Hello pussycats 'Eastenders - everyone's talking about it'. Are they arse! No one at all at my work talks about Eastenders, and I've got so much to say. Isn't the whole point of working to partake in idle chit-chat about soap operas? I think I need a new job. But it's all gone a bit 'Who Shot Mr. Burns?', hasn't it? My bet's on Chloe. Scouring the Scotch papers this weekend, I happened upon a couple of tiny mentions of Belle & Sebastian - neither of which is news in any way imaginable, but perhaps midly diverting none the less. In the first one, from Friday's Scotsman, Craig McLean dreams up a Scottish alternative to the Brits, called, imaginatively, the Scots: "The Cardinal Winning Holier Than Thou Tower (made from finest ivory) is bestowed upon Belle & Sebastian. This is to mark just how precious they are (to us all). Unfortunately band leader Stuart Murdoch can't be with us tonight, as he's still puggled after making an album and doing a press conference about a year ago. Instead, he sent us this video message: 'Could someone take my copy of My Ain Folk back to Azad please?'" I chuckled. Then in the Sunday Herald on, erm, Sunday, David Keenan's review of a Texas concert said: "Stuff like In Our Lifetime is only narrowly saved from being soft-focus pap by guitarist Andy McErlane who insists on letting rip with this gnarly, endearingly stupid garage punk riff, but for the most part he looks as if he'd rather be playing in Belle & Sebastian." I'm not sure what he means. Ewan Dunbar babbled about the Blessed Sebastian. Two miracles isn't bad, but spare a thought for poor old St. Sebastian. Despite stopping a plague, which is pretty good going, Diocletian still ordered him to be shot to death with arrows. Bastard. But he recovered! Hurrah! So they beat him to death with clubs instead. Boo! And to add to his woes, God (and his Celestial Angel Committee, presumably) then made him the patron saint of archers! 'Bloody archers', he must have thought, 'I've had it up to here with archers!' And two miracles is probably a lot better than St. Sithney managed. He, I'm sure you'll all agree, was a pretty crap saint. Sithney had a vision in which God told him to be the patron saint of lovely girls, but he didn't fancy it as girls would plague him for husbands and pretty dresses all the time, so he became the patron of mad dogs instead. So if your dog goes mad, offer up a decade of the Rosary to Sithney, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Next week on the Bibliotheca Sanctorum mailing list: The story of St. Zita and the angels baking her loaves while she was rapt with ecstasy and St. Leander's conversion of the Visigoths! well I is back ducked out of a lecture to come to a computer room just to say hi to you lovely people so what have i been up to? well you'll be pleased to hear that I avoided seeing atomic kitten play at the uni.... they decided that it was too small a gig for them as they were number one and so they cancelled. of course had they cancelled normally they would have been forced to pay costs but it seems two of them came down with bronchitis on the day of the gig...they seemed fine on TV 2 days later! did get to see the divine comedy on valentines day though....with a cute girl too....of course she's just a friend....and a sinister one at that so hello sweetie. anyway...thats it for gigs lately...may go to see brave captain support lowgold soon.....if i can find a friend to go with.....by the way does anyone know whether lowgold are any good? and another thing does anyone else feel that stuart davids promotion of the new book has been taken too far, hijacking the looper site was funny but its been up too long now and people who want to find out about the band are only getting a (bizarre) advert for the new book by stuart and so on to this posts bizarre story of stuff that happened on a drunken night out....was in the pub (as per usual) on friday night (freestylers were guest dj's....total turd) and saw my mate rick so went to say hi cos I hadn't seen him in ages. he was sitting with 3 birds who I didn't recognise but one of them recognised me...oh dear....the conversation went something like this bird 1-you're owen aren't you me-yeah b1-you fucked leona rick-i didn't tell them (walks away leaving me with them) b1-no we know leona well, you're lucky getting to fuck her bird2-she was lucky from what i heard bird3-yeah you're a good shag you know me-oh ermm (turns a little bit red) well they introduced themselves and it turns out they were called june alex and i cant remember bird3's name. the conversation continued thus alex-june's a lovely girl, hasn't she got great tits june-(giggles) alex-of course my tits are nice to (thrusts them in my face) but i've got a boyfriend so i think you should fuck june me-ermm i better go get back to my friends, see you later (retreats at great velocity) so thats the story...some birds i didnt know told me they heard i was a good shag, thrust their (rather large) tits in my face and then tried to get me to fuck one of them. Hi I'll try to make this quick and painless, as my posts, though few in number, are great in dread. It's just that I have to write 2000 words on the Baedeker Blitz for tomorrow, and I've exhausted all other procrastination activities, hence my resort to posting. (Incidentally, anyone with grannies and grandpas from Exeter or, conversely, Lubeck, are welcome to offer me primary accounts of area bombing, as it really does make excellent party conversation...) So, here are Marybeth's 14 Points, if you like, though you probably won't like them. 1. I had a dream last night that for some reason I was being interviewed for lifetime achievement (HA!) and someone asked me what was the inspiration for my life and I said something to the effect of: "Why, it's all just an Arlo Guthrie song!" How random can that be??????? 2. Wouldn't it be fantasmic if a certain Mr. Murdoch rewrote The Beautiful South's "Song for Whoever" and changed all the names to his little muses? Lazy Jane, Photo Jenny, Judy and Lis(a) oh i forget your name........ Okay, I'm obviously not a songwriter, but you get the idea. I'm sure someone has a greater grasp of syllabification than me. 3. I was watching someone get an elbow replacement on tv the other day and this occurred to me: What would happen if the world ended while you were in surgery? Think about it, kidlets, and report back to me. 4. In "Celia of the Seals" is Donovan trying to emulate seal sounds with that weird, nonsensical singing? If you know the song, you know the part i mean. It really creeped me out, but i still like the song. It's no Barabajagal, but anything about seals can't be All Bad. 5. I miss Hinterland Who's Who. 6. Cigarettes and wine gums DO NOT mix well. 7. Orangina and wine gums DO NOT mix well. 8. Actually, nothing really mixes well with winegums. 9. I have a cat named Stella and she IS the devil. The strange part is that during the one "cute" moment of her life, she dipped her paw into her water dish and proceeded to wash her face with it. I almost forgot about all the times she has bitten and maimed me in the past when i saw that. Then I noticed she was using her left paw. Sinister after all...... 10. I really like the song "Belle and Sebastian," as opposed to just the band. I think it's cute. I like all the Sebastian songs, even though I should technically prefer the Belle ones. 11. Why do people look at me funny when I buy flowers for myself? Moreover, why doesn't anyone buy flowers for me? 12. Did John Steinbeck EVER actually come up with an original title for a story? Who cares, it's just another reason to hate him. 13. Is it just me, or are kids getting shorter these days? 14. Does anyone else know the story of the Erie Belle? I love this story, as it was part of my childhood. One can still see the decaying smokestack of the Erie Belle on the beaches of Lake Huron - somewhere near Kincardine. I don't know what I'll do when the Erie Belle is gone for good - it seems like a potentially good friend. Alright, that's enough rambling. Try not to hold it against me. (http://www.nme.com/NME/External/News/News_Story/0,1004,18165,00.html) FRESHERS' BELLE BELLE & SEBASTIAN frontman STUART MURDOCH made a surprise live appearance in GLASGOW last night (February 25), NME.COM can exclusively reveal. The appearance came as part of his ongoing campaign to become rector of Glasgow University. Murdoch was joined onstage by fellow band-member Stevie Jackson for two songs at the University Union's regular 'Unplugged' acoustic evening. The event is usually reserved for local talent, who perform covers and original songs for a free pint of beer. Jackson and Murdoch performed two songs, a cover of The Beatles' 'You Can't Do That' and an as-yet-untitled new song, which an eyewitness described as "very Spanish, certainly not traditional Belle & Sebastian". A source close to Murdoch told NME.COM today (February 26) that the show was "unplanned", and that "half the people in the venue didn't know who he was". As previously revealed on NME.COM, members of Belle & Sebastian are to play a secret live show in the city later this week, and 200 free tickets for the show were given out to students last Friday (February 23).
