hello. i've been trying very hard not to post because i feel guilty when i do, but things kept coming so in the end i decided i had to. i've had 2 dreams (not one but 2) about the band in the past week, well one was about the band and one was about the list. in the first dream, it was stuart's birthday, and everyone on the list donated some money to buy him some rare vinyl, which then had to be hidden somewhere in his house by a crack force of elite sinisterines (i'm not really sure why i was there). the second dream i don't remember much about, except that there was a house party and everyone was dancing to there's too much love. and because of these dreams, i had to tell my therapist about b&s and "what they mean to me", which sounds like an essay you'd do in school. i love the album. i don't care what anyone else says. and i agree that chalet lines is a bit of a dodgy subject for stuart to tackle, but you know, it could be much worse lyrically than it is. also, the phrase "my time", i don't know any girls who use this, but in the pulp song razzmatazz there's the line "and i know that your sister's missed her time again this month". it's probably a bloke phrase for when they want to say something they don't like. i'm extremely worried by the monkey theme, maybe they're regressing. and let's face it, monkeys only mean one thing - ian brown. we can't let that happen. um, i don't really like posting long messages, but you've probably already skipped to delete by now. pip pip, FB X *********************************** chickclick.com http://www.chickclick.com girl sites that don't fake it. http://www.chickmail.com sign up for your free email. http://www.chickshops.com boutique shopping from chickclick.com *********************************** +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. I can obviously appreciate how "Me And A Gun" is a very harrowing account of real pain felt by a woman; but a man trying to relate a story like that? it's just sick. sorry, but that's how I feel. and I love Stuart as a lyricist. this time, though, is the only time I'll accuse him of self-indulgence and I have to believe that it's as if he's thinking 'I'm "Stuart Murdoch", Copyright, Registered Trademark, etc, therefore I can get away with singing something like this'. sorry once more to anyone who's genuinely been touched and moved by this song, but this is my personal ideology and belief on the matter: I won't be listening to it again. anyway, rant over!! some other thoughts, then, as the album starts to grow on me with each listen.... Nice Day For A Sulk. I love it; it's absolute classic Belle & Sebastian, could've fit on IYFS, and to my ears it's the most upbeat song on the album, and one of my personal favourites. that song arriving in my life at the start of a rainy, gloomy summer with a rollercoaster love-life just suits my whole situation perfectly. Beyond The Sunrise. I see it's been causing a fair bit of controversy over the fact it's such an obvious departure in style!! I was trying to place where I'd heard anything like that before, and then someone on the list mentioned Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood, and it made perfect sense. Anyone who's heard the two of them duetting on "Sand" ('young woman, share your fire with me...') or Lee's woozy, boozy half-remembered reminisces on "Summer Wine" will appreciate where this is coming from. And as I'm already deeply entrenched in Johnny Cash, Nick Cave & Leonard Cohen, the vocal doesn't grate with me at all. A really good grower for me; wasn't sure first couple of listens, but now I love it. I Fought In A War. Stuart dusts off his big book of Arthur Lee chord progressions once more, and fashions another beautiful, sweepy ballad. One thing though; it's strikes me that B&S could end up with a serious self-parody/cliche problem on their hands: that's four albums in a row that've all started off with a plaintive wee Stuart vocal; can we have a bit of punchy bombast at the start of the next album, just for a change?? Great song though, with some really touching lyrical moments. Waiting For The Moon To Rise: I thought this was Isobel!! it's absolutely gorgeous as a first offering from Sarah though. Don't Leave The Light On Baby: the harmonies towards the end are the most beautiful I've ever heard on any Belle & Sebastian song. lots of audible shades of my favourite Velvet Underground album, the untitled third one. The Wrong Girl: yeah, it is a bit country-influenced...which is great for me, though (you should see some of the corners of my CD collection that I tend to hid from most of my friends!!) I realise I haven't mentioned every single song on the album, but this is all the stuff that's on my mind about it at this stage. One more I'd like to mention; my undisputed favourite, Family Tree. The lyrics bring back so many memories of me getting kicked out of Higher Maths lectures for daydreaming, then going to the Music Dept and writing some songs, that it's almost unbearably poignant *sniff*; and it's got a gorgeous melody, and perfect for Isobel's voice. pleeeease don't take this post the wrong way, anybody, it's just a load of opinions. I've read everyone elses thoughts too, and considered them. this is the second time I've been involved in a fans' mailing list for a band or artist when a new album comes out (other time was just last month for Neil Young's "Silver & Gold") and both times have been totally fascinating, to see the different opinions of so many people when they're all exposed to a new album at roughly the same time. Before I bought FYHCYWLAP (yes, I sadly had to *buy* it), my B&S hating brother said "so, is it going to be crap then?" and I said "no, it's going to be better that The Boy With The Arab Strap, but not as good as Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister". And what do you know, I was right. Although I think I'll kick up a bit of controversy by saying that I Fought In A War is the best opener they've done. Yes, better than The State I Am In. The bit where the bass goes duh duh duh duh before the band join in... genius. Oh yeah, and the orchestration. Well, it could be crap... but it isn't. And why? Because they're not using the same orchestra as Embrace, they're using a good one. And so the strings sound good. I've always thought that the strings on DD#2 were a bit crap. *That's* OTT, the new ones are just beautiful. My God, the tone of this email isn't at all like me. Sorry, I don't know what came over me. I've been outside a lot, and I think the fresh air might have affected my brain. Sinister: All Hail Geddes!

All hail Chris Geddes! Well, since Ol' Grumpy (© Screaming Mad Cassorotto) is throwing in his tuppence, I might as well submit a Review. Maybe we can collate them, find the average stance, and create a definitive super-review. I might as well adopt a Lester Bangs-esque manner of song-by-song, personal reflective journalese. "I Fought In A War" A brave title for an opening track. The likes of which hasn't been found since the proud proclamation that The Queen Is Dead. The opening track is just as rousing as The Smiths' sprawling epic. At first glance a pre-emptory strike against Swells ("I left my friends behind me/To go looking for the NME"). This (and I agree with you here Alan, mate) is the best Love song by B&S since Dog On Wheels. Arthur Lee: Struan salutes you. With lines as heart-achingly straight to the point as "I bet you're making shells back for a steady boy to wear", we have a fantastic opener. No The State I Am In - but no Hello (What's The Story remember that one, kids?) "The Model" I agree with Ol' Grumpy when he says he's not traced exactly what Struan means yet - but you get the feeling that, pervasive in the song, Struan knows exactly what he's singing. Nine out of Ten. Lisa must be one of Struan's longest running school girls. Found as early as Struan's early bands (Lisa Helps The Blind). She, I'm afraid to say, is my favourite of Stuart's school girls. Anyone else who had a repertoire of 'characters', if you will, you would reckon would get sick of singing their praises. You'd probably get sick of them singing as well. Not Struan though. Not under written, not over written, Just Right. "Beyond The Sunrise" The first curve ball. Ignore the lyrics, sixth form poetry, surely can't be a Struan composition. It stinks of Isobel (I use stink in the nicest possible way, of course.) The instrumentation though, beautifully realised, putting the sin in sinister. Struan wailing in the background, with his iridescent, hollow breathe is haunting. As harrowing as Robin Jenkins' Just Duffy - not an easy read. The bell chiming in the background, complimented by the drunkard Cohen-aping Stevie culminates in an effect that affects. If I'm mad to like it - I'm mad. Not sure about the acoustic guitar by numbers, though. It may just a comedy of country cliches, but I like it. "Waiting For The Moon To Rise" The best song The Field Mice never wrote. A good first effort - but a hammer to hit people with for those folk who feel the New Democracy does more bad than good. I know change is good, progression is good - but after BTS, an I Could Be Dreaming would have gone down lovely. I suppose it's less pressure on Struan. I still really like this song - but it's not as affecting as the song that could fill it's place perfectly. Shh, say it softly for we don't want the Belles to think we're indignant: The Loneliness of The Middle Distance Runner. We should be happy with what we get, though, eh? Teehee. "Don't Leave The Light On Baby" Reveals the real star of the new democracy. Please stand up one Chris Geddes. The harpsichord on The Model, the sullen piano driven pain of The Chalet Lines, the rousing, raucous diatribic wurlitzer of Legal Man. Chrissy boy is showing himself to be quite the affecting star. He did look unwell at the press conference, though. Bless him. "His ship came in/I'm standing on the harbour wall". It never fails you, does it? "The Wrong Girl" One journalist described it as "Legal Man's spiritual third cousin". Enough said, there then. "The Chalet Lines" You either hate it or loathe it seems. Well, it's hard to say you love a song by a man singing in the first person about a cliched rape. But I really, well, I can't say I like it either can, I? I have absolutely no problems with this song - barr the fact that it seems there is a little lack of heart in the vocal. It's the same old sad school girls, the same old bus journeys, isn't it? "Her face was just a smear on the pane"!!!! This song leaves you cold?!?!?! Fuck sake! "He raped me in the chalet lines". Oh yeh, it's that well trodden cliché about Butlins rape. Everyone's entitled to an opinion I guess. Don't listen to it if you don't want to simple as that. I wish you could get Mr Wall Mart to understand that concept. "Nice Day For A Sulk" Jumped up B-Side. It feels like a B-Side with ideas above its station. I don't like this song, no no no! "Woman's Realm" "The obligatory B&S rave up"? Teehee. B&S and rave in the same sentence, I like that. I do understand what Mr Dastoor says when he gets the feeling that Struan's on auto-pilot. There are lyrics which make absolutely no etymological sense whatever, no logical structure and no meaning when deconstructed using standard English rules - but when you hear them you know EXACTLY what the singer means. Take, for example, the song "Astral Weeks" by Van Morrison: "If I ventured in the slipstream, where immobile steel rims crack and the ditch in the back road stops lay me down in silence easy, to be born again Showing pictures on the walls Standing with a look of avarice Talking to Huddie Ledbetter." What the hell do these lyrics mean? Nothing, nada, zilch, rien. But when Van sings them, in the context of the song - you get the feeling. Back to the point. With Women's Realm you don't get this. You get brilliant individual, Stu at his best lyrics ("It would take a left-wing Robin Hood to pay for schoo A song or two, a boy a girl a rendezvous") but they don't sit well together. I feel. This is still one of the highlights of the album, though. A real grate, and great, song. "Family Tree" Grate, twee, wilfully twee, but grate (and great)! "I'd rather be fat then be confused" just sums up the essence of B&S in a affecting epigram. The idea that image counts nothing when you're happy, and doing something meaningful. "There's Too Much Love" See what Dastoor said - 'cos he said it all. Thanks Nick. J When, if ever, B&S release a Best Of it will require two discs, no doubt. But looking upon this line-up there'll only be a handful from this release. A four out of five album from a 6 out of five band. I agree that it feels decidedly less organic. I think to sum up the two halves of B&S album recording career (Tigermilk & Sinister then TWATTYBUS & FELCHYPLOP) you have to look to Mum (the cover stars) "Yesterday was dramatic - today was ok" Y'know? Hello I know the last thing you want to read is my opinion, but I'll inflict it upon you anyway. fyhcywlap is no tigermilk, but i still adore it. let's face it, if they put out another tigermilk or iyfs we would complain that they're not giving us anything new. we should remember this. i adore this album regardless of flaws. it's the first b&s album i've bought because i wanted to listen to good music, and not because i wanted to defy the music world. it's finally just fantabulous music to me and not some malformed mantra. i'm excited. someone mentioned the change is in the number of additional musicians. couldn't agree more that this is the case and this album seems less exclusive. however, all the songs sound so rich that I won't complain. besides, one of my all-time faves is "get me away from here" but i always found the instrumentation to be hollow and sparse. this is a nice, though flawed, change. only word on sunrise: sounds like leonard cohen was in a good mood when he met gordon lightfoot in a dark alley and nana mouskouri was on-hand to mediate. very bizarre but i like the "ahs" in between verses. i'm done manhattans and cuba libras to you all! _____________________________________________________________ Get email for your site ---> http://www.everyone.net +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: I'm leaving you, baby

hello everyone. well, this might just be the last post from me for a while, as I am heading homewards for a bit where internet access is nil at the moment, cos my brother's monitor died an untimely death. Maybe he shouldn't try and fix it with a hammer. As for the new album debate. Well, heres my two pence worth. (Please forward all cheques for two pence, made payable to idleberry, to Idleberry, 3 Idle Avenue, Berrycity, Idleland ID3 1BY) I like it. I didn't mind Sinister, but it wasn't as great as everyone says it was. I mean, yes, I liked some of the songs, like Dylan, but I didn't like Me and The Major. Tigermilk is my personal favourite. The new album just seems to be B+S, taking a step forward, advancing, rather than retreating, in their creativeness. I like to imagine it, like reading through little stories you write through your life, like those you write when you were 12, those you wrote when you were 15, those you wrote at 18, and those you write in adulthood. All very good pieces indeed, for their time, and the instance that was going on. But I do like the new album. I rate it higher than If your feeling sinister *cowers as she imagines a hundred angry sinisterians disargeeing with her at an intorable level of volume*, and Bwtas. In the meantime, I'm packing my things at the moment, filling up more boxes than I actually have and wondering how it shall all fit into the car. I ripped off my B+S blind picture (I chopped up a photocopy of the tigermilk album cover and tapedit to the slats of my blind) and I've taken down my Munch posters. I got my insurance sorted out for new specs, After the exaqms... doh! and I have to write a 5000 word essay this summer for next year. Its a creative writing piece, that I have chosen (I like creative writing, I'm better at it than translations and writing about novels and history), and I need to send in my outline soon as well. I just need to think of a story. Maybe anyone here has any ideas? And it has to be in Norwegian, but I thought i'd write it in English first. I have a few ideas, based on thoughts I have daily, but I also think I'd like to write something completly abstact from my usual style. Maybe I'll write a twee story about sinister village. Anyway, look after each other, no fighting, and I'll speak to you all sometime later in the future. Sinister: More than words

Oh cripes, I see a diatribe coming on... I've already privately emailed someone to say that I was in a pissy mood when I wrote my review, and emphasised the bad bits of the new album. "I Fought in a War" is a grate song, not a GRATE song. I really like it, again small letters. But I think I need to emphasise a point I should have given more importance to, and which is a very important point indeed when it comes to Belle and Sebastian. When I hear songs, especially when they're new to me, I listen almost entirely to (or rather I *hear*) the music. By music, I mean the way the rhythms, melodies, harmonies, walls-of-sound etc. interplay, which is picked up and appreciated by the musicky bit of my brain. It takes me a while to incorporate the effect of the lyrical content - a bit like learning the piano, starting with one finger, then one hand, and then, after a while, mastering the full range of possibilities. In practice, what this means is that, for me, a song like Blueboy's "Remember Me" can have as powerful an immediate effect as "Seeing other people". I know full well this doesn't happen to everybody. I wouldn't expect it to. But while Belle and Sebastian songs have on several occasions made me cry, it's been after a very long time knowing and loving them, when the words really begin to broach the walls of my psyche. The process is only just beginning with Fishyflaps; I have welled up during "The Chalet Lines", which I recognise is a very obvious choice, but maybe its very blatantness is the only reason it has managed to have an emotional effect with words. However, even when I get to know the words as well as the music, it's always the music by which a song lives or dies. Put the words of Slow Graffiti into the mouth of that cunt from the Lighthouse Family, it would still be a beautiful and poetic libretto, but you can bet your bottom dollar the tune would still be dreadful. Essentially, the implications regarding FYHCYWLAP are that because of the subtle beauty and depth of (most of) Struan's lyrics, it's going to take me a long time before I can full appreciate the words, and therefore the song as an entity. So at present I am mostly focussing on the music. I Fought in a War is indeed a beautiful song, but can anyone honestly say they had no idea how it was going to develop the first time they heard it? Reading this back to myself, I see that this is really a very self-indulgent letter, describing how the mind of one amongst a thousand interprets the music that forms our common ground. Sorry about that. Hi all. I am now going to tell my opinion of the new album, so if you don't want to read that sort of thing, at least I've given you a warning <grin> I'm sure Mr. Dastoor will find it interesting... ------------------ *I Fought In A War* I must admit to having spoiled this track for myself. After I heard it on that French Radio webcast someone posted about, I got it from Napster and listened to it *loads*. It's an amazing song, and it would have been better if I'd waited <smiles> I love the little 'twang twang twang' shadows-esque guitar at the third verse and the trumpet is superb. Score: 10/10 Fave line: "It stretched before me infinitely" *The Model* Very pick-me-up. It brings a smile to my face <smiles> I think this wouldn't have been out of place on Tigermilk. I love Stuart David's little one-line bits too - they give the song a nice shape. Score: 9/10 Fave line: "The picture was a masterpiece of comic timing" *Beyond The Sunrise* I'm going to go against the grain here. I will admit that I hated it at first, but after a few more listens, it's growing on me. It's undoubtedly the weakest song on the album, but that doesn't make it total crap. I like Bel's voice on it, it's a very nice contrast to Stevie's 'deeper than deep' vocals. Score: 6(ish)/10 Fave line: "Joseph was travelling with a heavy load" *Waiting For The Moon To Rise* Wow! Why has Sarah been held back from us before now - the woman's voice is pure sex. I *love* this song to bits. It reminds me of something that I can't quite get, and when I realise what, I'll kick myself to 'Frisco bay and back. Score: 9 and a half/10 Fave line: "like the spring, and the winter, and the morning" *Don't Leave The Light On Baby* A star. The best song on the album and possibly my favourite B&S song ever. This is just perfect all the way through. I can't find a single fault with this song. If they ever release a single from an album, it should be this or Wrong Girl. An absolute classic. Score: 11/10 Fave line: everything, esp the harmonics. *The Wrong Girl* I first heard this song on Radio 1's Bowlie broadcast and it booked a permanant place in my heart. Another wonderful song - simply faboo. Only flaw is that it's not long enough. This would get a top ten place as a single though - I'm sure of it. Score: 9/10 Fave line: "I went looking for my darling" *The Chalet Lines* Very very moving song. I appreceiate that it's not everyone's taste, but it appeals to the Radiohead fan in me (ie miserable bastard mode). It's almost scary hearing wee Stu swear. I actually find this to be kind of creepy, something about it makes me shiver. Score: 8/10 Fave line: you can't really have a fave line in this one... *Nice Day For A Sulk* I like this. A little bit of nonsense now and again is good for the soul. It's not exactly the deepest song ever, but it at least picks you up again after Chalet Lines stamps on your head. Score: 7/10 Fave line: "Bobby drank too much and fell in the Clyde" (could this be Glasgow's own Bobby Gillespie they do refer to? Probably not, but it'd be cool if it was <grin>) *Women's Realm* Another classic, I think. I just love everything about this song - it makes my head bob like a moshing chicken. Wonderful. I'm going to stop talking about it and listen to it again. Score: 10/10 Fave line: "A boy a girl a rendezvous" *Family Tree* Hmm. I dunno. I haven't fully made my mind up about this song. I mean, it's a good song, and I love Bel's voice, but I can't help think it'd be better suited to the Waves' next album. I would love to hear Stuart Murdoch sing this though, just for the novelty value if nothing else. Score: 7/10 Fave line: "I want poetry and music and some laughs" *There's Too Much Love* Very nice. Very nice indeed. I especially like when the violins smack in at certain bits. It does prove that wee Stu is a class singer, doesn't it? <smiles> Score: 8 and a half/10 Fave line: "I'm honest, brutal and afraid of yooooooooooou" <grin> Well, that's it. I was pleased to see our hot boys and girls on Top Of The Pops the other day, at least they looked like they were having a laugh which is more than you can say for Chrissie Hynde these days. The monkey was a welcome sight as well, as monkeys always are. Just a shame that it wasn't wearing a fez. Well I'm listening to the new LP as I write, (a tenner from Sainsburys -a snip) and I am liking it kids. My favourites are pretty much along the lines of everyone elses so far, 'I Fought In A War' being the standout for me. And 'Don't Leave The Light On Baby'. As for 'Beyond The Sunrise', well I'm undecided. I am as big a fan of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra as the next man, but I sort of feel like I'd rather just listen to 'Lee and Nancy' than a song that sounds a bit like one of theirs. On the whole, though, I love the LP and reckon it was worth the wait. Speaking of which, I saw that film last night. You know, a bunch of Americans go into space and it all goes wrong. Based on a true story. 'Armageddon', that's the one. It was shit.
