Woo! That's it. Tour's over and whether you love it or hate it Jonathan David is now firmly part of our lives. Looks like B&S action is gonna be thin on the ground until the next EP or Struan's next haircut... ...So um.. What shall we talk about? Anyone read any good books lately? Hey! Ever wondered who records those telephone announcements that tell you what buttons to press to avoid talking to a human being? "Press 1 for Sales... Press 2 for excuses... Press 3 for bollocks and bullshit..." That kind of thing. Well it's me! Yes! My first professional vocal performance was laid down today. Did it a single unrehearsed take as well. My silky smooth voice now guides lost souls through the labyrinth of options at my particular place of work. I even got to say "Your call is held in a queue" and said it with absolute sincerity too. Ken Chu pointed out: "...I can't see sod all there because of tall people..." This isn't the first time someone on the list has had a go at those who have the sheer gall to go to gigs and be tall. And just like last time I'm gonna join in. GRR!!! But I realise now it would be overly time-consuming to go around hacking the legs off all the tall people in order to standardise human height. Sinister: Like a tramp in the night, I was begging for you

My pretties: Tempted as I am to grizzle and moan on about the couple of weeks I've had, I'll instead affect a chipper demeanour and attempt to stay within spitting distance of topic. SINISTER Being the closest thing I've had to actual human contact for most of the last little while, I'm feeling somewhat gushy towards you lot, so I'll take this opportunity to let each of you know that I love you like my very own brothers and sisters, and you're all welcome back to mine any time you like. That goes double for the #sinister types who've kept me company in the wee hours, and listened to all manner of sleep-deprived nonsense. Bless your cotton socks. A NIGHT OUT I managed to get a night off this week, and on the whole, it was an absolute corker. Saw a very talented mate of mine play a gig, the unquestionable highlight of which was a cover of the ever-popular 'Touch Me' by Sam Fox. He starts out making it sound very serious and restrained, then gradually loosens his grip on it, as he heads inexorably for the chorus. A handsome reinterpretation of a modern day classic. It's a delight to stand and watch the faces of audience members change as they recognise the song that they've been studiously swaying along to for the past minute or two. Outstanding. Following which was an evening of odd, deceptive, sweet drinks in large numbers of small glasses, liberally interspersed with generous gin and tonics. The shaking of booty and the talking of nonsense also featured throughout. I'd not otherwise mention this, as it's more or less par for the course, except that a select few of us regular sorts were able to stay on after closing and have the run of the place. Many completely superfluous drinks were consumed, and the sound and light system were commandeered. My bag contained my discman, with my IYFS cd in it, so we gave that a spin and listened to just about the whole box and dice, and danced about like a pack of mad people to 'Get Me Away...' in the empty club. Not often you get to hear that out, at least not in this particular backwater. Borderline content, to be sure, but fun for the whole family nevertheless. MY OLD MAN Well, the old man turns out to be quite the dark horse. He comes to visit, and finds me in an as yet unfit state to receive him. So, I press 'play' on the stereo, and go and get respectable (or the closest approximation I can manage). I re-emerge, resplendent, to find him doing a little jig to Jonathan David. Blimey, perhaps I'm not the milkman's after all. ARE B&S CRAP? In a word, no. The new stuff is, well, new, which neither surprises nor bothers me. I think that Jonathan David is a bit of an ugly duckling of a song, and I'm surprised how much I've come to like it over the last little while. It's as much the soundtrack to my current day-to-day as anything. It's also the weakest of the tracks on the single - TYCCASI could use an ending and an original melody, but I can't help but love it, and TLOAMDR is still great in it's 'rawk-lite' incarnation. The peel session is glorious, and a pretty good example of how much more diverse the songwriting in the band is at the moment. Yes, I wouldn't be complaining if they managed to cobble together another IYFS, but they won't, so they may as well push on and try a few things out. I'm all for it. I can almost forgive them for Beyond the Sunrise. Wait, no I can't. ISOBEL'S ARSE Since there's no chance of me getting to a gig in the foreseeable, it's been grand to hear about pretty much all of them, albeit at second hand. I am, however, sick of hearing about the size of Isobel's arse. I've not seen a photograph of it (panoramic or otherwise, as some might suggest), but I choose to picture it as being just about the right size, when listening. Much in the same way, I choose to imagine that each and every one of you is the perfect embodiment of man/womanhood as I read. I'm sure I'm correct on both counts, and I'd rather not be proven wrong. PROPS To Lorraine for her smashing onstage performance. I don't know you, and I wasn't there, but someone was kind enough to point me in the direction of an mp3, and it's a tidy bit of work. Hats off. To Gordon for his last post. You've a way with words, and I don't think I've ever read any of your posts just the once. Top shelf. nothing cures a hangover like a bean burrito and battlebots. yesterday i was doomed from the start, anyway. rugby matches and free redbull and somehow i found myself at summerfest, pissed and surrounded by quasi-hippies bopping about to the big wu. there were balloons and bubbles floating around and a girl blowing glitter at everyone, and after a time it was sort of scary so i hid in a tree. from the tree, i could see there was a boy in the soundbooth who looked like sid vicious, and i was giggling about it so cherry ran over and told him and i think he was offended. he said "he was an ugly, ugly man" and forced a laugh. but if you don't want people telling you that you look like sid vicious, don't look like sid vicious. we were going to drink with the band after the show and cherry invited sid, just to be nice. he said he was "on too many drugs already," which was a bit creepy of him so i'm glad he decided to go home instead. after that someone wanted to go have a look at everclear and i felt badly about sid, so i went along and there gobs of sweaty noisy kids eating fried cheese and pogo-ing around, and i wanted to go back to the big wu but by the time we got there the show was over. i wish i had belle and sebastian gigs to post about. i think i am going back to the uk within the year. love love love (and bubbles) kirsten Care2 make the world greener! http://www.care2.com - Get your Free e-mail account that helps save Wildlife! +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. However, the gig was fuckin' brilliant, the sky was overcast which just made the atmosphere almost perfect as they played Exit Music for a film, if it started to rain then it would have been eerie, or when they sang "rain down on me..." etc. Everyone looked into heaven hoping that it rains which was probably a first time. I fought myself right up to near the front to realise that I can't see sod all there because of tall people, so I had to fight myself right back to the back where the slope enables me to see some bits. Tall people, please don't attempt to dance in gigs, your head occupy a large enough area WITHOUT it moving about. I suppose I should thank tall people really cos after last night, my leg muscles are larger than that of the love-child of Anne Widdecombe and Venus Williams, after an hour and a half of tip-toeing exercise. Long kisses, lulling ones short ones on and on and on like it is in heaven. Funnily, in a public place I wouldn't give her a second glance. Up close she was a beauty... a beauty of intimacy and fun and happiness. Still... as we washed each other I knew we'd never see each other again... that moment... the long amazing moment that punctures a life into episodes... was stolen from another place. I tell everything to sinister like it's like a confessional and I'm not even catholic. Perhaps that's why. No priests and no god to go to. I think she came to me... but that was only last night. Yesterday was a blur of snooker-baize and new old faces and some local knowledge picked up from Sir Alec and other assorts on the old and new ways to build domes (evidently they used to do it using a central pole... scaffolding came in later) and, contrary to all the published editions, it was a Robert Tannahill and not Burns who wrote 'Jesssie The Flower O' Dunblane'. but it's more Milton's 'Il Penseroso' on my mind: _Sweet bird, that shunn'st the noise of folly. Well, it all started when the man who played pedal steel on Carriage Clock read my last post. Ah, was he flustered- I assured him no personal offense was meant but I couldn't soothe his rage. He may have possibly been drunk when he told me that if I didn't leave town within twenty four hours he'd show me what else he could do. I'm not sure what he meant by that. I think he was still drunk. So I went to Maine for a week. When I got back he was considerably calmer and he accepted my apology. Just kidding about the pedal steel guitar player story. I really went to Maine for a wedding. Again, no offense to the guitar player. Especially if he's an alcoholic. One night I slept on the couch. I had my first Belle & Sebastian dream! It was amazing. Dream one (hehe) involved me at a show like you lucky people. I went back to Stuart's house afterwards. It was so real. I asked him if I could talk to Isobel and he said no, she was pregant. Oh, I said. That made me very sad. And it was all very real until a spaceship came down, and Stuart said, time to get out the spaceship gun, and I said, damn, there's no such thing as a spaceship gun, this is a dream, isn't it. And then I woke up. Dream two was pretty special. Timothy p.s. The new Rufus Wainwright album is lovely. p.p.s. There is no p.p.s. p.p.p.s. Now I remember. Did someone send me something about some Crushlink gibberish? Hey all, Brazilian MTV just premiered the Jonathan David video, and i'm still trying to calm myself down enough to post. It's a great video, made even better by the fact that the VJ, who also is vice-prez of B&S's distributor here, said there was a slight chance of them coming down here to our sunny shores later this year. But he wouldn't say anything more. *fingers crossed* I've settled into a sad winter routine of late nights and late afternoons, completely skipping that whole "morning" bit i vaguely remember. I got a wisdom tooth out, so I get to be frighteningly hamster-like for a few days. It wasn't that bad, and I shouldn't complain, but I do it so well. Are there any Sinisterines in Denver? Or near? I'm going to be there for 2 weeks and i'd love to meet some lovely Sinister folk. What happened to one of the two new songs they played at the Glasgow Uni gig? It was mostly a two chord affair with hard-to-hear lyrics but having a line that sounded vaguely like "i dont live in my house anymore" or something. Anyway, it seems they've given up the song, or maybe it'll be on the next single? It's surely not one of the Peel tracks, though. If any of you want my suggestion of a good band (okay, so probably none of you do but here goes just in case =)), check out Call and Response. http://www.kindercore.com/car.html I won't say they are as good as B&S, but then again few bands are. The band list for Benicassim lists Big Star, is this *the* Big Star? I'll be even angrier at myself for not being able to make it to Spain if they are. I've been on a big 50's/early-60's rock'n'roll lovey-type songs kick lately. Some of it's brilliant (Rhythm of the Rain, Breaking is Hard to Do) and a lot of its totally crap. For some reason I had a vision of Belle & Sebastian rocking out to "It's My Party and I'll Cry if I Want To" (or however its called). Anyways, I'd better get going. I'm sure I have something else to do. it is still hard to believe that i finally succeeded in failing out of university...it took more effort than i had imagined it would. now i find myself wondering why i went to the trouble. yesterday we went to the countryside and fed the sheep. they all loved the watermelon and seemed to be having a lovely time munching away on it...all except for one little sheep who, upon receiving a large slice of melon, made a loud angry noise, spat it out in the dirt and, glaring at me, peed all over it. that was my favourite sheep because i probably would have done the same thing. i mean, i pretty much peed all over university. kirsten "did i listen to pop music because i was miserable, or was i miserable because i listened to pop music?" Sinister: Anyone Can Play Guitar (but not like Nick Drake)

Hi All, I feel a bit naughty, as I haven't posted in half a year... I never went to the concerts so you won't hear any gushing praise from me :-(. I've been touring a play with some friends, called Raindance. It's about domestic violence so it's a bit heavy, but the soundtrack is great: 1) Eels- Climbing Up to the Moon 2) Counting Crows - Colour Blind 2) Longpigs - On and On 4) Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining Maybe not your cup of tea but I like them. I chose the Eels. After we had finished me and the girl I watch nervously from afar sat waiting for her bus. You know that feeling you get when you share Ribena with the one you love? I don't know what to do with myself, so I just came home to my music collection. All in all its a nice collection to have, a guided tour of my life in 80 CDs. I must say I quite like the new B+S single... Especially the last two tracks, and Jonathan David is growing on me. I've just finished reading Patrick Humphrie's biography of Nick Drake. Poor Nick. I've got his 3 albums, and I'm trying to learn guitar like him, but I can't play like him no matter how much I try. Mmm, just strumming for me. Speaking of biographies, I'm reading the Lives Of John Lennon by Albert Goldman. Has anyone read this? I must say it's upsetting me tremendously. I knew John was a bit nasty, but he can't have been that bad surely? Plus I dont think Mr. Goldman is very sympathetic to his subject (quite obvious when he starts to describe the Beatles as 4 little Dildo's). Oooo. I should stop reading it but I can't, I don't have will-power. Sorry to waste your time, if any of you have made it this far down my post. Has anyone any plans for a picnic in Newcastle or Durham?
