Erm, just a quick note to say that we've done a bit of an overhaul of our Marine Research website. You can find it at http://members.xoom.com/MR_98 and it's best viewed with Netscape. On a related note, I thought some people might like to know that tomorrow's Peel show will include Marine Research's first session feat. four songs that won't be on the album, incl. a duet with David Gedge (Weddoes, Cinerama) and their new single (i.e. the one that will be released after the debut album). Hello tigers, By the time I've read my weekend digests I forget all the things I wanted to say about them... Oh yes...the *thing* that spurred on all the letters about merchandising was a rumour that Jeepster would STOP doing the merchandise. It seems that this is a true rumour, but, I am guessing, all it means is that someone else who can devote themselves full-time to t-shirts and embossed nail-clippings will handle it all, leaving Jeepster more time to get sweaty about Snow Patrol. Um. Does anyone else find themselves imagining that at some time at least one of B&S may feel like setting up their own record label? Or perhaps it's already happened and I'm being slow. Watch this space regardless... The porno parrot sounds like a spanking good idea. I for one took "Delta of Venus" to Bowlie at the *specific* orders of Madam Isobel, and even displayed it in our chalet window, but no-one knocked on the door and asked if they could take it for a "read". I also once had the ignominy, when I was working for my mum, to be sent to a bookshop to pick up a sample of A.N. Roquelaure's oeuvre. Happily bouncing up to the assistant, I asked for some samples of this mysterious scribe, only to be led by the blushing girl to the "filth" section, whereby I purchased a book called "The Taming of Sleeping Beauty", in which a rather wimpish young lady gets repeatedly tied up and spanked and just occasionally penetrated, although her male chum gets a statue's phallus in his bottom (cf. Nick Dastoor) and all kinds of dodgy oral shenanigans. Ta Mum. I also think that a B&S computer game sounds like an even better idea. I'm too dull and unimaginative to think of how it could all pan out - perhaps The Wonderful Mind of PJMiller could help us out here - but the option of controlling Stuart (guitar-wielding warrior elf) or Richard (master of invisibility) is too appealing an opportunity to miss... And finally - nice to see a music journalist or two in the nursery - business or pleasure, gentlemen? If it's gossip you're after, why, I hope you don't think we talk about that kind of thing here! Tssk. hello people thought I'd tell you a story about what happened to me last night I was in the student union (stirling uni) at a so called indie night and was dancin away to early Charlatans and stuff which was good but then I got a bit bored so I went to the DJ and said to him "dont take this the wrong way but have you got any indie stuff recorded after 92?" He laughed and then said "No....actually I do have belle and sebastian but nobody ever dances to it" Well I showed him the TBWTAS that I was wearing under my hooded top and I begged and I pleaded but he wouldn't play it for me. So what I did was I got him to play Bang from the Blur album leisure and then I wandered off. About 10 minutes later I had a great idea...I went back to the DJ and asked him if he wanted a copy of Tigermilk. When he said yes I demanded that he play Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying for me in order to get a copy. He did this and when he played it lots of people screamed and ran on to the dance floor and started jumping about with me and smiling a lot and one girl hugged me and another started rubbing my T-shirt and I was very happy. I would have posted yesterday, however, my eyes were a little weary and my mind a little stale. I did get up at 8.30am on Sunday morning but rectified the situation by going to bed at 8.00pm Sunday night. For what? Well a good cause I think. Thank you to all those B&S fans who turned up at the Nightcat (of which few wore their dancing shoes, shy or not moved by the rhythm??), or later at Supermarket (where all danced to familiar aural experiences)and especially those who completed the double. I hope you found the night as entertaining as did I. Guess I will bump into all at gigs in the near future (such as Underground Lovers at P.O.W, can't wait for that one, 4th June)so until then, audios... Sinister: When I get no mail...

I try to be on good terms with my inbox. It sends me nice things, I read them to myself, pat my monitor on its head, and wait for it to give me more. But the weekend! Oh dear, when I find myself checking my mail the most, there is the least. My dear Eudora has a cough now from searching searching searching for new mail... and there is none. None but a few spams telling me how to make a cable descrambler box. I do have a few things to say though (which I will conveniently number so I don't lose track) 1. Reading my mail... reading my mail... Stina Nordenstam, blah blah blah Stina nordenstam bloo bloo bloo... Stina.. OH! LITTLE STAR!! Stina NORDenstam! Somehow I heard Little Star on the (deep breath) Romeo and Juliet soundtrack (exhale) and ooooohh, I thought it was so nice. But i didn't look to see who it was by. I searched for "Little Star" on the UBL and it gave me crazy things by the Supremes and the Temptations. I knew that wasn't right. Now I know now I know! 2. Is it wicked not to care (that someone is turnin' a profit)? Absolutely not! But of course the other side must be allowed to speak too. Opinions are opinions are opinions, and if saying them out loud makes you selfish, well then... My take on the looming bigness of Belle and Sebastian is this: I think that it isn't snobbery and selfishness. It isn't that we (and i am using "we" to mean "me") want them to stay small because we are selfish. If everyone in the world could love it that would be fabulous! Imagine the picnics! But if B&S were all over the place then people would be listening to them because of a good review or they like stu's arms of sex or whatever, and if they rushed out and bought an album for aesthetic reasons they might not like it at all. And then they might say mean things about them. I see it as a seventh grade math problem. If 100% of the listeners like them right now and we add a solution with 35% happy listeners, 38% lukewarm listeners, and 27% unhappy listeners... Some are complaining, some only like one or two songs, some are still swooning. What if the band was to get discouraged and not play for us anymore? Last week everyone was talking about how they found the lyrics + music to be emotional and whatnot. And listening to it is somewhat of a religious experience for lots of folks. I don't quite know what I want to say, because I want to say it without sounding the way I fear it will sound. When someone who only moderately likes Belle and Sebastian wears a Study at Stow shirt, do you not think that it has been sullied by his/her tepidness? I do. It probably isn't the *correct* way to think and may sound mean and unwelcoming. I protest! I only want unreceptive people to stay away. I don't begrudge anyone the opportunity to make money or listen to beautiful music. And its only my opinion. I do not think that by expressing it I am being selfish, nor were the people who started the thread. 3. Where did the rest of the footer go? 4. Jeepster website: what on earth is that font? I see nothing but the greek alphabet and must copy and paste to elsewhere to read it. Oh, why does amazon.com say that Tigermilk can be bought as an import, as it has been released May 4th? Silly. looking at the reviews someone said this about Belle and Sebastian (which quite made me laugh): Brad W. (bradleyw(a)usa.net) from Chicago IL USA , December 28, 1998 This Is One Star Too Many ...People, people -- Belle & Sebastian is flat out boring, and they are musical thieves to boot (unless Lou Reed is collecting royalties...) And perhaps most offensively, Belle & Sebastian's fan club members gather for picnics before their shows. Picnics! If that doesn't tell you what kind of jelly-filled danishes gravitate towards Belle & Sebastian's music, nothing will... (the end) I don't think that jelly-filled danishes is the worst thing to be called. so nyaaaa Brad W. 5. Sinister: Rant

Stuart's Staying in and he thinks its a sin that he has to leave the house at all. Why the big hoo-haa about Jeepster selling stuff. Do you buy Spice Girls merchandise from Virgin? Or Bluetones stuff from their record company? A record company should be there to make records and their reason for stopping selling crappy indie badges (ok, and some useful stuff too) is perfectly legitimate. It's like berating McDonalds for not making the whole of their business selling ice cream. Jeepster is a record label and to get anywhere it needs bands. Now maybe some companies can survive on 2 or 3 lines of products, some even survive on only one but a record label in this day and age has to have more than 3 different bands (I'm not counting B&S spinoffs). It's not as if they'll never sell records ever again. Anyway, enough of a ran. I went to Our Price a few weeks ago to ask about Tigermilk, so the bird at the counter looked up on the computer thing about it. It said it was released for a week at the end of February then deleted on something like march 4th. So what's going on? Why has it taken this long?
