Hello everyone. Just a quick note to remind you about the London picnics. I'm told that you can only leave from one of the doorways at Camden Town tube, so we'll meet at the exit one. I'll be the small girl wearing between one and nine upside down badges, depending on how sure I'm feeling tomorrow and the day after of recognising/being recognised by you lot. I wanted to share a wonderful moment with you all. Last night waiting hot and sweaty for a tube on Leicester Square underground station, what should I see but a giant Tower Records poster advertising Tigermilk. Who'd have thought it, eh? Quite cheered me up it did. For a moment it was like being in a parallel universe. love spoon (incidently, re the subject line this is acheived by the mixture of six parts vodka, two parts dry vermouth, a dash of Tabasco sauce - or to taste - and a large cooked shrimp. According to my new martini book. Go on - indulge yourself. Sinister: A rose by anyother name would smell just as sweet

There are several quintessential moments in a girl's (in this case mine) life: graduating from college, getting married, becoming a mother, and having the right boy smile at you. So, none of these but the latter has happened to me yet. For now, the last enough. On Wednesday, while walking up to class in a hazey daze from not getting enough sleep this random boy who I have never met gave me a rose. No cheesey pickup line attached, just a shy smile as he said, "If you put it in water the other bud will bloom." I was flustered and surprised that I don't even know if I said thank you. Though, it had to be one of the most beautiful gestures that has melted away all of my worries and unhappiness. Later that day, I was waiting at the dmv while my roommate was getting a state id. We were there for over an hour and a half with everyone there completely disgruntled and angry at being there. Being there with all that angst, just put things into perspective for me. Everyone was there was upset and unhappy for something they can't change and that really isn't worth the energy to be sad about. Admist all of that gloom, I was happy. I'm sure I was also very annoying. But I won't focus on that part. I think the key when things get overwhelming is to focus on the small details. Those are my loves. But I will stop before someone here begins to wonder if they're reading 'Chicken Soup for the Listerine's Soul'. I'm leaving in three hours on a roadtrip (one of my favorite things in the world) to visit my best friend who is working in Arizona for the summer. By the time she returns here, I'll have escaped back home in North Carolina. It so hard seeing friends and knowing that theres a good chance it'll be the last time you'll see them. Well, I know that when I return on Tuesday I'll have an overabundance of e-mails from all of you lovely loquacious lads and lasses (how's that for alliteration?) so I just wanted to leave a note of mine before then. Sorry, that it has no B&S content. Maybe I can make up for it by shameless flattery of both the list and the list Mummy, dear honey. Both of which I adore immensely. And honey always reminds me of Winnie the Pooh - which invariably puts me in a wonderous mood. In fact, I'll end my note with a Pooh (Winnie the, that is) inspired quote: "When waking in the morning remember that whether your first thought is 'What's for breakfast?' or 'I wonder what exciting is going to happen today', its the same thing." Well, I'm off like a prom dress (that was dedicated to not so nasty but amazingly amusing you prom girl, hehe). It's like valentine's day in that it's supposed to be about love but is more of a letdown and a pain, and it's like a birthday in that, even once a year, it's still not fun to have with the family. Hello Funsters, I was thinking to myself that a nice listen of "I Know Where the Summer Goes," would be apt, and as I was doing so, I took note of the cover art once more. What should I notice on the EP but a hammer and sickle-looking flag lying below the fellow who did Postcard. Anyone know the story surrounding that? I must say I'm curious. Am I correct in remembering them saying B&S are socialists? I don't really mind them brandishing a communist flag, at least the communists got the socialist bit right... Anyway, it must be Murphy's Law that the world would end on Sunday. I was looking forward to seeing a nice show, too. My houseguests will be pissed, I can tell you that. Who does that Amadeus fellow think he is, anyway? You know there was a religion based here in the US once upon a time. Seems they thought that the world would end on...eh, well I forget the date, but it was sometime in the 19th century. Well, the day came and all of the members of this religion (I'll be nice and not call it a cult) came out to worship for their last day on Earth...then the day passed and nothing happened. As you might imagine, they don't have quite as many adherents these days. I also recall something about an interesting Utopian society. They decided that none of them would have children, ever. They added to their ranks by converts, rather than having children. Funnily enough, they too aren't around anymore. Sinister: Glasgow picnic

Due to the crappy weather that often afflicts these parts, expecially when the word "picnic" is mentioned, we have decided to have the meet-up in the pub, dispensing with the need for crawling around bandstands and bonding under small umbrellas. So Uisge Beatha (end bit nearest the furniture shop), Woodlands Road, 3pm, Sunday. If you don't know where it is, firstly you should be ashamed for not coming to the last meet-up and secondly, mail me and I'll tell you. I might have the regulation blue duffel coat on. Lots of good "spot all the places/people you recognise" opportunities for long-time West End inhabitees like me. Those not coming this weekend, make sure you do go to Divine at the Art School next Saturday (Tigermilk promo night). But someone else can think of a pub to meet in for that. Then two days later it's Godspeed You Black Emperor, with a Sinister presence of at least three in the audience. Good Lord that was a ridiculously parochial posting. Take heed of what the good man Carsmile says. Whistler are ace and you will probably all love them, or at least like them a bit. Is that a bit generalised?. Can I recommend Camera Obscura again too? Can I remind everyone there are still lots of tickets left for All Tim Henman's Smarties? And you really should go. If you want. No pressure. I want to agree vociferously and passionately with Tim Hopkins and his views on love, hate and innocuousness-as-a-bad-thing, but I also want to go home and watch Friends. So Tim, yes, you are right. As always. I would say some things of my own on the subject but you'd all get bored and I'd miss my half-hour of cheesy American comedy. So best just go away. Sinister: Fight The Power! Glastonbury and stuff

FIGHT THE POWER For those of you without MTV UK and Ireland a brief precis of *that* Alt Nation Special: Lots of super 8 style wobbling, black and white bits, all yr fave songs (Century of Fakers, Boy with the Arab Strap (from Bowlie), Modern Rock Song, Dirty Dream, Weathershow, Dog on Wheels, Wicked Not to Care, Lazy Line Painter Jane, Ballad of Ray Suzuki (but not nesessarily in that order, and I think I've missed something)). A rather bizzare TWATTYBUS from Bowlie which seemed to have been "panned and scanned" you know like when they put cinemascope films on telly and everybody looks a bit stttrrr--etc--hhhhed, with crowd shots, but I only recognised Dave Moore, Chelmsford, UK briefly glimpsed in the corner of the screen. Also Weathershow and Ray Suzuki (and a Dr Pepper ad in the break!!). Personal highlight: Struan's face in LLPJ when his t-shirt gets sprayed (tee hee). Personal lowlight: NO BLOODY "UP THEIR OWN ARSES" instead two ~very appropriate~ videos to finish the hour off "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy and "Kelly Watched the Stars" by Air. Now I'm not dissing Chuck and Flav, none of my heroes have appeared on no stamps either, but I'm sure they could have dug out something that fitted the mood a little better. GLASTONBURY Glastonbury was great fun as the sun shone and I didn't see The Corrs. I must second Ms Ross' enthusiasm for Whistler who really are very good in an acoustic, swappy instruments (Jew's Harp ahoy!), lovely female vocals kinda way. Other top moments included Younger Younger 28s (Human League for the next Millenium), Billy Bragg (with Ian McLaghan (sp?) on keyboards), Cornelius (just pure fucking genius, beg, borrow or steal to see them live), Mogwai (including people near me asking other rowdy people to shut up during the quiet bits) and the Manics doing Motown Junk and Motorcycle Emptiness (say no more). Also the Hash Cake Fairies in the Stone Circle on Thursday Morning who were really cute, dressed in pink with little wings (and doing a roaring trade). Not so top moments included Gomez noodling on for hours, Mercury Rev noodling on for hours, Travis making it rain, having to walk about two miles to the New Band tent where there was NO BAR!! One Lady Owner making possibly the most boring noise ever and not talking to the two people at Cornelius with Belle & Sebastian badges on. STUFF Re B&S/Smiths thing, lets hope our current heroes dont split up in two albums time and go on to release infinitely inferior material. Re Helter Skelter, although not necessarily the first "hard rock" song (I don't really want to get into that) is almost certainly the first "pop" song with pure *noise* in it, and all the better for it (and probably the best thing macca has ever done). Re Sleater-Kinney, When I saw them at Bowlie, it took me a while to realise they didn't have a bass player (despite a rather bassy sound), I asked the sound man if it was a DAT, but he said he just turned the bottom end up. Do they sound really tinny through shit PAs??
