Sinister: death, the smiths, hugh grant and b&s

good afternoon, this morning i received a small parcel. when you shake it, it ticks. it is marked "from s. with love". i have not opened it yet. last night, hugh grant tried to break into my house. fortunately, i managed to frighten him off by hiding behind the rubbish bin and making a noise like a rotweiler. he vanished, but i could hear a whispering through my letterbox for some time afterwards. Just to put everyone's minds at rest, Waldorf and Steiner were the two old bastards that sat in the balcony during the muppet show. Or something like that. Well, at least you can count on me to roll out the crap gags when most needed. To be quite honest, all this talk of new albums being recorded soon is getting me all excited. And yes, for once, smutmongerers, I *do* mean in that way. I haven't even finished repeatedly listening to Tigermilk yet. God only knows what I'm going to do if another classy B&S offering hits the shelves. I think I may explode. Good job my house hasn't got carpets yet, then. I'd have terrible trouble getting my insides out of axminster with Vanish stain remover. Wonder what colour they're going to use for the cover of this one then. Options are becoming quite limited now that orange, green, red, pink, yellow, white and breasts have already been used. My advice would be blue. Or more breasts. Well, I'd love to stay here and chat forever, don't you know, but my boss has just handed me a grindstone with the words "Affix firmly to nose" written on it. Bugger. hello everybody ...be warned this is a very indulgant post... -------------------------- genius tv moment -------------------------- was that really funky seb ...what a fantastic performance....not many people get to throw up on tv ...damn fine job ...expect to see funky seb collect his award at the Bafta's next year ...or would that be the Barfta's ... ------------------------- the smiths ------------------------- i think sometimes people analyse music too much ...i couldn't possibly choose my favourite smiths album ...i like all of them for different reasons ...i bought all of the smiths albums as they came out so i never had that problem of deciding which one to buy first... ------------------------------------- how i influenced the verve ------------------------------------- a few years ago ...myself and the band i'm in shared a studio complex with the verve ...they had a massive room that they used as a rehearsal room ...we had a small cupboard like space that was our studio ...anyway i got to hear them rehearse " urban hymns " a good year before it came out ...anyway we got on ok with them ashcroft was a bit moody ...but with him being a popstar thats ok ...the rest of them were friendly ...anyway i always get asked the question " what does your band sound like " well i'll tell you what we sound like ...all you need is a copy of the verves " lucky man " there is a track called MSG on it ...that sounds like my band ...we even tested it out on a few people that are familiar with our sound ...this track sounds nothing like the verve.. an interesting coincidence ...our album was released on the same day as the verve's urban hymns ...they sold about 2 million ...& we sold about 2000 ...yet they chose to steal from us.if anybody is interested & i'm sure your not my band is called Elixir. ====================== portishead stole my bass line ====================== again ...another true story...when our album was released we got reviewed in a swedish dance magazine ...the guest reviewers were portishead ...we managed to get it translated & it wasn't so bad ...they said it was one of the more interesting things to be going on in England at the moment ...but they said we could do with some vocals...( most of our stuff is instrumental ) ...anyway on our album we have a track called " Deimos "...& i play a very sublime bassline consisting of 3 notes ...you want to know what this sounds like well just play portisheads " only you " its the exact same bassline...& they can't claim to never having heard of us or our album because they reviewed it... ++++++++++++++ B&S content .... ++++++++++++++ absolutely none ...except that like all of you on this list ...i love B&S ...the few people that i have met have been friendly beyond belief...& i'm going to make a huge effort to attend forthcoming sinister events ... hope all of you have a fantastic weekend...& i'll say goodbye...but before i go i bought the Whistler album yesterday ...its a beautiful album...i also tracked down the Kathryn Williams album " dog leap stairs " & thats great too...see i have got something to say... take care everyone... richard.p. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: ex-girlfriends and alcohol don't match

Well off to Neverland I go. Well not really. Chums, is there anything more fun than drinking 5 beers with your ex-girlfriend on a thursday-evening at your place and listen to her talk about her ex-boyfriend (that not being me, but this other guy she dated for about a year after we broke up). And listening to her telling me about the AMAZING sex she had with a 27-year old screenwriter during summer, when she tried up the bum- sex for the first time ("I kinda liked it", she said). And listening to her tell the story about this swedish guy who she picked up from this bar and who gave her the most pleasent oral sex she had ever recieved? Oh for €€€s sake, that wasn't fun at all. Well, she stayed over night and we slept on the same bed (a bit like the good ol' times) and she woke me up twice when i felt her hand on my bottom (both times she woke up too and apologized, she thought I was this other guy... this is getting REALLY complicated now, isn't it?) and in the morning she changed her shirt in front of me and I saw her bra. That girl is one thing I never can shake off my head. Even though I'd like to. BADLY. But on to the alcohol now. Last friday I was supposed to interview this band called Duplo! for Sue- magazine. Ok, so they play their gig and after that I get my recorder and sit down to the table with two of them (the drummer wanted to get drunk so he wasn't there). I know the bassist, a nice lad. Well, I did the interview. Then, the next day, I tried to listen to it. Ok, I was very, very drunk during the interview. What I didn't understand then was that I spoke about 80 per cent of the time. And it's hard enough to listen to your own voice, but I was stuttering and unvcabable of finding words and shitarsed and telling them funny jokes (funny then, NOT now)... And their singer is having so much fun with me, basicly (dirty word now) telling me to fuck off with my stupid blabbering. So there. My career in musicjournalism got a BAAAAAAAAAAD start. Sinister: National B&S Content Day

What is Track and Field? Who does Bus Stop? Just who is the 5 o' clock hero? Fluffy said that The Jam were a load of Horst Hrubesch. I disagree, I think they were great. They also disprove the widely held belief that popular things that townies like can't be any good. I liked Bruce Foxtrot and Rick Teggybrush and of course Paul Weller, formerly of the Style Council, who were also good. They got townies into posh stuff, like France, thus raising the standard of living. I'm glad Slow Graffiti was tailor-made for that film about townies. It's my favourite B&S song because it dares to poke its nose out of the comfy confines of Murdochland, where birds are mad and boys are shy and public transport rules the roost. My theory about the secret link between B&S and Iranian cinema was left in tatters yesterday by The Red Ribbon - no buses, no children. Pah! Stereo's back. To celebrate I bought a new CD - The New Latinaires. I think I prefer The Old Latinaires. I've also been listening to The Visigoths at the Po Caff. So far I like song number one and song number four best. When the name "Christopher Timothy" loses its shine, I suggest "Difford and Timbrook", because it reminds me a bit of Squeeze. Do townies like Squeeze? I bet they do. Joe from the townie film My Name Is Joe came to townie the other day wearing his kiltie. What a prannie. I mean, I don't walk around dressed as Daniel Lambert, do I? As for the absence of SOS people from the list crush list, perhaps it's because they're not all in there all day voting for each other and having a right old giggle. But that's only a theory. I don't really know who was on the SOS list, because I was on remand at Her Majesty's pleasure at the time, so I can't have been involved. But I would like it very much if said SOS-ers wrote to us every now and then. I kinda miss those guys. Yes, I'm a grumpy old-timer. I thought the list crush business lost its appeal when it ceased to be run from the inside cover of Big Stu's rough book. Trousercuts sounds good this week. Sinister: it's not as if it's fun

there is a chapter in f. scott fitzgerald's 'the beautiful and damned' called ' a sinister summer'. it is a very fine book, and quite a good chapter. i just had a thought (well, i just had lots, but frankly this is the one i intended to share with the list, even though it doesn't have any b&s content, although it potentially has self-referential sinister content), er... did/does anyone on the list go to a steiner/waldorf school (which are NOT 'orrible christian cults, by the way)? i did, and would like to hear what other's people's experiences of it were. i'm quite ambivalent about it still, seven years after i left. i just wonder how much these things shape and change a person, really. re. lesley jo's musings on death and the fuckness of everything: my homeopath asked me if i was afraid of death. i had to think for a minute, but then i internally said, 'yes you silly cow of course i am, isn't everyone?' i can't imagine not being afraid of it really. it's like, you know constantly that the people close to you, as well as everyone else in the world, will die. and yet you can't believe it, because they're, well they're here, now, and they are all these special things to you, and why would anyone want to take that away? what's the point? and the difference between life and death is so huge, yet separated by a second. i can't get my head round that at all. one minute, most alive, individual person ever, next minute nothing. the same as millions of other people who lived and died. I don't really like fashionable people as I think they tend to be fashionable about far more than their taste in music, like how they are. One thing I love when I meet Sinister people is how down to earth and honest they seem, on the whole. Mildly obsessive and slightly bonkers maybe, but authentic, which is nice. Then again, at the moment I have this theory in my head that things in the world need balance - like good and evil: Ronald McDonald and Robbie Williams on one side, Stuart Murdoch and nuns on the other. And there should be good music and bad music and average music in the middle for average people who aren't really that interested. So why instead do average people get hateful commercial shite like Another Level instead? I think it's an injustice. Another cup of tea? Oooh, you've got crumbs all over the carpet! No, Don't get up, you'll just tread them in. I'll go and get a brush. The other day, I was making a film with some friends of mine about an alien from outer space who crash lands his spaceship down my street. He crash lands because he's being chased by another, evil alien, called Billy Boater, who wears a boater hat and a dressing gown (not exactly state of the art I know). So in the end the good alien (me) kills the bad alien (Peter) and he was lying on the pavement dying when a man drove past in his car, stopped, and wound down the window. He just looked at us bemused. I was standing over Pete with my weapon in my hand (a frisbee, you dirty dawgs), he was wearing a boater hat and a dressing gown and I was wearing a fedora, and was next to a bicycle with wings (my spaceship). The man called out "Are you okay?". We looked confused. "Your friend, is he hurt?." "Er, no." "Are you sure?" "Er, we're making a film actually." "Hmm." The man drove away, very slowly, possibly to fetch assistance. It was very strange. For the rest of the day we expected an ambulance to drive up the street to attend to a "dying man". Oooh, there's nothing like PG Tips is there? No, you can't have another biscuit, not after the mess you made last time. I don't care if you're hungry, you'll just have to wait until dinner. So I got in last night to find FunkySeb throwing up in my living room. Fortunately he was on tv at the time, appearing as a "pikey" on The Bill. He was sporting a not-terribly-becoming nose ring, the kind that bulls wear. As to his acting, I cannot comment. Maybe it was *supposed* to seem like a Children's Film Foundation performance. It was quite an interesting evening of television, all told. The Royle Family returned in mighty fashion, and then they used the Tindersticks "Tiny Tears" on The Sopranos. After that we watched a peculiar program about the history of hip hop which seemed to claim that the form was invented by Michael Caine, The Shadows and Deborah Harry. Curioser and curioser. How come nobody talks about Spearmint on this list? I may be mental, but their new LP is the best British record I've heard all year. Martin Gardner said: >I really like the smell of new trousers. Hello sinister, I feel ropey today. All sleepy and dizzy and hot. Perhaps it's the pox. A little news that may be of interest to some...Stuart David and his Looper are featured on a new TV programme featuring talented young artists across various media called "Young, Gifted and Broke" (I think). It's going to be broadcast Tuesday 5th October on ITV (I *think*) at about 00.30 in England and 02.00 in Scotland (I'd check just in case this means the early hours of 6th October if I were you). These details are all fairly vague, so please don't take them as gospel. There's also the chance to win Stuart's album, new novel and single on the programme, so in bocca al lupo to you all... Thanks to everyone who came on Saturday. No, not that kind of came, you smutty rapscallions, I mean those who came to another triumphal Tigermilking. Erm, sorry it was so hot... Stars of the John Travolta variety were Erica, for perseverance in the face of mass apathy (but then it was Orlando...) and Nick Dastoor, for throwing aside his shackles and performing sexual nonsenses in the middle of the dancefloor. Free love, oh yeah... Sam and I are moving forward organising the next night-of-sexual-frenzy, so watch this space for an end-of-October fandango... There are too many other weekend highlights to mention, but huge Spruce Goose-like props to everyone, basically, and <unsmiley face> about the people I didn't get to meet (am I the only person who managed not to get intimate with Nic's rabbit?). I had more to say, stuff that may have been relevant to people not on our small unimpressive island, but I feel too ill to continue.
