Hello good people, Its about time that I chucked my 2p worth into the ring. Are they twins, or is it a mirror? Look very carefully at where the girl on the left's index finger is against the white swirl on the book. The girl on the right's index finger is against the *black* swirl. A-ha! Do I have the detective ability of Poirot or what? Or it could just be the angle the photo was taken at... As for the live webchat on MTV - I think this was the equivalent of speaking to the band in an overcrowded townie disco. It was frustrating to say the least. I don't use chat very often so I don't know whether this is commonplace, but at least on jeepster chat you get a 15 second pause between refreshes to gather your thoughts. Chart position - Looking at this rationally, when Tigermilk was re-released, it came in at number 13 in the UK (if I remember correctly). I'm assuming that more of us *SAD FANS* will have bought flappyclap immediately, because most of us had Tigermilk on tape already. Sinister: wrong girl vid!!!:)

Hey sinisterinies!:) Very long time no write but at long last an email containing *actual* B&S content! 'Cos not only have I just obtained "FYHCYLLAP", I've just seen the vid for "Wrong Girl"!!! that's right, "Rage" (to all non-Aussie listees, it's a late-night music videothon) just showed it on Friday night and it's grate! Norman Blake out of the always lovely Teenies played Stevie's dad and it was hilarious that at his "birth" stevie came out fully formed. It's really a funny video in a sad sort of way. Stevie looks hapless and gormless throughout (not a bad thing since obviously he meant to look like). The girls he tries to woo look mostly non-plussed and how many of us guys can relate to that? The part where the rest of B&S (including a brief cameo by the ever gorgeous Stuart Murdoch) come to bash him up is a treat also. As for the album, I like it and LOVE parts of it. "Beyond Sunrise" is terrible though. I've never heard a really weak B&S song till now-the male vocal is just awful-sorry! While Isobel astonished me with her Gentle Waves album (especially the breath-taking "a chapter in the life of Mathiew"), her songs and particularly her amazingly fey and twee voice pale in comparison to our Stuart's. "I Fought in A War" is dramatic and a very powerful opener. "Don't Leave the light on baby" is a wonderful slow-burner of rare beauty while of course "Chalet Lines" shows B&S in a totally different light with them creeping into the stark and incredibly moving Tori Amos territory of "Me and A Gun". As for the rest, it's slowly growing on me (though I've loved "wrong girl" ever since it was called "wrong love") but not sure if it matches the stellar heights of the other albums. Hmmm have to wait and see:) anyway thanx for bearing with my musings and all the best to err everyone! seeya folks Kin Woo "What's the deal? Hello all, I have not been able to buy the new album yet. But the anticipation is wonderful. It gives me something to look forward to when I get paid on Friday. Does that make me a bit sad? Well I just know it won't be a disappointment. Hmm... well a little while ago I bought a B&S bus shirt. This was very silly of me. So what if every article of clothing I own is black? I will wear this shirt damit!!! * No ofcourse all my friends won't give me a hard time for donning a orange bus- them being all twee and just loving Belle and Sebastian.* we all know how this story ends...... is there a soul out there who want's it ? let me know. ( I would gladly exchange it for a joke I could use one today) Thanks to all of you who have posted about the delgados. Fucking incredible album. It reminds me of my bloody valentine's glider in a way. It has that sound that swoops out of no where and goes right through you. Of course with the delgados it is a lot simpler like one wave hitting you at a time instead of three or four different ones. Just great. Sorry for the lack of content. You all are wonderful. Alix. No, it's not funny. Um, hi, I feel a bit moved to write today, because people have been saying things, and because I'm happy that from today, if I should choose to do so, I never have to read a word of Shakespeare again. Anyway. I'd like to say a few things about the album. I refrained from writing a review because I frankly much prefer reading posts about how people's days are going rather than posts about B&S, but he're my tuppence worth. Beyond The Sunrise does, at first, seem to mutter 'skip me', but after listening to it a not inconsiderable number of times... it's actually quite good isn't it? Even if it does sound like they're taking the piss a bit. It's nice, OK? On the other hand, Nice Day For A Sulk... well, for a band that claims they're not twee... it's a bit twee isn't it? Far too twee to be straight after The Chalet Lines, in my humble opinion. It's not bad as such, just there. Everything else is great, particularly Sarah's song. I agree wholeheartedly with what Mr Gilmer said, which is handy because I don't have to type it all again. And on that note, I think I'll go and take some pictures. Good day. Well, those two girls on the cover of the new album certainly look like nutters to me. They're from Iceland, aren't they? They're holding books called "I Fought in a War" which set me to thinking - has Iceland ever been involved in a war? I saw the album yesterday, but I didn't buy it. I chose to buy "Super Breaks Volume 2" instead, attracted by the prospect of listening to "Heaven and Hell is on Earth" by 20th Century Steel Band. Had I known that Mr Chris gets a credit, things would have been different. Perhaps Mr Chris is the mystery growler on "Beyond the Sunrise"? When bands cancel tours due to exhaustion, it usually means either TOO MUCH JUNKIE BUSINESS or POOR TICKET SALES. However, in this case, I think we should give Stu D the benefit of the doubt. Bear in mind that he has been touring America with his highly demanding wife. She's probably been nagging him non-stop, "Oh go on Stuart, write another song about ME! I know, you could write one about how it's really hot and I need some Robinson's Barley Water with icecubes in it but I'm too tired to get it for myself and so you go and get it for me because you love me so much, don't you... DON'T YOU? You could call it "Summer Sooskie" and we could release it as an A side instead of a B side like those ungrateful bastards in B&S and maybe we could do one for Spring where I'm covered in frogspawn and one for Autumn where I'm buried in scrunchy leaves and it would be like the Four Seasons by Nigel Kennedy only about me, me, ME!" Who wouldn't be exhausted after that? Mind you, he's not going to get much of a rest by not touring, is he? Poor bloke. But seriously, I don't think he hates the fans. I once wrote to him about how to buy Looper t-shirts (obvioulsy this was before I'd heard the music) and he wrote back calling me an "old menace". I don't know what brought that on, I'm sure, but I thought it was quite nice anyway. Carsmile Steve released the bats by asking about bands who steadfastly refuse to release singles off albums. Well Steve, the Buzzcocks steadfastly refused to release singles off their albums, but their record company steadfastly did it anyway. Led Zep also refused to release singles off their albums until quite recently, despite an offer from Simon Bates to personally make them the Christmas number one circa 1991. I think they released singles in America though. I'm sure there are thousands of others. Over to Big Dave, the list's only known UK skiffle boom survivor... Good morning kiddiewinks and what a fine morning it is too, the sun is trying to shine, the yellow album is safely in my 'puter (and will probably stay there all day, or until my workmates kill me) and all is getting better with the world. Does anyone else get the feeling that this album is going to go in at quite a stratospheric chart place?? I bought it yesterday from the new HMV on Oxford street (which is crap, bye the way, don't go there) and on the way home I was carefully reading the words to see where I'd mis-heard stuff previously (how can you hear "she met another blind kid at a fancy dress" as she lay a blanket down on the grass"????) and, when I looked up there were four other people in my little bit of the carriage doing exactly the same thing, including the girl sat next to me! Personally I think the album's brilliant, it's not my favourite at the moment but that could change (it usually does) and I must say that there's too much love is one of the best songs I've heard. Anyway, I've gotta get back to work and dancing around on my seat to the poppier songs, oh yeah, and thinking about whether I should emigrate to the land of Oz. Sinister: Millions of lights in a grid, yet the streets seem so lonely

Hello Sinister People, I have the new album, and i love it. Ok it is not the best one...but i love it, maybe it is because i love the sound of an electric piano, but probably not. My mom liked it alot, which is really no suprise. I have read good reviews for sinister...mostly from places i would expect good reviews. The Onion (http://www.theonion.com) has probably one of the few really good reviews, plus the fake news stories are worth reading. I also have this feeling the American music press is not as cynical towards B&S as the British music press, I have yet to figure out why. I have setteed into Chicago and have realized how little I fit into the city...The grid if ligths used to be a haven, now it just represents boredom. OH Well. A few months and I move to Vermont. I just have a bad case of wanderlust, nothing against Chicago. I just witnessed a marriage, and it was weird, and kinda tacky, and reminded me why I generally stay away from churches. The good thing was i had the pleasure of talking to one of my best friends, which is always good. But that is all what that wedding amounted to since the reception was not very exciting, no silly drunk people dancing, which is the best part of weddings. So I drove the 3 hours back to chicago to face the grid once again, and realize how hard it is to make freinds when you are only going to be in a city for two months. so yes. hello. been a while from me...but since th' album came out officially today (even though, as someone mentioned, its been available in toronto since thrusday) i thought i'd go on and on about it. <and on> so yes. um...ok...here's the problem with the new record....i feel it is missing magic. thats it. um, and no i don't hate any of it except for beyond the sunrise, its not really the songs themselves that are the problem. i put the record on and bop about and make breakfast and do things while listening to it and i feel good like you should when music is good to bop around to. so the record feels good but not *good*. is that making sense? but the first time i heard belle and sebastian it was after my friend liane hyped them up to me (this was right after arab strap came out) and i went to the record store and put both their records on the counter (iyfs cost a whopping 25 dollars!) and asked to listen to them. from the first bars of IYFS i had a big smile on my face and felt very good. thinking that it was too good to be true i tracked through the whole thing and really regretted not having lots of money. the same thing happened with Arab strap, so i bought that for a relatively light 16 dollars and went home happy. this time i put on the new record expecting the now customary instant 3 bar smile and then nothing....piffle. snort. plech. second song... umm not yet no...no magic. ouch. so maybe i've changed. maybe i'm not the person i was. maybe prolonged exposure to previous belle and sebastian records or blonde redhead has altered me beyond the magic zone of the new record. who knows. its just not working instantly like i feel belle and sebastian records should (and have up till now). so i am the voice of dissent. the one guy in the choir who sings off tune, but hey. its just not that special. its really good, but its not *special*. or at least i don't feel that it is. also i get a massive scott walker vibe off this record. much more so that their previous record. something about the unsubstantiated drama of all the string hits going "da-da!" in the middle of songs, where previously they just sort of ambled about langourously. it rubs me a bit the wrong way. it just reeks of scott 4. can't you even hear scott belting out "I FOUGHT IN A WAAAAAAAAAARRRRR" with his insane overwrought vibrato going on and everything. although, thankfully the scott walker infulence hasn't resulted in them writting songs about bergman films. gawd. the last thing we need is a b&s concept album based on 'persona'. or an isobel song about the passion of anna where she sings about all the dead animals. humph. s t e v e n k a d o +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: "...a young boy takes a feather out of his mouth"

Hullo to all Sinister Siblings, both the newborns fresh from the nursery and those who've been about for awhile. I called Harmony House in Brighton (a smallish town in Michigan near where I live) which is the closest record shop to me at the moment this morning at around eleven: "Hi, do you happen to have the new Belle and Sebastian album?" "Lemme check, I know we got a few in...(pause)" "Oh, I'm sorry. We just sold out of them" "...yer kidding...how many copies did you get?" "...oh..four or five it looks likes" So B&S sold four or five album's in my Lil' Michigan town in an hour this morning. Which is good, though it forced me to drive up to East Lansing to get the new album. Suffice to say it was worth the drive. *Fold Your Hands Child* *****Album review coming up***Spoiler Space******This means you******* It might not be as good as Tigermilk but it's hooked me even more than BWTAS did upon first listen, and that was the album that got me infatuated with B&S in the first place. I was unsure how much I'd care for the openning track, but "I Fought in a War" suprised me. It's a solid B&S standard even though the subject matter didn't seem to be run of the mill fare for Stuart. It's a great song though. "The Model" could be one of my favorites, or so I thought at first listen. By the time I had listened to the whole album there were two or three other songs fighting for that spot. It's a nice song with some great piano work and strong lyrics from Stuart. It makes me want to dance in the same way "BWTAS" and "I Spent the Summer Wasting" did. "Beyond the Sunrise" is the only clunker for me. It doesn't do anything for me. However, out of eleven songs on an album only having one that I actively dislike is pretty damn good. "Waiting for the Moon to Rise"....fucking brilliant...no, I mean that. Where has Sarah been hiding all this time? I'm not sure if she penned the song or just sang it but this floored me. Now, as much as I've never had anything bad to say about Isobel (and she does a fine job on the latter songs on the album) I am stunned we have not heard Sarah before this. It's an amazing song with great lyrics supported by Sarah's voice which is *perfect* for the song and captures the mood exactly. "Don't Leave the Light on Baby"- Actually hit the fast forward key on this the first two times I listened to the album, thought better about it the next time round and gave it a few proper listens which has caused me to warm up to it quite a bit. It's a nice enough song I suppose and shows again the range that B&S are capable of. I'm starting to like it more and more. "The Wrong Girl"- Nice enough song, nothing special though. I almost would have rather had "Lord Anthony" in its place and "Loneliness of the Middle Distance Runner" in "Beyond the Sunrise"'s place. For that matter I wouldn't have minded seeing "Pocketbook Angel" make it onto the album. Perhaps the singles though, eh? "The Chalet Lines"...christ, this is a beautiful song. Stuart's voice is perfect in it, sounding tired and resentful and just...perfect. Between the lyrics and the mood created by his voice it is an astonishing song of painful beauty and one of the most moving songs I've heard from B&S. It's brilliant, it's as simple as that. "Nice Day for a Sulk" has the same problem that "Slow Graffiti" has for me. his voice goes a bit to high for my tastes. It's a nice enough song I guess, but it seems out of place just after "Chalet lines". All in all I don't really have any feelings one way or the other about it. "Women's Realm" suprised me, Isobel does a good job on it and I ended up liking it a bit more than I thought I would based on others comments. Actually, I liked it quite a bit and I have to say I think Isobel actually sounds very good on it. I've never had a problem with her singing for the most part, but on this song it seems as if her voice truely clicks and in my opinion she sounds better than she has before. "Family Tree" is another pleasent suprise. I really like Isobel on backing vocals, and I don't mind her all that much but I've never been overly fond of her taking lead vocals. The Gentle Waves album failed to impress me because her voice didn't hold me through the entire album, I tired of it. However, her work on this album is very good and her voice is used to good advantage and so I ended up liking "Family Tree" far more than I thought I would. Well done!! "There's Too Much Love" is another of my favorites. I thought the album would go out on a low key tune along the lines of "Rollercoaster Ride", instead we get another song that makes me want to dance. It's a great album ender and a wonderful song. That's it then. I think the album is much stronger than BWTAS and thus has slid into place as my favorite album from our heroes. It's a strong album that shows growth from TBWTAS but is without a doubt heir to Tigermilk, and though I was dissapointed in a couple of songs and perhaps the ordering of the songs I think it's a great effort and a solid, enojoyable listen.
