This is the funniest true story someone's told me all week: My roomate was telling me about back in the day when he and two other of his friends were camping out in the middle of the country and taking hallucinogenic drugs. That's not the funny part. They were hungry and wanted to eat some of the cans of canned fruit and whatnot. That's not the funny part either. Hello all, It's carnival week here in Brazil. Time off school is nice, washed-out ex-movie stars dancing topless on tv is less nice. The other Brazilian sinistereens can fill in details about Carnival and all the ensuing parades. Its so unbearably hot in the summer here. It makes me long for winter up north somewhere. I listen to Winter Wooskie and get desperately jealous. I wish i were freezing. No, I don't. My birthday's on Sunday, three days after Peter's. So happy birthday to him. Every time my birthday comes around it reminds me of a mad science teacher i had years ago. He used to tell me I was very lucky to have been born on March 4th. And i'd say, why? And he'd say, it's the only day of the year that's also a military order, "march forth!" and i'd smile politely. What a nut he was. Jay mentioned Elephant6 and Kindercore. I had no idea there were other E6-fans around here. My favourite E6-type band is Of Montreal, for sure. ALthough they do fall under the "indie vocals and piano" category that can be incredibly annoying. But they manage to pull it off. Oh, the wonders of junk mail. I got one the other day titled "I LOVE YOU AND I DONT WANT YOU TO DIE". Imagining a mystery novel and an anonymous warning, I was instead faced with an email about Richard Simmons and weight loss. Funny, I thought, that's the last thing I think about. The internet's brought us so much, hasn't it? It's also brought us the entirely awfully uncomfortable situation of 'running into', online, an ex-love who hasn't talked to you in years. Drawing a deep breath and watching out for typos, you say, "Hey, how are you? How've you been?". the answer comes: "alright." Another breath. With hope: "Miss me?". Shortly: "No." the rest of the conversation is a quick exercise in cutting your losses. Of course, i'm imagining all this....... Hi everyone... I hope you all had a good Mardi Gras. Did you know that was today? I did. I knew it when I woke up at DAWN this morning and put on my old shoes (because of the mud, and because they're most comfortable for walking). I really should've dressed up this year. I'm going to make a costume for next year, so I have to start thinking! I walked a whole lot. It was supposed to be cloudy today, but it WASN'T so now my face is all pink with sunburn. I can still hear marching bands somewhere... the drums are still pounding out that rhythm that they use to keep time... The other night I saw a Red Bull Car (a 6ft long can of red bull on top of a red Volkswagen Beetle), and I was immediately reminded of Ken, so we chased it down. The driver said that she was all out of Red Bull! We were very disappointed. And then it started to rain so we ran through the rain for miles and got soaked. It was so muddy and fun! I love Napster. Well, I have the whole rest of the week off, so I guess I'm going to spend it doing very important things, like watching the Travel Channel and chatting on IRC. I can't wait, really. Ok. Bye! Hey, can I tell you about the afternoon sunlight that filters in at about half past four or so? I think I'll always be partial to rooms with west-facing windows. The day winds down, sometimes from nothing, and then, especially then, you're in that reflective mood. So that bar of sunlight across the comforter can be something to focus on and think about. It seems so strange sometimes to go from the quiet, the absolute stillness of my room - I've got this clock that ticks too loudly - to the activity and outwardness of the department. So humming songs, as I've said before, is good for the transition, to get one's courage up. I forget when I first realized it had worked it's way into my brain - the chorus part of that Foxgloves song "We'll Never Be Cool". There's that breathlessness before it kicks in, like the moment of consciousness that unhinges a reflex, I mean is it really worth crying about? I don't know - I've got an image in my mind of the singer in the south of France on a summer internship with his girlfriend. He'll be seated on the sofa with his feet propped up on the coffee table conjugating verbs, and she'll be on a stool before a drafting table - the kind that architects have. She'll be in a cotton skirt, bare legs, feet crossed on the rest, figuring out the dimensions of the Montpelier getaway of a modern French couple (but of noble lineage). I don't know - what's holding them back? It might seem at first that she's beyond comforting, but pretty soon he'll get up and put on their favorite record, tap her lightly on the shoulder, the barest caress, completed by memory. Then they might dance awhile with the soft summer air blowing in. He won't insist that she should know better than to mind the missed invitation. Yeah, I guess they're too knowing to be smug or superior; no, they'll admit they don't understand how their occupations could be so pedestrian when their thoughts float in the upper air. hiii, i'm so confused i blame these hacky computer types myself,i allways fall for things like that,i though the stuart d thing was true *blush*,how niave am i?. VERY. this has happend to me before cos someone haked into the mtv site and said eimmenm was dead and i believed it and told loads of people and felt very silly in the morning when it wasnt it any papers or on the news,maybe i'm too trusting. jen talked about being addicted to purple,i'm addicted to imperial mints they are just soooooo fantastic and yummy,hmmmmm all chalky and yummy when you break them open with your teeth scrummy yummy.hehe.my other addiction is much worse though smoking yikes,i should try and quit cos i sound like darth vadar when ever i sleep theres an attractive image for you thinking i'm darth vadar,but he turned out ok in the end ol' darth infact i quite liked him in the end. i'm very excited about new b&s stuff as is everyone on the list i bet,it should be super,and a tour toooo woww they are going to be busy bunnys over spring,lets hope it actually comes off this year. Sinister: Out of the dark ...

hi .... I very rarely post here. I often feel like it but my words look daft on the screen and often get binned before I even write them. I like Leonard Cohen. I wouldn't call myself a fan .. I have a live recording and various "collections of his best songs" And a few songs my friend taped for me. I love Take This Waltz. A radio guy here (who announced over the radio that I was an old listener and over 40 because he had only skim read the mail I sent him which mentioned someone born in 1952) thinks Everybody Knows is the worst Cohen song ever. I disagree The thing about differences in musical tastes Jordi posted is interesting. So what "creates" musical tastes in a person? How come a song that touches one person leaves the other so called or even annoys them? How come I rarely listen to music these days although I should? I went out last night but it wasn't the same anymore ... A couple of years ago I would have loved it. Glam night. Pulp. Suede. David Bowie. Lots of androgynous people. Glitter. Featherboas. But it being a carnival special and me being old and twisted I couldn't help thinking that everybody would just wash it off once they got home. A teenage boy tried to either pull me or make fun of my dancing and that made me feel so old. Some man my age kept staring at me cell messaging my friend (the message did not get through in the end as I had no more money in my mobile account) Plus it was so sticky I couldn't breath. Everybody seemed to be smoking. Sinister: Snow in spring....weird

Dear Sin'sters, Everyday more new people venture out of the nursery to join the mayhem, the list is getting bigger everyday, and isn't it exciting. So big waves to everyone - old and new. I have very little to say and next to no content. Here's my content; We were painting the house at the weekend, and I was playing 'If you're feeling sinister' because I love it so. However, my sister's friend found the music so unpleasant that she faced her fear of heights to climb up the ladder to the upper rooms where the CD player was to turn it off. I was seriously offended, but she listens to dance music and likes Westlife. Someone said they went to the Divine Comedy, on Valentine's Day, with a cute girl, (see I did listen to what you said, even if I can't remember who you are). What I want to know is did they play loads of new songs and were they fabulous? Why is the rude Mr Peacock writing foul things to us? I read Harry Potter in bookshops, this takes a long time because I always feel a little conspicuous after a while and run away. I think I'm going to have to buy the book soon because I want to know what happens. I bought purple tights yesterday, I mention this solely for JenOwl. They're not very purple, the colour is actually called heather. I'm going to wear them with my very short purple skirt and maybe I'll be arrested for soliciting. Out of the nursery! Yawn, stretch, blink. It's nice to be here. Greetings! I bought Legalman this weekend- not so great. Where are all the great tunes, the ones that make you dance and cry, like String Bean Jean and There's Too Much Love? Iss crAAYzy. Interesting and strange, for sure, but all punches pulled, somehow. I also went to a party this weekend in tres trendy bars and had one of those conversations with a boy where you both endure the boredom of your stilted only-just-met-conversation because you're interested in one another- weird interested-not-interested like dynamic tension. He's a physicist, and embarrassed of this, which is strange. So anyway, the delicate situation was progressing nicely in little circles, both of us on a sofa at the edge of the bustle, leaning forward and straining to hear each other, when suddenly an old friend of mine leapt on me roaring drunk, knocked me over and hugged me rolling around on the floor. Kinda hard to return, brush youself off, 'ahem, so what were you saying about the behaviour of particles?' Dash it! But I did wear my fantastic new P!O!P! shoes (actually called that) which are big clog sandals that have little wheels inside that pop down at the touch of a button, and hey presto! roller skates!! which is tres exciting, and makes up for the evening's lack of romantic frisson. Sinister: Beef Jerky: breakfast of champions

Hello you lovely bunch of people. I'm back from America lighter of pocket and heavier of CD collection. I also remembered how tequila never gives me a hangover and took full advantage of this fact - huzzah! Having spent the morning reading every single email in my inbox (phew!) I feel a need to post coming on. Somewhere in the midst of all the posts I read today, somebody mentioned the Blessed Sebastian and then Neil talked about St Sebastian. Sebastian is without a doubt my favourite saint. In paintings, he always looks pale and skinny and waifish, with his eyes cast skywards in classic indieboy pose and there's something strangely alluring in the way he bears the pain of all those arrows sticking into his ribs. My favourite arrow is the one sticking into his thigh, though. Rrrrraouw! Is it allowed to fancy saints, or is this what you'd call an unclean thought? Speaking of violent deaths and the like, has anyone seen that Fear programme on MTV? Saturday's episode took place in a deserted cement factory where there were tons of accidents in the eighties - things like a kiln being switched on while there were people inspecting the interior and a metal walkway collapsing while there were people on it. There have been loads of reports of paranormal activity since, so MTV decided to send half a dozen foolhardy youngsters there with video cameras on Friday 13th, during a full moon, and set them each a challenge (walk up the inside of the kiln, retrieve a piece of paper to prove you did it, report any paranormal activity, hear voices, feel presences, scream your little lungs out etc.) I curled up under the covers in my hotel room, watching from behind the pillow clutched to my trembling bosom and tried not to get the willies. In the end, though, I just had to switch off after they sent a kid to the top of a 350 foot ramp with only the full moon lighting his path and told him to re-enact the suicide of the factory owner by sticking his head through a noose attached to a big concrete block and then kicking said block over the 350 foot drop to the floor. They didn't tell him that the rope was longer than 350 feet. I suppose poor taste is to be expected of MTV, but that was really something. And what were they offering in return for successful completion of this challenge? Five thousand measly dollars. I mean, hang on (boom boom), is it really worth it? I'm not sure I could do that for any amount of money. I was completely unsuccessful in my attempts at willies prevention and now I can't even shut my eyes while I wash my hair in case something comes up from behind and grabs me. Yikes! Did Bono really talk about humility when he won his grammy? Fuck off, you bloated old sloth in leather kecks, you. I think that's all I have to say for now. Oh no, wait a minute, one more thing.
