I have an essay to write and have been up all night trying to finish it, and when taking a wee break, I decided to stick the words "belle and sebastian" into Altavista, then tried again with "stuart murdoch". I was also intrigued to find out that Mick Cooke is the manager of the Eire Ladies under-16 football team, whilst also forming the Hastings sub-aqua club (was that the reason for the location of Bowlie? So he could go and check up on his proteges just down the road?). Richard Colburn is a state senator in Maryland, Chris Geddes is a big cheese in Canadian volleyball circles, Sarah Martin runs a stud farm in Co Meath, Stuart David has written a book called "How to become a professional calligrapher (a pentalic book)" and Isobel Campbell is the chairperson of the South Harris agricultural association, organising fine sheep-shearing competitions by all accounts (well according to the Stornoway Gazette) But most revealing is the admission by one Geraldine Halliwell that the things she likes most in the world are Abba, Elvis and Stevie Jackson... http://degrees.simplenet.com/spice100/geri.html if you don't believe me. Warning! There's no direct B&S content here... Just another call for anybody in Holland to get in touch with me for our own little picnic or gathering. Summer's around the corner (we hope!), and it would be nice if we could plan something in the future. 'Hi' to anyone that still knows who I am. I've been gone from the list for yonks, but I'm still around, so feel free to drop me a line. Sinister: Long time no see!

Alright you lot, haven't seen you for ages. People have been asking about the bowlie thing, and it really depends on one fact : Were you there? If you were then read answer (b), if not read answer (a). (a) It was pretty dull really, weather was overcast, people boring, bands OK you know, probably not worth the 85 quid or so. (b) Yes it was bloody great, couldn't have believed that the whole thing turned out so well, fantastic stuff. It just shows you what can be done. I can't say I agree with people who are quoted with the liked of "this is just utter tweeness" or whatever, whatever that actually means really, I didn't see a load of people around pretending to be cutesy. Isaac Hayes didn't turn up and neither did the WHO. More's the pity. I was hoping it was going to be one of them that was the secret act. Never mind, it was Mogwai, who I'm sure were great. Chris Leonard and I didn't actually go and see any bands on the Saturday. Saw almost everyone who's been involved in clubs and stuff over the years from Edinburgh there, we'd been surmising the week previous about how it'd just be like the whole of central scotland moved down south for the weekend, and in some ways it was. Great to meet all the people that I did, brilliant to see Tim, Andy, Mike, Pam, Trous, oh dear, I'd better stop really, this is going to be a great big long list otherwise. We were in SURF CITY - which RULED. Although naturally HERO ZONE did seem like the best place to be. Where were you at bowlie? Was it (a) Hero Zone (b) Surf City (c) TreeTops (d) Savannah Land (e) Pirouhette Park They're in order of coolness starting from the top and getting less cool as you head towards (e). Oh bloody hell, it's raining and I'm supposed to be off to the pub quiz in a few minutes. Never mind. I apologise if any of you have done this already, but I've just had an interesting thought. Get your copies of '...Sinister', '...Arab Strap' and '...Modern Rock Song', shuffle them about (optional, but still ... erm ...fun) and then arrange them all on the floor face up, next to each other. Play about with the order and soon you too could laugh as much as I did. Traffic lights! This was all planned, you know. I think there's a covert road safety theme in B&S lyrics, but I'm not sure. I have also noticed that the particular shades used on B&S records are i-chuffin'-dentical to those used by several British bus companies before Stagecoach came and robbed us of the classic orange Manchester bus (better than those offensive red London monstrosities if you ask me). I think there's a book in here. You may be reading the witterings of the next Johnny Rogan here. Either that or I've taken things TOO far now. If there's anyone else out there who took the time to do something as sad as I described above, please let me know. I really want to feel justified. Sinister:Starved of mirth? Aren't we all ...

Ah, finally I can emerge from the nursery and actually feel like a part of this list, almost like I'm <sniff> being accepted into the <sob> family. How beautiful. If I'd actually made it to Bowlie, thought of something really interesting to say or peppered this message with witticisms then maybe tomorrow I'd be some kind of universally-adored folk hero as opposed to a seedy ne'er-do-well. Anyway, I just read something relating to bad university experiences, and as the rain falls hard on humdrum Bangor I can say I truly empathise. I came here from Manchester in September only to find that every boozer shuts at 12a.m. and that the place is full of rugby player types keen on dishing out abuse. Still, imagine my surprise when I attended our weekly 'indie' night (Beastie Boys and FLC anyone? Me neither) and saw a lad in a 'Study at Stow' T-shirt! YES! I wasn't wearing a B&S shirt that night, so I think I scared him a little when my friend David and I approached to congratulate him. However, it's lovely to know that there are folk that appreciate similar delights, even in a far-flung corner of Gogledd Cymru. So, even at the dullest university I found people with something in common. Sunday. 2.35 pm. A little advice for all of you who are thinking of going to a shitty uni quite far from home: Don't bother. At the weekends everyone else gets the train or bus back to their houses, 10 miles away, leaving you alone in the empty halls of residence. Probably. Yeah, I don't suppose I have that much to moan about either come to think of it, but then... sorry, there is no then, I'm just a useless waster who can't get himself together. Curse you god for making me quote daytime comedy. Re. the Dublin practical woodwork demonstration, Finn's comment gets it about right I think: <I think people are just a little worried about why he did it in the first place. someone mentioned an argument between him and isobel. ....all that side it was a nice gig, if a little short. >>. And the sound was absolutely marvellous. Sorry now that I didn't make a video of it. We weren't searched going into the circle, there was an uninterrupted view and there were no drug crazed kids taunting Struan anywhere near me :). If the SM/IC rows look likely to continue, wouldn't it be good if SM set up his own version of Gentle Waves,substituting Sarah Martin and the Paper Boat version of Stuart D for Isobel. And maybe even guest appearances by Mrs Murdoch (or did she sign to Sleeka Sounds?), who would ensure he was on best behaviour. The performance of "Stuart Murdoch - the Beast Within" might also require a re-examination of of the lyrics. For example, "There was blood on the sheets again" might refer to yet another major belt up with the band and hotel staff. And what about kicking the crutches from a crippled friend. Definitely not a man to be messed with. Hello, I Just had to drop a line about Oliver (hello Oliver) and his dilemma about whether the Godspeed You Black Emperor! album is putting £15 to good use. In a vastly inadequate word: yes. I bought F#A#(no infinity sign on my keyboard- help) about a month ago and it hasn't been out of my Walkman since; the previous champion B&S compilation is now de-throned. I hate to do one of those lazy pop journalism imagine-the-Cramps-in-a-room-with-the-Stooges-playing-the-Pastels-on-acid similies but I just can't help thinking of The Tindersticks as well as the more obvious Post-Rock connections, but that's probably just the strings innit? Mind you, paying ten quid for the new ep is a bit much. Sad muso fact: My local Our Price files Godspeed You Black Emperor! under K for Kranky (their record lable) 'because it says that on the side of the CD case {grins with smug self satisfaction endearing himself to no-one} Going off at a tangent a bit, you can call me paranoid if you like but I stood next to a bloke who looked just like Mick Derrick from Prolapse at the Fall's gig in Birmingham last week. He lives in Leicester doesn't he? Just a hop, skip and two jumps from England's most drab town. My brother said it was someone else, but I think he saw my brother's Prolapse T-shirt and decided to get some much deserved adulation. Alternative theory- Stars in their Eyes contestant (doing Pull Thru' Barker next week) tries to take credit for other people's work. Just a thought. Before I go, does anyone know where exactly in Birmingham Lawrence from Felt is from? I was thinking, if I could get an open-top bus I'd do guided tours like they did with Manchester and The Smiths. But seriously, it would be cool to see where he was brought up... in a non-stalker kind of a way.
