Well, I've been here in Virginia for a month and not a single Virginian on this list has contacted me. North Carolinians, on the other hand have been lovely and pleasant people. Which is really too bad considering Mr. Pennington's rumors of B&S shirt wielding Virginians. So I know they exist. They just dont love me. But that's all right because I will shortly be returning to Portland, OR where I belong. I've been corresponding with newcomer to PDX, Mr. Preston, and I've decided that we should have some sort of picnic or other such event to welcome him and show him around town. That and I desperately need to meet more non-Reedie Portlanders for my own sanity. So I expect more Portlanders to contact me than Virginians did. Because P-town is cool like dat. Or something. Get in touch, yo. What else? I might as well go through all of those messages I've been saving up in my "Sinister" folder for the past month that seemed to be begging for a response when I read them: To Ms. Jes Re: Underwire bras- You know you need them when you can stick a pencil under your boob and it stays there. But having not seen your breastessess, size may not be your problem. If the underwire isn't staying in place you need to a) make sure the bra fits right- go to your local department store and have that scary old lady with cold hands and the tape measure around her neck measure you up good. b) make sure you have a good quality bra that wont fall apart easily and c) handwash your bras so the wire doesn't get messed up in the washer and dryer. My mom told me that you should always take good care of your boobs. To Mr.White Re: not getting a job- here's my thought. In England they train you on a certain path that they expect you to follow and don't leave room for deciding you want to do other things with your life. Or maybe Im just bitter about the educational system in Britain and England in general. To Mr. Frantial Re: groupies- I've always had the same problem with people doing that sort of thing. Im more of a mental groupie, too. I dont have anything to say important and I dot see the need in bothering them. They're people, too. The worst time ever for that was this March while I was in London. I met up with some American friends who had come over to see Coil and then GYBE! the following night. I really enjoyed the shows but did not need to be sitting around the Royal Festival Hall for 3 hours after each show waiting for these people to fawn over their "rock stars" (if you can consider members of either band to be such things). Made me want to puke and made me feel bad for the musicians who were just completely overwhelmed by these people flocking to them just because they're famous. Unfortunately, I had to stay around and watch because the friend I was staying with had a major crush on one of the groupies we were with. Blech. Funny thing is, said friend was also disgusted and he lives with a "rock star" of stature as the bands we saw. Apparently he asked my friend to live with him because he didn't care that he was famous. I hope that didn't count as name dropping. "My friend lives with a rock star. so nyah" Hmmm... maybe Im getting too neurotic again. Maybe Im an anti-groupie-snob? To Mr. n|ck g Re: fey- your suggestion made me think of a time about 2 or 3 months ago. I was out with some friends around town and two of them were fighting over the definition of "fey." (one thought it meant whimsical and fairy like, the other thought it meant dark and warlike). So off we all trotted to the Woolworth's down the road and looked it up. Neither were happy, of course, in that they were both wrong and right at the same time. Each one thought they had won. So I didn't say anything. But the moral of the story is, people in real life do use the dictionary. Or maybe just losers like us. Oh my this is getting lengthy. But I have new things to talk about, such as: Cars- I love them. I got one Monday in fact! It's terribly exciting! While I am a firm believer in public transportation, there are just some times that a car is safer and more useful for me (e.g. getting home from ballet class taking 25 minutes rather than 1.5 hours with creepy transfer places at night, etc). I got a 1999 Ford Contour SE (better known as the Mondeo to you Europeans), which is a family sort of car, but a car (and a nice one at it) none the less. Speaking of new cars, how fucking rad are the PT Cruisers? I remember seeing them on Speedvision over Xmas, but now they're everywhere- even here in conservative VA! So far Ive seen them in eggplant, silver, red, black, white and navy. They look best in black, look horrible in red and white, and look kinda weird in the purpley color. They are just so slick. have you seen how all of the gauges in the dash have their own separate windows, like in old cars? My parents are convinced that they'll be the new Chrysler Caravan. I'm not sure of that but let me tell you, if I had 18Gs I'd get one! yes sir! Nick Drake- What's the deal with the sudden resurgence? First the VW ad and then Monday I heard one of his songs as I was flipping through channels- it was on some show on Fox around 8 or 9. Hmmm... Hurrah for Nick, but how odd! Gynecologists- Why are they just like dentists and ask you about your cat (pardon the pun) whilst taking a pap smear? At least you don't have something in your mouth but it's still rather odd. NME- Why do I read it? It always pisses me off. Not only are they wrong in their band facts 90% of the time, but they are quite often the most contradictory reviewers around. Or at least they always have separate people reviewing and scoring. That and their reviewers don't like any of the bands that I like. So why do I read it week after week? Anyone? Music- I go through these weird stages of loving it and absofuckinglutely LOVING it. Now why is it that when I'm in the latter stage I have no money to go and get what I NEED. Take for instance this week. I have $3.41 (better than the $-27.41 that I argued my way out of back up to the $3.41). Now in a couple weeks when I have money, I wont be as excited and spend my money on drinks or food or something silly like that. Grrr. greetings from soggy olde new york! consider this a belle-lettre to all those interested in the magnetic fields, which i think, from received posts, wouldn't be out of place here. lovely little evening show tonight at the tip of manhattan, castle clinton (no relation) reminding one of nothing so much as a castillian fort--about the only venue on this island to architecturally fit the mood of the gothic archie. and that worthy was in fine voice, it should be said, exhorting one and all to become like bunnie rabbits under a moon that needed poetry... alas, we could not see the moon as the clouds rolled in... claudia told us all, alluding to the trip across the pond i've seen such scintillating reviews on, how the english add adieus with a rising yelp of BYE!... steven remarked that it was odd how cellos had become so popular, also as a manner of explaining the whirlybirds making not infrequent passages over the top of the circular courtyard. (honestly, such a nice venue for his transported troubador aesthetic. about the most medieval thing around. with the exception of the present municipal government administration...) but i digress. yes. so steven's remark: "Yeah, cellos have become so popular. That's why we had to get helicopters. Last year, theremins. This year, helicopters. Next year...well, nobody will be listening..." and continued to project his delightfully remorseful baritone vocal, and even moved it into an extended tenor note that had cheers and applause one would normally affix to a guitar solo. great acoustics--not only the space (cf. gushing, ibid) but the instruments. claudia: "you'll note all the acoustic intsruments we have onstage... just so you can enjoy them as the rain and humidity detune them..." yes. the threat from new jersey was not springsteen fans but a darkening squall line, prompting nervous remarks between songs. impending gloom to match the 69 love songs of doom? sorry, but not quite. it was about ten songs into the set when steven announced, "ok. it looks like this is it, last song..." and peering out over the audience, "...ah, the umbrellas of london..." scarpering even at full speed, few escaped the downpour. so it goes. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: Back from holibyes

Hewwo, How's everyone? I've been in Spain for two weeks doing lots of odd things, so I feel like I've been away from sinister for ever. Mmm, I drank my entire bodywieght in alcohol the first night, and had my first hangover. And (when I was sober would you believe?) I went up for karaoke. I don't do much well, but I can still make middle age drunk people cry when I get a mike and an Elaine Paige song, usually. And I bought a magic hat. It's like a normal hat, but it's magic. And made from rainbows. But all the hotel kids were hard. And they laughed at my knee high socks, and my fairy wings and jumped on me. Except the little ones. Because they thought I was a real fairy and followed me about everywhere. Robin sent me a copy of unreleased B&S songs (thanks to him by the way), and, for now, Lord Anthony is my favourite song. For now. I change a lot. Wihin the confines of B&S, of course, but I'm still fickle. The new term is scarily close. In case you haven't guessed by now, school isn't a happy place for me. But I do have a brand new Barbie umberella, and hopefully a schoolbag to match (I'm going for a Barbie theme this year), and that might cheer me up, if they don't get broken in the first week. Oh, and I became a vegetarian. Which you lot probably don't care about, but I'm stuck for something to say. Somebody asked me the other day if my second name was Owl. It's not. hey all long time no... oh! the busyness, the busy busy busy-ness of it all... saw sleater-kinney at ULU last week and it kicked ASS even though there were FAR TOO MANY loser dude pervs there (honest!) compared to the times i've seen our fave ladymen (ooer?) onstage. 4 real. Fave song on FISHYAFLAPS is still "There's Too Much Love" in these parts. oh! and i think i've got my girlfriend into B&S too!!! Sinister: Bleating about Keating

Hello, I had a strange dream last night. How many posts have started like that? It didn't start off strange at all, quite mundane really, with me sitting watching the news on TV and wondering "why do we hear nothing about the Irish army?" Then the next programme came on and it was something like Equinox or Horizon, except that it was called Euroscience or some such. Cue pictures of a research station just outside Dublin and a white coated balding individual is interviewed. He tells us about a new program to *gasp* .....clone soldiers. He then shows us numerous identical troopers in khaki, all encased in Bubble Wrap and ready to be despatched to their bases and outposts. The camera pans round and we see that every one has the face of....Ronan Keating! The techy guy then takes us down the corridor, turning round and addressing the camera as he walks, explaining how the early experiments went wrong. He opens the door to a smallish room, more of a broom cupboard really, in which are stored some of the early cloning attempts. All are hideous, all look like the other members of Boyzone. Then I woke up, trembling. The meaning of this dream is not difficult to discern. No butlers, bakers or fat & skinny cows here I feel. The answer can be found in my current workplace, where I have to pack literally HUNDREDS of Ronan CDs. I look at the box. Ronan is frowning. I flip the box over, ready to pack it. Ronan grins at me. Ugh. Maybe there's a fold-out inside the box with a plethora of facial expressions. Ronan grimaces as if having a tooth pulled. Ronan raises one eyebrow quizzically. Ronan gawks at us, cross-eyed, thumbing his nose in a puerile manner. There are some FYHCYWLAP CDs on the shelf, but no-one's ordered any yet. Boo hoo! Maybe I should try to influence people's musical taste and do the odd substitution or two. The can't sack me- ha! I'm a temp. Consolation is at hand in the form of my Silly Customer Name List, growing day by day. I had a Peter Guess today. Life must be hell for him. Imagine the scene: the said Pete is at school and is caught running down the corridor. "What's your name boy?" asks a master sternly. "Guess, sir." "Boy I am in no mood to play silly games!' Calling Mrs Startup of Hounslow....why do you require *two* Ronan CDs? That's just plain greedy. I'd like to start a Terrible Assonances in Songs thread. Radio 1 gave us an example this morning.... "Remember the old days, remember the O'Jays'" warbled Kylie in 'Step Back in Time'. Groan. Possibly the worst ever is "pneumonia" and "phone yer" in 'I'll Never fall in love Again". Double groan. Maybe someone will order FYHCYWLAP this afternoon. Watch me kiss the invoice. We can but hope.... My First Post... Since I've been sporadically monitoring this list for nigh-on 4 years now, I guess it's about time I posted. Let it be known I've been into B&S since the first time I heard "Stars of track and field" on Mark n' Lard back when God was a boy (last EVER religious reference I'll make - Learn from this.) Back in those halcyon days, I was a student in Galashiels where I knew a girl called Astranova (no lie!) who claimed she lived across the road from our pet band (in Glasgow) and may have even had sexual relations with resident tub-thumper... This is the closest I have ever been to the band's genitalia and my only claim to B&S fame. Anyway, we wrote a song about Astranova - her liver had seen better days. Bygones. In recent times, my favourite post has been from "Kev" - his stories of the New Green Punto (23.7.00) have motivated me to jump on the bandwagon and feel the flies in my teeth. Cheers Kev, you're an inspiration to us all. My mate Joe is the newest and most kindred B&S fan I know. We made a deal recently when he gave me The Smiths and I gave him B&S. Fair deal? Discuss. He has a B&S claim to fame too, but I'll let him share it. For future reference or if anyone fancies a piss-up or a fig roll, I can now be found in London.... (...continuing using perverted smiths lyrics in subject lines since 04/2000) hello, strange friends, and friendly strangers. i wish i could one day send a happy mail to sinister. sadly, i think this might be one of the last ones, happy or otherwise. i'll soon have to prefix my favorite word, sinister, with an unthinkable and unwelcome verb. unsubscribe. unsubscribe sinister. sending that mail won't be easy. you see, i'm hooked. on sinister. the b&s-dreams. the witty subject lines. the imaginative e-mail addresses... all the lovely, lovely people... i'm so depressed. finland, my "glorious" country, has dropkicked me in the teeth for the last time. finland, one of the last western europe countries to succesfully avoid true democracy, has requested, nay, insisted that i should do my military service now. or rather, the twee, gun-hating, violence avoiding, bloody pacifist scum, alternative to military service. yes, lucky me, 12 months of free slave labor in some goverment sponsored place await me. conscription might not mean anything much to some of you, so let me explain. most finnish people live in a collective state of paranoia of being attacked by "an unknown threat from east". as anyone with a bit of sense know this is clearly bollocks. anyway, as we "heroically" beat the soviets off about 55 years ago, (by allying with the nazis, no less) military service and the finnish army are respected, no, revered by the average finnish person, and anyone taking the sensible pacifist alternative of civil service is, well, if not shunned by people, then at least widely disrespected. here pacifism is not even nearly as valued as patriotism... anyway, i'll be off in a month or two to "do" "my service" to my "beloved" country. bah. and the absolutely worst thing is that my parents have a huge problem with me not doing "the honorable" thing (ie. me not going to the army). my own parents! clearly i was not only born to the wrong family, but to the wrong country, maybe even the wrong planet... my only chance to avoid the dreaded civil service is to find a study place in some foreign country. bet that will be easy to do in a month or so... so that's why i'm depressed. any offers of sympathy will be gratefully accepted. - whine over - oh, and a big massive shout out to the great robert "robert smith" smith of this very list, who is an absolute star of man, even if he has a somewhat unfortunate name... so i was in london earlier. it was grate. i met some sinister people, and they were grate too. thanks, everyone. have to dash off now. keep it real, he said with a scandinavian accent. - j a n n e - p.s. this little gem of a song came up today, when i was tiredly clicking the fantastic "belle and sebastian song generator". enjoy. Hi all, I'm posting surreptitiously, from a place I hoped to never visit again. I'm temping for a couple of weeks at a book and CD warehouse in a building where I used to work nearly three years ago, in a job which was hellish. I had my reservations when the agency sent me here and it is weird, not only seeing a familiar building with unfamiliar faces, but also as the only computer with Internet access is this snazzy-looking i-mac in the reception area. How would I describe the colour scheme of this particular example of Steve Jobs' offspring? Purple doesn't quite make it. Lilac, possibly. I would urge anyone who hasn't listened to David's mp3 to do so, as "loneliness...." is a top song. It should be the next single, but will prob'ly be the next single but three. The Tigermilk re-release revisited. And why not? Good things come to.... and other cliches. What's most depressing about this job is not the fact that I'm packing loads of parcels ordered online, though it is true to say that I'm learning more about the tensile strength of brown parcel tape than I ever thought possible. It's what people are ordering that is soul destroying. Ronan Keating and the Corrs galore. A big disgrace to the Irish race. BBC Radio 1 blasts out all over this building. This is something of an admission....packing boxes is tedious, ergo musical accompaniment is required. But Destiny's Child's "Jumping jumping" wends it way further and further into my brain. And it's terrifying.
