hi all, so its saturday night, baby, SATURDAY NIGHT! ..And im almost in tears!...oh my god, panic panic PANIC at my econometrics and statistical economics assignment, lying in front of me, oozing pure evil like a wreathing seething snake, venom dripping oh so slowly from its jaws of death, just hanging there in a final statement of intent, that you, yes YOU, shall PAY dearly for your weeks of sloth and idleness. pants. ..sorry for that, im just rather tense at the mo', i hate stress of all kinds. i hate that throbbing feeling in your head you get when you finally realise just exactly how deep you are in the quagmire of hell.... B&S content: OOooh, can we order Tigermilk quite cheaply then? i could look in jeepster shop but cant be bothered. and i wanna get une waves gentile t-shirt too if and when they go on-line, cos i only bought one at the gig and i cant wear it as isobel scribbled on it...oh, and on the NME site theres a piccie of Stuart looking rather mad with excitement,from bowlie i think. did anyone read that article in the Times on Bowlie a while back? the author liked the festival and most of the bands, but at the end said B&S werent much cop and if another bowlie is arranged they should stick to organising it! Cheek!!! silly man. how anyone can not see the beauty of their music is beyond me. oh that reminds me, does anyone know how far down the old pipeline the idea of Bowlie MKII is? Cos i soooo wanna go and make up for missing the last one...David and Katrina should go bully stu about it or something, though B&S are all taking a (well earned) break right now, arent they? its certainly been an eventful past few months. what'll they do in this little break i wonder? stu scrubbing the floors of the church hall, complete with soapy suds and marigold gloves? aw, i bet he'd look really sweet. and what about sarah? she must feel a bit left out cos shes not in the gentle waves or looper. i dont know. maybe she can start her own fiddle band or something, call it the gloopy waves or something... i was listening to the Black session earlier (thank you, lovely nick), the Wrong Girl ('la femme faux') has belatedly grown on me, stevie singin in that croonsome way of his has finally won me round,wasnt it that or Paper Boat on the next EP? cos i still dont like paper boat... oh well, ive long since given up work for the day, wish me good luck with it, im off to enjoy the gentle rhythms of....DANCE NATION SIX!!!!!!!!!! So I'm just taking a break from the fascinating revision that takes me across the plushly vegetated landscapes of orgainc chemistry to self inductance. Only physics can make up a unit called Henrys. Anyway, I am writing for a reason. You see, God Speed You etc has caught my eye recently and I'm looking for someone to compare it to something so I will rush out to my local record store and buy it. I've got too many CD's so I've decided to cut down (it was not being able to buy Britney Spears' single that hurt the most, such a haunting lyricist ;-) ). In other words is it worth spending £15 on it if I've already got Mogwai. Belle and Sebastian are being classed with the Smiths aain are they? Sorry, but I must totally disagree with that, every time I here Morrissey Iget depresses but every time i hear Lazy Line Painter Jane I get dancing. The band aren't classifiable, they're just brilliant And The Doors aren't depressing - look at Who Do You Love, Break On Through,Light My Fire, Touch Me,.... Nice to see an abundance of Trash Can Sinatras lyrics in people's subject boxes these last few days. I would just like to warn everyone of a nervous disposition to think carefully before looking at Sarah's photo entitled "vickybeer" as it shows alarming amounts of my torso due to an ill-fitting dress and may cause the retraction of my list crush votes (kind of like jessica in reverse - show flesh first, get no votes). Incidentally, big Stu, if all voting is done anonymously and you don't know who is voting for who, how did you know that Warrender John had voted ten times for himself? Does that mean you can blackmail people as you *do* actually know who votes for who? I'm not ashamed of who I voted for, but the person who voted for me that I don't know who you were (but thank you anyway! Presumably NOT someone who met me at Bowlie where I was putting the Hopkins-a-like to shame with my drunken mumblings and quite possibly contributing to the Beamish Black running out early on Sunday), you may be worried to know that big Stu will take one look at Sarah's photo of me and laugh at you behind your back for the rest of your days :) I had a nice long spiel composed in my head about lyrics v music that I was going to insert here, but I can't really be bothered. It involved the Cocteau Twins, pre-"everything must go" Manics and how they affect me in different ways, and Belle and Sebastian are the best of both worlds, grabbing you both musically AND lyrically. And I think that about the lyrics I *don't* identify with as well, to be that accurately observational about so many things is the talent of a true poet/songwriter, as opposed to the actions of a talentless fool like me that thinks I can ramble on about things and convey even half of what I feel. I can't do it, and am not foolish enough to think that because I have suffered a bit I could write a song/book about it and make people see what it is I am trying to say. I don't know, or particularly care, if Stuart went through any or all of the experiences he writes of, all I know is he can express the shit I went through much better than I ever could. And it's nice to know that people understand it. Nick mentioned something about angst-ridden teenager stereotyping and I feel I may be drifting into that here by harping on about my rather unfortunate youth. I would like to mention at this point that I do NOT listen to mournful doom and gloom music, being a huge fan of C86/Postcard/Teenage Fanclub and other such jangly stuff. My record collection is not full of other people's angst, I merely find that certain B&S lyrics strike a familiar chord, but it is uplifting rather than painful to hear. I can't quite fathom out why, perhaps it's the detachment, and the realisation that people do get it. I can't really ever say "look at me, I'm miserable" and hope people understand or care, it's just not in my nature to seek comfort. It took a hell of a lot for me to admit this stuff here and I just did it because I thought that if people understood the feelings in the lyrics, they would understand that there are people out here who see themselves in that. I never did it for sympathy (but thanks to the people who mailed me privately, it meant a lot), I just meant it to be a throwaway thread about meaning in songs and how Struan's quite good at it. Arantxa and Robin both touched on the fact that feeling it doesn't mean you can, or indeed should, talk/write about it. So I shall close my own public correspondence on this matter there, though any of you who wrote to me privately about this should feel free to continue :) God, where did that come from? I notice I started that paragraph with the notion that I couldn't be bothered writing a lot. Sorry :) Oh, and by the way, Nick Dastoor is a fine upstanding human being and not sluttish in any way. Cute, too. Photographic evidence of cuteness will be forthcoming as soon as my mate's scanner gets fixed. Long time no hear I've been hiding through all the bowlie business, jealous of missing out on the bands and wanking machines but mostly missing the seaside. It is supposed to be very theraputic, especially for city boys like me. I'm in total agreement with whoever it was who said the bonus Go-Betweens CD is better than Bellavista terrace. I was persuaded to get into the band by a friend who thinks they're the best things ever, only to be a bit disappointed on first listen to the first cd. The sessions have a bit more 'energy' to them. The verdict on the rest of my shopping basket is - new Add (n) to x album = very good - new Suede album = mediocre at best. Chances of Suede ever recording another Pantomime Horse = nil Winding the clock back to Monday and the picnic, Sky news did their evening weather forecast live from Primrose Hill about 5 or 6 o'clock. I had a look out for any giveaway Stow T shirts to highlight your presence but alas my search proved fruitless. Nationwide fame must settle for the bowlie photos for now. Bloody Mogwai have got themselves into a computer game now. They're in Actua Ice Hockey, after the Super Furry Animals blagged their way into Actua Soccer 2. Are B+S missing out here. After Stuart's guitar rage maybe he could be the central character in Quake 3. Picture the blurb on the back of the box "An isolated man, stranded on an alien planet. Survival is his only thought. Become 'Mad, Bad' Stuart as he struggles to prevail over his alien adversaries, armed only with a ukulele. Pity the poor girl who chose to be confirmed as Monica during Ms Lewinsky's book tour. She must have wondered why poorly stifled giggles reverberated around the church during her holy moment. The bishop wasn't pleased either. One more thing, the Verve obituary in this weeks NME is the funniest thing you'll read this year.
