howdedoody, how's it hanging?!! well, at the moment, je suis tres heureuse, parce que je suis allais a la piquenique a Edinbourg!! sorry for all you non-french speakers (and probs you french speakers too), i had my higher french exam today and it's all stuck in my head, after the damn exam, typical eh?!!.......had english, art and maths, english and art went okay i think, should get b's anyways, maths was a bit of a bugger (our teacher decided not to teach us half the stuff that was in the exam. oh hurrah.) but god knows how i'll do in the results....answers on a postcard please.... anyway, i'm going to the embra picnic!!!!!! a mystery benefactor recently secretly gave me a crisp twenty pound note to contribute towards my train fare....this person knows who they are and i am forever indebted to you!!!! I WILL PAY YOU BACK THOUGH!!! oh, i digress.......yep, i certainly should be hitting the streets of edinburgh on the 10th, then off to glasgow to see the divine looper avec mon ami(<grin>!!!!!!) that night which i cannot wait for cos i absolutely love looper. t'would be better if it was b&s that were playing of course, but i'll have to wait for that.....so yes, it'll be grand.....i don't quite know what to expect mind, is it a bit of b&s karaoke in a park, or something as vicious as footie or what??? :o) am listening to "she's losing it" at the moment.....oft overlooked by myself, but that makes it all the more special when i rediscover it.....could possibly be my fave b&s song, but then again i only have to hear the first wee twiddly guitar bit at the start of llpj and i'm dancing about like a tigger high on sunny delight, so i dunno......i wonder what the results of the b&s poll thingy was......... am thinking of getting my haircut. at the moment, it's a sort of layered, chin length mess of dark brown and copper fluff (all natural of course, don't use dye cos i'm too scared i'll hate it! sad huh?!), and i need a change! i don't want it too short, but it's really getting on my nerves at the moment, so i dunno.....maybe i'll wait until b4 t in the park..... i like legal man a lot. it's so summery and shimmery and it makes me smile even when stuck revising (*ahem*) and although "loneliness of a middle distance runner" is great, i do love legal man too.....y'never know, it might get released soon.......i wish......i am falling in love with so many songs at the moment.....i adore "babylon" by david gray, it's sublime, as is "facts of life" by black box recorder, and "don't i hold you" by wheat and "tears on the golfcourse" by laeto (think something along the lines of mogwai and you're there) and oh so many others that would take forever to list......i've come to the conclusion that most great songs don't actually make it very high in the charts, so if legal man doesn't either then we can take it as a sign of quality and taste, rather than failure (which it most definitely is not)......though if it gets high in the charts (i hear no. 11 calling too...) then that's cool too! oh, i'm all going round in circles now.... has anyone else been confronted by the fearsome sight that is buffalo g? i was subjected to them on cd:uk the other week, i nearly choked on my frosties, i mean, the lassie with the major curly hair, it looks like she needs to be plugged into the national grid each night to get it that curly, and she looks like a horse.....and they are far too violent and perhaps offensive too, as are daphne and celeste, have you seen their adverts? in magazines they have an advert saying "UGLY" in huge writing, and it says to "cut it out and stick it on the back of someone you think is ugly!!" (~~~thinks for a while~~~) c'mon, that is just plain mean, but i have the terrible feeling that one will be suspended from my spine soon...... daphne and celeste and buffalo g are evil, maybe we should round them up and lock them in a room together to see who'd die first.... my money's on the curly haired slacker from buffalo g......i could open a six pack of whoop-ass on her easily, grr.... sinister how r we all? im much better thanx to the yucky penny sillin i had my higher english exam on tue and it still never happened yesterday i went to falkirk with my mates snowflake pam and grant frog there were children singing up the town we sat and watched them the wee lassies fancied grant i bought legal man thats not true i only had 85p 1 cent snowflake bought me legal man then we went to mcdonalds grant frog bought me my lunch and we were joined by tam, chris, duffy and beattie and we sat for an hour and a half and laughed at innocent passers by and didnt get kicked out :) then chris had to go to work he works in stationary box so the rest of us stayed in mcdonalds and watched and waited till he had to clean the windows then tam (useless info: tam used to own tbwtas) ran across the street and grabbed him from behind chris got a fright and got window cleaning stuff over a few ppl :) then grant gave me a fright and i stood back onto a child which proceeded to start crying- loudly :/ then we walked through the howgate for no reason and the dreamcast was free in woollies so duffy challenged me to a game of boxing ive never played one b4 so he thought he would win so i whipped his ass 2x so have gave up then tam played me and i whipped his ass too even tho duffy tried to distract me by tickling me but i was wearing my tickle-proof jacket so it didnt work-ha! then today i was in a bad mood coz call barring was on so i couldnt call snowflake so i poened my window wide and played legal man offensively loud that cheered me up immensely :) so from me thats all time out! sweetie xox ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: I Don't Care About The Truth

The couple nearest me were behind me, or to one side, depending on how far I turned in their direction. I have called them a 'couple', but in truth 'pair' or 'duo' would do the job as amply and with more clarity, if also more ambiguity. That is to say, while they were most certainly a pair of individuals of quite opposite sexes, I have no evidence as such, no hard and fast proof, so to speak, that they were actually a 'couple' in the English sense, which if I'm not mistaken (and three decades in that country have not immunized me from the possibility of error) relates to the brand of 'coupling' practised by, or upon, locomotives. In any case, while their 'coupled' status may well have been, indeed was, unclear, to say the least - was indeed a good deal less than evident, indeed not strictly evident in any way at all - what seemed certain to me (though memory has its foibles - who among us can claim to know his own memory? - which mean among other things that even that which appeared clear at a first moment may turn out, not only to be unclear at a later date, but never to have been clear in the first instance itself, could we but recover that instance - a task whose impossibility is built, so to speak - one might even say, in the contemporary language, 'hard-wired' - into its very structure) was that they numbered two, and were travelling together (but this is to go too far; for they may have met at the café itself; or they may have been the gayest lovers and yet still made a point of *not* travelling in each other's company, only reuniting at moments of stasis, for reasons of their own, at which we can merely speculate - speculating, for instance, that their forced absence from each other's company was expressly designed to maximise the carnal voracity with which they would fall on one another at the moment of renewed accompaniment; a hypothesis, it must be said, unsupported, indeed flatly contradicted, by my own observation, as has already been indicated) - travelling together, I say, or at least enjoying one another's company at this moment itself, the span of the journey at large being understood to belong to another inquiry; and, I say, that they were indeed members of two sexes which we may (the scepticism of modern genetics notwithstanding) reasonably call diametrically opposed to one another. The young man was drinking a low mug of the local brew, to whose popularity I have already adverted. He was, I should estimate, about 5'4" in height, blue of eye, with a noticeable scar upon his right eyebrow. I found myself, during what ensued, wondering at intervals how the scar had been attained - perhaps in a motorcycle crash, or a freak shaving incident, or some form of bizarre boating accident. His pale-faced companion, sipping from what was perhaps an espresso, was clad in a black that matched her hair, which was indeed quite raven-like in hue. On my travels I have often stopped to observe the youths of the locale, and now as on many earlier occasions I felt a kind of pleasing aesthetic repose to observe a pair of young travellers so even of feature, so healthy of body, so fair on the eye - my tone will not, I trust, be taken by my reader as lascivious in any respect, but rather as tending towards that 'ideal stasis' described by the intellectualizing hero of a well-known bildungsroman published during the Great War; towards such a 'stasis', I repeat, rather than towards the 'kinetic' response also daringly outlined by the same young *philosophe*. And yet I could not avoid noting at the same moment some qualification of youth in our pair, some world-weariness perhaps, some toll of years which could be heard clanging distantly on closer inspection. Their skin was indeed just a little more pocked and lined, their eyes a little more wry, not to say jaded, than one finds in those in the true bloom of youth; and yet withal this only added, for this observer, to the charm of the pair, who seemed to combine in their very being the wisdom of lives already taken in both hands and lived, and the undying joy of unvanquished youth. It was to these pleasing wayfarers, in any case, that I could not prevent myself from listening, as I nursed a small, dark espresso of my own. (There is a tale to be told, by the by, concerning the geographical and historical variations of the concept, or more simply the term, espresso; a tale, however, to which I do not propose to subject the reader during this chapter, or perhaps indeed during this book itself.) He: Well, you know, the thing is, I actually applied to join them She: Who? H: Belle and Sebastian - you know, they lost their bass player to his other band or something, and I actually wrote to them and told them I could fill in if they were interested S: You're joking - would you have been able to play the songs? H: A lot of them are quite easy, aren't they? 'Dylan In The Movies', E, A, E, see-saw sort of stuff, just walking it up and down. I mean, I know a lot of the songs, yeah S: So what did you tell them - did you say who you were? H: Well, I said I'd been in a successful band in the early 90s and I felt my style would fit into theirs quite easily S: I don't think it would. I hope you didn't send a copy of 'Leave Them All Behind' H: No, I sent them some other stuff - stuff I've been practising on myself recently, plus some of the old tracks, the proper stuff S: 'Decay'? That had a wicked intro H: Yeah, that one, and 'Taste', I always liked 'Taste' S: Me too. We all did. We used to dance to it H: Did you? S: Yeah, it's a good thing we didn't say so at the time - you're not meant to dance to your rivals' songs, are you? H: No, that's your own songs - you're not meant to be seen dancing to your own records, that's the thing S: So what did they say? H: Nothing. I never heard back from them She laughed. Her laugh was like sunshine over the slightly dull Central European plain on which, as I have remarked, we were beached. One or two of our fellow café-dwellers looked round as if in envy at the source of amusement, or indeed, more probable, at the perfection of her laughter itself. S: Do you think they dance to their own stuff? H: B&S? Yeah, I would - I think it's quite danceable actually. But you have to come from the kind of discos we used to go to to think that S: It'd be nice if they played them and us back to back. Stop people forgetting H: I used to like dancing to that one you did really early on, it sort of stopped and started - 'Drowner'? S: 'Downer' H: But people dance to different kinds of things now - I mean, that's why they've done the new single. It's trying to make people dance S: I couldn't dance to it H: I could, it's fun S: Eugh, no... it's really contrived, it's got that beat that's meant to make people start going like Mike Myers, totally unlike anything they've done before. They should realize that people like dancing to Belle and Sebastian - *I* like dancing to Belle and Sebastian! - cos of the kind of thing they always did - you know, those swinging rhythms like 'She's Losing It' H: 'Get Me Away From Here' S: Yeah - but the least dancey thing is when people go all contrived and start adding dance beats that don't sound natural H: But that's what you did! On 'Lovelife'! S: Uhhh, no, that's not fair... that album was contrived in a different way - I mean, we may have been trying to catch up with what other people were doing, rather than making them try and do what were doing ourselves, but there aren't any dance rhythms on that record H: I mean the song, 'Lovelife' - on 'Split'. That was dancey. And there were remixes. I've got it at home, the 'Suga Bullit Remix' or something. S: Well that's just what I'm talking about - I never really wanted to release remixes like that, because you know they're the one thing that when they come on in a disco everyone's just going to go to the bar or sit down - because it sounds contrived, like it wasn't really our natural thing H: So why do it? S: Oh, I don't know - we were all young and foolish, weren't we? She laughed again. My veins raced a little. S: So that's the thing about the single, but it's not just that - the 60s thing, the retro - I mean, B&S didn't need to resort to that. We never did H: Yes, we did. S: Yeah, I suppose *you* did. She sang, in a voice which I fancied stilled the birds on the surrounding trees. S: I don't know where it comes from - I don't know where it comes from... Like, why does everyone have to end up revisiting the same bits of the past? H: But music is always deriving from the past, innit. I'd like it if people derived from us now S: And the way the girls sing, it's so prissy - they sound like the school choir - the head girls leading it H: That's how they've always sounded, though! Like on 'Mary Jo' the pianos and recorders and that are school instruments. S: But they sound really solemn, really tight-throated H: Like you and Miki S: And that Neil Hannon bit in the middle - oh, it's so disappointing - I really thought B&S were the best band since... H: Since we stopped S: Since *we* stopped! And they seem to be pissing it away H: No, I don't think, I think they're still - Excuse me, can we help you? I rose out of my fascinated reverie to realize that I was bring addressed. My eyes flickered with recognition, but the rest of my body was ill-equipped to respond to the request. For I had leaned over so far towards the pair in the course of their brief exchange that I was, I now realized, perched on the edge of my iron chair, with two fingers stretched in the other direction and still touching the table my only real means of support. I attempted to utter a polite word of greeting. It emerged as a sort of grunt. The pair stared at me with a mixture, I felt to my shame, of distaste and concern, as for an unending moment I sought to steady myself, leaning gradually back towards my own table. When this operation had been achieved with success, I nodded at the young man, grabbed at my collection of short fiction and flapped it open at random. Hey Now Children, I do hope this message finds all 1300 of you in fabulous spirits. I at the moment am procrastinating yet again. I'm taking summer classes. "Why?" you ask. I'll tell you: I'm a moron. Actually, I'm still a moron, but I just want to get ahead on classes so I can graduate on time. "Graduating on time is over-rated" I'm sure is exactly what you're saying at this moment. While it probably is indeed, it makes quite a bit of sense when you're in Buffalo, NY. As soon as you can get yourself out of here, that is the best thing you can do. Therefore, I guess I'm not totally foolish in that respect. Nonetheless, I should be studying for a Statistics quiz... or exam (whichever you prefer). Ehh, it will get done... eventually. As of late, it's come to my attention that I am incapable to listen to certain songs due to connections with past romantic interests (that obviously have ended badly due to my inability to listen those aforementioned songs). It's really quite unfortunate and annoying all at the same time. I know this sounds horrible, but unless I have something completely consuming on my mind, I cannot bring myself to listen to "Like Dylan In The Movies" due to 2 fellows that were obsessed with that song with whom I was kind-of-sort-of-not-almost-involved with. Ugh! And it's not the first time I've been avoiding certain songs for this exact reason. Shame on me, really. But you know what? I shouldn't let these ridiculous (no, I'm not bitter) boys deter me from music. They're not worthy of preventing me from not listening to good music because of their own stupidity. Oh dear, I'm not cranky, really... Oh yes! Will any Toronto Sinisterites be in attendance at the Primal Scream concert this Tuesday, the 29th of May? I should be polite and extend this to any potential Buffalo listees, but I indeed may be the only one. Yes, I shall be there. I'll be the one in black. Let me be a bit more vague, if you will. No no, I'll be sporting red boots and curly shortish blonde hair. Now, I have nothing to say about this political direction and the rebellion against vowels that Primal Scream, excuse me, PRML SCRM, has taken lately. All I want to do is have some Guiness and dance. Sinister: Much time (and space?) in my mind

Halo peeps Has anyone else thought of a conspiracy theory concerning Legal Man and its artwork? To me it suggests that B&S are unhappy with Jeepster and all the bureaucratic malarky that they impose on the band: long mixing times for the records, love affair between sleeve artist and legal man (?), big (unnecessary) expenditures on bank account, letter of contract extension dated 1998 (not to be renewed?), Katrina looming over paperwork with scissors in hand (having left Jeepster?). Is Stevie playing the part of Jeepster's legal man, with THE LOVELY Bel and Maisons wielding gun, rope and dagger behind him? Or is that just what they want us to think? Or is that just what they want us to think that they think that we think that they think that we think? I particularly like the retro globe piggy bank, and the picture frame like the ones we were forced to make at skool. But what does it all mean?!!! I like to read too much into things, makes humdrum life more melodramatic. Hopefully the artwork also suggests that Middle Distance will be the next single, but I'm only saying that because I think it's definitely a 'single', in that it's a catchy song which I got bored with after a few listens. I recently acquired Lordy Antony and Pocketbook Angel, which I infinitely prefer (esp the former) Pleeeeeeese let them be the B-sides. And would it be GRAYT if Dick Flap appeared on another release, but with singing (a la Century of Fake Elvises)? Kishes Mikey Michael.x P.S. Sinister: Could I write a post for you when you're dead?

arrrggghhhhhhhhh......(long drawn out scream which slowly gets quieter and quieter until it dissappears completely and there is a muffled thump despite the suppossition that your screaming is louder than the sound of you hitting the bottom of ravine/chasm or in my case a huge inbox, 97 unread messages of which are sinister and only 4 of which are from other people and one of which is from jeepster). How do people find the time to read all their sinister mail? How do people then find the time to write anything? And go out? And do the shopping? And eat? And... Envy emanates from this post towards all the people who know someone who likes belle and sebastian. I only know one who is prepared to listen to them but frankly, he prefers deftones who do have a very good name but are not my cup of tea. He kind of wanted to go to the london gig but he can't because it's friday and he's jewish so it looks like i'm going on my own. Damn! i hate going to gigs on my own, it's somewhat similar to riding on city buses for a hobby. On a totally different point which is complete list abuse (I think) but needs saying, I saw a kid today on the southbank. She was about 6 and had been given rollerskates for her birthday or something and was testing them out for the first time with her Mum and Dad. Every time she fell over, she just got up again and laughed. At first her parents were a bit worried but when she just kept getting up and laughing, they started laughing too. Soon, all three were in hysterics and it had started getting very windy so this kid kept on getting blown along by the wind. She just stood there and started moving until a gust came along and she would fall over. It just cheered me up so much and I hoped the mental image might do the same for you. But it probably won't and Honey will mail me to say that I shouldn't abuse the list and so will everyone else it will generally be very upsetting. Sinister: The Spinisterine Manifesto.....

The Spinisterines recently held a press conference session to announce their new Spinister Sinister Manifesto. Though the details are sketchy, rumors are that there was a lot of strawberry tea, lemon cookies, and crochters present. In the near future, there will be a transcript of the full event and a streamed video so that you can see what happened and better understand the context of some of their responses. So far, only Gleek the Space Monkey has reported on the event and since he only twitters there isn't much to go on.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Laura: Requests to don shawls and join and list crush votes have amassed all in the name of SPINISTER SINISTER. Even future cabana boy Stuart Murdoch was heard pleading, "I don't care about anything Bobbie Gilespie has to say; all I care about is Velocity Girl!" Obviously, it is time to address the fact that everyone and their favorite crooner wants to be a Spinisterine. You thought we were hiding. You thought we were letting ourselves rust away while letting the strawberry tea go cold. Our rocking chairs and crochet hooks have been gathering dust as we have prepared to MANIFEST ourselves to the world. A SPECTRE IS HAUNTING SINISTER - the spectre of Spinisterines. All the Powers of old have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Honey and list members, nursery tots and #sinister chatters, milk maids and crocheters, papercut stars and authors. *Velocity Girl shoves Laura out of the limelight and begins to list.. As she does, Laura begins to pick imaginary lint off of her shirt and make mental commentaries to herself* Velocity Girl: 1. What shall all the spinisterine powers do? Spinisterism is an emotional tension that raises the sword of inconsequence... (To herself) Laura: I thought arms raised swords. What are we Jedi Knights? Do we have the force? Somehow I doubt Vel is going around murmuring ^ÓSize matters not.^Ô ^ÓDo or do not. There is no try.^Ô ^ÓI^Òd rather kiss a wookie!^Ô Or maybe she does... hmmm. Velocity Girl: 3. Spinisterines stand for life without lies and necessities that derive from the human need against loneliness - every pore of our spinisterine body opposes to this necessity. *Laura is still to busy chuckling at the mental image of Vel kissing a wookie.* Velocity Girl: 4. Our purpose is that we have no purpose... Laura: *randomly sings to herself* I'd rather have two boys at twenty-two each than one guy at forty-four! Velocity Girl: 5. Spinisterine is a virgin virus - logic that is ratified by the senses is an organic disease... (To Herself) Laura: "Virgin Virus". Finally, some alliteration! Sadly, there hasn't been any mention of books..... Wait, virgin?!?!? *Laura begins to pay attention* Velocity Girl: Herewith, these are the tenets of the SPINISTERINE MANIFESTO.
