hello troops. Went to the gig thing but I had to watch the performance on a telly cos I'm not at Glasgow Uni. Tracks were: Slow Graffiti I Fought In A War Too Much Love *song I couldn't hear cos this guy was shouting* The Wrong Girl Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones!!! Legal Man they were rocking out and looked a bit weedy but Stevie Jackson's 'animated' performance towards the end of The Stones number made up for it. Spoke to Isobel in the loo beforehand. I still think that girls weird. Anyway, Chris Geddes was still yum and Mick still looks about ten years old. Some things never change. Right. Got to go. Anyone else go? Anyone actually get in? these first posts must get tiresome, but please endure yet another. I've been on the list in various guises for a while, but I've been too intimidated by the cool kids to post until now. I'm a texan currently living in boston, where I know not a soul and where I thus spend all my time and money on books and records and public transportation to fill in the gaps. sometimes I think it was a mistake to come here, and then I go out walking at three in the morning humming pop songs and no one tells me I'm going to freeze to death or get mugged or that I have class in the morning, and I realize I'd be unhappy anywhere, so I might as well be 2,000 miles from almost anyone who knows anything about me. and I'm just barely young enough that I can get away with saying things like that without it being completely vomit-inducing. Sinister: giving up is hard to do

Sinister! Who would have thought that last night's pleasant pancake-party was actually a cunningly wrought trap... We were happily munching down our pancake-wrapped stir-fried veg (delicious by the way). Then our vaguely christian-leaning hosts steered the conversation around to Lent and the traditional giving- up of one of your vices for 40 days. I'm not a christian but I still give presents at Christmas so why not? My offers to give up work, bathing or dropping obscure pop references into conversations failed to impress anyone - so I was eventually persuaded to take up a challenge... exercise! Anyone who's met me knows my relationship with exercise so far has been a cold one - ever since I discovered that being cynical about fit healthy people is easier than being one. And young people don't worry about turning into wobbly lard-buckets when they're older. I'm getting older. So I have resolved to run like a bastard - at least twice a week, maybe more - until I nearly collapse for at least the next six weeks. Who knows - maybe at the next picnic I'll be the lithe, flat-bellied athlete that you always knew lurked inside the ugly fat man. I realised that I got off lightly as others around the table found themselves forced to give up chocolate, swearing, tea, porn or alcohol. I can still do all those things! It also occurred to me that this is a really good idea and can actually work when there's peer pressure involved. So is anyone else prepared to drop their unhealthy addictions or take up new healthy lifestyles for this six-week church-imposed trial period? Maybe Ken could give up red bull? Sinister: Stumble then rise on some awkward morning

Hmmm. I think perhaps it's time to stop hiding behind the curtains and announce my presence on the list. Not that I felt I had anything in particular to hide from - I just constantly find myself lurking and moping about and feel I ought to make an effort - my mum always said I could mope for England, not that that's anything to be proud of. Anyway. Here I am, sitting in my room in (currently rainy) Southampon, Hampshire (abbreviated Hants - why _is_ that?), England, sending messages down wires and across the world to people who don't even know me. Out of interest, are there many other people here from the South Coast (Southampton in particular, or even better the University)? No? Never mind. I suppose an introduction is in order - I'm 19, wear too many hats, and am bitter that I never quite made six feet. Grrrr. Will that do? Another thing: Does anyone here know how to console an inconsolable best friend who's just lost his girlfriend of 1.5 years? I am currently failing miserably, managing only to patronise and irritate. I suppose since I have failed so far to include any Belle and Sebastian content I should at least attempt a recommendation (music _almost_ counts, doesn't it?). So: everyone has to go to www.peoplesound.com, search for Carousels, and buy their album (which I believe is only available through peoplesound who I don't actually work for despite having mentioned their name twice in the same sentence. Dammit). It's great - kind of the Kinks mixed with Looper and lots of other things, only not, and they're unsigned so need lots of support. Hurrah, and suchlike. Well, I'm going to run off now, before I make myself look any more foolish than I already have done. Do I use brackets too much? I hate colds, and not sneezing. Wee gig update here, don't know if it's anything new or not. My lfatmate, Alsion, works for the GU Guardian and according to her it may be at 2pm this very afternoon, in the Williams Room in the John Mac. building. Just a rumour though. But they'd better be quick - rectorial voting closes at 5pm today. To be honest, I think Struan has been seriously mismanaged by a certain fan who asked him to do it in the first place. I did manage to get a ticket for the gig. However, all the poster, mails etc say that it will be a gig with B&S...but the tickets say it will be a 'very special live appearance' and make no mention of the band. Plus, reportage from the GU Guardian flatmate type enlightens us further - she seems to think that it will be a solo acoustic set. Oh, Stuart and Stevie did play an impromptu unplugged set of 2 songs (I Beatles, 1 new B&S) on Sunday. I'm sure the customary free pints were well earned. But anyway...back to the gig stuff. I think that it'll be great if it goes ahead, but I also think it's very unfair to get the hopes of 200+ fans up (think of those who queued and didn't get tickets too). I mean, before I knew Stuart was standing, my vote was with Alasdair Gray. Fair enough, Stuart would still be a great rector if the gig didn't go ahead, and it is the poor management provided by his campaign team that I think is to blame. But, if the gig didn't go ahead and we'd all been messed around, it'd make me seriously reconsider my vote - Alasdair Gray, after all, is a fine candidate too. Rant over. Listfolk, You do find the durndest things on college bulletin boards. I myself the other day found posted an offer of monetary reward, to offer my opinion in a discussion of bank services. Research, y'see. Corporate research. Without the appropriate skepticism, I signed up. They inundated me with reminders in the month between the sign-up and date of discussion. They even telephoned me the day before; yes, my opinion was worthwhile; it could change corporate structure; economic democracy was staging a miraculous return to the U-nited States. Then, the bikeride there, I tried to do too much. I bought the new Liliput CD, tried some polyester pants on, in lieu of finding my destination. As it happened, I got a little lost, riding all around the circumference of the bustling mall before finding the right place. They wanted my opinion at 5:00, but I walked in the door at 5:07, to a glaring secretary. : I'm here to participate in the survey. : Sorry sir, they've already started. : Well, can I just read the instructions and go in? : You're late. Don't go in. Wait, stay here. [annoyance at me, and more of it. she leaves her position monitoring the conference room by speakerphone, and walks into the room. the speakerphone betrays me, offers only muffled talk.] : Well sir, you'll get your money. : Aright, should I just go on in? : No sir, you're not allowed to enter the discussion. : Here you are. [hands me a white envelope, with a crisp bill rarely seen: $50] : Uhhhhhhh. Uh. : If you had been twenty minutes late, we wouldn't have paid you. : But you were less than ten. Next time be on time. Then, today, sitting in my sociology class entitled American Capitalism, my teacher began to discuss incentives of buying and selling under various capitalist economic configurations. I saw you and your friend at the Mojave 3 show in Baltimore last Sunday. And if any others of yous were there, a hello to you too. I was the black-haired girl with the neon orange/kittycat/SleaterKinney t-shirt and grey sharkskin jacket hanging out with the girl who looked like a very short posh spice. And yes she knows I pick on her. She does the same to me. It was a FABulous show and I ran into my friend Ryan who works up in Baltimore now. It was a nice night. Especially as me and my short-posh-spice-friend Maura used to be roomates, but then we had a Huuuuuge fight, and haven't hung out for a full evening, just us, since then. Plus I found out that they sell Red Bull in the US now. This makes me very happy. Kenneth, I thought of you. Splat!, I played your songs off the sinister website. You rock. My cat gave my computer the dirtiest look. Then he looked up at me and gave me the same look along with a long siamese mmmmmmmwroowwwwwww. If he could speak English it's like he was saying "Mom what the fuck is that? Y'know there's a cat in your computer. Do I have to kill your computer or are you gonna take care of it?". That's no more original. I've never read Catcher in the Rye. I went to a prep school from middle school until I graduated for a total of five years. Yep the little plaid skirts and the whole bit. The last thing I wanted to read in high school was something telling me about my fellow disgruntled classmates. And now, the last thing I want to read is a memory of high school. All this and I'm probably mistaken as to what the books about. All this and I ***loved*** The Sopranos by Alan Warner. Dunno. And I know two things about the Go-Betweens other than 'You should hear them, you'd love'em'; is Molly Ringwald's notebook in sixteen candles. Her character had it written big across her notebook. Or is that just a skewed memory? I think that might be wrong, I think it's a John Hughes production though. Plus the Leonard Cohen tribute album with Robert Forster singing a song. Mr. Forster's voice is reeeeallllly nice. MY FRIENDS GIVE ME TALKING DOLLS. NOT CHUCKY THOUGH, THANK FUCK. My friend Beth gave me a Valentine's day gift. It was unexpected. It was cool. It was a stuffed doll from the shop where she works. It's a little Chinese girl. Pink satin chinese-looking-style jacket with matching pink satin ribbons in black yarn hair. Neon green t-shirt, dark jeans with a big pink heart embroidered below one knee, pink platform mary janes. So...when you squeeze her hand she says the English, then the Mandarin Chinese of a bunch of different stuff. Hello,Ni Hao; How Are You?, Ni Hao Ma... My friend Amy, who is now a park ranger in Yellowstone and just how cool is that, gave me a sparkly orange and pink small doll with a big flower on it's front and big pigtails. When you pressed it's belly, it made this Boing Boing Boing noise. She said it was a portrait of me. A WEE STORY I.E. I HATE BEING A GROWN UP I.E. ME BITCHING ABOUT NOTHING. I OUGHT TO BE GRATEFUL. At 26, I'm becoming an adult. I've stayed in three times this week on nights when there was something to do. At fucking least I'm employed. At at fucking least I like my job. I'm the art supply shop girl. I sell really nice, really expensive paint. Brushes and sharp things too. On Monday, I did not go to the second night of Mojave 3 because I had to be at work at 8:45 the next morning and I had only had three and a half hours sleep the night before as me and my friend Maura had gone to Baltimore to see Mojave 3 the night before. And I had just worked from 8:45 until 6. Then on St.Valentines St.Shmalentines day, I was meant to go to a benefit show for living wage. Trixie Delicious & the Lott Lizards and the Rah-Bras. If either of these folks come to your town you should see them cos they do not suck. My friend, Shane, is Trixie Delicious. He is *the* most beautiful drag queen ever. He becomes a combination of Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline in a sporty Versace dress with Nick Cave's voice coming out. An old fashioned, good blend of northern soul & old school country music. Like when country and soul and rock and roll were much closer in definition to each other. Plus hand claps and "Woooooooo!!!"s and a mandolin and the girl who plays keyboards, plays something old and ***bright orange***. The Rah-Bras just rock. Like Blonde Redhead if they played Rocket From The Crypt's songs. And they have been known to sell deluxely decorated Bras as promotional items. Anyway. It was another case of a nine hour day with another one waiting at 8:45 the next day. And tonight. I had today off. I got up, made coffee & breakfast and went back to bed and cuddled with the cat and listened to Excuses For Travellers on repeat/shuffle for about 4 hours. Around two I got out of bed. Errand time! Bank. The tire place (as there is a nail in my tire that is unpatchable, but the nail is sticking firmly enough to drive around). Then the really big store. I hate the really big store, but I love xtra cheap film developing and seven dollars for a 5 pound bag of walnuts. I had some of my photographs from last year in Scotland ( & little bit of Ireland & England too) developed. It's awful exciting; like getting back on an airplane. One of my vegatable bins in my fridge is still half full of exposed films. Oh Dear. But as the really big store is evil in the bad way, it sucked me in. I ended upcoming home with a new-fangled mop, a swiffer. I figured it was ok, cos the mop i have now is from a dumpster and does not actually do anything but wet the floor. After I looked at my photos I was gonna go out to an early punkrock show of my friend Brien's band, Lycosa. Their record is something like 20 songs 20 minutes. Wrraaahhh. I decided I didn't wanna deal with snooty secnester 15-21 year old punkrock kids cos I'm *not punk rock enough and I don't even have any tattoos*. What-ever. It's not me, it's them. No offence to any non snooty punk rock kids. You're alright. Or any 15-21 year olds. You're alright too. Plus, I couldn't be bothered to put my shoes back on anyway. No Loud Rahhhk tonight then. I could have gone to see another friend's band. See, this town is small, but there's at least one band for every two people and often all the good ones play on the same night. Some are good, some aren't, same everywhere though. Jessica plays the saw. It sounds cool as shit. like a theremin. Her and the other guy in the band, Phil, call themselves 'Toothpick'. Saw=tooth; Guitar=pick...Toothpick. Get it? Oy Vey. I said, ok I'll go hang out, listen to some music, have a drinky-poo, maybe see some folks I know. Y'know be social. I prepared dinner. Then after my complexly prepared deli sandwich; i walked through the kitchen...the swiffer drew me to it with it's mop magneticism. I assembled it properly, and proceeded to dustmop my entire house. I felt like Judy Jetson with my futuristic mop. My roomate said if they found out I'm this excited about a mop, they'll commandeer all my punk rock t-shirts. I could have made a whole new cat with just the fur from underneath the radiators. I could have gone out and been social. But I have to work at 10 tomorrow morning. Speaking of My Local Record Store; I did the stupid,"now that I'm employed it's safe for me to go into the record store again" thing. Nope, not safe. I got some fabulous records and I'm very happy listening to them. Especially cos the only thing I can do after work is crash, it's nice to go straight to my bed from work and make friends with my stereo. blimey, it's all gone rather surreal in b&s world, what with hoax gigs, multiple identities, releasing new material... whatever next? ever feel haunted by past comments? i just received an sweet email from the original singer of the littlest hobo theme (yes!), which i raved about on sinister around the time it was used on the natwest adverts. he thanked me for my compliments, told me about his new album 'maybe tomorrow', and directed me to his website. i was quite excited by this, but it got me hoping that the archives never provoke less pleasant responses. 'you slagged off my novel in 1998, here's a virus that will utterly destroy your hard drive'. mark has already summarised the rather non-sinister but still rather fab brighton meet-up, so i won't dwell on his apparent intention to empty all brighton's record shops of stock, nor the rum (definitely not the rum), nor the fact that i learnt the adjective for 'heron-like', which i've now forgotten, nor the toast. it was all good clean fun, though now mark has outed me as an early supporter of pete waterman's evil empire, he won't be invited back... oh, and in case anyone wondered, i'm not actually *married* to mr jamie t conway... i wonder if mark is expecting people to remember jamie from his melody maker days? not impossible i suppose, i'm told he actually did have fans. and, even better if you're a young music journalist, enemies. now, i must say something about dating. grr. for a long while i was sure such a stupid concept couldn't really exist, or not in britain anyway, maybe in the kind of america portrayed by my judy blume books and 'girltalk', which i read at a highly impressionable age and panicked because i didn't get half the references, being english. what the hell was the difference between pants and panties? and which ones shouldn't you take off on a first date? ah yes, dating. i have never been on a single real date in my life, to my knowledge. imho, if you go out for the evening with someone who you haven't slept with, or at least snogged, then you're just friends. why call it a date? where is the line between friend and date? i say avoid the confusion and cut to the chase. if you go out with a nice guy/girl and end up in bed, cool. but why spend an evening being all anxious about 'etiquette' and 'signals'? it's a lot less embarassing eating spaghetti in front of someone *after* they've seen you naked. chris pez said something about cool places to live and manhattan lofts. i also fully intend to own the latter some day, and in fact i think we should club together to buy a sinister apartment block. like in 'friends', everybody will sleep with everybody else, gunther from the coffee house will be played by stuart murdoch, and ugly naked guy will be... hm, couldn't think of anything to put here without causing offence. nice to hear from owen again, even if he was boasting about his sex appeal while pretending to be just an overwhelmed indie kid. we all do it, after all. as for lowgold, i saw them supporting grandaddy and wasn' t really enamoured. too angsty. but at least they're better than top-yourselves-please-loader. tomorrow is my last day at work! i'm freeee!
