Oh well, just some pointless ramblings really out of need to whine in front of other people I guess . . . So it happens that tomorrow is my last school exam (phew!) and it happens to be French actually, which I'm definitely not good at. What's more, I'll have to write a composition in French as well. Anyone got any hints for me? As if that's not enough, I have other exams (so as to enrol at a uni here) more difficult and more important obviously, starting on the 1st of July. And the night before the most difficult of those exams (Ancient Greek) Saint Etienne, definitely one of my favourite bands, are playing at a club here. Out of 365 nights it had to be this one! Tough luck. Such things only happen to me (and to Megan too apparently). Anyway, could some of the people that saw St. E in the US tell what time approximately they were on, so that I might be able to see them after all (now that would be lovely). I'm worried that if I don't go I'll do badly at the exam and then regret not having gone to the gig but if I do go to the gig that I'll fuck it up again and then blame it on St. E. It's a vicious circle. Ian, perhaps you could help me out by threatening Sarah Cracknell's life to force her change the date. What do you say? On a happier note, I'm sooooo looking forward to the Belle and Sebastian video special on Alternative Nation. I've watched most of their videos before but I never thought of taping them, which I'll definitely do on the 29th. I found this on NME's website. It's not exactly got a huge bearing on the band, but it might interest someone... THANK YOU BELLE Stuart Murdoch has directed the video for the new V-Twin single 'Thank You Baby'. Filming work was completed yesterday (Thursday) on the video which was widely rumoured to be 'bawdy' and to feature 'girls'. When quizzed on what the video was about V-Twin's manager, Neil Robertson said: "I can't tell you - because I don't know. And I'm in it. It's just various shit. We don't want to make too much of Stuart doing it. It's just that he's the only person we know who'll do it for nothing." "It does feature girls. But the bawdiness is all off camera," he revealed. The sect was originally called the Shaking Quakers, or "The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing," and they were persecuted in England. Ann moved to the US in the 1770's and started a Shaker colony outside Albany, NY, claiming to be Christ reincarnated. She was beaten and imprisoned here too. The Shakers were communistic and celibate, and did quite well for awhile -- in the early 1800's they had about 20 colonies here. By the 1960's there were only two communities left, one in New Hampshire and one in Maine, and then yes, there was that one last (or maybe two?) woman left living in one of them... very sweet and sad. The Shakers believed in simplicity and utilitarianism... the houses and furnishings they made are beautiful -- really nice simple lines and beautiful wood. Wonderful split wood round boxes. Actually, at least one of the communes has now been turned into an artists' retreat where artists of various sorts go to get away and create -- and there is a new interest in Shaker lifestyle -- probably without the celibacy. Ok, yeah, I've always liked Shakers.... sorry. "tis a gift to be simple...." Celibacy is a different matter altogether, albeit pretty simple. Oh and... about the Rolling Stone review of the Gentle Waves -- I think the reviewer was remembering another review. Being bored here at work on a slow Friday, I decided to give www.suck.com a visit (it's not a porn site for those not in the know). Piqued by the curious title of today's article, "How to Judge a Man by His CD Collection," I decide to give it a read... Interestingly enough, the article has a list of some CDs and what to expect of the man you are dating if you find that particular CD in his collection. Anyway (yes, I'm going somewhere with this), the second CD listed is B&S's very own TBWTAS and the text for it follows (and this is obviously directed to the woman who finds said CD): Belle & Sebastian The Boy with the Arab Strap Although the prospect of motherhood may appeal to you, you would probably prefer that your child be an infant and not a grown man who acts like one. Should you discover this CD in his collection, you'd be well advised to keep all your maternal instincts in check; otherwise you'll be spending the night coddling, mollifying, and sympathizing instead of cuddling, making out, and screwing. After a few seemingly endless hours of his incessant whining and irrational ranting, you'll wonder whether you shouldn't be charging him $75 an hour for any future dates. If it turns out that he's a professional music critic (and if he owns this CD he almost certainly is), odds are that he's a bed-wetter and probably allergic to sex. What's funny (not ha-ha funny) is this explanation wasn't (ha-ha) funny to me, but the other ones were (ok, not side-splittingly, uproariously, comedy of the summer-no-the-decade-no-the-century-no-the-millenium funny, but ha <cough> funny). hmm...... >Rolling Stone reviewed the Gentle waves album and praised isobel's songwriting ability, saying that it wasn't as mean as Stuart's. come again? i'd agree that's the wrong tack to take, i dont' think stuart is mean at all, his songs all have an exceedingly gentle heart, yet courage enough to tell like it is. they only said she wasn't as mean, cos she is relatively more pink and fluffy. but i must admit, at the risk of annoying any more of the anti-bel contingent, she has a gift for churning out the most un-ironic pop fluff i've heard for a while, and in my book that is a good thing. i'm so sick of irony right now, it's daily that i have the urge to throw myself on a sword harikari style, to make up for my guilty participation in the sub-conscious, culturally saturating cult of irony. i'm probalby being ironic right now, ironically enough. isn't it ironic? *KILL ME NOW* in any case, at least rolling snork said something nice about something nice, but otherwise they are a bunch of buffoons and their rag belongs on the bottom of my birdcage. ...or at least, so said charles dickens in the days before pre cast concrete [ in "A Tale of 2 cities" to be exact], but i'm sure thats enough literary allusions for one day. Anyhoo, greetings P!O!P!picnicers! [with apologies to Alan *fluff* Freeman and all non uk listees who may not have a clue what i'm alluding to]. however, is it too late for me to add my tuppenneys worth on the subject of *the Smiffs*? yes, oh well, here goes anyway, i'm goijng to ignore you. I too agree that all inter band comparisons are inherently flawed, though not necessarily inherently wrong as sometimes its the only way to find any kind of handle for the purposes of interpretation, which is, as has been said before all rather subjective, and often unhelpful. But regarding specifically the aforementioned b+s/Smiffs contrast. i don't really think that this is altogether fair, as although both *the Smiths* and b+s touch on the same circumference from time to time they travell[ed], on rather different tangents to this circumference and will thus end up at differing points [this metaphor is quietly dying so i shall bury it here before it creates trouble]. In any case they are two different bands with different approaches and to be quite fair non congruent fan bases, though there is obviously some overlap, as in the bands themselves. Unfortunately, the Smiths, as with some of their contempories attract the kind of dogma and intransigense more generally associated with the likes of o*!"£$s and possibly the Stone Roses, i.e. "This music is great [insert expleitive of choice for emphasis], and anything which isn't produced by band/group/individual X is therefore [insert expleitive/insult of chioce here]". This also goes for anything new or different which is perhaps why Pete Waterman had so much trouble with the Brits. The opposite view [that is kissing the ass of NMEs latest darling], i find equally objectionable, though nothing i say will change the view of either side. VIVA CHOICE. This arguement has rather lost its way, though i feel that Sir Cliff [Richard, not Jones], might well agree.
