Today was the day when I remembered why I hate Pennsylvania. For those of you who do not know my exact living situation (shame on you), my parents live in PA, and I live in New York, and I'm now living at home until school thankfully starts up again and whisks me away to the big city. For some reason, my parents decided to repaint my room this summer, probably so they can turn it into some sort of anti-Julie office or study or something once they're sure I'm gone for good. But anyway, in preparation, I cleaned my closet today. I discovered some VERY disturbing things. For one, I own more than 10 pairs of Doctor Martens. My lord! Next, from 1992/93 I subscribed to Propaganda, the U2 fan magazine. I was 13 at the time and can not account for my fanatacism, although my first ever rock concert was the U2 Zoo Tv Outdoor Broadcast tour at Veteran's Stadium in Philly on Sept. 3, 1992. Seven days before my 13th birthday. Obviously, it had quite an impact. Also, I own a number of Depeche Mode t shirts that is nearly unfathomable. Now, I clearly remember my alternateen phase, from around the age of 13 til 15 (which explains the Docs, but not the sheer multitude of them), but I must have somehow blocked the softcore goth phase out. Wait, now that I think about it, I do remember on occasion wearing black eyeliner and dark lipstick at the same time. I think I need to go to rock and roll confession. Forgive me, listees, for I have sinned. Speaking of sins, I also discovered a wee booklet in my sweater (jumper) drawer today which tells me how to Examine My Conscience. It instructs me what to confess, how to confess, and how to save my soul from the fiery depths of hell. My, the mortal sins I've committed. Perhaps you should all examine your consciences as well, just so you're sure you're not in cahoots with Satan unwillingly. The Sixth and Ninth Commandments DID YOU WILLINGLY TAKE PLEASURE IN USING IMPURE WORDS? DID YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO IMPURE TALK? DID YOU TAKE PLEASURE IN SINGING IMPURE SONGS? DID YOU TAKE PLEASURE IN TOUCHING YOURSELF OR OTHERS IN AN IMPURE MANNER, OR LET OTHERS DO SO TO ME? DID I WANT IMPURE THOUGHTS, AND DID I TAKE PLEASURE IN THEM? Apparently, if you ever sang along with I Don't Love Anyone or you even THOUGHT about why Judy was a dickslap, you're SCREWED. Get thee to a confessional! It's also a mortal sin to get "helplessly drunk", fyi. Another bit of pro-Christian propaganda I found today was a book called Hell's Bells, The Dangers Of Rock n Roll. I remember the exact circumstances by which I acquired this book. When I was 15 I had my first grown-up crush on this boy named Andrew. I met him at camp, and when we went back to our respective states of residence we'd send eachother mix tapes and silly gifts. I sent him a Keroppi notepad, and he sent me Hell's Bells. This book is actually the "study guide" to a video series, so a lot of it doesn't make much sense, but the general loathing of the author towards music in general shines through. The best thing about it is the quotes at the beginning of each section, because in their eagerness to prove how eeeevil music is, they managed to quote some great bands. The Jesus and Mary Chain were sent straight from Satan, as were the Who, the Ramones, the Smiths, the Velvet Underground, The The, David Bowie. And New Kids On The Block...there's a whole section at the end of the book called "But what about NKOTB?", and it instructs you to fill in the name of any other band invading the hearts of preteen girls as time goes by. And there's a marvelous quote about a NKOTB concert that I can only PRAY (to my pagan gods) will be an accurate description of this summer's Belle & Sebastian dates..."It's as if the concert stage were a reef in some Sargasso Sea of raging teenage hormones." Sigh! Okay, now I feel it necessary to express my love for Laura Llew who proclaimed me her list member of the week even though I wasn't subscribed to Sinister at the time. I love you Laura!! Btw, on a Twin Peaks note, Megan and I watched The Trial with Kyle Maclachlan whilst in Russia and although Kyle is a hottie as ever, I much prefer him as Agent Cooper rather than Josef K. Mostly because The Trial was dead fucking boring. Also, Martin Robinson is my hero for buying me a copy of Legal Man, as I went to the only record store in this God-forsaken town that even carries Matador the other day and the Belle & Sebastian section was EMPTY. Aaaaargh. I've placed wee pictures of you both on my pagan altar. Last time I posted I was accused of name dropping, so I'll stop now. Um, and speaking of The Who, what's UP with this fucked up SUV commercial with the polo playing people and Baba O'Riley in the background??? I have read with despair the letters that have been printed on the matter so far, and without exception, although well written and well meaning, they have been portrayed by the sarky and snide replies to be the lunatic ravings of swamp-slime on the level of Old Manics Fans. And this is a basic problem. When you write to the NME, you have to accept that they will ALWAYS have the last word, and that they can twist and edit your words to fit their purpose (I speak from experience here). Add to this the fact that the NME has been getting increasingly frustrated that B&S refuse to play the game and be one of 'their' bands, (and believe me, they would give their grandmothers for that), I believe there has been a concious editorial descision to send B&S the same way as the Manics, and countless other bands who have somehow found disfavour with them. I honestly think the best thing we can do is to disengage from the whole circus. Let them say what they want, if we don't make fools of ourselves on Angst, then we aren't fuelling the fire. Now it's all much more complicated of course coz they're a BAND like and have jamming sessions and work things out over two years of studio experimentation. I think 'Legal Man' is mostly Stevie's work, but Mick did pop up in Papercuts (www.papercuts.co.uk) to say "I wrote the middle eight, mum". I'm sure they all mucked in for a bit of communal dickslap, by the sounds of things. And of course, 'Winter Wooksie' is Stuart David's. As for the new album, word on the street is that poor old Stevie isn't to be held principally responsible for 'Beyond the Pale'. No, it's all ISOBEL's fault, Miss. But before everyone forms a lynch mob, we should see things from both sides now: 'Family Twee', you see, had its 'controversial' lyrics penned by Stuart himself. * Lyrics to Legal Man. Hello, God, I've posted to this list about a sum total of 2 times. First time round, no-one noticed apart from ("all I care about is") Velocity Girl ("two-and-a-half minutes of jangly guitar"). Thanks Vel, I'd join the spinisterines were it not for the fact that I have, err, too many moving parts. Oh and, I'm not single - siggghhhh. I suppose I should stick to the archetypal boring format. I might as well say hello to that ever so sinister Alan Burns, the wonderful Jennifer Hodgson, and the sublime Kathryn Dutton. Na, I guess I won't since that is list abuse. Sinister (which everyone knows is etymologically linked to the Meek for "peddles smut and bludgeons society with the twee manifesto") is where I'd like to live. I still don't know the link for the Sinister Village. Can someone send me it, please? Mandatory smut content: my unlucky girlfriend is coming up on the 15th of June to the sunny climes of Ayrshire. Great F!U!N. "Smut content?!" Kathryn queries. Err, well B&S content then - since we'll probably spend the sojourn soundtracked by FISHYCLAP. No. 15 in the charts for Legal Man. Hmm, someone said "change is good; progression is good". Change that to "change for the better is good; retrogression is bad". Retro Retro Retro. Hmmm, I still love the track - though it does feel like Stevie's bastard child. It's a more Stevie oriented single (or at least it feels that way.) With Struan lurking ('cos that's what he does, lurks) in the shadows. I reckon Struan should start a solo side-project 'cos, as, that lovely Mr Dastoor once said, "it's his songs we fell in love with." To be honest, the other band members' songs always seem rather flaccid when placed next to Struan's "wondertrax" (© Nick Dastoor). That's another point. Sinister: One Day, Paranoia, One Day....

Dear Sinister kids, my Sexual Intellectuals, How is everyone on the list who has gained roots and flourished well since I last posted, in the yeah 65BC or something? I'd like to say a big um, "word up" to Cheles post thanking the fragrant Miss Honey for running this super list which makes it possible for people to like, ....gulp..."do it", and stuff...and congrats to Amanda and Steve, who now they have tied the knot, now can enjoy the full promise of nuptial rites. Super! Almost makes me want to get married meself. But white is SO not my colour. Legal Man got to number nine in the Pop Charts! What a to do. Whatever its knockers (knockers, heehee) may say about it, its vocals aren't exactly the grandest things in the world. The "Maisonettes" (ahahaha how funny, the Maisonettes, don't you see thats a clever name for a bunch for girl singers one of which who has an arse the size of... I needn't finish this joke need I) are ever so slightly weak, and as for Stevie, well bless. I like his voice. He's a honey. The thing is that for a song which starts out with the promise of being The Best Dancing Song in the world ever*, should have some kinda soul sireeen on it, or some honey tonsiled silky smooth suave lothario, crooning and wailing and hitting such high notes that all the boys have to cross their legs? As much as I love Stuart... well I'll let him off. Anyway I was going to say I'm glad the vocals are a little "messy" shall we say, as I get to sing along and sound good, instead of like a twat. Which I am not. I am good and super. Honest. But it's all about Pop isn't it? After seeing off my friend for quite probably GOOD at the train station the other day, I bimbled across Waterloo bridge. I had been humming Legal Spam all day, and suddenly I realised why - when the sun started to shine brightly, and I played the game known in my circles, as "Dodge The Capitalist Be-Suited Bastards, 67 Points Extra If One Of Them Turns Out To Be Adrian Evans"...and... what can I say my friends. Get out of the city, and into the sunshine! It was a Pop Moment, and it worked. Didn't someone say it was all about moments? They have said it was all about Momus, actually. I wouldn't know if they were right or not about that. All I know about Momus is that he has an eyepatch thing, and I saw him at Other Music in NYC, did I? Or was that someone else. Ooh, speaking of NYC, I hope Megan and Julie from NYC are back there safe and sound after their globe-trotting boy-snogging adventures recently. Cos I'm nice like that.
