Hello you lot, You'll never believe what I saw on telly yesterday. There I was settled down for another afternoon of strawberries, cream and the thwack of racket upon ball. They'd just shown another round of clips of Anna bloody Kournikova (Jamaica in Roma) and her omnipresent tush (with Brett Anderson hollering "She's in fashion" over the top, fergawdsakes) when the camera panned to the crowd. And there he was - face painted with a Union Jack, holding aloft his Big Breakfast "You Beauty" sign, leading the crowd with a chant of "Oggy, Oggy, Oggy"...our very own number one seed - Thim H!O!P!kins. Interesting that young Keith should mention "Waiting for a train" by Flash and the Pan last week, since this record actually mentioned Stu and Beanz a good decade before Belle and Sebastian formed. I think we've all underestimated Flash and the Pan, they obviously had special powers of foresight. Many of you will be venturing to London Towne tomorrow to see Lee Hazlewood. I can't go, sadly. He was in the paper yesterday talking about how he loved the laydeez, and swearing a lot. There really is no call for that sort of potty mouth, even if you are a legend. Anyway, as I said, I'm not going. Instead, tonight Matthew I'm going to watch Harry Hill pretending to be Morissey. I trust you're all jealous. Except Wumpkinny and JJ cos they're going too. Sinister: the kids predict the future

this is my first post so i don't know if what i am about to write is already known but here it goes anyway.....between the :15 and :20 second mark of "if you're feeling sinister," does any one else here the kids in the background scream "the boy with the arab strab"? actually, i think it's two different kids and it actually sounds more like "the boy....wit de arab stwrap." i'm not sure if i'm correct in my assumption but i've listened to it many times over and it's sounds like i'm right. anyway, this is my first post, as mentioned before. i got out of the nursery about a week and a half ago but i didn't finish finals until this wednesday. school goes on deep into june in new york. i saw ben folds five in central park on thursday. while in the city, i also bought the looper cd, a b&s bootleg ("the fall of belgium", a show in the fall of '98), and pavement's "crooked rain, crooked rain" (my friend finally demanded his copy back so i had to buy my own). i'm currently reading "Eureka Street" by robert mcliam wilson but i should be done with that by tonight. i'll probably begin "down and out in paris and london" by orwell tomorrow. well, that's all for now -chris +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Hi, nothing really very interesting in this post, sorry everyone. but im feeling a bit down after another not very good night out, after failing to 'give it large' at the union. im just very tired after a rather non-everything kinda term. does anyone else feel like that? god at least exam hell is over. prey i get a 2:1. or else i will feel even worse. mm i heard someone across my road playing Judy and the Dream of Horses today, it was quite pleasent and made me smile. i still havent in my life met anyone who is remotely as into belle and sebastaian as i am yet, which i am a bit disappointed about. that'd be good. i want to go to some of these club places that play some b&s and likewise bands, i think it'd be really cool, maybe when i get back home, but then i'd prob'ly be too scared as none of my friends are really into that kinda scene. Yes, i will jump to isobel's defence too, ms. Lesley Jo and all you other bel-defenders, i think she is a lovely girl. Boo-sucks to anyone who thinks differently, nya-nya nya...urgh im not looking forward to going home, 16 weeks of dullness really, and only one year left before i have to join the Real World. its just too scary i dont even want to think about it. oh well, id better go before this post gets even more depressing. I can see for miles, yes... thats early on-- and i once got into a discussion about early punk and the first street rock and roll songs, and he told me, that in his opinion, the first would have to be "Saturday Night" by Elton John... (I mean thats not quite as old as the others, but it's very punk-ish....) i dunno. I have a webpage that hasnt been touched in months... it was the product of the moment, an expression of the misery that was january and february. it was on "xoom", and they put up those ugly banners... then i realized that because im with mediaone, they give me 10 megs... HOLAAAA just for the rekkid, i didn't know what most of B/s looked like till i saw them in DC in person. i didn't even know which stuart was which, or who they were. i knew isobel cos her picture was in the puncture article and i thought she was a stone cold girly fox. and YEAH Archel, you are a star, you brighten my first sinister-day for a long time since i've been stewing in my own juices and ignoring my email...........and the outraageousness of the anti-isobel stance cannot be tolerated much longer. the GRRRLS of BELLE Rule Fo-Evah, t hey are fantabulicious and splendiferociously fabtastical, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a big ole stick in the mud. Oooh!! thems fightin words!! but yes. Stuey M is a luvverly lad, as is the stylin' Mick, babetastic city!!! in that platonic kinda way. i wanna put them on my shelf like precious moments dolls and just look at em all day long, they're so kewl. In any case, i would have been foaming at the mouth about the isobel bashing, but i was too busy being away and dreaming dirty dreams about my date with art girl, more later. xavierr..........the magic of felt guitarist is unbelievable, it puts me in a trance, i agree most vociferously with your praise, and would like ot hear about your acoustic guitar, when i finally get up off my ass and re-begin writing my sinister and email friends at home and abroad. Andrea: i wish i lived somewhere that sleater kinney got played constantly. they get my blood boiling. they are also super cuties. i have grown to like corin's voice (which i once read described as "ululating") a friend of mine actually pointed out the comparison between it and Belinda Carlisle, if you listen close you can catch a glimpse. but i have to SAY i think it's awfully harsh to just dismiss any "loud" female singers as being angry women singing about being angry, or whatever that quote was. i don't find S/K to be anywhere near as one-dimensional as that seems to be, they sing about lots of different things, and they have fabulously tight melodic music with so much energy wound up in it, and harmony, yes harmony. And if you would say PJ harvey is in that shallow category, you would receive a prompt SPANKING! from yours truly, cuz there is no way PJ is some vague ranting bitch, just cos she makes a bit of noise, don't mean there isn't substance in there. it jus tseems incredibly sexist to say such a thing. Male singers don't get categorized in the same way. just cos a girl is loud and outspoken, doesn't mean they are just bitchy and trying to cop an attitude for the hell of it.. a few of them are (ahem, Alanis) but it's just terrible to put any girl in that slot for no apparent reason. and i honestly don't mean to be mean about it, it jsut concerns me deeply, and i have strong opinions on that subject, so please dont' take it personally. i like to argue about those things. Gull Powa!! c'mon, sisterhood is powerful. interestingly--i spent the other night in a bar wit my dyke frend sam. i had been out for oh......lets see.....since 10 AM the previous morning, i picked up art girl (amanda her name) and we trooped to st louis and hung out all day, then i stayed over cos it was raining like FUCKING HELL when i took her home, and we had a bottle of blackberry merlot and listened to yo la tengo, and i stayed in town the next day and got really weepy, so sam wanted me to go out to the bar with her. there were more ppl in there than usual, and i started out feeling pretty miserable, i was in a tizzy over artgirl and wanted to sit alone and write a poem or something, and all the sad songs they played on the jukebox (BASTARDS play ABBA or die!!) were making me cry. but then a boy i thought was gay dragged me out to the dance floor, along with this married bi-girl who was flirting outrageously with me but wasn't about to get NONE of what i got. and i acutally danced. i danced most best to Madonna's Like a Prayer, and that song by Faithless that i rather like a lot. but i dont' like disco songs. i danced pretty well. i felt good. then supposed gay boy started hitting on me and tried to get me to drink a 'russian Quaalude" and i refused, and then sam told me later his roommate said he was straight. the bastard ASKED me "are you a dyke" and i said yes. what the fuck did he want??? hehe. ppl kept telling me how beautiful or sexy i was and it was creeping me out big time. b ut i guess it did up my self esteem a bit, cos i'd been feeling terribly ugly the past couple days and not too good about myself. so i had fun in a gay bar. i danced. oh yeah. when me and amanda were shopping at Hullaballoo she got this hilarious ruffled tuxedo shirt and plaid bellbottoms. so we decided that she would wear this, and i would wear my orange/green flowered yeye- dress with the holes cut out of the side, and some time we'll go on a butch-femme date. which promises to lead to many opportunities for flirting and being basically naughty. it's kind of odd for me to be more girly, but she's taller than me by a couple inches, and stronger and her hair is shorter. she has broad strong hands that drive me crazy and beautiful arms. i want her to sweep me off my feet. the other reason we decided on that butch-femme thing, was her wallet is Harley=davidson, and mine has Sanrio's Badtz-Maru. which is decidedly NOT very butch. although of the sanrio characters, badtz-maru would be the designated butchest bad-ass of them all, and spotty dotty would be the pansy-ass losers who are in the cheerleading squad, and hello kitty would be the dreamiest Isobel=type babe. AAAAAACK!!! Corin tucker is SOOOO cute. it's too bad she has a boyfriend. <:( i think the fact that B/S are so talented and down-home and and charming, makes them seem more physically attractive. if they were a bunch of assholes i'd find reasons to think they were ugly. personality is like 90% of physical attractiveness for me. someone might seem cute at first, then you find out they are totaly lame, and they don't seem all that cute anymore. at least that's they way it happens for me, which is why i'm freaking out right now because artgirl turns out to be the most wonderful and fascinating person ASIDE from being sexy as hell. Thank you so much to Jennifer Pulpbot for exactly encapsulating what I feel about Sleater-Kinney. PJ Harvey, who I think is exceptional, is an Angry Woman (also a Sad Woman and an Angry Man and a Hurt Man and a Psychotic Woman, but I'll get on to my point..). Sleater-Kinney, while not PJ, are not Alanis Morrissette, thank you. Sleater-Kinney grew out of the ashes of the riot grrrrl movement, which, as opposed to the icky macho Seattle movement, was strictly P!O!P! Fanzines, bellybuttons, magic markers and cheap shows for the kids equals P!O!P! But Sleater-Kinney are a pop band with no agenda but to make great music, which they do. It's catchy, fun, riotous without being strident or political, lots of joyful noise. Corin's voice has, yes, been described as being like Jello Biafra. Also like Siouxie Sioux. Also like 'Belinda Carlisle crossed with Poly Styrene'. All these people's voices annoyed people, yet I'll bet almost every one of you think at least one of them is great. I think they're all super 'cept Biafra. Okay no more posts for a while. There are people on this list who will worry themselves and me if I post too much. Is there REALLY such a thing, or do some people just not like hearing from me? There are people who post much more frequently than myself, though not in such a short time frame perhaps......? All this anxiety caused by precisely one private e-mail I received from a Sinisterine asking me nicely (and I'm not being facetious, it was REALLY nice, not aggressive or rude) not to post so much. Sinister: A Long, Thought-out Post on Belle & Sebastian

Hello, You know, I thought a lot about this subject while I was making the 10-hour jaunt from Charleston to New York, and I will try to share some of the thoughts that bounced around in my head as I experienced the charm of the highway strip. Regarding Maurice Deebank, Arthur Lee and Steve Cropper, Ben did an excellent job of covering most of what I would have had to say. Much better than I could in fact, since I don't play guitar. I never meant to suggest Stevie should try to emulate Arthur Lee, as I think he did a good job of it in "Expectations." It's just that Belle & Sebastian are a wonderful band that is very capable of flirting with different kinds of songs. You have the bossanova of "Ease Your Feet," the Stereolab-iness of "Sleep the Clock Around" (on the session version anyhow), the McCarthy-ism (hehe) of "Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie," the Love-liness of "Dog on Wheels" and "Expectations," and numerous others. But for a large part, it seems to me that Stevie's guitar-playing is either played down in such songs (like in "Electronic Renaissance,") or he just plays like he always does. It's not that I think the rest of the members of the band are opposed to this or anything. In Stuart's solo recordings pre-B&S, they seemed to sound pretty much like Stevie's style. But, listening to "String Bean Jean," I just haven't heard a B&S song with a guitar part I liked this much, other than maybe "A Century of Fakers." I might be worried that with a different guitar player they might sound very bad, but I am so sure that I wouldn't mind because Stevie doesn't play at all on DOW and I love it immensely. The playing on it even vaguely reminds me of their current way of it, but only just that little bit janglier at times. And I suppose that's what it all breaks down to. Though I love soul and the guitar playing that comes along with it, I'll always be a sucker for jangly guitars. I still love B&S, but sometimes I think about these sorts of things. Perhaps it's a little too critical, I admit. Also, in case some of you missed it, Stevie once was quoted in a newspaper as saying Steve Cropper was his all-time favorite guitarist. I saved the post somewhere... Anyway, I'm not about to stop listening to B&S, but if they were to break up, I'd be that much less disappointed, knowing that the Stuarts' songs are gorgeous with various other musicians, and indeed Stuart M sounds fine all on his lonesome, so we don't have Moz-like inconsistency laying ahead if such a change ever occurs. /"\_/"\_/"\ Brian Pennington, a.k.a.
