Hello everybody, I've been on the list for a few weeks now, and today I finally bit the bullet, and decided to write in with a question about B+S and introduce myself at the same time (after all, I reasoned, if you can't do something new and special on your 17th birthday, when can you do it? :) <<deep breath>> So, here goes. Who, pray tell, is "Dylan in the movies"? Did Bob Dylan make movies? If he did, what were they? And is this Bob at all or some other Dylan who was in movies? What other stars are named Dylan? Is it Matt Dillon, just spelled wrong? So, about me. I just turned 17 today, I'm finally done with high school, and I'm going to university in the fall, and am sort of scared for that. And I'm in love with my best guy friend, only I can't tell him because he would get weird on me. Here's another question: can friendship easily and un-messily turn into a romantic relationship or does it screw everything up? If anyone can give me advice, anecdotes, etc. on this subject I would appreciate it. Oh, and one more thing before I stop wasting valuabe B+S space: I feel so dumb and American asking this, but what is "twee"? I'd feel a lot better if I knew this. I blurred my vision to hide the lip asynchronies and imagined that they were Belle & Sebastian. It worked quite well because there were lots of people in the band, and the camera even moved onto the brass section during the trumpet solo of 'Paper Boat'. I did not like the monster I had created. Sorry to ask this, but I have a plea that involves personal gain. If I can get 25 people to register online (this involves giving a valid credit or debit card number but it's all encrypted, reputable company, don't believe the media hype blah blah) with QXL ('Europe's Largest Online Auction House!') then I get a free video recorder, which I need. It only takes about five minutes, as far as I remember, and they don't spam you. Sly and the Family Stone are ace, even though I only have 'There's a Riot Goin' On' I can still say that because the gods are smiling on me today. To start with, I actually managed to get out of bed in the morning to go into school to find out the horrors A levels have to offer me next year. They're going to let me do history even though I havent done it for Gcse, and I found a Pulp Video (sorted for Films and Vids) for £3 alongside countless crappy eighties film hits (not pretty in pink, sadly). and I'm going to watch it now. Yet another utterly irrelevent, non-b&s post. Go on, admit you love them. Sinister: BERLIN - I met Stuart D., and still I have things to dream of...

Bless you, bless you all of you pretty girls (and boys, let's not be sexist)! I feel more than a bit ashamed that my first mail to The List is not a heartwarming story about lost loves and new dreams, nor is it a somewhat belated thought on whether briefs are better than boxers or whatever that whole underwear discussion was about. I have a story though on Stuart D. and the rest of Looper, but I am keeping it for my last paragraph, so I hope you all wille read the boring part in between as well. Having reread it, I feel not that secure about the length as well. I will try not to worry as much as I do. Promise. A friend of mine invited me to visit him in Berlin thursday, which is the-day-after-tomorrow. Unfortunately, four of the nights I will be in this immense construction site that the Big B. seems to be turning into, he will have his family over as well. Great for him because now they can celebrate his sisters birthday all together in a most cheerfull manner, but poor me... Now I * sob sob * will have to sleep under the Dammbrücke or under the trees of the Friedrichshain Park. The Youth Hostel is full and I am even planning to stay home in Amsterdam, unless I find a place to stay in Beautiful Berlin. Is there any sinisterine from Berlin who can accommodate me for <bold>sunday, monday, tuesday and wednesday night</bold>? I will only need a place to put my little matress and I will be fine. Of course The Good Angel that will help (Berlin? Angels? I think there's a Wim Wenders flashback coming up from somewhere) shall always be welcome in my humble residence in Amsterdam, which is according to some English pothead friends I once met the ideal city to listen to B&S in. Euh... actually only one of them knew the band. Come to think of it, they were Irish. But hey, it was six o' clock in the morning and the awaking birds were making a hell of a noise. I anybody has some great suggestions on what places I should definitely visit in Berlin, please mail them as well. I may have a Rough Guide of the city, but the good stuff is never in those publications. It's like Alex Garland wrote in his miraculously exciting novel The Beach (go read it before the Leonardo di Caprio-movie is making it impossible to enjoy the story because his pouting face will stare at you continuously while reading the book). Visiting places recommended by word of mouth is okay, when sites are in Lonely Planets etc. you can bet they are filled with monstrous souvenir stalls, American college students with to much money and too little imagination and the prices are doubled... each month. What club is most likely to play B&S for instance - or is the whole of clubland Berlin one big Love Parade House Thump all year? Are there any really nice places to see? If there's a meet-up planned before the second of July, let me know as well. But now the Stuart D.-story you have all been waiting for (?). There are actually two stories. I interviewed Stuart two months ago im Amsterdam for my new popculture internet magazine that will go online at the end of July. If any of you would like to be foreign correspondent, you are by the way all very welcome to apply! Let's make it a worldwide media conglomerate run by sinisterines! But back to the stories... He told me two very strange tales. One was about the albums they have released. Stuart said all the members of the band really despised (he used that word) IYFS! It had nothing to do with the sound they tried to create and Stuart M's twisting the knobs of the mixing decks for weeks and weeks at an end didn't improve the end result a bit. They weren't very comfotable with TBWTAS as well, but now Tigermilk is going to be released on cd, finally the poor people-that-are-not-priviliged-by-ever-having-heard-a-vinly-copy-or-a-tape-of-Tigermilk will finally know what B&S is really about. Another story he told me was hat just before there show in Amsterdam this year (or was it just in 1998, whatever...) one of the band members was victim of a collision with a passing motor cyclist. I have forgotten who it was (I sort of recall it being Isobel!) but he or she was not actually run over, but stil went down with a bang and the motor guy didn't even stop! The show went ahead because it wasn't such a big deal after all (only some scratches I recall but nonetheless...) and it was a great show - as someone told me afterwards, when I had succeeded to survive some stupid deadline. Grrr. Thursday in the train to Berlin I will write the whole interview out and maybe I will find some more strange things (like the fact that Stuart D., the friendly bearded bassplayer who all know, once wore his hair like David Silvian - and there are photographs to support that accusation, Karn told me). I will let you know in a couple of weeks. Hope I haven't bored you with my rambling. Let me tell you a little update story. Enter a certain Art girl. enter me hanging out periodically with art girl, once getting pissed at art girl, then realizing there was no reason to be pissed and regaining my bearings, thanks in part to the understanding wisdom of CHRISTA my homie. Enter my dyke friend Sam telling art girl i have a crush on her, and art girl saying she knew all a long and she didn't want a 'relationship' rt now but she still thinks i'm really cool and wants to hang out with me. Enter me meeting up with art girl and sam on friday afternoon, being embarrassed, playing "she's losing it' on sam's guitar, then taking the evening to art girls pizza place where some slacker guys promise to give us free pitchers of beer. we chat it up all over the place and get all friendly like, and i drink 2 glasses of beer before i'm like going partially out of my head. fuck. i c an drink a whole bottle of champagne and not get THAT dizzy. i vowed to drink no more that night and i did not. me and art girl start talking about art (what else?) and i think i spilled guts to her about something dumb like how insecure i am, and what a huge romantic clingy person i am. she seems to say that she feels the same way, or some such rubbish. after a while we stumble to the bar down the street. by this time i'm just wanting to fall asleep, or cry, or something. i kept looking over at artgirl and having to look away cos i couldn't stare into her eyes and she kept asking if i was okay. i was slumped over on the table drinking water as fast as i could though a tiny little straw, hopeing it would get rid of the feeling i was feeling, which was abject embarrassment and emotional train-wreck. she was dancing for a couple minutes and looked so fine. we 3 started discussing dancing. sam and i can't dance. someone mentioned slow dancing. in a flash of brilliance, or stupidity, i blurted out that in my present state of mind, i wouldn't be loath to slow dance with someone, which was the truth. i felt like a total moron. Art girl says " i would totally slow dance with you" and then the chick playing guitar started playing a slow song, and sam shoved me off the chair and i followed artgirl to the dance floor where 2 other girls were dancing, they looked awfully straight though, i'm not sure what their deal was, but who cares. art girl took me by the hand and she put her arm around my waist and one on my shoulder and i did the same. she held my hands and danced against me and twirled me and she put her cheek next to mine and she stared me in the eye closer and closer, and i had to keep looking away, because i was so embarrassed i wanted to kiss her so badly and she acted like she wanted to, but i'm not the smartest person about those things, and i had never danced wiht ANYONE in my life. i was scared stiff and could see sam over hte way, rudely watching us and it made me more embarrassed, but she was such a good dancer she made it easy for me, and i held her tighter and grasped her shoulder and she said "you're so cool" and she looked at me like "if we weren't in public i would throw you down and ravage you like a wild tiger". i could have stayed that way forever. at the end of the song she kissed me on the cheek. so softly, and took my hand and we left the dance floor, and i promptly started trembling and i collapsed onto the table and for the rest of the time i just gazed into space like a drugged deer that just got tagged on the ear...except when we went to play the jukebox and i played Abba "waterlloo" but we had to leave before it played and i was bitter about that. i stayed up at sam's whiniing and talking and waiting to get sober, and at about 4 am i drove home listening to Nick Drake (thanks james) and i thought of how gently she kissed me on the cheek, and cried just a little, and spent most of the weekend in a dream state worrying and fretting and wondering what the hell i am going to do, and making her another tape. i'm fucking serious. no one has ever kissed me before in my life, or held my hand even jsut a little tiny bit. i'm going totally insane. it's belle and sebastian all over again. and again. what the hell.......my gramma is banging aroudn downstairs, it's friggin 4-30 in the morning. anyway. i know that was a big lot of nothing and someone will probalby be pissed at me for posting such non-topical garbage, but i guessed i could slip by since i havne't posted anything for like over a week. and i wanted to tell someone(s) about what happened and that i've never wanted so badly in my life for someone to sweep me off my feet.................. i need to listen to francoise hardy, but instead i've been listening to Lida Husik and Gusgus and dead can dance all weekend, except when i made her the tape, i put "Like Dylan in the MOvies" on it because she is real big into bob dylan. i know how ridiculous it is, but i just dont' care. i want something that i shouldn't even bother with, and i want it BAD. it's like potato chips, you can't have just one. it's scary as all hell to have a real life that seems more like a dream. the only time any one ever has held me was in dreams. and i'm OLD. OLD OLD OLD> she's younger than me and been around a million more times. i'll probaby get my heart trashed. i had a dream last night something about B/S acutally, the band was there, it was like a concert. christa was there. stuart M looked way bigger than in real life, he was very tall and had huge muscles and looked like a big oaf. but isobel was cute. i dreamed about restaurants and canaries and fish aquariums and Hello JESSSSSSSSSS are you there, girlfriend HUGS to alyssa marie the sweetie write me ! Sinister: dig them potatos if you never dug your girl before

Hi there, This list reminds me of a Clint Eastwood movie. Well, not really. But there is a movie called Heartbreak Ridge and it's about a bad-ass sergeant who's known to everyone as Gunny. This character is of course played by Mr. Eastwood. Gunny gets a transfer to a new "boot camp" (I believe that's what they're called, but I wouldn't actually know as I managed to cheat my way out of military service) and here he's assigned to train a bunch of lazy-ass men who's used to never doing anything at all. But Gunny of course isn't going to let them fail to become hard-ass army chaps (tm. Damien Hirst/ Keith Allen) so he bad-asses them around for a bit. BUT the lazy-asses have a secret weapon, THE SWEDE. The Swede is apparently the mutha of all bad-asses and as soon as he get's out of the "army jail" (I'm sure there's a proper word for that) he's going to kick Gunny's arse BIG time. So much of the first part of the movie is spent hyping the Swede (much in the same way they did with Godzilla in that movie, or so I heard, I haven't seen it myself, being the intellectually elitist snob I am). There's so much talk of the Swede that you think you're going to have to be let down when you finally see him. I've seen the film a few times, god knows why, and every time I think "the Swede can't possible be that tough...." and every time I end up pleasantly surprised that he is rather mean. But then of course Gunny beats him up with no problems whatsoever. Umm, the point of this story was that it reminded me of the current Hopkins Hype (tm old listees). A friend of mine ALMOST met a celebrity the other day. Mr. Tommy Lee was apparently walking around Oslo and my friend spent rest of her day asking the customers of the coffee house where she works if they'd seen Bruce Lee earlier on. There's a song on TBWTAS that (to my musically untrained ears) appears to contain the riff from Omar's "There's Nothing Like This". I'd check which song it is, but I can't find my sister's copy of the album. I also heard my first ever Tigermilk song the other day, don't know what the song was. It was on national Norwegian radio, I think it's our equivalent of Radio 3, but I'm not completely sure. It's the sort of station that usually plays horrible "adult-pop" (you know.....the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle etc.) and occasionally Something For The Weekend if they really want to ROCK OUT!!! The radio presenter talked about Tigermilk being rare and that and I could just picture thousands of Norwegian 40 year olds sitting in their cars wondering why the bloody hell they were being told this shite. Tomorrow at 7.00 p.m. I shall be seeing my all-time favorite movie on a big screen for the first time in my life. The movie in question is the divine Withnail & I. Depression Music: So Hot - Spacemen 3 Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley The Eternal - Joy Division Nothern Sky - Nick Drake Cantos For Benjamin Britten - Arvo Pärt In A Lonely Place - New Order I find that particularly that last one is almost impossible to listen to, not only because of the lyrics, but because of how it was Ian Curtis' last song and so on. Oh, one more thing, "Today" from Surrealistic Pillow is one of the best songs EVER!! And another thing, I'll be well impressed if anyone can tell me the author of today's fine subject line. Right listen up listees:- The Scottydog one man entertainment show rolls into a town near you this weekend. Actually thats only true if you live in Blackpool (0.75% maybe). Yes you pesky North West sinisterians, for one weekend only you can marvel at the skills of The Dog when he makes his way to the Stakis hotel for The International Pool Tour. Gasp at the sight of me going out in the first round, Whince as i throw my cue across the room, Perk up as i buy a round for everyone to console myself, Tut at the woefully ironed B&S shirt (B&S content - sligh old dog), Fall over in shock as i offer to buy a second round, Sneak off as i complain about my bad luck all night... just so you know, in order not to waste space on the list ive waited nearly a week looking for something i can respond to, so that i can just mention offhand that i have had a promo copy of the new hefner album for nearly a week now. i shall proceed to do that in this missive, but dont worry, i will do it with such grace and subtlety that you wont even see the join. the bill wells/future pilot aka album is a thing of mournful beauty, but theres not actually as many tracks as there appears to be. i mean, there is, but half of them are just that robot who plays live with looper saying "fuuuuuture pilot aka", or variations on that theme. but its still great, as is the future pilot aka vs a galaxy of sound lp, which also has some bill wells stuff, and so presumably some stevie jackson stuff. useless information: going by the sleevenotes to the mini album theres only seven people in the octet. and one of thems a pastel, so she doesnt really count either. however (here it comes, pay attention) i havent had a chance to listen to any of this stuff for a while, as for NEARLY A WEEK i have had a PROMO COPY of THE NEW HEFNER ALBUM. that should do the trick. on the subject of stuart murdochs dancing, from close observation at bowlie it seems to be based on the 'swing your pants' style, as popularised by trevor and simon on saturday morning tv when we were little. stevie jackson went for the much more dignified 'slow nod', which served him quite well when used in conjunction with the more well known 'aloof gaze over the crowd'. look at my subject line! its the first line of a song i just wrote for second guess. one day i will break some hearts. observe: "once long ago i was happy i think i remember ropeswings and blackcurrant drink im pretty sure that you were there ive got this image in my head of flowers in your hair it doesnt work that way anymore brief moments of lucidity are all i can hope for they dont come often so understand i have to cling to them when i get the chance" it sort of relates to that innocence lost theme that someone was talking about, yeah? if anyone wants to know what second guess sound like, well, you know that feeling you get when youre lying awake in the early hours of the morning and suddenly you cant feel the bed below you, like youre floating or something, and you know that as soon as you move a muscle itll all be over, but for now everything makes sense and youve got the answers to all the questions, and youre trying to not move, to not even breathe, because you want the moment to go on as long as possible? well thats what second guess sound like. one day youll thank me from tjohn "and do you think its possible to be sensitive and strong?"
