Sinister: Glasgow School of Art and Jimmy Corrigan, Smartest Kid on Earth

Hi there, I just got home from my midterm exam in Medieval Women in the Visual Arts course. It was pretty hard. In my modern art history class though, we were talking about Art Nouveau, and my teacher brought up the Glasgow School of Art, which was designed by Macintosh, I think (who was from Scotland). She also said he designed a bunch of Miss Cranston's Tea Rooms around Glasgow during an turn of the century temperance movement. All very interesting architecture and interior design. What I was wondering is this: is there any connection between Belle and Sebastian and the Glasgow School of Art? Did any of them go there or did they ever play a show there? To anyone who lives in or has visited Glasgow: Have you visited or toured the School of Art or been to any of the tea rooms? Just curious to know what your impressions because they seem very interesting. Also, I've read some of the Jimmy Corrigan comics and I agree...they are pretty sad. Especially the one where he goes with his dad to the world's fair and his dad leaves him there. I should get that book next, since I've only read the comic in the newspaper. hi there eric and anyone else in TX, you were asking about houston I moved from houston to oakland about 2 years ago. it is a fun place, but you do have to look a bit. i think I remember a scottish girl posting saying she was living in houston now as well. i wish there had been more b&s fans when I was living there. but there are some still. just hiding. first off, you should go to notsuoh. its one of my favorite places. its downtown at main and preston, its sort of a coffee shop weird hang out place. be careful though, becuz it is right near a lot of the awful yuppie bars that have cropped up around there. if you go and you happen to meet the owner, jim, tell him that I sent you, cuz he is a friend of mine. also, brasil is another pretty good spot for food and coffee and drinks, it is on westheimer and woodhead I think? there is a dance club on 802 fannin that is pretty cool, they play pop, and 80's/90's alternative, not super techno, the best you're gonna get for a houston club I think. also, rudyards on waugh is the place where most of the indie type bands play. its good. as for bands, I like port vale quite a lot. try to catch them. and sad like crazy too. Sinister: "all is quite over One Tree Hill"

irrelevant post with even less B&S content than usual. One Tree Hill is no more. Fans of U2, or ex-fans who were well into "The Joshua Treee" as a teenager will be shocked/sad/amused/interested to know that Auckland's "One Tree Hill" is no more. The 125 year-old tree, one of auckland's most recognisable landmarks, was cut down and airlifted away by helicopter today as it had become dangerous in its old age. Everyone here is very sad. yes, I know, I know, it was just a tree. Oh, and for the thousand or so of you who have *no* idea what 'm talking about, in Auckland there is this small mountain/big hill, called "One treee Hill". At it's summit is an obilisk monument and one giant pine tree. It's pretty much visible from all over auckland, and is very striking and beautiful. But a few years ago some Maori (ie. indigeous New Zealanders) attacked it with a chainsaw on a couple of occasions, as they saw the tree as "a symbol of colonial oppression", and it started to die, hence todays activity. And the U2 connection - the song was written for, and dedicated to, a long time roadie of the band, who was a New Zealander, and who died in a moter accident. Quite why I posted this I don't know ....... Anyway, take care everyone. It's more of the same things... I have been listening to the dog on wheels ep like CRAZY lately, excuse me for being a little late but this was the only gap in my Belle and Sebastian collection just filled in recently by my MUSIC FANTASTIQUE shopping spree... along with the new PJ divine simply divine (actually I haven't gotten this yet but I've heard this much the BLASTED cd store ran out...) along with the new Cocteau Twins greatest bsides CD import my take on this cd is that it's underrated, I read reviews that blasted it in comparison with the other ep's and after listening to it I think it's gold... 1. DOG on Wheels - the first lines make me whimper the rest make me shuffle my feet. 2. The State that I'm In - better than the original not by much though... 3. String Bean Jean - My av song on the EP deeeeelish! 4. Belle and Sebastian - Quirky silly.. other than that i've been really retropectively love lorn... I think cold weather brings this out in people, it's the thought of warms hands and cuddleing under blankets that make you wish you had them again... Sinister: I LOVE 80'S GAINSBOURG

hi everyone god, life has been way too busy lately. between school and work, bah. i had a week off from uni last week, and i got sick during it. bah. i did, however, finally get my braces off (hooray!) i've been getting bored during random parts of each day, and when it happens i've been taking out a pint sized notebook and a pen (regular sized) and i've been trying to figure out what my 20 favorite records of the year are so far. i tried to list ten but i went insane trying to do that. i buy so many records, it's sick...they're like food now, i just consume music so quickly. one of my goals before the end of the year is to finally finish my damn webpage, so i'm going to decide what m favorite things were this year - albums/ep's, singles/random songs, haircuts, and just random occurances. i'm also going to try and finish making my damn music. it would be a lot easier if my keyboard and drum machione weren't still home in NJ. oh well. anyway, i'm sure a bunch of you are already listening to some of this, but it's always good not go give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to good music, because a new discovery is like a new friend, or a new twisted obsession if one gets lucky enough. listen to these records: 1. Dymaxion "Dymaxion x 4 + 3 = 39:21" - as far as i know, this is really hard to find in america - it's on trattoria in japan, but the band is fom NYC. crazy stuff...the only band i've ever heard that i could compare it to is Silver Apples, but this has more of a loose, NYC groove to it. it shouldn't work, but it does. 2. Badly Drawn Boy "Hour of Bewilderbeast" i think he deserved the Mercury Prize for this - it's a beautiful record. lots of songs, but it just means more to consume and love, because you'll become infatuated w/ it. 3. High Llamas "Buzzle Bee" yeah i know it doesnt come out until halloween, but vintage vinyl here in STL has a promo copy that they let me listen to. they get more and more psychedelic and swirly... brazilian influences too, not just the obvious pet sounds/smile & beatles references. 4. kid koala "carpal tunnel syndrome" one of the coolest, funniest, and creative records i've heard in a while. he's got a great sense of humor, and the groove is nice as well. 5. blur "music is my radar" single - i love the B-side, black book. nice soulful stuff. the title track is kind of silly though... it's quite cool of them to sneak a bit of a latin style in there though. Sinister: Me and Pedro, the magical red cloak, and other stories

Hewwo, Woo, I've had an ace week. Mostly. On Tuesday I bought joint custody of a whip for one pound fifty pee, and called it Cecil Drake Harvey Tulloola Goldsmith, and had grate fun pretending to be in the circus with it, in glasgow. And my blonde friend, who has also custody of cecil drake harvey tulloola goldsmith, said that her and her manfriend Mark will have lots of fun playing with it too. So everyone is happy. On Wednesday, I went Laserquesting with John which was ace, because I shot him by accident, which makes me think that, if it was real guns and we were in Star Wars, I wouldn't be the best person to have on your team. Then we went to George Square, and fed all our lunch to the pigeons (well, I did anyway), and one sat on my hand, and it was grate, and then we saw Donald Dewar's funeral car. Then we went to Flip, and met Neil (hullo neil) and he said hullo and some other funny things, and I bought a magic red cloak with duffel coat buttons, and I thought it was grate, and I was well pleased. Oh, and I bought a record by the Sleepy Time Trio, because it had a fabby cover, which made me giggle. Then John and me met up with Amy and Jason Andreas (who only stayed long enough for me to force a hug on him), and we went to the 13th Note, and did all the stuff that Amy said in her post, and played with the fantastic juke box, and I got very embarassed, because everyone was being so nice to me, and wrote lovely things on my bag and gave my cloak the name Pedro. And it took me a whole half hour to get the melted wax and glitter off my hand, but it was fun anyway. And then I got the train home, and I fell asleep. The next morning, I realised that I had lost my mobile phone, which has lots of numbers stored on it (If you see him, his name's Beep, and tell him to come home), so now I must look for him. Then today (friday) I hid in the cupboard for a while, because I was upset about something, then I went down the glen to look for animals to be friends with and pretty things to see. And I had on my red cloak and my rainbow brite star, and I felt all happy again, because I made friends with a squirrel and called it Jam. Then I went to my friend James' house and he made me sad because he kept asking to see my breasts, but I wouldn't let them, so he decided he was going to die soon instead, and I don't really want him to die, because he's ok, even if he is a perv, and he lets me play Final Fantasy Eight sometimes, and Squall Leonhart has a really grate gun/swordy type thing. The I went to the house of moving pictures to see a scary film with Harrison Ford in it, but my friend Nicola got annoyed, because I kept cracking silly jokes about biscuts and cannibals at the really tense moments, and nearly got us thrown out, but not on purpose. And I drank all of my friend Mark's juice, but he didn't mind, because we have the same taste in girls, even though his girlfriend, who is Debs, my whip partner custody blonde, was getting a bit jealous, because she is not Druscilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was listening to Tigermilk for the first time in ages last night. I think I might have been so wrapped up in the grate world of liking belle and sebastian that I haven't taken time to properly listen to them in ages, which is never healthy. But I did last night, and I was wowzled and bowlied over by the amazingness of Struan's voice, because it is grate, and he can sing and make it sound effortless that he is throwing fabby sounds all over the place, and making people joyful and happy. I also decided last night that everyone in the world is a Belle and Sebastian fan. They just don't know it yet. I'm going to go now. Sorry for boring you. Again.
