hi.
i know there is some ambivalence about radiohead in this list, but i saw them
tonight at Radio City Music Hall in new york and they were great.
unfortunately afterwards i stopped by the Cherry Tavern, downstairs from my
apartment, and saw all the really cool people from the neighborhood who make
me want to scream. oh, those cool people. they are models and such, christ
what a nightmare. tomorrow i'm seeing blonde redhead (any fans out
there?)---this is a band-ful weekend. hardly any time to hang out with the
falling blossoms in central park.

No crappin on Cornwall, I'm genuinely interested in the place. It does
indeed sound interesting. I would love to see it but know not when I'll be

This one I really don't understand myself unless I am supposed to be a
matchmaker....I've never dreamed about my friend Tara before. So Tag,do you
like gothic red-heads who love Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco and wear fishnets
and have their tongue pierced?
Dr.Minka...I've had a great many dreams that i can still remember..did
anyone else here dream of jim carrey or am i just weird? i used to have
consecutive ones...one time, elisabeth arden (that makeup company) was
throwing this rich fancy party and jim carrey was there, and so was i and
suddenly i started running and i ran into a house in the suburbs and i just
sat down and told this boy 'i've met jim carrey'..and all of a sudden i'm
like 'woah..gotta use a phone' so i went upstairs and there was jim waiting
for me! I'm like 'what are you doing here?' 'waiting for you' the next one i
was in this little american suburban town talking to this neighbour girl and
jim just walks up and i run away from the girl and cry out 'JIM!!' he gave
me flowers and a bracelt made out of rope and wood and we started singing
the theme of 'in living colour' together and hugging....I don't
understand..but that was awhile ago..but i still remember them...i don't
liek jim or thinks he funny...why?!?
and this other one! it was such a nightmare at the time,i was going out with
this very surfer boy and he threw me into one of those bins at department
stores (that always have lots of socks and underwear on sale in them?) and
made me kiss him...it was like being underwater..except...being under
packages of socks...and then he told me he could do this trick on pppl and
make them hypnotized and i believed it worked then he told me to follow him
and we were at this big display..a pyramid of bottles and bottles of
foundation (that beigey makeup?) and he's like 'Find my shade bitch!!!' and
I was trying so hard to please him but i picked the wrong shade and he
became very angry and i helplessly tried to do that hypno trick on him,(to
calm him)but of course since it was a sham it wouldn't work. And then he made
me try on mickey mouse boxers,it sounds ridiculous now of course.
I order Arab Strap album and it's like 36 dollars...grrrr....
ok i'll go

Hi all!
I had read that B&S were going to be in Spin's top 40...and goodness it's true!
I don't like Spin and various other magazines and usually whenever I see a
band I like in them I always get a little angry cos..well various reasons
that i won't get into..
BUT when I saw the little B&S...I felt actually happy..i think Stuart
Murdoch looks beautiful in that picture, the teeny little smile..awww...i
felt such an overwheming love for him and his voice when I saw that picture!!
Anyways..I didn't really care about what they wrote but here it is anyways:
Belle and Sebastian are indie rock's most notorious shrinking violets. They
refuse to be photographed, shun reporters, and rarely perform in public.Even
becoming a band at all was something of an accident for the Scottish
collective.Each year,Alan Rankine,a onetime member of 80's popsters the
Associates, shows his music buisness class at Glasgow's Stowe College how to
produce and market a record. In 1996,the class picked a demo tape by shy
singer/guitarist Stuart Murdoch, impressed both by his meticulously
arranged,slyly funny pop tunes,and his ethereal,Nick Drake-like voice. "The
strength of the songs just pissed on everything from a great height!" raves
Rankine.A surprised Murdoch cobbled some musician friends together and
recorded the acclaimed Tigermilk EP."We thought it was okay," says drummer
Richard Colburn."Then record companies and fans started calling and we
thought,My God,what have we done?" They signed with The Enclave label, which
folded soon after the release of the excellent If You're Feeling Sinister.A
new record will be released by Matador this summer, but the band is still
devising ways to confound the public. "I'm going to suggest something daft
like touring the world's Holiday Inns," says Rankine, still a band
confidante. "That ought to keep them occupied."
(radiohead pictures everywhere in this thing! Today,in a very trendy
'ohmigod' shoe store they were playing Paranoid Android.I wonder how Thom
woulda felt about that...because he's always going on about how he turns on
the tv and sees ads for toasters and feels disgust...)
*sniff* My street poet friend didn't recognize me today..just cos i wasn't
wearing my miniskirt...so i got no true love poems today. But he met the
director of that famous opera which is performing at the nac now...limos
everywhere..so i was happy for him...i would like to be able to play B&S
songs very well on my guitar..i think it would be so nice to sit under the
bridge and be a belle n sebby busker...
kisses,
Genevieve
saw Nightwatch...that Nick Nolte is a creepy man!!!! And
Ewan...sounded..American! I didn't think he could do it...i much prefer
Scottish accent..mmm...redheads...

hey all ... just wondering if anyone on the list has copies of the
manchester shows (or any other booted shows for that matter) they might
be willing to trade ... i have some b&s stuff myself if you're interested
in trading, or just being my friend for life. yah.
ooh! i got my new SPIN and not only was B&S ranked 31 in the list of the
40 most vital artists of 1997, it says that B&S are planning to have a
new album on matador this summer. a pretty good article, if anyone wants
to read it and doesn't have access to SPIN i can transcribe it and send
it to ya if you ask me.

Hello Dear List,
Anyone else in the lovely American middle west care to convene in Chicago
or the vicinity for a spring picnic? Perhaps sometime in May? Please email
me privately if you would even be remotely interested in such an event so
we can start to organize something...
I HAD A B&S DREAM AGAIN. Weird, and I'm just remembering it as I sit down
to email the list. anyway, the gist of it was that I was working in some
kind of abused children's shelter and they were all watching TV and there
was some special on about this band who did all kinds of lovely
philanthropic things (for kids, mostly) and were garnering praise from all
over the place about their selfless acts of kindness. On the screen was
Stuart Murdoch, holding a little smiling kid in each arm, talking to the
camera about "the music of healing" or something. That's when I looked
behind me and realized that *they were filing the special right in the
shelter where I was working!* Before I could even scream out
"OhmygodStuartyou!R!U!L!E!" and go rushing over to say hello (never mind
that I would be interrupting some kind of live TV broadcast), I looked
towards the back corner where a new group of lights and cameras were being
set up...and in moments, it was Stevie Jackson sitting there with his
acoustic guitar singing "Wrong Love." I nearly died, as that song is one of
my favorites. So I headed over to the corner, singing along as I walked,
and when I got to where he was playing, sat down right near the cameras and
watched him sing. Then Stevie heard me singing, and smiled at me, and after
he was done with the song he turned to me and said "Hello, you bonny wee
lass, come away with me." And then I woke up, and noticed I had worn my
olive green argyle socks to bed...
ok, just kidding about the sock part (Dr. Minka reference there).
I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in Chicago spring has
certainly sprung. Skies are blue, winds are breezy and cool, and the sun is
warm on your shoulders. Weather that would be the perfect accompaniment to,
say, the release of some new B&S stuff. Katrina and/or David, is there any
breaking news about release dates? I'm sure the list is poised and ready
to, at the very least, undertake a new round of "Sonic Confusion" and share
our lyric mishearings.
Well, I'm off to do something productive like finish the tapes she promised
people a month ago (sorry! anyone who was expecting a tape and thinks I
have been totally delinquent, which I have, please email me if you have any
concerns/questions about the tape stuff.)
bye bye,
Swannie

Right! I've been lurking for a while, but it's time to break cover. I'm
starting to feel like a grubby voyeur, and since no-one''s on the list at the
moment...
Introduction.
Sebastian Brennan, 18, unemployed actor, professional daydreamer. Moving to
London in a few months.I used to have a dog called Belle, but we had to put
her down.(She went mad).
That NME thingie said..
>their songs perfectly mirror
> the tribulations of a long-neglected section of the record-buying public.
No! The thing that suprised me about this list was that it's not full of sad
obsessive failiures.(Well, there's one or two of us..) And I know loads of
different people who are B&S fans, so I don't think there's a "type" of fan.
And their Gigs have such a variety of people, all ages, both sexes. So Ggrrr!
Don't pigeon hole us!
Still, we shall see at the picnics....if they're going ahead, that is.
Info?
Right, back to the bushes...
Seb.

wondering that as you are the sinisterines, would you give us lot blow

NO! i did not mean this! all i wanted was for a niiice little
cheerleading group, to sing about the joys of spring and such like, but
NO! you HAVE to be PERVERSE! and its ....for gods sake, you are belle
and sebastian fans! you have to be winsome and charming and sweet, not
obsessed with SEXUAL FAVOURS! there is more to life you know.....(so
they tell me)
and the answer is, we save it for the band. ha. ner ner.

hello.
my name is brad. i was introduced to the belle and sebastians from my
mom, who quite fancies krokus and says they sound just like them. for
fun, i give blow jobs to football players to give them a little "pep"
before the big game. i also have these recurring dreams of a naked and
jolly tag frolicking through the garbage dumpster behind the local jack
in the box eating, well, slurping, anything he finds and letting it run
down his stomach, across his navel, and drip down his well endowed
member. oh, and i have seventeen testicles.
it's been a while huh? that was for any new people who might have joined
in my absence.
actually i never left. i have been deleting upwards of 75 mails every
other day from you lot for about the past two and a half weeks. i've had
no free time you see. but now i'm back in the fold. actually i stuck
around only to see if anyone would speak poorly of me thinking that i
had fucked off and wouldn't hear it.
so what's the latest on the new album or a new single? have i missed
anything other than sad songs, ink polaroids, and dreams?
it's good to be home. i feel like crying a river.
