hi everyone: i was out stalking elephants so i had quietly left the ranks but i am now back. and in a puddle. but what a lovely puddle it is! and i in my yellow slicka! okay, today is the beginning of what will be periodic emails on the Lovely Thing that Happened Today. Sort of Pollyanna-esque, or maybe even, hopefully L.M. Montgomery-like, but shall we see? the Lovely Thing That Happened Today Someone brought biscottis today, and they were lovely and just right. I dipped them in my tea (4 T sugar, 4 T of half and half) and everything was right with the world, for the moment. Sinister: saying words that have oh-so-clearly been said, so long ago...

well, there, I've gone and done it. I thought it would be forever before I finally decided to use/abuse my newfound voice on sinister; I dunno what inspired me to do it, but it looks like I've done it. which brings me to the problem of just what I should fill this message with. likely more of the inanity that fills my mind twenty-four hours a day. first I may as well inform the list of my place of residence, which is in the faraway great wilderness of canada, in stratford ontario. I am seventeen, but the only time I ever read seventeen magazine is when I want to do the quizzes. I like quizzes of any kind, even if they provide me with no kind of useful information about myself whatsoever and are silly and possibly evil. I think I usually end up with something like "in-check chick", but that's only because I lie about my insecurity. if I didn't I would probably be a "screwed-up senorita" or something like that. provided I continued to lie about my gender as well. anyhoo, this is a tangent. I have been reading this discussion about politics and hmming and hawing, but even though I probably shouldn't say anything I will say this (and I *know* this has been said before): I, like a lot of people, look at the election and see a tribute to a poor system; but I think it would be a *lot* better if people didn't worry about who they thought was going to win, and simply voted for the candidate they really wanted. I mean, after all, if you *knew* who was going to win, then it wouldn't be a democracy, and miracles do happen. perhaps I'm being naive, but I think doing otherwise is just contributing to the poorness of the system. anyway, that's my rant. someone asked about why the band were associated with tweeness; it has always seemed to me that it has little to do with their sound or struan's voice (although these may contribute to it) but just about everything to do with the lyrics. the nature and 'location' of the tweeness isn't always simple, either. take We Rule The School for example. for me, at first glance, I thought I was going to be ill. oh, this is ridiculously over-the-top twee, I thought. but then I realized that the surface tweeness wasn't the prime tweeness, the surface tweeness complemented the music in a complex relation which made for a twee whole song. oh my, that was an odd tangent to go off on. anyway, I have little more to say, and this seems like and odd place to end this not very interesting and extreeeemely wordy message, but there it is, I'm ending it right about now +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Jumbo jet vignettes to y'all for being so great! My spidey senses just tingled and assured me that yesterday evening, in a quiet, bluish-green part of the city, the following event occurred: puffy-haired man, possibly trained as.. a mercenary, threw a bomb right out the cargo hold of a lost woodland ambulance. Then, an older man reluctantly cried, "Brrravo!" in a Siberian accent.. it gets blurry from then on, somebody maybe warbling, "He ain't heavy, he's just confused." Time for another spidery check-up, I think, because ignorance and spiders should of course be given a second chance in Pop, as a wise person once said. Or was that a Yiddish saying? Lawrence from Felt was interviewed in Select a while ago, and his evocative cheekbones were bound to touch upon the subject of his most famous follower, sooner or later at least.. if anyone's interested: You must be aware of Stuart Murdoch wearing a Felt T-shirt on stage. "Yeah, I thought it was great, because people always come up to me and tell me how much they like Felt, and people like Death In Vegas drop our name in print, but it was so nice for someone to really stick their neck out - particularly as Belle & Sebastian are a really good band. I think Stuart Murdoch is a better song writer than I've ever been." Have you ever met him? "Yeah, it was funny, because I was just sitting in the ICA bar one afternoon and this guy I know came in. He told me how the Tindersticks were playing the ICA the next night and how the support band were huge fans of Felt. So I went to the show and it was really odd because Stuart Murdoch was changing some of the lyrics to Felt lyrics. I met him afterwards in the bar and he was saying, 'I don't know if you noticed, but I was fitting in Felt lyrics.' I'd certainly noticed." Personally, I love that last thing he says and like to endow it with a kind of reflective tone. Thanks to Dave for posting the Lord Anthony MP3, it's a bit crackly, yet to this first-time listener it was audible enough to inspire some dugong-like internet research, whereupon I found this site, and a song called "Swarm Me": http://www.ireggae.com/anthonyb/swarmme1.htm Here is an excerpt (taken for my purposes and thus wholly unrepresentative!) to highlight some striking similarities in theme to the B&S song. Being a sixth-former is fun, I've decided. Only the sixth form and remove is mixed gender at my school, so it's kinda disconcerting that suddenly there are a bunch of GURLS who I've never even seen appearing in all my classes, but still. I have Tolstoy's great grand-daughter in my English class, and a girl possibly called Sarah who is the nicer-looking identical twin sister (Fishyclap stylee) of The One Everyone Fancies From Brookside. Who is also in our SuperDuperExtraSmartEightGCSEA*sOrMoreScholarshipHouse and seems to have an IQ of about 400. She likes abstract jazz. She will be single for the next two years, I am sure. Many thanks to David, Ken & Gordon for filling some of the many gaps in my memories of Sunday after my reckless grape/grain mixing experiments (Baaaad hangover). There was definitely a pub involved - oh yeah and the greatest-number-of-damp-grate-pop-kids-that-can-be-wedged-under-one-umbrella record attempt. Fantastic! Massive props to all the lovely people who were there - especially those lovely people to whom I now owe drinks. I also managed to stretch the limits of my alcohol autopilot and successfully navigate the various trains and fiendish streets across 80 miles to get home. Unfortunately my train passed through Guildford just in time to pick up a load of pissed up townies saying things like "Fuck!", "Oi!", "Weeeyyggghhh!" and "You gave me a black eye you c***!". I don't know why they are called such, but many years ago a Flea Market came to our town and sold loads of broken action figures for 30p each. My mates brother purchased loads of these grrreat toys, and hence has been known as 'Flea' ever since. Flea's mate got a job in a fruit and veg a couple of years ago and after a weeks work the recession-hit greengrocer claimed he could not afford to pay the lad, but would instead give him the value of his wages in food. His mom wasn't best pleased when he showed up with tonnes of ripe fruit instead of cash. It's a good job that his wages weren't paid directly into his account as cash-machines cannot dispense pineapples. Just lately the cash machines I use have enough trouble giving me cash. A couple of weeks ago I got soaked in London and on the way home I read the front of someone's Evening Standard. The main headline was "F.O. TO RESCUE HOSTAGES 'They've done nothing sinister', says minister." Subvert normality. Someone else said: "Who needs cloning when one can have TopShop?" Our audience said: Why stop at TopShop? Who needs cloning when one can have McDonalds, Burger King, Gap, Yates, Bar Coast, HMV, Starbucks, Coffee Republic etc. in every town in England. "They" have cloned one town and put it all over the country, and eventually the world. I wonder which town was the original sell out? I don't know what happened to the Flea market though. Sinister: Daily ravings

I'm back for my daily ravings and stupid questions. Stupid question 1) My friend told me he didn't understand why B&S are associated with tweeness. At first I couldn't think of an answer, but then I said it was a combination of Stu M's voice and their sound. I guess that's right, is it? He also asked me why I want to dress twee, and I couldn't give him a good answer. I don't know why he asked, he dresses twee also! Eventually I said because I like screwing with the masses, and since I dressed in all black and such last year, it would be an interesting change. That seemed to satisfy him. At which point we were chased by an apparently rabid stray dog and then shot at by some kids in a van with pellet guns. They had lousy aim though, filthy hoodlums! Anyone who lives in suburbia knows about the wannabe inner city kids that drive around with the bass blasting in their cars. Buggers wouldn't last a day in the real city. The people in the ghetto are all trying to get out but these arses are trying to get in. I swear if I went insane there would be a lot of dead people. Stupid question 2) Does anyone know anything more on that Monica person who sings on LLPJ. I just heard it for the first time the other day and was surprised when I heard a different voice (I hadn't read the liner notes yet). Anyway, the LLPJ set is grate. Well, I'm off to Pennsylvania this weekend for some lakeside fun with a few friends. I'm hoping the temperature is cool so I can wear my new sweaters. star wars monopoly is deadly... or was it the smithicks??? not sure... i finally didn't lose playing a board game, i was boba fett so i had to do well... the bf won though... with 10, 000 empirial credits... ever lost an argument b/c you couldn't back it up properly... when calling someone a bigot, one should have a solid argument... well, he is a bigot, just the rest of my complaint was crap the picnics have sounded loverly, i wish i was on sinister when i was in engerland last summer... i was travelling everywhere with our fave lil'band though, the countryside outside of colchester is even prettier with a great cd...i was riding around on the back of a motorbike with twattybus in my discman... ahhh...now i miss my little cousin... k...i found a place for a picnic in toronto... and since dame diana is back and debs should be back soon... unless someone has tied her up and won't let her go...
