hello have just moved to london, or, more precisely, am n the process of moving to london (staying here in an empty room during the week, back in hemel hempstead at weekends packing boxes for the big move at the start of october). anyway, walking to work this morning down the side streets of hammersmith a girl crossed the road and ended up walking 5 yards in front of me. 'oh, a bad badtz maru bag', i thought to myself, ' you don't see many of them in england'. looking more closely there was a belle and sebastian badge attached to said bag. it was about now that i should've said 'oh, a belle and sebastian fan, pleased to meet you' but i never. so if you're reading this a belated 'hello' decided not to go to the party before all tomorrow's parties that wasn' t, went to sit in a pub where other friends were meeting before the spearmint gig in camden. got there early, as expected and sat reading charles higson and listening to peel from the night before for 45 minutes before anyone i knew turned up. cath came over and said hello but nobody else did. people (more than one) i've known for 10 years didn't even cross the bar to speak to me. me, disgruntled?... so, i hope you all had a better time than i did. sounds like you did. actually, whilst i was there someone mentioned that belle and sebastian had played that weekend's nick drake tribute gig. can anyone confirm or, more likely, deny this? also, watching back old videos taped from the chart show, one of them had a snippet about stuart working with two of his idols, old time blokes who i can't remember but they were of the ilk of simon and garfunkel (scott walker? is he still alive?). was this true or was it another pack of lies? oh, if anyone has a first generation copy of that scottish b&s documentary and want's a copy of the black sessions french tv broadcast (complete with star trek:TOS style special effects) in exchange then please get in touch. ta. cheers andy koogy(a)clara.co.uk already thinking of moving out even before i'm fully moved in. don't ever live with anyone who owns the house cos they have too much power. landlady's latest trick, apart from hogging the bathroom in the mornings and having the tv up way too loud is turning the fridge down so that eating yoghurt becomes some sort of food poisoning version of russian roulette. oh um. was looking forward to moving to london cos of the pun potential of several of the places around here 'sexual ealing' for one, 'solid gold, easy acton' for another. I've just found out that my flatmate is going away for a whole six weeks and I'll have the entire place to myself. I'm feeling oddly excited about this in a way not unlike Tom Cruise in "Risky Business". Being far to sensible I won't be allowing my house to be overrun by gangs of dodgy people and I have no plans to wreck any expensive sports cars, but I can't rule out a spell of running around and singing in my underwear. The most likely song candidates at the moment are "Just a baby" and "Mayfly", both songs that I think deserve much more attention and acclaim. Fortunately for everyone I don't have a webcam so you'll be spared the sight of me bouncing up & down on the couch doing my best scantily clad Stuart M impression. Anyway as you might be aware about this time last week I sent a mail to the list about being to shy to go to the picnic on Saturday. Well I went and meet a load of amazing people and had the best day/night out I've had in ages. I'd just like to give everyone a *big* hug for being soooooooo nice and for making me feel welcome. I can't wait until the next get together. Hmmmm I'm positive I had something else I wanted to say. I was crammed into the Tube on the way to work with my head positively brimming with bright ideas but they seem to have been mislaid, I guess I'll save them for next time. Oh I also finally managed to see FunkySeb doing his thing in the new Moby video last night, it was excellent. I think we've got Fatboy Slim to thank for reintroducing crazy dancing to the medium of music videos, it makes a nice change from tacky synchronised dance moves. I know there are going to be some very irritated people who don't want any Smiths discussions on this list, but since I didn't start it.. It's so hard to decide which Smiths to recommend most highly, since my two most very favorite songs of theirs "Rubber Ring" and "Panic" aren't on my favorite album The Queen is Dead... but I'd say go with The Queen is Dead. Song for song it's got the most consistent level of quality and it withstands the most repeated listens, though lord knows they're all worth owning.... -2 or 3 things I know about chris Section 5: Word Use Pupil uses three given words in one sentence. I never called Blake schizophrenic. I merely mentioned that his switching around from topic to topic was a bit disconcerting. Especially, when he all of a sudden 'jumped' into up the bum sex. I think he is shamelessly vying for list crush votes myself. Why else would anyone mention up the bum sex and my name in 2 subsequent posts? ha ha ha. I would like to publicly thank all of the contributors to Laura Llew's Lovely Literary List of 1999. So far, I have 3 pages full of book suggestions and only 1 for "Catcher in the Rye." Yesterday, I finished my first book off the list. It was Lucy Adler's suggestion of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity". It scored points with me because 1 - it listed the top 5 Elvis Costello songs which of course "Allison" was on and I was playing it at that moment when I read it. B - it details the different "rules" and overall complexity of making mix tapes. I adore making scratch tapes for others and definitely think there is an art to it. One of my roommates once commented that I spent more time making 1 mix tape for a friend than she saw me spend on homework during the 2 years we lived in the same apartment. I even have a composition book in which i keep all of the songs that i put on each tape that I make. Interesting to see that someone else was almost as anal as I am about the whole procedure. I was quite disappointed that I could only find 3 of the books from the list at my local library. A couple were checked out but they didn't have most of them. Quite discouraging - but I will keep searching for them. Oh! I almost forgot. This is for those of you who gave me book suggestions. On the list, I put down the title of the book, the author, the person's name who recommended it and their e-mail address. If you do not want to be connected with the book for the whole world to see, please let me know. (Serves you right for suggesting smut anyway. Though, I don't want this to become a forum for those trying to soar to the top of that ever so popular list crush poll by making their names synonmous with smut. I won't have it - Oh no I won't! Well, unless there is something in it for me. Then, we can negotiate. hehe) But do please send me (if you haven't already) your favorite book so that I can add it to the list. I'll send a copy to those who request it after a week or so. That should give people plenty of time to get me their recommendations. So, come on - all the cool kids are doing it. Oh! My exciting news of the millenium. I got a letter yesterday from the Dean of my school saying that my internship hours would count towards graudation (which they weren't going to allow for tedious reasons). Which means that I, Laura Llew, am going to be a college graduate as of December. YaY! Very happy am I! I have decided to name my first child after the head of my major who wrote the letter of good news - Kyle L. Pehrson (good thing it wasn't the co-director of the department who happens to be Dr. Cox. Geez, would that child be tormented on the playground). I remember he dressed up in full military uniform when we were talking about the military in my social welfare policy class. Hence, when I got the good news I watched "Harold and Maude" because he reminded me of Uncle Richard. Oh, how I do love that movie! They say its a cult film but I've only ever known 3 other people who have seen it much less liked it... That news with the arrival of a delicious 6 cd package from a member of this very list has made my entire week. Yes, 6 cds - including a copy of Tigermilk and some of the most brilliant mixes you have ever heard. I almost peed in my pants from the sheer excitement of it all. I do believe it is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. I for one do believe that this list has the sincerest most beautiful people on it that there ever was. Not that I am in any biased. Well, I should head off to bed already before my dreams and what I am writing in this post start to intermingle. Though, that would probably be more entertaining. Sinister people: How goes it? It's been awhile since I posted to the list, but I had such a cool (and belle & sebastian-related) day that I got the sudden urge to post. So it goes. SUBJECT HEADINGS Whoever thought of the idea is a genius. Mad props. COOL POPSTAR ENCOUNTER Ok, so I work as a DJ for my college radio station (92 WICB, Ithaca, NY). Every Tuesday night we do a show called Artists Only, where we pick a band or artist and do a two-hour special on them. This week it was my turn, and I chose the band Madder Rose. The show was going along quite well, and with about a half hour left in the broadcast the phone rang. It was MARY LORSON of MADDER ROSE, thanking me for doing the show! How cool is THAT?!? In the fifteen years that Artists Only has been running, that's the first known time that the actual "Artist" has called in! Anyways, Madder Rose is my favorite band right about now. I haven't listened to anything else in the past two days. If you don't have their new album HELLO JUNE FOOL, I strongly recommend it. Definitely the best thing I've heard all year. With the exception of POSSIBLY East River Pipe's THE GASOLINE AGE. Get that too. Anyone else had any strange popstar encounters such as mine? DYLAN 'N DA FLICKS, YO Sorry. My ebonical self just took over briefly. Anyhow, I'm taking a POLITICS IN POPULAR MUSIC class this semester. We're currently discussing Bob Dylan's role as a political performer. Imagine my delight to come into class today and have the professor say, "We're watching a film today. It was made by E.A. Pennebaker during Dylan's tour of the UK in 1965. It's called, ummm....uhhhh..." Then I blurted out, "Don't Look Back?" And the professor stared at me and said, "Yeah, that's it." I sat there during the whole film and sung B&S to myself. People were giving me weird looks. Little do they know why... REACTION TO FILM I hate Bob Dylan more after seeing the film than I did before, which is tough to top. What a pretentious loudmouth prick. Nice film though. The TIME magazine interview is classic. Hello all, Not to be a total downer (or to continue the streak of downer messages Sinister has produced as of late) but my day was absolute crap and none of my friends care too much so I'll quickly and quietly say a few things then go to bed or something. I really can't stand being made the butt of joke after joke, even if the jokesters are my friends. I'm not an overly senstive person I don't think, but once I realize I'm being singled out over and over (and thereby alienated) I get so pissed off and depressed I'm almost violent. I'm a fairly sarcastic person and for some reason so are most of my friends but I just really can't take it for too long for some reason. I think its because it reminds me of when I was alot younger and got picked on regularly for being artistic and dramatic and also for being the shortest one of the crowd. The people I clung to for approval totally took advantage of that and pretty much made me the self-conscious person that I am today. They were just evil and I see alot of what they did in my friends when they go out of their way to piss me off and get a rise out of me or just see how long they can torment me before I snap. I'm not the shortest one in the group anymore and I hang out with primarily artistic people but somewhere I must have a huge fucking bulls-eye painted on me and everyone seems more than happy to take aim at that. I figured that once I found a group of people who were on my wavelength and weren't judgemental that I'd be able to totally relax and be myself without fear of retribution but apparently this is not the case. I'd just really like to get an explanation out of some pompous idiots as to why this is... Ok, I feel much better now that I've said that, though still pretty angry and hurt, but I think I may be able to go to sleep now. Thanks for listening... Steve C. oh could it be that time again? looks like i've decided to share my sorry life with you all. not to sound depressing, however. but is there any better word than "sorry," particularly when i feel the need to write to a faceless crowd of hundreds, nay, a thousand? maybe it's listening to the magnetic fields that's doing it to me, maybe it's the fact that i have no television to distract me, and that my primary occupation lately has been playing solitaire on the big round table in the living room, chatting with my housemates as they come and go, steve sometimes joining me at the big round table to play solitaire as well (we have two decks of cards). How hard can it be to rebuild my life after losing jon? i'm in a new place, with familiar people that were never particularly close to me, but i find myself opening up to them an astonishing amount. is it necessary for me to resort to drinking and partying with people i barely know just to meet some new people, maybe a cute boy who will think i'm cute, too. maybe someone with the same tastes as me, who thinks i'm smart and ambitious, respects me, appreciates me. all qualities jon lost somewhere back there. there's the hope he keeps feeding me that he's going to find them again, that things will be okay again between us. i want to believe him, but i'm a big fan of a quick fix. Of course, the drinking and partying didn't work so well last week, no matter how nice i looked or how pleasant i smelled. i batted my eyelashes and laughed honestly and smiled and didn't act like a whore or anything, but i barely got a glance from anyone, male or female. I don't drink very often. this was basically out of boredom, a way of bonding with my new housemates. i had a good enough time, but i'm sure the novelty of dressing up cute and drinking bad beer will wear off shortly. in the meantime i've started dressing cute every day, like i did my first year here, when i wanted to meet boys. when i met jon i didn't dress cute. i guess i want to compete with the attractive hip girls here that i don't feel like i can compete with. and only taking one class that happens to be off-campus at a women's college doesn't help me meet new people very much. once again i wonder why i'm writing you this. i think gibby's post regarding the girl on the bus got me a little sad, thinking about how boys don't have that reaction to me. like i'm some kind of hag or something. maybe i smell funny. obligatory b&s content in a vain attempt to attract the belle and sebbie kids here i've attached two of my badges to my book bag. unfortunately, the only thing that's accomplished is a great deal of water staining on my precious badges. i guess i'll have to order more soon. oh, and i heard twattybus being played loudly in one of the houses here as i was walking by, and it made me smile. oh dear, that was awfully depressing and you people must think i postively wallow in self-pity all the time, but it just came pouring out and now i'm not sure what to do about it. huh. hopefully list mummy hunny won't have me shot on sight or anything for boring you to tears. -kerry Homepage: http://hamp.hampshire.edu/~kwl96/crap.html +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
