Hello to everyone... This is my first post to the list and I will say that I am very happy to be a part of it. Although I was only introduced about 4 months ago, It would be an understatement to say that the music of Belle and Sebastian has changed my life for the better. I can now put on a CD that gracefully unleashes my emotions, puts my soul at peace, and in general makes me glad to be alive. I can only hope that B&S will tour again soon so that I can see some of this magic that I've been listening to. That brings me to my next thought: Who on this list trades Belle and Sebastian shows? I have only accumulated a few, but I want to find as many as I can, and as much as I am able to, I want to share them with the list. For my first offer, I will take the first five people to respond to this post. I will offer you the 10/7/98 Botanique, Brussels Belgium show if you will send me a blank tape and the adequate return postage to get it back to you. Let me make it clear that my tapes are not for sale, and if you have any plans to sell them, please do not respond (Remember that karma will indeed kick you in the ass.) I am only interested in trading for shows I do not have and spinning blanks for those that haven't had the fortune of owning any live Belle and Sebastian. If you made the cut, I will respond to you, and if not, I won't. This is not to be mean, but when I do these offers I usually get a ton of replies and I simply do not have the time to respond to each and every one of them. Please do not take this personally. I would also like to know if anyone can tell me when and where the first show B&S ever played was and if any tapes circulate of it. I hope to hear from some of you on my offer. I also hope to be able to help more and more of you in the future. Sinister: Pachel-Belle and Sebastian

Excuse the cheesy subject line, it was sorta a spontaneous brainstorm that probably came back when I was in high school and did those academic quiz competitions where they would have answers to a category of question by stringing two names together. Like "The second President of the United States and a comedic actor that used to be on Saturday Night Live" To which you would answer John Adamsandler. Anyway my point being, while listening to Get Me Away from here, I'm dying and We rule the school I noticed some remarkable similarities between these songs and the Pachelbel Canon. So to assuage my curiosity and considering I have just been let out of the nursery recently (in fact this is my first post) I looked back in the archive and found that although We Rule the School has been discussed before to the point of naming it a variation on the Canon, I didn't find that there has ever been any corellation on this list between Get me away from here... and the Canon. The melody of Stuart's voice in that song sounds very close to the fast part in the Pachelbel Canon, the one with all the sixteenth and 32nd notes if you've ever seen the violin part to Canon. Anybody else agree or am I just hearing things? Anyway this being my first post and all just a little introduction--I'm a 19 year old student from Maryland and I go to University of Maryland. I was introduced to the lovely Belle and Sebastian just this past June by a friend of mine who just happens to be a member of this list, Steve C. The first album I heard was TBWTAS and my fave song to this day is still the first one I ever hear, It could have been a brilliant career. The closest I've come to seeing B & S live in any part or form is seeing Looper in DC about month ago. I also had the privilege of meeting several people on the list at that show which persuaded me to join the list as they were a very nice bunch of people. A Little comment about that show although it is a month later, hey I just got my voice: I have to admit I just went to that show to see the bassist from B & S but I really liked the distinct sound of Looper and how their images on the screen so perfectly meshed with their sound and I have become hooked on Looper ever since then as well (a sidenote to a sidenote-that DJ that played before Looper in DC was about the worst act I have ever seen especially since he appeared to think he was performing in a strip club and he felt a need to fondle some girl that was in the front row that couldn't have been more than 16, by the way she's on this list I say Bravo! you handled what must have been a really uncomfortable situation with some how grace and dignity, if I was a girl and some sweaty random guy clad only in his underwear pulled me up on stage and started groping me I would have kneed him in the nuts.) Well sorry if I started to ramble on their, I tend to do that even discounting the whole first post thing. Oh and another thing, can anybody tell me why it seems to be a foregone conclusion on this list that IYFS is B & S's best LP? I mean I agree that it flows very well but to me TBWTAS just has so much more variety and innovation musicly. Just a sinister newbie's curiosity. Omigod! Erica O'Hara has just confessed to nearly 700 active people her past obsession with Michael Hutchence.I had a friend at school who suffered the same disease and none could work out what was failing at her nervous system. I watched just the end of the programme, so most of the juicy bits had already been shown, including the black lacy shirts collections in Imelda Marcos' style.Only how old Paula Yates looks lately really impressed me.How old is she, anyway? Maybe she looks incredingbly young for her age and I just got all wrong.But it is curious someone posted to the list wondering about Jeff Buckley's death and then we have this program on more stars dying in mysterious circumstances.I hope it is not the starting of a series and Channel 4 will explain to us how Linda Mc Cartney in fact was killed by dioxines in her own veggie products range. But there is some exciting symmetry in all this : I fancied Jeff Buckley and I would still fancy him if he were alive.Symmetry is my latest obsession in my Physics-side.Apparently cosmetics and cosmology both come from the same Greek root 'cosmos' meaning symmetry.So all beauty in some face and the beauty of skies comes from the same source...beautiful itself. That's the kind of lyrics intelligent pop songs should display.Nothing about bullied at school, but trying to work out something minimally interesting and touching with a sciencey bit , would be amazing.It is terrible to have this science -touched personality.Something totally MrHydean, like Alistair's tendency to wallets and miscarried behaviours in Mr Trousers. Actually trollopinpaisley does have a certain ring to it. It comes from the little bell it has on the end of it's hat, much like Noddy. Ding a ling! Following on from Robin's excellent idea for a sitcom (Robin, I think the main characters should be called Mr and Mrs Stupid Seventies Fad), I shall venture one of my own. It's called Nobby's Tiles, and stars myopic toothless ex-footballer Nobby Stiles, who has crazy adventures every week with Martin Peters and George Cohen, mainly revolving around the resemblance of Nobby to both Hans Moleman from the Simpsons and Mr Magoo. To keep the action going, they are continually visited by the ghosts of Sir Alf Ramsey and Bobby Moore, who chip in with their hilarious catch phrases "the Germans are more tired than you are" and "I never nicked nuffink". The title comes from the fact that Nobby is perpetually trying to put up some tiles in his bathroom, but they keep falling down. The tiles of course are representative of his love life, which never quite works out, but as the series will be shown on ITV none of the viewers will be intelligent enough to realise this. Have I written enough yet? Probably. I'm far too boring for my own good, you know. As they say in Russia, Leningrad. Have I got that right? i don't know what has been wrong with my brain lately. its playing tricks. my own mind is playing mind games with me. life could be better, it could be worse. i may be going on a wild adventure in the next couple of months. i think i am going to go to Fiji... for 2-3 weeks... to build houses for single mothers with the Global Village program. i need the challenge, i need to feel like i'm doing something to help people besides myself. but when i come back, i will have no $$ and no job. its a toss-up. there is this guy that i used to like so much. more than i should have. he would do this emotional power-wielding thing, run linguistic circles around me. i know that he didn't like me, at least not *that* way. and the truth of the matter is, the more i got to know him, the less i liked. but i feel guilt about that. i feel like i should have been rendered speechless and jello-legged by his wit and sophistication. and the amounts of money he would spend on me. but in the end, i wasn't. when i first met him i thought he was nice enough, cool to talk to, hip-style, and seemed genuinely interested in what i had to say. but as much as he would throw the word "friendship" around, we never got there. he would never talk, disclose, reciprocate...just listen. it started to scare me. i don't know why he didn't trust me. then the bizarre comments started, things i would think about for days afterward, trying to decipher. i got bad vibes, i thought about him too much! i think we realized that we didn't actually LIKE each other around the same time, and now.. well. the last time i saw him his behavior left a lot to be desired. it makes me so SAD!! i just want to cry, i have no idea why. i used to want to just take his hand. but he was so...cold. i'm sure it seems silly to everyone, including you. but at one point i liked him SO much, and then... its not even worth the time and energy i put into thinking about it, or writing this. it just makes me feel so... sad. i guess its good in a way, that i met him and all. it made me realize what i really want, and what i will do or put up with for other people...and it ain't much. call me a bitch! see if i care!! like Archel, i'm embracing my inner bitch. she has better judgement than i do. ;) this is called closure, or so i've heard. for anyone who's gotten this far... go out and play!! its nice outside! spending all the rent on my decline, christa +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". At risk of boring everyone AGAIN, if any Glasgow types are V-Twinning tonight, I'll be in Nice'n'Sleazy's at 9.30-ish with the lovely, if slightly mad, Calumn and maybe some other people. Come along, due to the inclement weather the infamous duffle coat may be making its first outing of the summer. Carsmile Steve fully expected me to be wearing it at the London picnic, despite it being the hottest weekend ever in the history of the world (or something). Amphetameanies too on Saturday. Mail me personally if you want to meet up somewhere. People who wrote me on my Chickmail account - I keep forgetting to check it which is why I haven't written to you yet :) And Nick and Martin C and other people I haven't written to for ages, I do have a good excuse, I just haven't thought of it yet. Erm, the dog ate my computer. I did do it, I just forgot to bring it in with me. Whatever. I never got to use these excuses as a child, as at a boarding school, it's a bit tricky to leave things at home... I want to nick Lesley Jo's email address, as I feel trollopinpaisley has a certain ring to it. Though I'm not a trollop at all. Despite what Alasdair is probably going to reply to this (I heard it all on the phone last night). It's not true, whatever he says. Unless it's nice, in which case it probably still isn't true, but you can believe it if you want. I have just arsed up an exam big style, and I have to go back to work and I don't want to, I just want to sleep and then wake up and go out and not care about how I've just wasted the last year of my life doing an ultimately useless course, though I suppose the free internet access and meeting my boyfriend are some sort of compensation. I don't have a problem with "intelligent" music, what I *do* have a problem with is people who don't like "dumb" music. Like Steps, or Wham!, or Offspring. They may say nothing to me about my life, but neither does Sunset Beach and I like that too. But selectively, I mean, just because I like Wham! doesn;t mean I like Bros, liking Steps doesn;t mean I have to like the Vengaboys etc etc. I still have discretion, it's just not based on what anyone else thinks. Not that any of you do that of course, but I completely fail to see how people can't enjoy a bit of brainless cheesy fluff every now and again. I also fail to see how people can love any band more than Belle and Sebastian, but hey, each to their own. Which reminds me, massive massive respect to the bloke ages ago that said Nick Drake was shit and all his songs sounded the same. I hope you meant that. I may not agree with you, but it's good that people on here *aren't* all listening to the same stuff, or we'd become the twee massive that some people were accusing us of not so long ago. And then I'd start moaning again. Just ignore me, I've been up half the night studying. Now I have to go and hide my Invernessian face in my work, as the office will be full of disgruntled St Mirren fans, who the snappily-monikered Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC knocked out of the League Cup last night.
