it's not a secret society, and I for one would love it if EVERYONE knew and loved them as I do. Anyway, there are what, 5 billion people in the world and 900 of them are on Sinister. I don't think we've reached stadium-rock status yet, you know. Out of interest, I looked back at the archives from the start of Sinister, and it wasn't very on-topic then either. But it was fun, and it sometimes still is. And had I only discovered Belle and Sebastian last week or last month, I would consider them to be every bit as wonderful as I do now, and it would make me no lovelier a listee than I consider myself to be now. Which is not very at the moment, as all I seem to do is moan. I am sorry, I really don't want to be all moany, and I could have done this privately, or run off crying to Honey, but I wondered what you all think, am I the only one who actually wants people to like Belle and Sebastian? Should I not have voted for them for the Brits in case they end up on "Brit Awards '99" compilations with Steps and Billie, and people start to like them and Stu M won't come out to play with us any more? I get so angry when I see people being precious about music because they liked it first and by their logic must like it more. It's not big and it's not clever and I thought we were better than that. I promise my next mail will be cheerful and witty and interesting to you all. Well, I can but try....... Ailsa xx PS Oops, forgot my semi-B&S content. Justification is needed. You used to be able to go on bus trips round Manchester to all the Smiths' places of interest which I guess was kind of similar. Don't know if they do that now but once a year you can go on a bus tour of places in Manchester that have been in films which is more or less the same thing. Then they show "A Taste Of Honey" at the Cornerhouse and some bloke pontificates about it and always makes a joke about how Rita Tushingham jumps on a bus, tells the driver to take her to Salford, then gets off about 100 meters up the road. It's a good way to spend a summer Saturday though and there's always loads of foreign birds at these things. And foreign birds are always taking their clothes off. Or so I've been told. Anyway, since I'm here, what about that Nick Drake bloke? Dullard or what? I thought that documentary was shite but I did quite like the bit where some bloke said his lyrics never got passed sixth form poetry. Never trust a songsmith whose words are described as poetry, that's what I say. And why do all these "poets" die young? Did Tim Hardin and Tim Rose die young? Are they both exactly the same as Tim Buckley? I like to think so. I'd also like to think that Nick Drake was the poshest man in pop. The Zombies were quite posh though. They had 50 O Levels. Did Nick Drake have 50 O levels? I doubt it. The Zombies recorded "I got my mojo working" though. That's not very posh I suppose. Posh people don't have "mojos". I like the way Continental Europeans wear their ruck sacks at the front. I'm going to Continental Europe to watch them do it. Other things. I saw Stuart Murdoch's todger on Friday night after I followed him into some toilets. That was good. I wasn't really prepared for him elbowing me in the ribs and commenting "better out than in, eh?" but never mind. It took me a while to figure out what he was going on about when he told me he was "just going into this cubicle" and he'd be "leaving it unlocked". There's so much people on this list these days there's bound to be someone stupid enough to believe this. Is Northy back? I'm glad Rod's back. Maybe he could give us his verdict on Gwyneth Paltrow's breasts? Better than Kate Winslett's? Rod knows about these things. He has friends he talks about it with. Some of them are female. I saw "Shakespeare In Love" and it was bloody marvellous. Up yours "Saving Private Ryan". So the lead singer piped up, "I wonder if there's anything barenaked in here?" Ewwwww. He also said he once over-charged Bryan Adams $10 on purpose, because he figured he could afford it. :) More recently, I wrote a journalism ethics paper on the state of music writing in Canada. From what my sources told me, you can write a scathing review of anyone--but if you say anything bad about Canadian artists, the companies freak out. You're not patriotic, you're not supporting Canadian culture. And as one article I quoted said, "we should be allowed to acknowledge the Barenaked Ladies' success in the US and still say their music is tripe." Someone took me on a little tour when I was in Glasgow in May. We went to the Art School to see where the "pastie de la bourgeoisie" was spray-painted, but it had been cleaned off. I saw Henry Rollin's tonight and he told a story about taking an Irish woman to a Dokken show who's regular cup of tea was "Belle and Sebastian and things like that." he didn't slag them when he had the opportunity to do so, so i think he may be a closet fan. Well, well... not exciting news to most of you, but maybe to a few: I got to meet Natalie Merchant backstage after her concert here in Santa Barbara... she was sweet and funny and not shy. I also have gotten into Mojave 3 and their album "Out Of Tune" and would like to take this moment to recommend it to you all. What else? Oh, I love Slow Grafitti and the organ line in it. And the Auteurs MUST be listened to. Shit, this is the kind of post I delete on a regular basis. Just wanted Honey to keep me out of the nursery's purgatory by posting every once in a while. Maybe we should call the law, or maybe we should call the child's parents. I love you until the end... Sinister: belle and sebastian in the laundry room

so on sunday i was doing my laundry, after a fairly prolonged absence due to business and a lack of desire to hang out in the laundry room. which i ended up doing. so while i was leaning against the washer, waiting another washer which i could pounce on, i looked around. the decaying condom machine (now honestly, who wants to get their birth control from a machine that looks like it was put up around the '50s and has survived numerous floods, but only just barely) to the bulletin board, sponsored by interview magazine. next to a sexy photo of an actor named paul rudd, who i don't think i know, but may as he was looking so sexy he managed to cover his face, there was a quote wherein he said something along the lines of, "you can be masculine if you watch john wayne movies or masculine if you listen to belle and sebastian. and i do both." aside from the lack of proper grammar or anything, i was surprised. i mean, the magazien chose to quote this line, assuming college students would recognize b&s almost as easily as john wayne. then i was in a bookstore today, looking at a copy of the acid house. as i was reading the back, where they had the credits and whatnot, some of the bands from the album were named. belle and sebastian were named fourth, before primal scream. at first i was glad, but is it wrong to feel a little sad? i loved having something beautiful for myself, something that i could share with a few people and wonder about. the band certainly haven't been corrupted or anything, but there's something wonderful about stuart murdoch coming to mailing list picnics, and having a group of people who know a band and can share it's name amongst themselves like a secret handshake. i don't mean to offend the new people, you all are probably quite easily as lovely as any other listees i've met. but something about the first few is the sort of thing that probably won't happen again. do i make sense? maybe it's all the work and the grey day, i don't know. time for bed. xoxo megan mkl206(a)is8.nyu.edu visit the NEWLY UPDATEDmagnetic fields web page at: http://www.dissemination.com/megan/magneticfields/ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: Sparklehorse

well, it only took 4 friggin years but i finally have a new sparklehorse album to listen to godamn this is one hell of a record and the videos on the enhanced cd are mighty spiffy one of the songs called "Sick of Goodbyes" is quite a bit like Wilco, Golden Smog, Jayhawks and all those nd popsters, and is a muy cool song i could see being played on 120 minutes about three years ago or whenever it was last halfway decent (perhaps itll get played once or twice in the second hour like the "Wicked" video but never any real plug the first song on the record could spend some time on mtv if it werent for all the naughty words oh i think i might know what Sparkle Markle's fav album might be: Velvet Undergound self titled (not nico), he quotes it again on this album last time he quoted loosely "Pale Blue Eyes", this time "Candy Says", and he always builds well off of the lines also there's a new web page at www.sparklehorse.com also i found the Bonnie Prince Billy cd with one with the birds which will work its way on my cd after i cant handle anymore sparklehorse (something about sparklehorse makes me feel all gooey and kinda sad but not really, just weird and i cant usualy handle listening to him for too long, same thing with tom waits, nick drake, vic chesnutt and many others) so thanks for the offer Joss but im all set (|=-) wunnerful music listening while i write papers tonight B&S content: ummm...nah forget it ------Ev np-Sparklehorse-Good Morning Spider -- ----------------------------------------------------- I would feel much better If I knew you got this letter 'Cause the road that lays between us Is one week long And I don't have the bread To come and see you now ---"Letter To Bread"-- Scud Mtn. Sinister: What B&S did next?

Before I get into the meat of this message - DavidJ2502, who seems to like random numbers said... ...and just because I don't identify with him as a public schoolboy (near) Oxbridge graduate doesn't mean there isn't beauty in the songs. So there. Which is true, although it doesn't necessarily mean that if you were a public schoolboy and near Oxford Graduate then you would find beauty in the songs. Aside from the beauty of the string arrangements, or the tunesmithness of songs like Hazey Jane II, and my privileged education, its the aching loneliness and the displacement signified in songs like Place to Be and Time of No Reply that get my likkle heart strings a-tugging. And after that pretension, some B&S content. I was wondering to myself what sort of musical direction the third album could take (knowing that my wish is Stuart's command), and I have decided that a couple of completely acoustic songs would be ideal, perhaps with multi-layered guitars and delicious backing vocals - perhaps by bringing Robyn Hitchcock along to a few recording sessions. Failing that, a huge blow-out number like Lazy Line... but with the length of two TIJAMRS's with quiet bits, loud bits, and a randomly placed F#m 7th suspended 9th followed by, I don't know, any chord I suppose. Nick Drake folk-guitar tunings should be used at all times, as should Ladysmith Black Mbazo or whatever those baked bean advertising musicians are called. To my knowledge Phil Collins has not been sampled on any B&S track, so it's about time a bit of the baldy drummer cum actor's talents were employed. "Another day in paradise" would be ideal, as would the song which for some reason seems destined to be lodged in my head for ever, giving me a hard eternity of an afterlife when I leave this fine world - namely "Against all odds". Perhaps Stuart Staples and Isobel should sing a number together. Perhaps I should shut up. OK.
