Legend has it that Paul McCartney rustled up "Helter Skelter" in response to someone calling the Beatles puffs, so it can't have been the first hard rock song. I beleive that honour goes to Ug, who beat his hands to bloody stumps thrashing out proto-metal riffs on a lump of grnite with a flint plectrum, also inadvertently inventing axe-torching. Has anyone seen that Ringo Starr caveman film? Pure unadulterated celluloid magic..... The Smiths' "Barbarism Begins at Home" and Chic's "I Want Your Love" are identical except for the woofing. I don't know if this is really relevant to the discussion revolving around The Smiths and eighties excess, but it's a handy faclet to drop into conversation down at the indie night. For extra Morrissey points, pronounce Chic "chick", like Simon Groom on Blue Peter. Those of you wishing to check out Steve Cropper without defiling your indie purity are directed towards Big Star's version of "Femme Fatale" on the album "Sister Lovers". Mister Cropper contributes delicate guitar archipelagoes, and in the background you can just make out the sound of Ug being let loose on the pots and pans. However, it's not very representative of either Cropper or Ug. I thought Genevieve and Sarah's comments about Isobel's resemblance to a cold fish were a welcome antidote to all that stuff about her "darling voice", and not to be taken to heart. Mind you, I wouldn't like to be in their shoes if Isobel sets her old dog who is very much loved on them, or her brolley-wielding grandmother. Unless Genevieve unleashes her heaving breasts. Breasts should be as hard as apples and as dangerous as cannons, according to Nelson Mandela. Well done Rachel Playforth, I'm glad to hear all those essays were worth the effort after all. I don't like to blow my own flugel horn, but I think my own encouragement definitely contributed to your success. Brace yourselves. On the subject of lyrical mis-hearings, I'm forever getting in a bit of a muddle with popular tunes from some of the 'finest' 'classic' 'rock' bands this isle has produced in the 90s... -- Once upon a time, not too long ago, we took a day out in Manchester/We all fall down, there's not enough hours in our day/Excruciatingly tedious and flatulent dullards/Drown us in the nearest canal I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah/I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now/Overblown dross for the hard of thinking/If you caved my skull in with a half-brick no jury in the land would convict you She walks in beauty like the night/Discarding her clothes in the plastic flowers/My voice is like silver foil in a mouth full of fillings/Throttle me with my own diaphanous blouse -- Oh dear, it's not exactly Hal David, is it ? Still, it's what the kids like, so I can't really complain Anyone here associate strong coffee with botty bother ? There is that scene in "Henry Fool" of course, which I find reassuring. I always used to favour the leaf over the bean until relatively recently - the switch was an integral part of my ongoing sofistycashun, along with my move to Giddy London and, at the behest of Jasper Buckaroo, the zebra-pattern tattoo on my eyelids. Ooooon ! Can we tempt you to England in September for Ali To Model Panties ? Is it insufficiently P!O!P! (I bet that bloody filter is still on... this post is already too scatological) ? I shall do my best to charm you into spending all your money on plane tickets by revealing a new fact I have learnt about your homeland every time I post... David Toop's new book "Exotica" mentions an easy listening album of Latin-Hawaiian music composed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. Apparently the monarch used to have private audiences with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and had a recording studio in his palace. This album was voiced by heartthrob Thanin Intarathep - 'a kind of Thai Cliff Richard'. One track, a bossanova entitled "Face Up To Problems With A Smile", 'suggests that the King was one of those composers incapable of writing cheerful music'. "Far From Worry", replete with 'double-time piano and soaring strings', paints a picture of the King's palatial retreat in paradise. And "Sounds In The Air", if only it was extended by a few hours, would 'lift [the King] out of his melanchol[y] ... and into the vanguard of international minimalism'. I really want this record. Sinister: a blatant stab at wishful thinking

Well, it's been yonks since I've posted to this beloved and reborn (1000 times over) Sinister list... And I duly apologize to all those kind and loving people that seem to know me, in one form or another. As usual, many changes in one's life seem to change the way you divide up your time. This time - thankfully - all of the changes are for the better. So it is with this cryptic and snobbish message that I greet you with love from these nether lands. I also apologize to those members on the [popjourno] mailing list who have already received this request... The following is geared somewhat to the artistically inclined amongst you (of which I certainly do not count myself). After much hemming and hawing - or whatever one says - I have decided to create a new website yet again. There already is a domain name and a loose concept, but the right ingredients are needed to complete the project. Now, before I even get started on that bit, let me explain that I see myself as a bit of an editor for this thing and not solely as THE contributor, so any input from anyone will be most welcome. It's been a long time coming since I have planned a sort of e-zine. Now, there are plenty of these floating around on the net, and some are good, some not so good. Being the snooty wannabe I am, I would like to create something intelligent, creative, amusing, and lasting. I'm also not saying that I've had my fill of music (indiepop in particular), but sometimes I feel like branching out just a tad more. This new project is aimed to be more visual in approach. Contemporary art, fashion, media, design, film, and so on, and so on... Music will still play a role; however, this role will be limited to an equal amount, on a par with the other elements. The new domain name will be postmodern.co.uk, which gives you an idea of what I mean. Don't go there yet, as it's nowhere near up and running. For this, I am kindly asking those of you inclined towards these areas to please drop me a line at postmodern(a)bigfoot.com. An example of what I'm aiming for is already at the excellent http://www.tangents.co.uk. Some might put this off as pseudo-intellectual twaddle and bullshit, but damn it! - I want to try it. Areas to cover could be exhibitions, portraits of artists and art movements, sociological observations and contexts, fashion trends and non-trends, the evolution/devolution of new media forms, plus of course many, many links. Written pieces will be longer and in-depth, with much insight and knowledge always a plus... Alright, I'm never going to get a reply on this, but it was worth trying! And while we're on the subject, the first time I heard Music Sounds Better With You, I thought the "Love might bring us back together" line was "Last night we slept together". (end quote) My theory was going to be that Natasha doesn't want to think about dirty things, so she didn't let herself hear the real meaning, and subsituted under our spell to replace it. but then in the next paragraph she mentions a mishearing that, well, was rather rude, infact more so than underarm smells. so that shot my theory down nicely. I think Natasha is actually a closet sex maniac, and she didn't want us to figure this out, but she feels guilty and wants to tell people too. So she threw in a diversionary paragraph, hoping no-one would notice. Unfortunately sinister is composed of smut-fiends and other rude things. So there's no surprise for us, Natasha. Sinister: morning thoughts I s'pose

Howdy, Okay, please bear with me, it's 8 a.m. and according to my usual sleeping schedule I should've been a good four hours into dreamland by now, and I'm normally not scheduled to get up in another 6 hours. But I'm sick and couldn't sleep at all so I got up when I heard my parents getting up for work. I think I've got a cold and that's no fun as I'm going to a festival next week and sleeping in tents is a no-no when sick, says mummy. Real life, gave-birth-to-me-mummy, not list-mummy. But at least I'm not at Roskilde which opens today. Did anyone here go to Glastonbury, was it good? What was the Mogwai set like? E-mail me privately if this is not sufficiently this-listy. Anyway, when I got up this morning, a couple of hours ago, I watched this American religious mass-meeting programme that for some reason was on the telly. At first there was a white, ugly business-looking woman singing a gospel tune (sample lyric "Jesus is gonna do a miracle, Jesus is gonna do a miracle, cuz Jesus is a miracleman".) This didn't bother me and I found it amusing, no doubt because of my sleep-depraved state, isn't that how these people recruit new followers, by keeping them up for days and then they're so fucked they'll believe anything? Anyway, then this man in a white suite (what else?) came on stage and starting pushing people around and I felt it was getting a bit disturbing. A girl was brought onto the stage and they talked about how she'd addicted to cocaine, and that she had the scars on her arms to prove it! So that was funny again. But I felt it was time for some of the devils melodies and so I watched MTV for a bit. Okay, I'll ramble about things semi-related to current threads now. Isobel bashers are mean, Isobel is a goddess. When the Gentle Waves album was released I saw a picture of Isobel and, not knowing who she was, I ran around my apartment telling my roommates to have a look "it's the most beautiful girl I have EVER EVER seen!" I said to them, and they all laughed their usual "oh, Erlend and his silly taste in girlies" laugh. When I later showed the picture to this girl that I used to live with she said something along the lines of "who's that farmer's daughter?". Needless to say I have not spoken to any of my so-called friends since and I have in fact been locked up in my room plastering the walls with copies of various Isobel pictures. Oh, someone mentioned the Aphex Twin video, I think it's hilarious and brilliant, as are all of Aphex's videos. Richard James' musical genius far surpasses that of our Stuart. Umm, no flames now, okay? Seriously, though, there's no one quite like the Twin and he writes the best pop songs this side of, err, I don't know, someone else who writes really good pop songs. Morrissey maybe. I mentioned my roommates and I just realised that my friends are actually the smuttiest people in the world. So I should probably come up with some good stories about them to tell you all. One particularly smutty roommate was named KC (Kinky Cunt) by the rest of us, this was after he showed us pictures of himself dressed up in his girlfriend's underwear. Trust me when I say that this is not something you want to see when the pictures are of someone you live with. He also at some point informed us that he doesn't like body hair at all and that he in fact shaves all areas of his body, except his head. I wasn't too happy about knowing that either. His girlfriend by the way is the girl who called Isobel a farmer's daughter in the first paragraph of this post. She, by the way, is the Queen of Smut and I'm thinking about writing a book about her. I could go on + on. Speaking of all this smut I was searching the archives to see if any of my non-music interests had previously been debated and I was shocked that there was not a single mention of the fantastically brilliant Peter Greenaway. So now, if anyone does a search for him in the future, they'll get this. But I suppose Greenaway isn't exactly the sort of film-maker all you twee twee people out there would like. He's kind of Mr. Anti-Twee, I think. Incidentally in his Drowning By Numbers you find the greatest children's character ever and his name is Smut. Is this pure fantasy or would one actually be allowed to name a kid Smut in England? Erlend

hi fairies, well harbourfest is over with! if anyone didn't know (sheeeeeesh sistas) harbourfest is a mass accumulation of fireworks, small children, and yes of course, snow cones. my snow cone duties are anything but simple--shave ice until it's fine, not coarse, then coat it with a syrupy, sweet strawberry (or any berry for that matter) imitation sauce bit, and then serve it to excited youngsters for exorbitant prices. capitalism, yarr! voyeur and smut creator extraordinaire jygsaw dave wrote about me: I suspect that "Iron Jim": is trying to say that he wants vicious up the bum sex with Isobel.
