I got another phone call from Jerry Singer on Friday, but I wasn't in. He's certainly persistant. Thanks to everyone who emailed me about my dilemma; it seems that everyone's a closet inventor. I was thinking about how stupid I am, phoning up for things just because they're free, when I remembered that my Dad had told me once, how he'd done something similar when he was twelve, and nearly ended up joining the army. He'd been on a school trip to an army assualt course, and had eagerly filled in a form to join their Youth Recruits, thinking it would be like the Dennis the Menace club and he'd receive a membership card and badges and pictures of sweaty young men in uniforms. Instead, he'd unwittingly signed up to the army for five years and they kept sending officers around to his house, trying to conscript him. I've just been into town, thinking that I might go to the bank, then as I stepped from the bus I remembered it's a Bank Holiday. So I went into a shop and read the letters in the NME. There was a quite intelligent letter defending B+S by a chap with the rather excellent name, Trevor. The NME's angry reply was that Trevor was too "intellectual", and used lots of big words, like these bastard Belle and Sebastian fans do. So it seems that their main argument against Belle and Sebastian is that they're not stupid enough, which seems like a rubbish argument to me. Out of protest, I read the paper in the shop, and put it back on the newspaper stand. This is a good way to protest. In fact I've been doing it for years, even when I haven't really got anything to protest about. I like to think of myself as being one of the old skool protesters. Give me Papercuts any day. Someone told me last night, that when she first met me she thought I was gay. Apparently, this is because "you take care of your appearance". "Which makes me gay?." "Of course." Actually I think I'm the only person who doesn't think I'm gay, so maybe I am. Even my Dad used to think so, but I think he just used to hope it was true so I wouldn't go and join the army. Jeepster have put sound samples from FishyFlaps on their website, if you haven't heard any of it yet, and I saw today that Virgin already have it on their listening post. Although I wouldn't bother with the one in Nottingham because it doesn't work very well, and sounds like the headphones are made from a couple of tin cans and bootlaces. Only a week to go now. I'm getting quite excited. Sinister: Dung Beetles Do It Backwards

That Blake's Seven adult content mailing list sounds good, doesn't it? I bet it's all stuff like "Phwoooar! I wouldn't mind slipping K-9 a length!", things like that. There are dung beetles near our new house, but the lack of high quality dung producers such as elephants and wildebeest means they have to make do with dog poo. They push it along with their hind legs, perhaps to avoid the overpowering stench. I wasn't really expecting dung beetles. Which bloke from Ally McBeal looks like Stuart? Please make reference to plotlines, because I don't know their names, apart from Ally's flatmate, Reenie. I still haven't heard "Legal Man" but I have read the NME. Seemed quite reasonable to me, I wouldn't read too much into it if I were you. That's Katrina in that photo, you know. How come Beans isn't laughing? Did Rolling Rock pay to have their beer on the table? No one seems to be drinking it. And so on and so forth. I haven't really got anything to add, except I think people should write to the NME if they feel strongly enough, regardless of whether or not it gets a sarcastic reply. At least it will give the peculiarly deranged fanbase something to talk about. Speaking of which, congratulations Amanda and Steve, and a hearty slap on the back for Big Arthur Bergman too. Also belated congratulations to Adrian and his Kate for getting each other pregnant. I thought it was very nice to hear from Fluffy Sarah. ich bins...the subject line is this song by smokey, alan horneŽs band oscar wilde played it always in their gigs. i read it from this ŽpopŽmag,thereŽs this postcard article in it,they interview alan horne, edwyn, norman blake etc. i listened to joy division theyŽre just so good, i made a list of cds i need to buy, i came up with 8, but thereŽs more. i watched ŽsmokeŽtwice this weekend(iŽve got in on tape).iŽd really like to work in that auggieŽs cigar store. i thought iŽd buy a camera, and start taking pictures. next year iŽm just going to courses that i like, this year i was supposed to take 8 courses in swedish, but i only took 3, and got satisfactory from all, and now i should do them again, but i wonŽt. iŽm around the same age as isobel,when i graduate iŽll probably be 30, i donŽt care though, cos iŽd be glad if i could work in some small record store or in a book store. i donŽt want responsibilities, cos then thereŽs much pressure and i get hideous bellyache. i thought iŽd start doing some painting and drawing (try to draw a frog and a fox :)), i bought this herb bible so iŽm going to start growing herbs, all kinds of mints. thanks to everyone who wrote:),i think youŽre all so sweet and cuddly and lovely, i just wish you were here or iŽd be there where you are, so you could give me a hug when iŽm feeling triste and iŽd give you a hug when youŽre feeling sad. weŽd do fine. but iŽm glad youŽre out there,somewhere.iŽm going to create a special folder for your mails, so i can read them next time iŽm feeling blue. i was thinking getting something by orange juice and josef k.,but iŽve never heard anything by them what do they sound like? which cd should i get? and i want to get something by felt,so which album is the best or your favourite? iŽll go like auggie says:Žslow down,kidsŽ au revoir love and hugs!!! Sinister: a long-winded justification of an ealier e-mail to this list.

Colin Anderson obviously didn't like my comment "Steven Wells will be first against the wall when the revolution comes!" comment, so I thought I'd clarify. I don't give a damn whether people like Belle & Sebastian. I really don't care. I'm not snobbish enought to say I want them to be mine, and don't want anyone else liking them, nor am I silly enough to think that a few plays of "Legal Man" will make them stars. My beef with Swells was the incredibly bad way he handled the so-called "interview" with Stuart. (And remember folks .... Swells has defended The Bluetones ... so getting high and mighty about B&S's apolitical nature is a little rich.) Stuart called Swells to try and justify the comments he raised at the press conference. He did so coherently, and Mr Wells was not really able to have a proper dig at him while he was speaking, and instead used the sneaky ploy of making his final point well after Stuart had hung up and gone off to do something creative and interesting. It's the journalistic equilivant of a stab to the back, and in direct contrast to just how *nice* Staurt has been in his recent interviews. (Defending Fran from Travis, saying fairly nice things about STEPS, all things considered, etc. etc.) Basically, I think that Swells, and the NME, feel threatened because Belle & Sebastian doesn't *need* the NME. Recently the music press in general, and NME in particular, have taken great delight in building up and tearing down bands. Look at both Gay Dad and Ultrasound as bands who were lauded and then torn into all in the space of about six months. It's difficult for bands to avoid playing the game, however, as the NME and Melody Maker are the most comprehensive gig guides, and pretty much the only major network for getting *any* publicity as an unsigned band. Belle & Sebastian have done things a little differently though. They have a reasonably large fanbase who expand, to a large extent, by word of mouth. There has been little hype (until recently), yet TBWTAS did remarkably well in the album charts when it was released, and has one on to sell a fair amount of copies. People have fallen in love with B&S without B&S really having to play the game - do interviews, photoshoots etc. They have a good website, their fans find out information about them through their labels mailing list, and can buy their albums directly from Jeepster. Much as Mr Wells seems to be attacking Stuart for not taking more of a stand, I get the feeling the real reason is that he wants to feel important as a "critic" or part of the "social consciousness" or something. And pandering to bands like Primal Scream makes him feel like he's doing something worthwhile by dragging along on their coat tails. Good for Primal Scream. I agree with about half of what Bobby says, but just saying I agree with them doesn't make *me* a revolutionary. I guess my question for Steven Wells is, just what do *you* do to make a difference? My feelings today are very high, nexy class I have an art lesson in which i have to hand an assignment in... I don't think I have put every thing I can into the assignment... Sinister: american pernod with your older sister

hello sinister. today i was feeling restless. i managed to organise my restlessness into going for a walk round the grassy bit near my house, listening to a tape someone kindly made me, called 'ducks on a pond' / 'ships at sea'. this is a good thing to do i think cos your thoughts can wander. but i was still restless but in a different way. not really a bad way. just my thoughts would get so far and then kind of flick back, like in a loop. also i was thinking about something i read that said it's good if you can do something great/beautiful or whatever, and be glad about it, but not be any more (or less) glad than if it had been done by someone else. and i was thinking that it works the other way too: if someone else does something good, it's very hard not to be jealous, but if they do it in a way that seems like they don't care it was them who did it, it just had to be done, then you don't feel so jealous even (especially) if it is very very good. like when there's a really good band or author, it goes beyond making you jealous, you're just happy that it's there at all. the trouble was, the place i was walking is pretty small cos i was too lazy to walk to a proper park, so i was kind of going round in circles a bit. in the end i went on a swing in the playground (i wasn't trying to be twee - it was getting quite late by then so there was no-one to see me) and my tape was still playing and i could see across the hills. then i stopped thinking so much and it was better. kaytee x ps. the subject line is my mis-hearing of the boy with the arab strap. that is how you spell the drink isn't it, with a silent d? +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. hello...oh there you are, this is my second official post. i am feeling very unsure of myself at this moment. right. the reason i am writing. oh yes. living in the states now, and being an artist myself i have begun to receive andy warhol's interview magazine. well anyway...in the new issue, if anyone cares, is a right up of fyhcywlap. i shall now transcribe the "sound advice" for all of you lucky readers: "Belle and Sebastian create chamber-pop that's as subtle as a whisper and smart as a whip-and sometimes just as painful. On their fourth album, the Scottish indie-rockers rummage through the obsolete sonic detritus of past musical eras, with each song layered with harpsichords, kitsch-pop strings, and spaghetti-western horns plucked right out of an Ennio Morricone soundtrack.
