Hey, look at me, I'm almost organised. No, not really. But I have come up with a really brilliant plan for this Glasgow picnic which we're having next weekend, Saturday the 16th of June 2001 for god's sake. OK, so the plan isn't really brilliant, but it is simple. Much like me. What it is is that I think we should all meet at Kelvinbridge Underground station at 2pm on said date, and go from there to as-yet-undecided spot in Kelvingrove Park. We'll probably hang around the station for 20-30 mins to wait for latecomers, but if by any chance you miss us there and can't find us in the park, then you can phone me on 07733356611 and I'll turn into a kind of Scottish Robinson or Alder and come and find you hopefully, or direct you to the correct location. Or I'll send one of my minions off to do it for me. We'll be waiting at the station exit which leads to the car park, rather than up on the bridge itself. IE don't go up the stairs/escalator when you come out the station. If you need any help with directions or have any other questions concerning the picnic or the state of the world in general, please mail me. Sinister: Ways to waste time while you're panicing about having to much to do

So, I've got so much work to do that my brain has started attacking me with the prospect of having a Gerry Haliwell song stuck in my head if I don't get more work done! I've spent most of this morning doing bits and peices of the dreded 'w' word, but every now and then checking my e-mails and intrestingly distracting myself from the work in hand. If anybody knows anything about hoverflies and colour patterns, plant water stress, or ways of controling scrub in wildlife management then I would be most gratefull if you could do my work for me. No! Well thats not good enough, I'm gonna go and sulk now Incase any of you where wondering I'm doing a degree in environmental biology - which isn't as intresting as it sounds. I did have one lecture last night which was about cute fluffy animals, but its about the first and I'm about to leave soon. Added to that lecturer gezzer (nicknamed bird man to all that know of him) only mentioned hedgehogs once and didn't mention foxes at all (boo hoo). Triss Brazil said "and his name is david kitt. he's not a friend of mine, though i certainly wouldn't mind, and the album is called the big romance" Big romance a lovely summery album. Its warm, delightful and bulges with images of kids eating icecream, kissing in the medow and playing in the paddling pool. I think B&S fans may like it because of the lyrical conntent and the way the musics structured. Its got that kind of B&S quality and feel to it. Mark Casseottom said "My real thinking behind it is my abhorrence of apathy (which comes from being a deeply undisciplined and apathetic person who would flagellate himself for it if he could be arsed). But then maybe that's my problem". Only 9% young people voted (grrr). Which means that 89% of young people are saying they don't want a democracy. I'm not quite sure if undisciplined is the right word, I think alot of its down to people thinking that 'voting won't make a difference as all politions are lichen sucking sludgegulpers from hell and talk about as much sence as posh spice on speed' (well most of them, some of them can be quite nice ocassionly and *gasp* come out with some good ideas). Which I can understand, but democrocy is a very important, and the general election is the only time we get to have a real say. The subject line is a quote from the Mr. PY Chu. A rather fine line, methinks. I plan to tread it, in intent not unlike Richard Long (who makes installation artworks comprising photos of country walks he's made in the form of reproduced maps and photos and stones collected in a circle on the floor (like a pagan 'consecrated place'/clearing in the forest/ space on life's journey) or, if we admit *telephone line* Sol LeWitt. Capitalise the W for added fun [ real name Sol Lewitt]. O, the intelligence and humour/huey of the sun, beaming over the telephone. He telephones instructions from New York, and people in consequence paint ordered series of lines on walls; white-painted cubic timber-skeleton cities on the floor and, increasingly, patches of complex hues on the walls, presumably done via a series of overlays of acted-upon references to a colour chart (users of programs such as photoshop will be familiar with the hue/saturation/brightness concept which arrives as a series of numbers and makes pretty patches on the screen). Here'Say are interviewed on Radio 1, and do seem to be producing some finely produced pop. Heresy is merely against the soberly (without passion) re-elected government. The dj fancies Susy. I was given half a pint of wine in a tumbler by an (*the(e)*) actress/barmaid at the French the first time I went there, in London's Soho: I asked for 'red wine; a large one please' so she smiled and emptied half a bottle into this large glass tumbler. I kept going back. The manager, escorting me out the door one night said to me: 'Not everyone likes you, but you're always very polite, and so you're always welcome back' so they're like, my family down south. I occassionally pop in between flights to impress them. There are hush hush rumours of a possible Camera Obscura/Dudley Corporation joint gig. But I'll say no more because I know no more, but it would be good. I have to re-make a compilation tape and, thankfully have already made a track-listing, so I can pick up the CD's in the right order. The previous one I listen to alot but, unfortunately, a lovely but rather scratchy recording of a Portugese love song is bleeding into the Arctic waters of a Hector Zazou/Bjork track I recorded over it. So I'll do the whole thing again. I seem to be making an elaborated bullet-pointed list to the sinister list, and I fear recriminations for its lack of consequence. So I shall stop, and send it anyway. Like the tape. Which will be carried by a variety of transports to another part of the world: a concept of which I am fond, along with the idea of a Camera Obscura/Dudley Corporation joint gig. I shall be at the Glasgow picnique. I'll be the scary silent one lost amongst all the other scary silent ones, attempting to forget imagined images projected over the internet. I suggest Peter Miller calls Ally96 on his mobile for directions to the lower entrance/exit of the Kelvingrove underground (clockwork orange: ref to the refurbishment of the line in the same year as the Burgess/Kubrick collaboration came out on screen with music by Walter/Wendy Carlos (after Beethoven) from his vantage point in, who knows? Catalonia? The Saracen's Head? A&E? Better shut up about, say, 9 paragraphs back. 2 and I'd get away with Here'say. While I'm at it, I'll take this opportunity to say the following: THOMAS PYNCHON I was chuffed to see his name show up in a few posts not all that long ago. 'Gravity's Rainbow' is a bit of a slog, admittedly, but well worth the effort. I think that this is one of those books that is bought far more often than it is read, unfortunately, and probably not the place to start with Pynchon. If it seems a bit dense and impenetrable at first (which it most certainly is), may I humbly recommend kicking off with something a bit slimmer, like 'The Crying of Lot 49'. It makes a perfect appetizer. I'm reading 'V' at the moment, as it happens, which is also thoroughly enjoyable, and a little more approachable. AIR The jury's still out on the new album, as far as I'm concerned. I've warmed to a few of the tracks, but they sound suspiciously like a band getting just slightly worse with each subsequent release. Shame, really. Particularly in the face of the new Daft Punk, which (whilst not strictly my cup of tea) is fairly obviously a sophisticated and genuinely inventive bit of work. BUYING ALBUMS SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU LIKE THE NAME A good idea, clearly. Made me the first kid on my block with the Kings of Convenience record for one. Oh and if you're not listening to both them and the Aislers Set almost constantly at the moment, I'm frankly a little disappointed :) THE LETTER 'S' Why do all good record collections have so many more records under 's' than any other letter? That's my lot for now. I'd like to be able say that I was off to play with words and pictures or do something pretty, or something similarly clever and relevant, but I can't, because I'm off to drink gin and see a band. Sinister: Hours after the election and the crime rate's up already

We've had a break-in at work this morning, a window was smashed, a laptop stolen and we're all sitting around waiting for the Scene of Crime Officer to arrive to dust our desks. Will he be taking *our* prints too, I wonder? They've got mine already, heh heh heh.... We've been given the bizarre instruction that we can touch our computers but not our desks, which is why my hands are assuming the pose of Thing from the Addams Family as I type. Tonight I'm going to see the Preston School of Industry here in Oxford. Having missed Mr Malkmus when he was over, I might as well check out Mr Stairs. I *think* I've managed to persuade The Girlfriend that she wants to go. Although whether agreeing to go on the basis of having heard "Brighten the Corners" for the first time on Wednesday amounts to "false pretences" is anyone's guess. The BBC tell us that Ann Widdecombe is popular with the grassroots on the "rubber chicken circuit". But what on earth is the "rubber chicken circuit" when it's at home? I'm sure rubber chickens aren't nearly as exciting as plastic frogs. Had a big discussion last night about whether voting in elections should be obligatory like it is in 'Stralia. The two woolly liberals in the room (me and Miss V) were the ones in favour; my Tory-voting best friend and his rural conservative (that's the politest way I can think of putting it) girlfriend thought it was a denial of rights. Is it peculiar that the right-wingers are advocating freedom of choice and I'm not? Obviously, in any compulsory vote there'd have to be a "none of the above" section. My real thinking behind it is my abhorrence of apathy (which comes from being a deeply undisciplined and apathetic person who would flagellate himself for it if he could be arsed). But then maybe that's my problem. I find it hard to post to sinister these days. Perhaps I shot my wad in the early days, when I thought people were interested in what I was saying, and got terribly upset about the silliest of things which spurred me on to scribble more and more rubbish It doesn't really flow any more. Strange. But apart from the election, something else happened yesterday that's got me thinking (which I don't do nearly enough of these days). My grandfather died. So far, other than an awareness of a deeply-hidden knot of something inside me, I've barely reacted at all. I've been very lucky really; he's the closest person to me to have died so far, and the whole "how to feel" thing is making me wonder whether I'm doing it right. Is there a right way? I suppose not. It wasn't a shock, and there are many aspects of the situation which are, for us and for him, a blessed relief. I'm not quite sure whether that's a good thing, but perhaps it's a comfort. I'm also terrified of seeing my grandmother for the first time since it happened. I feel quite guilty about that. Ach, not very interesting, is it? ListGoverness Lulou must be tapping her fingers and wondering if I'm ever going to get to the point. Hell, this is sinister, does there have to be one? Perhaps I should say how impressed I am with the sillustrations that seem to be expanding weekly. I hate you talented people :-) I fell off my bike, but it wasn't very Belle and Sebastian. i have not made a sound on the list until now. I have been a listee for over a year but NEWER posted. Why i post now? Well i am soon finished at the school where i have internet access.That means i will no longer get sinister mails :( The sinister list has helped me through many boring lessons with visual basic, windows servers, html codes a.s.o What i have discovered this last months of my course is that this is totally wrong for me. I do not want to use the rest of my life learning about new upgrades for stupid microsoft programs every time they are released (twice a month!)That would be like going to bore-school for another 30-40 years. Anyway, i go home from school and feel sorry for my self, listen to b&s (if your feeling..)But i have realised that i dont have a clue on what else to do... What should i become when i grow up? (i am nineteen now, so i shoul be a grownup right about ....NOW!) It would be fantastic to be a chef(or cook wich i also think those perverted englishmen would call it : ) But in norway the school system isnt actually very fond of nineteenn year olds not knowing what to do with their lifes. I have spent my years in scool and wont get any more easily. So i ask you fellow listees : Do you have a great tip for something i should spend my working "career" on?
