Struan can't dance. It's official. Last night at the Snow Patrol gig in Maryhill he was standing in front of us, hands in pockets, right leg jiggling backwards and forwards completely out of time with the music. How we laughed, until we realised that it's actually the official band dance, as Stevie was doing exactly the same not ten yards away, with the added head movement (out of time with both leg and music). Richard meanwhile was up on stage shaking his maracas and wiggling his right leg. Those pesky rumours in the West End Festival programme about the special guest having some sort of connection to Snow Patrol's record label, it was Camera Obscura featuring Richard on drums. And I'm deeply saddened to say that much as I wanted to hate Camera Obscura for being thoroughly nasty and ruining the Bowlie football tournament, they were unutterably fantastic. Mind you, none of them bore any resemblance to any of their football team... Oh, for whoever was asking for periodic updates (Youn? I can't check the archives as my internet connection is knacked) about Struan's clothing, he was wearing a pair of black trousers and a white short sleeved shirt. It could have done with a bit of an iron. He looked like he was going to school but had forgotten his tie. He even had a schoolbag with him. Last night after Snow Patrol came off, they played The State I Am In over the PA. Cue a hugely embarrassed Struan clutching his bag and running out of the room as quickly as he could, bless his wee cotton socks :) Does anyone know how we can get a football team into the tournament at All Tamara's Ponies? I've decided to become the team manager, mostly because I only know of two of the original football stars going this time, and I'm sharing a chalet with both of them and that means I get to drink all the alcohol myself as it was several gallons of red wine consumed by said chalet mates that meant we didn't win the bloody thing the last time. I don't think they will necessarily see this abstinence as a good thing in the way that I do. It's for the good of Sinister, boys, you know. Nick Dastoor wrote some stuff about B&S ripping off other songs. The only one I can think of is that Mary Jo rips off A Winter's Tale by David Essex. There's a band playing at the 13th note in Glasgow on Thursday night called Shy Rights Movement, I have no idea what they sound like, but their name is (to coin a phrase) very Belle and Sebastian. Best thing that happened this weekend to me (apart from seeing Stuart and discovering how ace Camera Obscura are) - finding out that Hefner are playing in Glasgow in a fortnight. Worst thing, discovering musical bus shelters in Glasgow that play "Just Looking" by the Stereophonics if people stand up close to them. This is meant to make you want to go to T in the Park. It just made me want to abandon all pretence of tweeness and vandalise the bus shelter. I nearly bought an EP which was the Bill Wells Octet vs Future Pilot AKA, just because Stevie plays guitar on it. Can anyone tell me if it's any good? I bet this wasn't interesting to 75 people on the list, let alone 75%. But I live in hope. B&S content: Spain's top rock monthly "Rock Deluxe" contains a photo of Staurt David of Belle and Sebastian and Looper. In the photo Mr David is wearing a stripey t-shirt and a pair of glasses, and is sitting behing some kind of keyboard contraption. Beneath the photo is a review of Looper and the Gentle Waves, featuring singers and players from Belle and Sebastian. I know this because I had a look at it in the library, hoping that all the youngsters would see me and think, "Wow! That old timer's really groovy! Let's try and feel his nuts!" I hope that has satisfied those of you who want to discuss B&S on the list, it's not prohibited anyway, people do do it from time to time, there's no real need to set up another list, unless you want to be the boss or use it as a direct marketing tool. Tim, I did something very foolhardy the other day. I actually bought that Lee Perry record without waiting for your advice. Just as well if that's the best you can do. It's called "DRY ACID Lee Perry Productions 1968 - 1969" but it sounds more like it was recorded in 1948. It seems pleasant enough, but hardly earth shattering. The bass sound makes the mirror in the hall rattle though, which is quite an achievement. The Junior Byles and Friends album which Tim mentioned several months ago, "129 Beat Street Ja-Man Special 75-78", is much better, I reckon. Fear not if you can't get a croggy on the back of Duke's bike for the Powderham castle Rock Symphony gig, the whole shebang is coming to Pontevedra in Galicia to do it all again in the municipal sports stadium. Roger Daltry's friends are Eric Burdon (of The Animals, War and Eric Burdon), Zakky Starkey (son of Ringo Starr) and Simon Townsend (son of Pete Townsend), not to mention the huge fuck-off orchestra. No Paul Young though. I'm sure it'll be a great success. We had a medieval market here all weekend, really rather jolly. There was even a medieval Jimi Hendrix giving it some on the acoustic guitar. I see the new cartoon version of "The King and I" has arrived, surely destined to become a classic in the world of oonimation. I think St John's Wort is complete crap. yo, yo, sinister people. first, can i just say that lesley jo's posts are the highlight of my day? i love all (well, most) postings, but LJ -- yrs are sweet and touching and personal and original, and i Never skim through them. two: this past saturday, mercury rev and sparklehorse were playing in the little town of kingston, NY (about 2 hrs north of nyc), which is not far from where i live. and i thought, why the hell are they playing HERE?? turns out mercury rev (or, rather, a few members) are From kingston -- who knew? anyway, i's po' -- so po' that i can't afford the "o" and the "r". so i didn't go. it also looks like i won't be attending the Joan of Arc show this weekend, either, for the same reason, although i Do believe they are playing with CatPower next month, so... anyway, how did i spend my saturday night, if not listening to mercuryrev/sparklehorse, like i shoulda been? well, a trip to barnes&noble, of course. thirdly, i hereby recommend The Little Prince (antoine du sainte exupery -- i'm sure i spelled that wrong). how can a b&s fan go wrong with a story of a little boy who meets a fox in the desert who teaches the little boy the most important thing in life? the boy tames/is-tamed-by the fox, and they become fast friends... oh, the story is c h a r m i n g ... and so sad. i cried at the end (i always cry at endings), which was quite embarrassing, as i was on the metro-north commuter train, on my way home from work.... ramble, ramlbe, and never as good as lesleyjo... take care, marie xoxo === *********************************************** * "if you can hold yr breath * * you can touch the sand with yr hand" * * -karate * *********************************************** _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello chaps, Sorry I haven't written for a while. The fact is, I have been out of the country on a fact finding mission. I set off with the intention of going all the way to Misery, which is a minor provincial town in an obscure former Soviet republic named Sobriety, but I was kidnapped by bandits, blindfolded, abused abominably, then shuttled between the twin rough encampments of Drunk and Disgusting. So you see, I have an excuse. My time in captivity made me realise that, by Jingo, I have been curmudgeonly and closed-minded all these years. So, since my return, I have taken the opportunity to listen with a new open-mindedness to all the recommendations which some of you have been kind enough to post for me while I've been away. On the subject of the Jefferson Airplane, well, how wrong I have been! They are indeed not the kind of addled, stinking hippy filth that should have no place anywhere near audio equipment in a civilised country. No! 'Surrealistic Pillow' is an appropriate and fabulous name for an album so packed full of passion, fervour and wit. Oh yes, it also seems that Grace Slick does not sing like a half-strangled harpy with a twice life-sized replica of the head of Joan Baez shoved up her arse, after all. I quite agree with The Artist Soon To Be Known As Carsmile Steve Again that the Bee Gees are lovely. And their 1960s Hollies-inspired (and oh! how inspired!) 1960s output is every bit as delightful as the 1970s tight pants and wind machine era and the 1990s elder statesmen of transglobal middle of the road pop phase. Brilliance piles upon brilliance, and not once in their careers have they been bandwagon-jumping, crap-haired shovels of guano. My favourite things of all are the fabulous songs they have written for others: 'Heartbreaker', for example, must have been just that for those Bacharach and David fellows. Their hearts must have broken clean in two when they realised what Dionne Warwick could have done if she had been given a properly constructed song to sing. That nice Alasdair Cooke wrote from America how much he loved the Pixies. Which is admirable for a fellow of his age. Rather like his football skills and his lovely thighs. Anyway, it turns out that he is absolutely right about the Pixies. How I ever thought they sounded like a poor quality, tracheotomised Krokus tribute with an unhealthy farm animal fixation snorting vim and getting low down and dirty with a cattle prod in a pigsty, I can't understand. That loud/soft thing they do is so exciting! And that science fiction thing is so cool! Sadly, Mister Miller, I can't tell you anything about those strange records you mention, on the grounds that Ms. Ross was quite right and I haven't the first foggiest idea what reggae is about. Except 'I Shot The Sheriff' by Eric Clapton. He invented the guitar, you know. Ah, and the dear old Who's 1970s output. What a pleasure it was to listen to it again after all these years. And how true it is that they can't be understood as sweaty, unpalatable, macho, male-menopausal rawk. Because, behind all the grunting and the shouting, the power chords and the cock-thrusting, the lyrics show genuine sensitivity and, yes, even fragility. Especially on 'Squeeze Box'. Why I ever saw them as QPR-supporting, standard issue arena rock pish, less appealing than finding a lump of old, dried Meatloaf jism on your spicy beanburger, I will never know. Sinister: What's that cookin' at the palace tonight

Hi chums, I bought some records at the weekend, and today as a matter of fact. Yesterday I bought two singles, one of which was "Waiting for a train" by Flash and the Pan, the top summer 1983 hit, it's great, however, the other, was a Hurrah! single which I bought since Tim Hopkins and the Duke reckon they're great, and I don't believe I've ever heard them before. However I can tell you here and now that it's rubbish, totally boring complete rubbish. Polytechnic of Pop? School of SHITE more like! OK Belle and Sebastian news, or at least vaguely related, there's going to be a new V-Twin single out soon, followed by an album some time. Out of lots of young bands, I'd be more tempted to buy V-Twin records not because they are completely brilliant or anything as stands, but they do different stuff and I believe have the potential to be good in time. Also, it seems that the bloke who did the "Lego Street Preachers" which are the Manic Street Preachers immortalized in little lego blokes, is going to do Belle and Sebastian too, which should be a laugh. I've also just bought the Beta Band's record, which so far is pretty good, if you read the NME last week you'll have seen them going on about how their record is (according to themselves) "Rubbish", and "Definitely one of the worst records this year". That's not true, it's pretty good. I also bought the Shack record, but I haven't listened to it yet, maybe I'll report on that one later. Me and some other people might be running a club in Glasgow pretty soon, so hopefully some of you might be able to make it along, we think it's going to be called "B-Movie" at the moment, and it'll probably be a once-a-month affair, and it probably won't cost much, I for one don't plan to make a profit out of it, and I'm sure the others will feel the same. Also, some of you might be interested, I dug out that old document I put together with loads of Belle and Sebastian articles on it, plus I've found a shedload more in my desk at work, so I'm going to stick it all up on my website for you to look at some time in the next week. ~~....~~ The subject line is not related to Hans Moleman (my first and only yellow reference), but the creepy Mass Blind date I became entangled in that i told you about, and Spanners feared may be a cult initiation thing. Before i go down that road however, i must add some exciting news to the depression thread. I read this morning that they ( 'they' being the starchy powers that be) are making Tortilla chips laced with St Johns Wort! These are part of a new herbalised snack market sector that is apparantly kicking in the states. So you really will be able to take comfort in junk food soon. Bio-prozac rules. Well, my mass blind date didnt go according to plan exactly, but was an interesting evening nonetheless. Half thinking it was a scam a la Shooting Fish, i wandered up Cleveland st looking for no:100. I gaped in khaki horror at the gap between numbers 99 and 103. A derelict building for let. Scam, SCAM, SCRAM! I thought disheartedly, before realising that 100 is actually an even number and was on the other side of the street. The premise was that after filling in and emailing an intimate questionaire on life, love and blushes, my perfect match at the party of 100 strangers would be sat opposite me at the table. The room was full of lovely touchy feely folk, any one of whome would have made me a happy camper for the evening, and i even had considered the possibility that my date may be male, as no such eliminating questions were asked! HOWEVER. The girl opposite me was an 18 year old A- level student, who sat next to her friend and talked to her all night, both ignoring their blind dates. Its not the age i minded, or the fact she was quiet. But to be queit, dull AND rude is inexcusable. Worse still she was the spitting image of Celine Dion, and everytime she flashed her side profile i ducked for cover in case her Quebecian missile silo of a nose poked me in the eye. How could Celine Dion be my perfect match?? I was relieved when she lost her ring and i was able to fake looking for it under the table in a bid to avoid having to see her or try in vain to make converstaion with her. To assist me in my search i took the candlestick holder under with me and sat crossed leg beneath the diners. It was strangely seductive being under the banquet table by candlelight, looking at all the shiny shoes and stockinged toes in the flicker of the flames. But paranoia about the plastic table cloth and the slight aroma of singeing made me return to my seat. It was then i discoverd my real date for the evening was at the other end of the table. The poisoned witch that was Celine had switched seating labels with my true date so she could sit with her dead pan fried! The bloke next to me and i got up in disgust and moved our chairs to the other end of the table, abandoning the anti dates. My real date was a real funny, spanish looking girl called Cat Miles Something. With a name like that she had to be a winner. Our first conversation was twisted. She managed to almost convince me she used to be a man, and her neckscarve was actually covering up her adams apple. I'm not a gullable person but not wanting to offend her either way, sort of went along with the joke. She even revealed to me that she has on ocassion used mens urinals, to unfortunate results. While we didnt fall in love over our kebabs or anything had a laugh and I gave her my email address so I'll hopefully catch her on the keys. The embarassing answers fron the questionairre were then used as a parlour game..."find the person who did X", great for meeting even more people. But embarassing for the girl who had to look 99 people in the eyes after they all found out she once let out a series of fanny (uk) farts in a business meeting! She promptly went home. You should se my face. Sunburnt. BADLY. Really. It's as red as those cherrytomatos I ate on saturday. Please, do not write anything that makes me laugh, 'cause I can't change the expression on my face without feeling this burning sensation on my face. Even lifting my eyebrowns makes me scream inside. Ah yes, festivalfrenzy. 20000 finns (and quite a few swedes, which was surprising) going bonkers while Blur is playing Song2. Yes, you should've been there. Or maybe not. Blur was shit, you see. Oh, but I'm getting ahead of things now. So here, since I'm going to be a FAMOUS popjournalist, is my little list of bands that performed at Provinssirock 1999. -Blur: A bit shit, like I said. But that's my own fault, I haven't listened to that new album almost at all. But the encores were good, the old stuff. And Jubilee rocked. -Manic Street Preachers: Ah yes, now were talking. One of the highpoints of the festival. What I admire the most about them is their refusal to play encores. "Oh, we'll just go away for a while and let them clap their hands together, then we'll come back and thank them and continue playing". Urgh. Blur did that twice. -Stereophonics: Nope, they cancelled. =( -Jimi Tenor: Spending my time in the beertent while he played. Didn't see much of him, but it sounded pretty good. -Skunk Anasie: Bollocks. I've never liked them and never will. "Selling Jesus" is a good song, though. -"Shut up now, no-one wants to hear this." And so he shut himself up. Wore something B&S-related every day in there. A few fingers pointed at my direction, but no-one came up to me to talk, so I didn't meet any new people. Which was one of the reasons I wanted to get there. But no, I just strolled around the festival-area, ate food and drank a few beers. But one thing that a noticed there: about 50 per cent of the people who go to festivals are idiots. Really. It's so nice to sit on the grass on sunday morning when an idiot comes up to you and asks if I have any booze, and when I say "no" he just insists that I have and la-di-da-di-di-da (du-dem-da-dum-dadada-dum). And really, where do those strange hippie people live when they aren't utterly pissed/stoned/drugged up on the campingarea? Just a thought. And the best thing to do when you wake up in those festivals: Look for the red bitemarks on peoples necks. Some people try to hide them, some people carry them with pride. Why? Only God knows, and if he's reading this, I hope he doesn't answer. Why some some people (usually 16-year old teens) want to show that they had a wild two minutes in a tent with a guy/girl they've never met (two minutes that end up when the guy gets his dick out and after 90 seconds of oh, so clumsy and passionate penetration it's all over, which is usally the case), I have no idea. I hope that sentance made some sense. And NO, I'm not talking about myself, you silly people. Really, I have friends that can back me up on that one. Ah well, life is sweet.
