jello my little ones. it's been so long since last we spoke but i just couldn't bite my tounge any longer after reading a particular post by a certain listee. ahem peter, he said something which just made me chirp <<<German? Pah! We British are very good at making up words too. Take "SPITFIRE" for example. Magnificent, isn't it? How could it possibly lose? Our German friends, however, chose to call their aeroplanes "MESSERSCHMITT" which means "Mister Smith". I rest my case.>>> well oi vey spare the horses. lets break this down shall we? (authors note. i could be wrong but which of you are really going to contradict me? eh? i dare yew) messer is german for knife. or sharp. that sort of thing. and schmitt well after a lot of discussion in #sinister we haven't been able to figure out anything other than smith. aunthadie says schmitt means schmitt and altavista says schmitt means schmitt so whatever a schmitt is. i hope it has a nice itme. maybe it is just smith. but wouldn't that just be horribly boring *le sigh* right well... i'll be 21 soon hurah. and i plan on spending most of my days from then on thoroughly pissed. no maybe not. it might not agree with my plumbing and medication. haha. anyhow pressies are thoroughly encouraged. and well if you don't get me something then i'll sick the baddies on you. and finally everyone feel sorry for me as i am not able to go to dallas this weekend to see yo la tengo, as my car decided to break the blasted starter is going out and my mum has this fear of me being stranded and well really so do i now too. so. send your love wine, and chocolate this way. /me thinks content: um well hehe. i have made some cute little b&s picture sticker thingys i'm so proud. and i've made one for hefner, and i've stuck them on my car. prolly the only one in oklahoma bedecked in things like that. *le sigh* oh yeah. for kicks and giggles, i go into record shops around town and ask if they have the cd fold your hands child you walk like a peasant. just to see how they react to such a title. it's especially great (or grate? i'm not sure which perhaps both? anyhow.) to watch the preppy pretty boys who got a job there because they wear hemp necklaces and birkenstocks. *belch* when i'm president dr pepper and cherry coke shall be freely offered for intravenous useage. that is all iris xoxoxox p.s. everyone should own don mcleans records. but especially the famed american pie. he is fabulous. absolutely. mhmm _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Sinister: Linguistic problems again

Hello happy listees, Well, I am a student again. I even went to class this week. I forgot that so pleasant sensation of being free half of the week, with not much to do apart from buying records and going out. I love being a student. I found a place in Barcelona and I am moving in tomorrow. This is gonna be the whole "I discover my unknown flatmates" again. There are 2 girls, they don't look really like psycho-killers but who knows? I tried to think about a word but I only came up with "range", and being part of "orange" it doesn't work really. My English vocabulary is pretty poor so I hope that is what prevents me from finding another one. Because being a single word like "orange" with no other to rhyme with would be awful, really, and I hope "orange" doesn't really stands like this on its own. Then I tried to find a lonely word with no rhyme in French but couldn't. Which leads to the conclusion that,leaving words with no rhymes, English is such an unfriendly language :) I think I am going to sit in front of the sea all evening trying to find a match to "orange". Or I won't get sleep tonight. feeling chirpy, i opened up my pink plastic electronic fortune teller cookie. i asked 'will today be a good day?' and it spelled out 'HOPELESS'. twice. and then i couldn't shut it, so it kept doing more 'answers' - 'CAN'T TELL', 'ASK ME LATER'... i didn't mind. * hello beautiful cherubs just some little words from me because i have that splendid ooh must write to sini feeling, which is a rare bird indeed - the reading i love, but the compulsion to write comes surprisingly like ooh i dunno, fog... *anyway*, rambles aside... i got in early this morning, and so have been able to relish my digest, but the *best* part is that i've got the cd player on my i-mac working, and yesterday i fiiiinallly got my own proper arab strap on cd so now i have everything on the same format (twitchy i know) - and so i snuck it on as soon as i got in and felt just dandy (i'm scared to put my stuff on the office stereo as it's quite loud and am worried everyone willtake the piss :( ) - aaargh! other people have arrived, and put the proper stereo on - my arab strap is now drowned out by horrid kid a!! bumm-er. the ever charming idleberry said: I can't get into chat rooms anymore, including sinister chat, jeepster chat and corduroy smoke chat. Grr. growls and frowns indeed, nor can i , it is rooobish. but then the equally lovely kenneth p chu said 'It would be grate that one day the Queen would say "No, Tony we are not going to rename the Houses of Parlament the Kool House of fun because it's silly" and i laughed out loud. although i was then dogged by thoughts of eviiiiil pat sharp's 'fun house' (use your body and your brain if you wanna play the game). the painting competition is just terribly exciting - and specially cause it's electronic, 'cause that means that unlike Tony Hart's 'The Gallery', we don't have to part with out pics forever. i always wanted to send stuff in, but they would say at the end of the programme 'sorry, we can't return any pictures', and i was devastated at the thought of my best pasta picture being lost foerever. hey, does anyone know where i can get some nice wallpaper for my computer screen? only i don't want sunset beaches or animals in hats etc, just something pleasing and not too distraqcting. (ooh i like that typing). On a final, rather sad note, Edward Gorey has died. Hi, this is my first mail as I haven't been on for long.* I have been worrying about an important problem for a while now and wondered if anyone could come up with a satisfactory solution. Is it insulting to describe someone with freckles as "befreckled"? Things with speckles on them are known as bespeckled so surely no one could take offence. I was also wondering what the word "goosing" meant. On the Sinister home page sending unsubscribe messages to the list itself is said to be a sin on about the same level as "goosing the Queen Mother". Clicking on the link on the word just brings up an (admittedly very charming) picture of a toy goose. Bye. *Not strictly true, this is my first mail, but I've been a member for ages, I just haven't got around to writing in until my difficulties with the above problems became unbearable. A big thanks to Idle Kristin for spurring me on to write my first post in a month - the older I get, the more I seem to be distanced from my friends, which includes all you lot. Sigh. I have had first hand experience of the non-Scottish faux-Scottish person - some of you may know who I mean... Still, it's good for a laugh when she FIGHTS to the DEATH with Ally Cook over sectarian issues inside Glaswegian f**tball. She'll have particularly appreciated last night's result... Most importantly she introduced me to BLACK PUDDING, which, as far as I know, has never been mentioned on the list* Still, it has given me the chance to go to Scotland, where I'd never been until New year's eve 1998/9, and now I think it's fab. I might even be going back soon, so lock up you, erm, pints... The other thing she said, which I have to respond to, was But he was drunk, and being male, also certain that anything he said was right, true, and 100% correct. Men do this when they are drunk... ...and women do it when they're sober ;) The late lamented Queenbeejanine once sent me an Add N to (x) computer file of some description which she claimed was pornography, but, despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to open it. Hello one and all, This is my first post, so I guess I ought to introduce myself first. My name's Annabelle, or Belle, for short. Please don't get me wrong, I didn't pick that up after I started listening to B&S, my family and friends have called me that all my life. I'm 18 from Singapore and I study art. With all the posts on language, I thought it would be an appropriate time to ask if someone could e-mail me to enlighten me about what the song 'Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son' is about. I'd really, really appreciate it. It's been bugging me for ages and no one I know understands French. Right, I will go now. Sinister: there's too much fudge

this is my first post in a while, and i'm still a bit green as far as posting here. oh well. anyway. I just got back from my fake-job, where I don't really work, I just fill in. it pays very little, but it's very easy and I can't get fired. hell, i don't work there! then I popped in on my friend closing up at the expensive chocolate store down the street. he bought me some expensive grand marnier fudge, but he gets it cheap, and i'll pay him back some time. lord, it was sweet. I didn't finish it, but that's okay cause it was half a pound to start with. now I feel ill. anyway, there was a modest mouse concert in toronto a couple weeks ago which I said I was going to try to go to. I couldn't get a ride. damn. that really drives me, because so very many people on the list have said so many good things about them. oh well. I have decided that I really really really really love belle and sebastian. I know, I know, what's to decide? but I go through phases; I'm never uninterested: I always love the band. I'm just back in my drooling phase now. anyhoo. last weekend I went to toronto for the ontario universities' fair. which was dull. my plan after that was to wander around toronto until I found soul food and a place to eat, which I did, eventually. I was getting hot and worried until I found queen street, which is more or less what I was looking for. I went into a couple record shops and immediately my blood pressure sank, much like a very heavy weight with an even heavier weight attached to the bottom of it. I decided that for a person who, as I recently discovered, is a big fan of indie music -- indie was one of those terms I used to just throw around, until I realized that the only difference between me and most big indie people is a) a lot of them are fake indie people (whereas I didn't know I was an indie person at all, though I was suspicious when I noticed I didn't like any of the music on the radio and preferred relatively unknown "independent" bands) and b) I buy very little music and don't know much about very many bands, I just listen to suggestions from reputable sources (like sinister)) -- anyway, for a person who is a big fan of indie music, I needed to actually *own* some velvet underground albums. basically the only albums (altogether) that I have are all my b&s stuff, The Queen Is Dead, and the best of the velvets. I don't have much. so I bought a copy of the velvet underground and nico. the guy looked at me like i was from another planet when I wanted to buy it on cd. he said, of people buying cds of the velvets etc. over vinyl, and of cd's of pre-80 stuff in general, and I quote, "It Burns My Ass". I liked that. I told him I would much prefer it on vinyl. what I didn't tell him was that, considering I have so few albums, I haven't had a working turntable in a long time. I was ashamed to admit it, so I didn't. but anyway, he discovered he actually didn't have a copy of it left on vinyl. I was about to buy a vinyl copy of White Light/White Heat, because that had been a dream of mine for a really long time. plus there was one of the Live 69 records. I'm not sure why I didn't buy it. that would've been better. basically I don't have a turntable right now. so I would have had to wait a while. but I bought a cd of the banana album. and you know what? now I know what he meant by "It Burns My Ass". Hearing this album on a cd really BURNS MY ASS! It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I will get a copy on vinyl as soon as I have some money (and maybe even a turntable). I ate an eggsalad sammich on a bagel at union station and went home. Sinister: Blah blah blah...

I was just soo excited about the talk of shortening words. In all of my lectures i make a personal challenge to use as many abbreviations as possible. (no wonder i have difficulty reading my notes) there are just so many words which are too long. It did especially like the concept in 1984 about destruct+ing the language (double-plus-good). It would have to say that it was one of the scareiest movies i have ever seen, that, and the truman show (remember, crappy Jim Carey movie) Movies which set out to conjure real life situations are about the scariest. I have only two days left at uni and i have my degree. But am i looking for a job, nooo i have already started a second degree, just milking this childish thing for all its worth. I must say i have great difficulty thinking of myself as an adult. Summer is coming to Australia. I'm already scared. I hate hot heat here there and every-where (sorry, got a bit carried away...it must be the pending heat) Last year i managed to escape summer for London and assorted european locations (give me ice and snow any day) everybody thought i was crazy going to europe at that time of year, but the last laugh will be mine, when they shrivel up with wrinkles and skin cancer, yeah! (this spiteful scowl will give me wrinkles). The bright and sunny aspect of summer i don't mind but it is almost impossible to enjoy as it is too hot to go out side and enjoy it. (Cruel fate, why do you mock me) I seem to be developing a persecution complex.
