Hello,
Well, no one responded, and I'm impatient ;) So, I found the archives
(they worked great but were a little difficult to find, as you could
infer) and checked out some show reviews on Andy Dean's lovely site.
Probably made some mistakes. Probably left some stuff out. Correct me
please in either of those cases! Anyway, here are all the covers I could
find that B&S have performed live.
"I'll Be Your Mirror" (the Velvet Underground)
"Like A Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan)
"Reel Around the Fountain" (the Smiths)
"Something on My Mind" (the Left Banke)
"Matchstick Men" ? (I was a little confused on this one)
"In A Nutshell" (Orange Juice)
"You Must Believe Me" (Curtis Mayfield)
"Rowboat" (Beck)
"Some Candy Talking" (JAMC)
As I understand it, a couple of the songs were only performed by one or
two members of the band. Not real clear on that...

>>Q: If a soap opera was made about the band -what would it be called?
Oddly the other day I found myself stuck at home watching :::blushes:::
MTV's soap "the Real World" (about 7 "real" people put in a posh
apartment for a few weeks and having their lives taped) and half
wondered if they couldn't get Belle and Sebastian to do the next
season.... there's enough people, after all, and it couldn't possibly be
any less interesting than the last few casts they've had...
(...going off to hang my head in shame & jealous of those who got to
take part in the irc chat...) t.

a few random thoughts on the chat this morning:
Was that really Belle and Sebastian we were talking to?
Is there going to be a transcript of the craziness in #sinister, which was
more interesting than what was going on in #jeepsterrecords?
Why was Stuart D so pissy?
Stuart M - what really is the 'saddest song'?
Why were there more ops than normal people?
What made susannah's questions so brilliant ? (no disrespect, Sus, but it
was escaping me)
What is a poof?
that is all. I'm sure I will have more as time passes and the scars linger.

Hi,
Sorry to post this to the list, but I'm in a bind. I'm writing a paper on
Nike (thesis: Nike exploits women workers in the Pacific Rim), and I
desperately need some legal type of help. If there are any lawyers reading
this, or if anyone knows a lawyer with email and could forward this, I'd
reallyreally appreciate your replies, as soon as possible. The more
answers, the better. When replying, please include your full name,
credentials, the agency you're employed with (if any), your email address
and your office address. Phone number is optional. Send all replies to
tinystar(a)worldy.com.
Basically, what I need to know is this:
1. Define 'exploitation'.
2. Is it up to the parent company or the contractor to enforce labour laws?
3. Should it be the parent company (Nike) or the individual factory owners
who take the blame for rights violations?
4. To what degree is a company responsible for the goings-on it its
factories, in instances where work is contracted out?
5. Should a company ensure that its employees are paid at least subsistence
wage (in instances where this may be above minimum wage)?
6. Can employees be forced to work overtime? Is it reasonable to
reprimand/punish those that do not wish to work overtime?
7. a. What is usually done when a company's employees register complaints
(such as being verbally abused, forced to run laps around the factories for
not meeting quotas, not having adequate medical care available in the
workplace)?
b. In a case where it is discovered that the accusations are true, does
the parent company (in an outsourcing situation) have the right to enforce
its own consequences, or must they be dealt with legally?
8. Is it within the realm of the law to request that a factory be closed,
after receiving countless reports of rights
abuses?
9. Is it legal for Nike to wash their hands of the responsibility for the
treatment of workers, in a plant that is ultimately operated by them?
Thanks so much, and please remember to include your name, credentials, name
of company, company address, and email address. And reply privately -
tinystar(a)worldy.com.
truly,
jessica

Do I detect the merest spark of doubt? I found it a bit deflating myself,
but would never dream of saying so because a lot of people were trying very
hard to make it work. And I suppose it did work, I just prefer the old
Saturday Superstar all sit round and put your hand up approach. Anyway,
apparently it's going to feature as part of a phone-in debate about uses of
modern technology on Radio Port Talbot's popular lunchtime slot "The Barry
Yorath Report". Birmingham-born Barry is said to be very disappointed by the
absence of Sturgeon Musgrave, whose records he has been inflicting on the
citizens of Port Talbot for some time. A dedicated thrillseeker, Barry is
now investigating gay and lesbian newsgroups.

<hrmph>
I discovered too late that my chat software didn't allow me to post my
questions, so I never got to ask them to the band before the
free-for-all.
For the record, here was the list I'd wrote:
Q: If all the Mr. Men got into a fight, who do you think would win?
Q: If you were a super-hero, what were your super-powers be?
Q: To the males: Esther Rantzen or Anne Diamond?
Q: Who's best? - Gary, Robbie, Mark, Howard or Jason?
Q: Your home is burning down... what do you try to save?
Q: When was the last time you all fell out?
Q: If a soap opera was made about the band -what would it be called?
Q: If you bumped into Steven Wells in the street, what would you do?
Well, *I* thought they were good.
<sigh> Maybe next time.
Rod.

Indeed occassionally little things jump out at you and you think it sounds
like something else, often other people can't see it mind you. Sleep the
Clock Around I don't think sounds much like Stereolab, it's too good for a
start, but I can see where the guy is coming from, the repetitive bit. On
the other hand I don't find it difficult to see the Suicide influence on
Stereolab, that and Kraftwerk and several other German bands - having said
that i haven't bought a Stereolab record since 1993, and I hardly listened
to it then either.
Some B+S songs I think do sound a bit like others but often it surprises
me the number of them that just don't. Personally I find the Nick Drake
comparison pretty shallow and simply based on their voices being vaguely
similar, same goes for Love, not really like Love at all, except Dog on
Wheels. Mayfly I think sounds like "Pleasant Valley Sunday", but I'll bet
no-one else thinks that.
Yours is no disgrace,
Keith.
