I for one am thankful that I don't have to sift through a bunch of Solex and Guided By Voices just to hear an alternate version of a B&S song (and I'm sure I'd buy it if it had one, too). Hm, you know you're in a rough patch when the biggest bit of B&S news is that they aren't on a compilation. Fascinating. In other news the 'Is Johnny Marr joining Oasis?' thread seems indeed not indigenous to our list, or even to related lists, such as the Oasis list. In fact a brief discussion has already begun on the Factory list. Apparently there is something cited which said he actually is joining, not like what I'd previously read, that he was thinking about it, and then that he was never actually thinking about it, although it was thought otherwise. If you're wondering at the connection, recall that J'en ai marre was in Electronic w/Bernard Sumner, and that they were initially on Factory. Incidentally, I thought Electronic's new album is absolute crap. I hope the new New Order album is better... Hm...it's my last day at work. I'm going to be relieved to go back to the student life. The languid days of having lots of stress about doing small amounts of things, but spending most of your time doing other things. For me that mostly means working at my radio station, watching Anime, playing video games, or spending lots of time on the web. Summer is coming to a close, and I for one am ever so glad. Not that this summer hasn't had its high points, but I'm glad that Fall is about to begin, because summer's subtitle should be 'the sweaty, sticky season' and Fall's should be 'the pleasant cool breeze and jackets season.' Since we're mostly discussing other things and since I've already posted some 'genuine' B&S content, I would like you all to note that I finally found the new Brian album, and it is fiendishly good. Quite dancey, unlike the first, but as I said excellent. Yours truly will also be looking forward greatly to next week's release of a brand new Trembling Blue Stars 7". Sinister: Richmal Compton Wrenched My Stonk-On

Of course I know Richmal Compton didn't do "Watership Down". It was Roman Polanski. Richmal Compton is where it was filmed. All the roadies were Wombles. I bought "Todgermilk" on CD in my local hypermarket. What can I say that hasn't been said already? Mine's on the Delabel label. Howie B is Mad Dog's Delabel labelmate. His album was there too. It attracted me because of the pretty colours. But I didn't buy it. Perhaps I should have. At least I haven't heard it before. You're all very naughty, because you all went on about how you can hear loads of things on the "Tigermilk" CD that you couldn't hear on vinyl, so I'd got myself all psyched up for the sound of some kind of woodland creatures orchestra adding delicate filigrees of squirrel-like frothiness, not a bit of poxy tambourine shaking. I must confess that I side with the "Electronic Rennaisance is shit!" brigade. I've spent the last two or three years thinking my tape was knackered, but it wasn't. Trauma: Thanks to David "Please sir, I want some" Moore, I have now seen Daltrey on "The Bill". I couldn't get the sound to work, so I had to lip read. Nevertheless, Daltrey's magnificence shone through. He seemed to be under a lot of stress, it brought home to me the problems of many former rock stars living on Britain's council estates surrounded by the pressures of drugs and sarcastic policemen, not to mention coppers' narks. I'm not very good at lip reading, but I'm sure Roger said "them lot" at one point, which suggests that his character had been lured into the National Front against his will. Daltrey killed himself at the end, which really shook me up, just like it did the young policeman who witnessed it. I'm not sure, but I think the police were partly to blame, as well as the lack of social services. A bit sad really. No one knows what it's like to be the sad man, to be the bad man, behind blue eyes. To cheer us all up, let's have a joke: Q: What do you call it when your wife gets off with a member of the 70s WHO? A: a-daltrey! I watched the film "Crooklyn" on the telly last night. It's great, it features all our favourite songs on the soundtrack, and gives some of them a new lease of life, notably "Ooh Child", which I never really liked much before, but now I do. If Spike Lee's 70s WHO tribute is half as good as this, I can't wait. I thought Genevieve had been brain drained to Detroit. I must have missed something. Thanks to Kevan for processing my request. Sinister: Cyprus meetup

i'm back, and even more tedious and longwinded and dull than ever before... wow, my inbox was rather full - a week's sinister is quite a bit. but when you get stories as lovely as erica's bikini tale it's more than worth it... 'oh lucky dog, to chew the top of erica', as shakespeare almost said ;) so, here's a little bit about the first ever cyprus sinister meetup. there were supposed to be three people attending - me, natasha and alex runchman recently of this parish, but he never came to the phone, he was always in the bath, and so nat and i had to manage on our own. the b&s songs that seemed to turn up most frequently were dylan in the movies and rhoda. there was no tigermilking, though - just the 'rock garden' in ayia napa, with rage against the machine, guns 'n roses and metallica (which i sung along to word for word) and offspring (where nat did the honours), and hundreds of REALLY shitty clubs and bars full of drunken english and scandinavian pricks. THE FACE calls it 'the new ibiza' and put it at the top of the 'coolness barometer'. fucking right - well done, people at THE FACE (YEAH, CAPITALISE - THEN MAYBE PEOPLE WILL THINK WE'RE HIP). you obviously know a lot and you're not just sad little people trying to be trendy and cool and arty but just being wankers. oh no. and your target audience can afford chanel couture. oh yes. grr... silly magazine... um, it was a really great holiday. i haven't got much of a tan, and the only time i really went out in the far-too-hot sun to try to get one was on the last morning. i'll let lovely natasha stop lurking and talk about the rest of the time if she wants - i'll just do the last day. well, we woke up around eight thirty, and i made a huge coffee and chocolate and vanilla icecream smoothie, and drank it down rather quickly. then i had a shower while nat made breakfast, and we went out into the sun for me to dry off. shy was finding it hot, and so i should have cottoned on that MAYBE i should pay some attention to those nagging doubts and that slight burning feeling, but no. i went inside again, and the airconditioning was on and it was cold, and my gut went all a-quivering. so i rushed to the loo, and after having been careful not to fart or burp all week so as not to appall natasha i proceeded to make explosive noises from both ends of my body... in the end, i was having severe difficulty moving, and i was having to rush to the loo every three minutes while i packed my bag. i tried to throw up in the vain hope that it'd make me feel better, but no. my attempt at 'pulling the trigger' just succeeded in making me issue the loudest belch i've ever made. i would have been proud if i hadn't felt so shit. anyway, after about four litres of water i got to the airport, and the only loo there was through this REALLY greasy pizzeria, and so every time i needed to get rid of some of the water i had drunk i had to look at all this superdisgusting food... not good. and then (as always with public loos, i find) there was always the leftover from someone else all over the seat/ floor/ walls. lovely. anyway, eventually i said goodbye to my fave listcrush (ok martin, i remember that beer - i'm off to vote for you... as soon as you send us all a poem...) and got into departures. while queueing for the gate, they changed the time from 16:45 to 21:45. this is bad at anytime - when ill and broke and wanting to die, it's even worse. and 'the lads' from ayia napa were there, making horrible noise and brandishing their kebabs under my nose and... i only just made it to the loo to retch and blurgh... then, eventually on the plane, i was in the middle of two young families. aren't babies lovely - especially when they scream non-stop for five hours... and they didn't have my vegi meal, and after emptying my gut so successfully earlier i was desperate for food, and so i ate the armpit flavoured ghoulash of random beast (donkey? rat? who knows...) and promptly threw it all up again. well done me. anyway, that was about it. after that i listened to GYBE! very loud (that man doing the long speech about the government and guns is amazing... wow) started to feel a bit better (well enough for sinister chat when i got back), and now my tummy is fasting but fine. i have to fly again today though... aberdeen-ish beckons. are there any sinisteroonies in ballater? or nearby? aren't b&s's management called 'banchory' or something? any connection? if so, mail me, and if i can get to a computer to check my mail i'd like to maybe meet up for a pint or two. which reminds me - the night before my bathroom fireworks was the first night for as long as i can remember without alcohol... is there a connection? but it was also the first night for ages where i ate unhealthy food... maybe that was it. anyway, i'm sorry i missed tigermilking, and i thought maybe we should have a picnic at the start of september to celebrate austrian dogs. and maybe erica could make a new bikini top out of cornish pasties or something ;) oh, tim - i was in the video for the song with the lyrics 'blessed truly are the blind/ the meek and kind'. and i looked like a girl, with my long locks. and i couldn't act for shit. little change there then... i think i've got the tape somewhere, so if i can find it i'll lend it to you. anyway, off for another week :( i've missed you all - keep my inbox pumping... love Marcus XXX ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Attention E.A.: You know I love you and want to marry you! No one here understands our lust disguised as flaming sarchasm! Did you all really think I was judging Miss Hotty-stedter? If you all must know, I made my first Sinister contact by voice last night on the phone, we talked all night, and now I am playing hooky from work in order to write this (and sleep). Oh, and hey gossip-people, we are meeting in person tonight! Another first! She is invited over for wine and polite conversation. Unlike our tempestuous relationship here on the list. It's our alter-egos. I assure you the emails we send daily and the phone calls are ripe with hearts and flowers and kittens and pretty things that make my pink bits tingly! =P Consider my little flame to E.A. a "wedgie" or "pantsing" or "India rug burn" or "wet willie" to a friend. Some people say hello differently, that's all. I guess I should have clarified to my lovely sinisters that E.A. and I have been carrying on since BEFORE she got her voice. So Honey, if your reading, I'm being a good ladd, I am, honest. I love everyone on the sinister list. Well, except that cheap slut, E.A. Hottstedter! **KIDDING** Blame yesterday on the beer i was drinking from noon until noon again, and the state I was in. Hmm..let me see. Yes I finally bought it, cuz I had a chance. I went to Tower records on Queen St., and a sympathetic record store worker looked hi and low for the 2 copies he said were in stock. He came back after 1/2hour and said "sorry...someone must've stolen them." Most of the time, I'm all for shoplifters of the world uniting and taking over, but in this case, it was my Tigermilk gone missing. So to the two listees (I know you are here!) who stole the last 2 copies, I want you to turn yourselves in to the local authorities, and recieve punishment. *I* may flame a friend on the list and get lamb-basted, but at least I'm not a fucking thief, hey?!?! It was probably that cheap slut E.A. Hottstedter. **KIDDING AGAIN** So I hope I've clarrified things to you all regarding the wonderful E.A. (she's just a baby). Sinister: music against brain degeneration

hi, this is my first time so please be gentle. i was waiting till the time was right and i felt like i had something to say. i went to see the flaming lips the other night in NYC (was anyone there?) and seeing how some listees like them, i think i should tell you it was a very good show. they had a really cool visual thing going on (i.e. they used a tape from when they played david letterman to introduce themselves and had cameras showing the band at various spots onstage (which helped b/c i was standing behind a tall kid with a big head) they even passed out walkmans at the show so you could tune into the show in stereo on the radio (in case you happened to be in a bad spot or use the toilet). it was kinda like you do at a drive-in movie theatre. all this was very interesting because everyonce in a while they would pan the sound from left to right which was really neat-o in the headphones . im rambling now but it was really fun. if you haven't done so already get the new flaming lips album, i like it. who knows you might too. they call their tour music against brain damage and promote it saying their music might make you smart if you want it to. Hello darkness my old friends. I've come to post to you again I know, I know. You all hungrily sign on to your e-mail accounts and greedily go down the list of your 50 something messages in search of your favorite listee's post. Eagerly you click on that link to send you to a letter full of meaning, full of wit, full of fun and cheer. Well, too bad - just my tripe for now.... But thats ok since I send you cheery greetings from Northern Calipornia! Now, I know what you're thinking. As you scratch your head, you're wondering, "Why, Laura Llew, California isn't on the way from Utah to North Carolina. Did they set you facing the wrong direction after they wound up the metal knob in your back?" Don't fret kiddies. My plans for a wondrous cross country road trip fell again and so I am ended up at relatives house in Fairfield until I can get a flight back to the promise land (September 8th). The 'Find Llew a Way Home' debacle of '99 has certainly proved to be interesting. Then again it should surprised anyone. I mean, my plans to prove that North Dakota really doesn't exist but it is a falsehood perpetuated by the government to serve their evil purpose were thwarted once again. Coincidence? Ohhhhh, I think not. At least I'm no longer living with my roomies. I loved them dearly but it was akin to living with a plague of locusts. Though, locusts are most likely cleaner. The dreamy Alasdair said, "yada yada yada." Ok, so I stopped listening to the actual words. Everyone (well besides Timmy Hopkins) knows that you don't actually listen to Al's words just to his dream accent for which the women swoon. The other day, my sister told me that she was moving to Scotland and marrying the first guy that came along who had that accent which seems to have that wicked witch of the west (definitely not of the south) melting effect. She doesn't care if he's old, balding, toothless, or skinny (don't ask me those are the exact words she used) - so Xavier it seems as if you do have a chance! ahaha On the road trip out here to Cali, I got the opportunity to introduce my brother to both IYFS and BWTAS (which sound like military abbreviations). Of course, this was after suffering through his requests of something catchy like Third Eye Blind or the such. I played him Billy Joel, The Beautiful South and Fountains of Wayne - slowly but surely easing him out of the stagnated pool of radio play. While he was listening to b&s I thought I saw him go through a change of heart. He seemed to be happily pondering his own thoughts while listening to the music. I was sure that he had fallen in love with them and was being taken to whole new worlds of thought and enjoyment. Then he turns to me and says, "What did the dog say to the other dog as he lifted his hind leg." I gullibly answered, "What?" To which he replied, "From a scale of 1 to 10, you're an 8." I'll pause for a second to let the stupidity of the joke sink in I'm sure my face was a mask of pure horror and disgust. Here I thought he was being seriously effected by my selection of pure ear candy. Instead, some muse that I have never heard of nor am in interesting of ever meeting is inspiring him. In retrospect, I believe that is was just the fact that we had been on the road for so long because then he started to mindlessly babble about the evil of sweater girl (a girl that we nicknamed so because of her tendency to wear a sweater around her shoulders. He thought she was bearing false witness since she had the sweater but had no intentions of wearing it. Plus, the past few times he had seen her there had been no sweater. He seemed quite perturbed by this whole situation.) Yes, I'm blaming the heat. If you're travelling through Utah, Nevada, and California during the summer may I suggest that you have ac in your car that actually works. A novel idea I know. ...I just liked how that looked (inane) here are my musings for today: IRC IRC was developed by a guy called Jarkko (Oikarinen) in 1988. B&S I had an informal lunch interview for that new job (fingers crossed). We started talking about music and I, of course, brought up B&S. I couldn't believe it but he'd heard of the kids' show...he talked about the little boy and the big dog...but he'd never heard of the band??!! He even did little French chatty sounds. Got a good laugh out of that one *scratching my head* AL STEWART "Year of the Cat" is a staple in Canadian department stores and malls, and not just the muzak version. I unfortunately have not heard any of his other songs. When I was 16&17 I worked as a cashier at a fruit market. They had this Chum-Seeberg reel of 80s light adult alternative music...heard lots of Joe Jackson, Go West, Elvis Costello, Erasure, and Al Stewart. The only thing that ruined it was at Christmas, I had to endure Wings(?) "Busy Having a Wonderful...aaaghhh. Now I've got you all CRAZY!!! JPSARTRE JPS said that "Hell is other people." Egads!- especially when they live in your head! J I know you are all dying to know *cough* Jason and I met up last night. It was my turn to be the rambling idiot...he listened to me as I downed glasses of wine...he did some fine impressions of annoying popular singers...truly gifted...and I got to hear 'Tigermilk' *sigh* :) TRATTORIA Check out //trattoria.eccosys.co.jp I'm not into Cornelius but I love Trattoria's album art.
