Hello fellow 'fitchers TOPIC It seems that Abercrombie & Fitch have *gasp* lobbed onto Sinister chic. Their new campaign, especially the art class ad, is very Caravaggio-meets-Kevin Williamson...(a double helping of poofs!!) Now while you may argue that Caravaggio is be somewhat Sinister and that Kevin Williamson is most certainly NOT...I can assure you that the result is a little unnerving. THE WHO While in Montreal this past weekend, I saw an fat older (70ish) man wearing a Who t-shirt. It looked brand new and it was slightly see-through with a tacky silkscreen photo of the band on the front. I think it was 80s Who (haha) JOBS I have my second interview with that dork on Friday...he says I'm first in line and that I have to meet one of the VPs. Well well...I think I'll take it then. INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH shy boy who has made himself known to a select few comes out of the, errm, closet, to celebrate a new life. in brighton. but it's not what you think, boys, so sit right back down. INNOCENT QUESTION we, as a list, tossed around the idea of some sort of sinister directory, a sort of who's where and where's it at of the sinister world. and it was a jolly good idea - it would save so many people mailing in to ask if anyone lives in slovakia and what they should for entertainment on a sunday. not that i'd ever dream of... INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL thanks to ludicrous good fortune or maybe years of honing my skills i'll be going to nitra in slovakia next week. five nights away and only one show! which means four nights to seek pleasure. guide me, friends, cos i'll need it. INSTANT PICTURES of course i'll be taking my camera, silly! and they'll be going on my new webpage when i get back. and when i make it. but with the price of domains at the all-time low of a fiver, and some shameless self-promotion needed to kick-start my freelance career i'd be stupid not to have one. Hello bedfellows. Ailsa said on her pooter: hearing someone ask if they could get together with Ally to make disco babies at the weirdest party in the world (cheers, Joss)... And there wasn't actually a ~ but maybe there should have been. For the uninitiated, I dragged a ton of Sinister folk to a party/gig thing on the strength of a phone message which said it was the greatest thing ever. Then I lost them (Dr Pants said they were all in the stoner room, natch). Needless to say, it was somewhat poor. Sorry. But isn't Stoke-Newington beautiful? ;) So, yes. That London business. Marvellous. Some personal highlights: Before the Betsy Trotwood, my flatmate managed to get us in free to a free booze thing for some terrible band called Day One. They were, of course, utter balls, but there was this Irish journalist there who I ended up talking metal with. As you do. He suggested we form a band for him to manage and call our first LP 'Passport to Hell'. Then on the way to the Betsy, he began canvassing public opinion on the tube. People on the tube don't know how to react when confronted with such earnest questioning. A bemused Italian man agreed that Passport to Hell was a winner, but thought that claiming we were cannibals was a little much. Another man thought the cannibal thing was a go-er, but maybe we should lose the shirts. Everyone else ran away. It was a truly classy drunken display. He also told me about being on tour with Squeeze in 1980 when they dumped their sandwiches and booze rider in a big pile and skated around the dressing room on it. I hope B&S do that on their next tour. Seems the logical step once the first guitar has been smashed. Another good bit was me and Brendan (Mr Booze Explosion, if you will) having a Tigermilking piggyback fight with Dr Pants and Tim Hopkins. We lost, but only because Trousers fights dirty. My friend Sean saw notorious East End criminal 'Mad' Frankie Fraser on the tube. I'm upset that I wasn't there. Just imagine having a picture with the man on your wall? I could've made a brasseye style 'madometer' to go underneath it too. (Touched up by a nonce? Oh, he'd pay for that....) For those few interested. He politely bought a ticket and sat quietly for the duration of his journey. The crazy loon. 'Mad', eh? So anyways, thanks and hellos to those who were so nice. Which means everyone except the bloke who knocked a vodka and orange over me and wouldn't buy one back. Thanks to Pam for keeping me a chickfactor for Saturday. Did anyone read the Steve Malkmus interview? Utter prick. I met him once and allowed my fondness for his band mask the fact that he was an unfriendly little shit. Still like Pavement though. Hi again, when I first joined this list, I made a very good job of cocking-up passing on some information about Looper gigs in London. Wrong day with wrong venue...oh! it was classic. Anyway, here's some more, straight from the horses mouth, and if you already know about them, you can bloody well just sit there and look smug (Mark! Your primary school teacher mode is catching) London Oxford Street Virgin Megastore: October 18th London Oxford Street Borders: October 19th and I guess you should phone them up to find more details, should you need them. Borders is lovely, it's famous (so I hear) in the States as being somewhere you can pick up dates while browsing in the "Sexual Health" section. Or indeed the DIY section, if thats your thing, where the bands usually play. Mail me ahead a bit and we could share an overpriced cappacino, staring out of the window at the tourists scuttling along oxford street below. Oh god. You know when you drink loads and suddenly your memory isn't as good as it used to be <cough>. Well the lovely lovely Ms Ross just said: the Radio Ga-ga-style TIGGERJAMMIES moment at the end of Tigerwanking WHICH I HAD COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN ABOUT! I thought I'd been "relatively" sober (better than last time anyway), but now I'm thinking about it, perhaps there are a few gaps. I do remember Starry spilling my pint and running away (but I chased her, and she soon coughed up for another (hahaha)). And the fact that beer was relatively cheap at that Opporto place. I hadn't forgot about all the lovely people I met esp. Nicxxxxxxxxx who put me up and laughed at Hollyoaks with me (and weej). Fair play, I spent a small shedload of money this weekend, money I didn't really have, but i am *so* glad I did because every time I go to a Sinister gathering I realise how special you all are and, as several people have also mentioned, I'm sure I now have more friends on this list than in "real life". Yes, you lot. Well. A good 5% of you at least. You were fun. I had fun. I don't like being back home. Sorry, I seem to be writing in uncharacteristically short sentences, which I probably should learn to speak in, given the great difficulty I seemed to be having talking at the weekend. Didn't stop me trying though. Is everyone bored of people talking about what they did and who they met yet? Tough, I'm going to talk about exactly that. I met loads of people I know, and loads more I didn't, but do now. First time encounters with Archel, Weejay (did you get somewhere to stay OK - I did try and find you and couldn't, sorry), the Paula Cullen Booze Explosion (who completely failed to live up to her name by NOT BRINGING DRINK TO THE PICNIC, but deserves props for recognising me by my duffel coat), Juicy Lucy, her friend whose name I doubt I could spell (and Kim the rabbit, natch), Claire T, Jan, Dr Sean H and his never-ending supply of change for the phone, erm, some other people, sorry, it's all a bit blank...hearing someone ask if they could get together with Ally to make disco babies at the weirdest party in the world (cheers, Joss)...realising that squirrels turn into cats when you throw things at them...discovering that English goats are great...going home from Tigermilking in a shopping trolley...realising I have more friends in London than here at home...the Radio Ga-ga-style TIGGERJAMMIES moment at the end of Tigerwanking...waltzing to All Saints...watching Nick Dastoor dance/do Joanna Lumley impressions...being the second best team in the PoCaff pop quiz...going on a bus past B&S Support Services...these were a few of my favourite things. And oh, unfeasible amounts of respect to the impossibly lovely Nickie D for letting me take over his sitting room for four nights. And no, Nick, that doesn't say "cock" :) And to Lixi for having a local pub that plays 70s WHO to end my weekend in true Sinister fashion. I had a Sinister (and sinister) dream too. It involved Erica and Alan Shearer. It scared me. But not as much as waking up from the dream to find out that I was in bed with Trousers. I love you all. Can I come back soon? Oh, and Martin, I'll give you one next time. omigod, i lost my pen at the weekend! i've just realised it. i know this may not seem a great tragedy, but this is no mere bic we're talking about here. it is my fairly recently acquired papermate gel roller and the only thing i have been able to write anything creative with for months, so it has a mystical value. if i don't get it back the sinister novel will never be written. so please tell me if you found it.
