Hi there! Im not dead - contrary, to what the tabloids may be saying. I AM trying desperately hard to pick my 6 choices for Uni. Ive been at it for the last week and i fear i will break down and cry soon. Im down to 15, and i cant think of any other method to remove the last nine. Anyone got one? I did think of putting them in alphabetical order and just taking the first 6, but they all have Business at the start. i did not say that i was afraid of dying, i said i was afraid of death. big difference. i'm not scared of my own death at all, despite the fact that my personal spiritual system is about as coherent as the average rem song and is leaning heavily towards oblivion anyway. though i am afraid of pain. but it is other people's deaths that bother me, and precisely because you can't do anything about it. noel edmunds was a bad analogy, whoever brought him up, because of course i'm scared of him too. LLPJ. when i first heard it, i would have likened the experience to eating a sandwich of the most delicious double filling between two slices of mouldy, crappy bread. so, you made me forget my dreams and photo jenny were the houmous and roasted vegetable of the musical world, with the title track and century of elvis being the week old kwik-save loaf. i now no longer wish to disembowel monica queen, as despite her, erm, unique contribution, llpj is one of my favourite b&s songs lyrically, and you can dance like a fool to it as i discovered at tigerlactating. you made me forget... and photo jenny are still brilliant as well ("i'm in a mess, i'm in a dress" - just beat that for a lyric), but elvis does bring the whole sandwich down. i like it, but i physically couldn't listen to it after a few times. it's like when a really good friend starts to tell a story that you've heard before. it's a good story, you like the person, but YOU'VE HEARD IT BEFORE. gosh, a whole paragraph of b&s content. i feel faint from the unaccustomed effort. of course, it'll be doing the whole sinister community a big favour when they finally release something and we can talk out of our arses about a whole new batch of songs: Listee 1: oh, see i was right about the downward spiral. i'm going to go and wank [oops, did i type wank, i meant sulk] over my copy of tigermilk until they start writing the songs i telepathically told them they should. Listee 2: does anyone else think that Is It Smutty Not To Ride Buses? sounds a bit like a twee-er/slower/faster/better/quieter/backwards/completely different version of [insert any title] by The Smiths? Listee 3: who is that on the cover? Listee 4: you know when stuart sings that bit about green arab angels in Let's Make This Song Title Really Long, well, i reckon it's referring to a small cafe in paris where there is actually a bit of graffiti near the ceiling which mentions angels, and i know because mark e. smith wrote it when i got him drunk there one night. Listees 5, 6, 7 and 8: it's [insert name] on the cover. Listees 9, 10 and 11: you know, i thought the lyric about green arab angels was actually saying 'i'm a wanker'. d'oh, how silly am I? but it was funny wasn't it? Listee 12: b&s are really good aren't they? i just really relate to what they're saying and they gave me the courage to give up drugs/stop listening to oasis/talk to that cute girl/feel superior to people who are happier than me/buy a field mice record. excuse me while i go and cry. Have a look in the archives if you need assurance that the list was still appalling even when those shadowy SoSers ruled the roost. Anyway, yes, 'Slow Graffiti' is a bit special, even if it is stained with the blood of capitalism's forgotten victims. I must say, this idea that being commissioned to write a song on a particular subject is selling out to the Man is pretty hard-line stuff. I mean even workers in Communist Russia got paid to do specific jobs. It was no good if some night watchman started unblocking municipal drains instead and when challenged by Party Officials, started mumbling things about artistic integrity. That's not a very good analogy, is it? PJM is quite right that it's nice when B&S songs venture beyond the borders of Murdochland. I would like to see them write a song about the rise and fall of the Mafia. But what do I know? I'm always suggesting that they do things, like get Chris Leonard to join as third fiddle, with special popular culture reference responsiblities, but they never listen. Or Mrs Murdoch could join just to keep a check on things. I don't think there's ever been a band with someone's mum in it, but I would just love to be corrected. Email me publically. Is it just me, or was that comment along the lines of "The Smiths first album is great, but do be aware that it condones child abuse" just the greatest thing ever? hey! toronto area sinisterines! last night i went to the bangers and mash party at the vox and they played 3 B&S songs as well as the Ballad of Ray Suzuki and a bunch of other cool stuff (including generous portions of Smiths and Pulp action). So don't say i never did you any favours. I'll probably go back next friday as well and i may see some of you there. sigh* i still remember when bangers and mash did their thing at the study hall...back when it actually existed....sigh....i feel very old. Hi I'm way over-tired at the moment...two 5 hour trips on one day...I don't think I'll get that Montreal job, unless the other candidate is a complete loser...the interview was incredibly nerve-wracking...my head felt squashed NEW YEAR'S I have just realized that I don't have any plans for New Year's. Don't remind me. Maybe I'll just rent a car and drive up to an inn in the middle of snowy nowhere, with my imaginary boyfriend, a drink some vino bianco, mutter and sing to myself... If anyone in NY or DC or anywhere within a 2 hour flight of Toronto is having anything 'sinister', let me know. Admittedly, I don't have more than 2 friends here. SMITHS Wow! 2 references...and 28 posts to read. Yes, it was "Battya" I think he was desperate for new Smiths material...he's living with a fat girl now so yes, some girls ARE bigger than others. DEATH Afraid to die? Why? I almost slipped into a coma at age 14 and I haven't been the same since. It's an odd feeling to well, feel your soul inhabiting only a tiny part of your body. It's not like being paralysed, because you can still move. It's more like your overall consciousness is reduced. You maintain sense of your being but it can easily slip into darkness, sinking back and being enveloped by it. Pain is terrifying, I must admit. Loss of dignity is no fun. But we all die...soft flesh, brittle bones, too many scary machines. yeah, well this is how slow i am, some one mentioned a room for romeo brass WEEKS ago and i was meaning to say, i saw it at the festival and belle and sebastian are on the soundtrack. okay, so its only ten seconds from the middle of fox in the snow, but its quite a lovely experience to be sitting watching a film and have a piece of music that you know and love to that extent come welling up around you totally unexpectedly, like after all the stone roses and stuff and FUCKEN SUNHOUSE LIKE ON EVERY SOUNDTRACK TO EVERY FUCKEN FILM SHANE MEADOWS HAS EVER MADE. although the film did start with a message to you rudy and end (for some unfathomable reason) with everywhere by billy bragg, which is okay by me. although i ought to lay off the bragg after everyone i spoke to at bowlie seemed to think i was obsessed with him. i mean, JUST BECAUSE YOU WEAR A SHIRT WITH A POP SINGERS NAME ON IT, IT DOESNT MEAN YOU WANT TO DEBATE THE RELATIVE MERITS OF HIS CANON OF WORK INTO THE WEE SMALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT. its enough to drive a man to drink. more drink i mean. anyway... the use of fox in the snow greatly adds to the emotional impact of the scene. that might sound wanky but its true. i have to admit my eyes were a bit damp. and i would recommend the film to all of yous. on another matter, in my worthless opinion it is important what type of music someone listens to. like when you check your brothers girlfriends walkman and its vonda fucken sheperd, and she goes well its all a matter of taste and you go NO, ITS NOT, ITS A LINE IN THE SAND, because its all about feeling, and if theyre the sort of person that would appreciate SOUL ABSENT VOIDNESS like that, then theyre probably not the sort of person who you would connect with emotionally. of course, thats just my own personal experience and i wouldnt want any of you to live your life to these words, and i would be overjoyed to be proved wrong one day. too much coffee not enough hugs from tjohn +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Ok everyone, I've had a few responses to this. Here's the general plan, October 2nd - A Saturday. 6:30 - 7:00pm, underneath the tallest column type thing in George Square. If anyone wants to meet earlier/later, please let me know and I'll make allowances for that, ok? We meet, wait for stragglers and then go wherever we feel like (some suggestions include the Art School and Nice n' Sleazys). Everyone ok with that I hope.
