Hiya :) ooh, I've got lots to say about some of the threads going on, so let's get started... About liking B&S less if they were horribly ugly beasts with horns, hooves, and pointed tails, and they didn't share their treats with you (or something like that): I thought about it a bit and I've come to the conclusion that their looks really are inconsequential (yes, even if they all sported zz top-like beards... yes, even the ladies). I remember not being entirely bowled over when I first saw pictures of the group ("Oh, so that's what they look like...um, yay.", "Al, that's not belle and sebastian, that's the cast of three's company. THIS is what b&s look like" <hands me a photo> "oooh, that's what they look like......um, yay"), but that's only because I had this mental image of them all as being gods among men (and women (and children (and, oh, let's not forget the elderly))). I think, in a way, I was disappointed when I did see what they looked like because all the mystique surrounding them was lost. It's like seeing someone you really fancy several times but never really talking to him/her. You sort of generate this amazing personality in your head and then you finally talk to said party and find out he/she is a total twat (not that B&S aren't lovely, of course) and that you really want to kick his/her arse because he/she is really she/he and.. ah nevermind... about helter skelter being the first "true" hard rock song: pfft, I wouldn't know, but I did listen to the White Album again for the first time after a long time and I was amazed at how good it was! and to throw in some Who content for all you Who fans out there, I remember reading that Paul wrote Helter Skelter after reading that the Who had recorded the loudest, raunchiest rock song ever. :P And of course, the song is about a slide, and nothing more, so don't go out on a killing spree because of it! finally, a couple of melodies "lifted" by b&s: Dog On Wheels: the trumpet part (when it plays a bit o' harmony) sounds like the hawaii five-o theme (it does, dammit!!! and if you disagree, I'll meet you after school by the bike racks and we can have a -- um -- discussion...yeah) A Century Of Fakers: the sus chord riff at the end of some of the verses sounds like it came straight from the byrds' version of mr. tambourine man (it does, dammit!!! if you dig up your byrds album -- whichever one it was -- and listen to 'mr. tambourine man' you shall see that the riff is missing. why, you ask? because it's been stolen!!) and finally, A Century of Elvis: the whole song sounds vaguely familiar, but the narrative done by Stu D is mixed so loud that I can barely hear the backing instrumentation. this is a tough one and i've been devoting all my spare time to figuring out which song this most closely resembles. any help would be appreciated! that's all for now, i shall leave you all in peace. all you people reading these emails at work: GET BACK TO WORK!! p.s. a quick, shameless plug: pt.2 of my eliza comic strip is up: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Chateau/9889/ Allen (ICQ: #35152981) -- "Long afloat on shipless oceans I did all my best to smile Till your singing eyes and fingers Drew me loving to your isle." -- Song to the Siren, Tim Buckley. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". In a little while from now, if I'm not feeling any less sour, I promise myself to treat myself and join the Jeepster list, and climbing to the top, I'm going to slag myself right off, in an effort to make it clear to who.....etc. I hope I don't find out though, otherwise I might get thumped by myself at the next picnic and have to run into the nearest public lavatories to hide from myself. I'm a huge Stevie Jackson fan so I guess I should come to his defense or something. I've always thought he's one of the most intelligent and sensitve lead players out there. I mean, the solo to "Fox in the Snow" is just pure brilliance (even if it is a tad simplistic). Another fave Stevie moment is the slide leads in the background of "Rollercoaster Ride" especially the one that immediately follows "Take Judy with the bow and arrow she's a mastermind." His harmonica on "Me and the Major" and "On the Radio" are quite tasty too. I think his playing was alot more to the forefront on IYFS than TBWTAS but he's still aces in my book all the way around. Sinister: Connections

I was surprised they were at Bowlie, and then I saw her in one of their videos.<< Sleater-Kinney are from my hometown (Portland, Oregon, USA...) so I flipped when I saw Corin Tucker in the Dirty Dream #2 video. The only connection I can think of is that, while Sleater-Kinney are on the Kill Rock Stars label in the US, they're on Matador in the UK, while Belle & Sebastian are on Jeepster in the UK, but they're on Matador here. So, they're both on Matador in each other's countries. Plus, I think they share a very similar independent-pop idealism, though Sleater-Kinney is much noisier (an arbitrary distinction, methinks) than B&S. I'd like to say that, as all you residents of Glasgow well know, it's great to live in the same town as a 'pop star' you admire, and see them walking around doing their shopping and things. Hello everyone, I have read with interest the various posts about the *look* of Belle & Sebastian, and the sub-thread with regard to Isobel's looks (which has seemed a bit harsh I must say), and although it struck me as having come about as a result of a somewhat offhand flip comment from Monsieur Dastoooor, I believe it was, it has been replied to seriously from several quarters. What struck me was that a) (I got told off for long paragraphs - probably quite rightly - so here goes with nice letters and brackets..) They do look kind of odd but, first few sightings (to the non-obsessive, anyway) fairly unmemorable. Not to say that is bad, but just in the way that most people are unmemorable if you've had no cause to remember them. e.g: I love Mercury Rev to bits and have done for ages, but still can't remember what the drummer looks like. But that could be a drummer thing. The point is though, that I am sure none of us really do want to judge people solely on appearance, but the bottom line is that if Belle and Sebastian looked like KISS, their appeal would somehow be altered rather dramatically (tho imagine.. how cool?!) It is comforting that this band of bods who look fairly normal and sing songs that seem rooted in the everyday not only exist out there for us to enjoy and identify with, but also - by anyone's standards - write damn fine songs that you can really get your teeth into on intellectual and musical levels as well as the emotional. I wouldn't want to lose sight of the emotional impact, and certainly for me that is their bulk of their appeal, but it is the fact that I can take pleasure in more than that which put B&S up there for me. I'm not sure where this is going now (forgive me - I did drink rather a lot at lunchtime) but I think I was trying to say that it's good B&S look normal cos it's easy to feel some sort of identification with them, and it's easy to take pleasure in their musical (not commercial, tho the whole Brit thing was deeply satisfying on many levels) achievements becuase somehow they're like us, normal people. Just far more talented. b) I do find it a bit disconcerting the Isobel-bashing that's been going. She's not my sort of lady looks-wise, but I still think she's rather pretty and I know one of my friends (you know who you are, JD) is harbouring an obsession bordering on the unhealthy. Cold fish she is not. But each to their own I suppose. And as for me, the red-headed girl who sang with the backing singers at Bowlie was way foxier and, as evinced by after, can really dance.. Apologies for being so serious for a friday afternoon - drinking at lunchtime you get maudlin round 5 o'clock... have a good weekend all, spoon PS I managed to avoid being pretentious and using the word *quotidien* in the above, but I like it so much I will now. Dear all, Not much to say, a couple of comments and a couple of questions. On the subject of The Beach Boys "Friends" I think it's a lovely album. There are few songs we could do without but so many of them are gorgeous. I love that naieve, slightly loopy feel. And I think there's a similarity in spirit at least between late 60s Beach Boys and B&S. It's a home made, amateur yet endearing thing. "Helter Skelter" is the earliest hard rock song I've ever heard. Certainly harder than most music which passes itself off as rock. Of course it can't really be hard rock (irony ahoy) as it's by that drippy wimpy simpering balladeering Paul McCartney. What a wuss! 2 questions: What is the link between the woman from Sleater Kinney and B&S? I was surprised they were at Bowlie, and then I saw her in one of their videos. Am I right in thinking if we've ordered our Tigermilks from Jeepster we might get them a bit early? I only ask cos (irony of ironies) I'm going to Glasgow for a week on the day it's released so it's gonna be sitting in my house while I'm far far away yet near where it's coming from. (Does anyone understand that last sentence?) I didn't have a heaving-bosom dress, because it wasn't a 'prom' and the budjet for my attire was probably considerably smaller. I wore a vintage (fifties) flowerprint dress, if you're interested.) wow, bigstu's lovelife sounds like one of the novels I got free with just seventeen a couple of weeks ago. I don't know about this Evie, she sounds sinister. Just the name, though, we don't really know much else about her, do we? You should all wish me luck, as I'll be balancing any number of plates and glasses staring my first ever job in Cafe Rouge. scary. Sinister: The eye of the beholder

Hello Sinisterines- I got myself scolded by Sandcastle Records (in a VERY polite, friendly, non-offensive way) who reminded me that Honey didn't want loquacious people like me hogging the list. So I haven't posted in a while. BUT- this whole 'looks' thing is offensive and demeaning. I wouldn't want to prevent any Sinisterine from expressing their honest opinion, but if that opinion is that they would 'hate' the band if they weren't good-looking, the person expressing it is revealing, at the very least, their own narrow, shallow standard of 'beauty'. Although I don't happen to think any member of B&S is ugly in the least (and make no secret of my crush on cuddly Stuart M.), it wouldn't matter if they were- their MUSIC would still be beautiful. I happen to be too nice to name names, but if I hated bands that had members I found not attractive at all, I would hate both Arab Strap and Supergrass, and I really like those bands, and also realize there are plenty of people who DO find them attractive. So, in answer to the question, I most certainly would like Belle & Sebastian if they were ugly, as long as their music sounded the same. And everybody is beautiful to somebody. I would be really, really ashamed to admit that I only liked a band because of the way they looked. Perhaps the people who did that were just being facetious...? I'd like to think so. Also, and this is speaking as somebody who's never had the inclination to be a skirt-chaser (and what the hell does 'Gay Xchange' mean, anyway? I've read this phrase in several posts), I think that Isobel is beautiful and that mean, nasty prom girl who slagged her hair is simply jealous.
