My first reaction at the publication of "Shine on" was enthusiastic (remember that non english-speaking people tend to put the lyrics at the bottom of their evaluation standards), but the first LP and the singles'compilation left an impression of vague dissatisfaction in me. >*** bickers was a genius: did anyone hear any of the levitation >records?*** I didn't like their cd, but every time I listen to The Cradle's "Second nature" on the Volume 16 compilation I'm puzzled by the way it always strikes me. Sinister: Belle and sebastian on the radio

Just to let you know that this morning, for the first time, I've listened to a BandS song on an italian radio. It was "Mayfly" and it has turned my day (although rainy) on. Is this the beginning of the BandS globalization? I imagine them making commercials for some cola (perhaps Karamaltz or Chinotto), hugging some Royal or presenting their movie. Sinister: on going chadwick debate

Guy Chadwick, could have been a contender. There was a point when it looked like HoL were going to be massive. They had the boy Bickers on board and many, many FX pedals. And yet as has been pointed out they had some really bad moments. 'specially on the lyrics front. I would like to nominate 'Love in a Car' as Chadwick's worst moment, nevermind all the dubious oceanic metaphor claptrap, the man obviously believes there is nothing wrong with rhyming far and car. This is only a step away from the maybe, baby, save me Noel Gallagher school of song writing. Sinister: Pastels this sat...

Considering how many pastels fans there are her...probably loads, are any listees planning to go to the Garage this Saturday? The exceptional Novak are playing, along with DJ kid Loco from Paree, so it promises to be magnificent. Also, who could forget Future Pilot AKA from Sunday night's Manchester show? Well they'll be there in all their rather silly avant garde glory, and I may heckle them if drunk enough. Sinister: Chadders

***Actually I think that both the B-Sides album and the Second Album are both brilliant, there's some great songs on both, and the B side album contains many songs that were intended for the second album anyway, also songs they did on their Peel Sessions (that Don't turn blue one). That "Came a cropper" one is "The Hedonist" which is actually a dead early song dating to the first release of "Shine on", there's also a cracking load of songs, Plastic; Flow; Welt; Nothing to me which are completely Ace too. Personally I'd say the House of Love only became shite at the time of the fourth LP which I remember came out the same time as the first Verve LP. I bought them both and was heartily disappointed by both of them. Another little gem which is worth paying a quid for the in the bargain bins is the 12" of "The Girl with the Lonliest Eyes" which has two amazing Chadwick original B sides on it as well as a brilliant cover of the Chills' Pink Frost. The B-Sides LP also contains a cracking picture of Chadwick on the inner sleeve in an amazing "vertical arms" pose. And the cover is a picture of his dog, "Sly Chadwick".
