Dear all,
I have tried for one and a half hours, and I cannot access the Belle and
Sebastian chat room. It is now 4 o'clock, and I am despairing. My favourite
band in the whole wide world are at this moment in time talking to fellow
fans, and I cannot. I loaded the Virgin software, went to the Virgin place
at port 6667, or whatever it was, but I could find no room even remotely to
do with Belle and Sebastian. I even went into many of the other chat rooms
and asked if anyone knew were it was, interrupting intricate conversations,
and cybersex rituals as I went. Sadness.
Can someone please tell me what went wrong????? Did anyone else have this
problem???? I must know why I have been denied such a privelege.
Your disappointedly,

Hello Listies,
i have finally waded through all the posts from the past week and have
had a thought about Le Pastie .. . As I was singing it, maybe (thought
i) what was meant was a *pastille*, instead of a pastie. then i'd guess
it'd be like a mint/fruit drop which might make sense. anyway, maybe
not. (a fruit drop of the bourgeois?) help me out francophiles?
until later that post i, bravely before the dc wind go i...

Pictures to the Wall
by Langston Hughes
Shall I tell you of my old, old dreams
Lost at the earth's strange turnings,
Some in the sea when the waves foamed high,
Some in the garret candle's burnings?
Shall I tell you of bitter, forgotten
dreams--
You who are still so young, so young?
You with your wide brown singing eyes
And laughter at the tip of your tongue.
Shall I tell you of weary, weary dreams--
You who have lost no dreams at all,
Or shall I keep quiet and let turn
My ugly pictures to the wall?

And I thought no one would pay attention!
Okay, even though I'm just about dead from cynicism, let me just claify my
Stereolab/Sleep the Clock Around comparison. The straight-ahead bass lines with the
matching drums are practically Stereolab trademarks, not to mention the arrangement
which has no verse or chorus and the repeated melody line. Plus, Sleep the Clock
Around is (you have to admit) very unusual for a Belle and Sebastian song. Most of
B&S's faster-paced songs have a soul or folk feel, but STCA has a total Stereolab feel,
and is definitely the product of the 1990's, which ,again is pretty unusual for Belle and
Sebastian.
Believe it or not, I'm on David's side about thinking that Belle and Sebastian sound like
Belle and Sebastian. I'm certainly not saying that B&S are Stereolab rip-offs or anything,
but I don't think it's at all insulting to say that a band's song sounds like something else.
Just about everything (well...everything melodic and catchy) is going to sound vaguely
like something else, but that doesn't mean that it's not unique.
Hmmm...speaking of vague...
Apologies for being cynical. I was actually just sort of joking around (with the harshness
at least) and, as we all know, it's pretty impossible to convey tone of voice in an email
message.

Well, this has probably been covered by now, but Elliot Smith used to be
in the Portland-based band Heatmeiser. From what I understand, he was not
a primary songwriter in said band, which was more punk than Smith's solo
stuff. Anyway, as Smith began to write more, he released several solo LPs
(_Roman Candle_, _Elliot Smith_, and _Either/Or_, in order). The last 2
are on the Kill Rock Stars label. The first is somewhat harder to find,
forget the name of the label just now. Mounting tension regarding Smith's
growing prominence as a songwriter supposedly contributed to the break up
of Heatmeiser in, I think, 1996. At first, Smith was thought to be a Lou
Barlow clone, at least by fans of Barlow. Certainly, there are similaries
between early Sebadoh/Sentridoh and Smith's work. Anyway, I don't hear
people complaining much about that anymore. Smith's last two LPs are
pretty highly regarded in American indie circles. The _Good Will Hunting_
sndtk contains 4-5 songs from _Either/Or_ and one new one, "Miss Misery",
which has been nominated for an Academy Award. I heard Smith will be
performing at the Awards, but don't quote me on that.
Some B&S (as promised!)- Recently, a group of y'all (led by Clem, whose
contributions I also enjoy on the GBV list) have been contending that the
_Tigermilk_ version of "The State I Am In" in vastly superior to the _DOW_
version. I feel just the opposite. The subdued T-milk version slips
under my radar, but every time I play the DOW version I yell "Goddamn!
That's a great song." Then I go back to the T-milk version, thinking I
must've missed something, but no. I just like the more fleshed out
version better.
So there.

That's a great ep. BLT works at both speeds, but I don't think the other
three songs are as dynamic. And how annoying was it when another down-under
female-fronted acoustic based band came out a few years later doing the same
exact song...and they ended up getting a record deal out of it.

OK guys.... what should I do....
Last night (the 11th) I'm walking back from seeing Steve Coogan at
the Royal Concert Hall. It's not bad. Then this guy comes up to me.
he is Australian and smoking a menthol fag....
Here mate- he says- I've got this flatmate and she's seen you around
town around three times. And she's just chickened off down the road
OK?
Me: (kinda worried ina nice way) OK
Well what I'm going to do is give you her phone number and mayve you
can call her. Her names Natalie....
So I took the number. Now I *know* I would never forgive myself if i
didn't make the call. But how? When?
And what do I say do I arrange to meet? Where? And what if (gulp) we
meet and I really don't like her....
On the plus side the guy seemed really nice so she can't be that
bad....
This is the most Belle and Sebastian thing that has ever happened to
me.... And my love life really does need sorting out....
Yours,
(belatedly pornstarnammed)

OK I've been scared to put this out to the list, but I now think its
time has come: Century Of Fakers reminds me of REM slightly. I think
it's the backing vocals, the interval between the notes or something is
very characteristic of Mike Mills' BVs for those wacky Georgians.
It's just little sections of songs which remind you of others. It's not
as if any B&S song is lifted wholesale from anyone else's (or their own)
works of art. It is, however, interesting to see what connections other
people make between the muzak we all so adore and other stuff. We're
all happy bunnies and I'd like to stay that way.

Just switch off your television set go do something less boring instead.

New Game.
*************
It's called "I'm an absolute paranoid shambles". Sometimes known as "Spot the imaginary axe-murderer".
What you need :
*******************
1 x Personal Stereo (CD Player if you're posh).
1 x Tape / CD of IYFS.
1 x Very poorly lit street in a dog-rough town like, I dunno...Exeter ?
Playing the Game :
**********************
After a night out, (not necessarily drinking or partaking in substance abuse, though I imagine this would add to the ambience) you need to be walking your way home in the very poorly lit street described above, listening to your IYFS tape/cd described above on your personal stereo/cd player described above.
Forward wind through Stars of Track and Field, Seeing Other People (not stopping to question Sturot Musgraves sexuality) and Me and the Major.
The Objective :
*****************
Whilst listening to Don't Look Back at ridiculously high volume, count how many times you unwittingly turn around to see who's following you !!!!
Let's just say I hold the record for a 200 yard stretch of road at 27 times.
The Major Flaw :
*******************
Obviously If YOU are counting how many times you turn around, then you are going to be aware of actually doing it and thus are going to be tempted to cheat and make it all up. So why not ask a friend or even a relative along to count for you and double the amount of fun for everyone.
Belle and Sebastian.....Quality fun for all ages.
