Just out of interest Katrina, is Jeepster named after the T-Rex song?
Also, Paul, we going to meet Chris in the pub tonight then? 6:00 Berts, is
that confirmed?
Cheers,
Keith.

Hello,
I've only been on this list for a short while, yet 'Tigermilk' has been
mentioned quite a few times. Before I joined Sinister I'd never heard
of the album. I looked around trying to find it in the shops, but
curiously with out much luck. This month the magazine Record Collector,
had an article about B& S, stating, (what you probably already knew)
that Tigermilk was a limited edition 1000 print release - and if you
could find it - would cost 125 pounds...
...I read that and thought
...Bugger.
I'd love a copy, but not really at that price tag. Can anyone help? My
preferable format would be Minidisc. I could do a minidisc swap or pay
for postage and packaging, any ideas, whatever?
Much thanks
Benjamin

Sorry to bore you all with techy bits, but doesn't RealAudio and RealVideo
need a special, expensive server?
To add some relevant content: I like it when you can hear Stu singing in
Century of Elvis - it's something to listen out for.
Rather than whether the Manchester gigs were bad, I have to say that I found
Manchester hideous - all those big grey buildings just waiting to topple
over on you. The Sunday matinee was wicked - I loved it myself. Does
anyone know who the moody people who wouldn't clap were? Were they famous
or just very arrogant?
I thought the stage was good - I liked it like that - it was
less...confrontational.

It's just occured to me that "Lazy Line Painter Jane" might be a reference
to Hazy Jane, a character mentioned in several Nick Drake songs. It's quite
likely considering how often Stu Murdoch's vocals are compared with NIck's.
Anyway this kind of thing is important to me as in my view Nick Drake was
one of the most beautiful people ever to create music. Anyone else agree?

I am not sure exactly where the poster came from originally. Listee Amanda
gave it to me in return for chocolate from England. It is the cover of _If
You're Feeling Sinister_--very large and very red. The cover star looks more
distressed three times life size than on the CD booklet. When I asked Amanda
where she had procured such an enviable item, she ignored my question and
changed the subject, or I mumbled and she never heard me. The cats have been
ignoring the poster since it was hung up, but I am not sure I trust them
entirely. So apparently Stuart M. is no Orpheus and can not charm the animals
into submission (only some wistful humans).
Living and loving
Matthew

While in a music store today and checking out Belle info on one
of those machines where you can search for information by artist/song
title/record/ etc etc, I came across a bit of the "IYFS" review from
Rolling Stone: 4.5 of 5 stars! According the the computer, the review
was in the July 10-24(?) 1997 issue... so there you go... seek it out
and taunt your sis:-)
I would be inclined to comment that perhaps America's music
taste in general is improving, in light of how many truly good records
are making the critics' top 10 lists here... but then with most of the
ludricrous Grammy nominations today (not to mention what actually SELLS)
I think, "maybe not":-P.

Pardon me if anyone else has already posted this, but I recently was
skimming through Spin magazine and found that B&S's _If You're Feeling
Sinister_ was named one of the year's top 20 albums according to the lovely
folks there. Reading this praise of B&S would have been delightful in and
of itself, but my discovery of the little blurb in the January issue was
especially poignant because it provided an opportunity for me to prove to
my sister, Meredith, that I am not crazy for liking B&S. She hates their
music, and doesn't understand it can hold any sort of appeal for anyone.
"Who likes this crap?" she asks. So it was really nice to have the CRITICAL
ACCLAIM right there in print to rub in her face as we boarded the airplane
from Flordia to New Jersey. And then I was reading her copy of
Entertainment Weekly once we were airborne, and wouldn't you know it, there
was more good press for B&S: they were rated one of the year's best
up-and-coming artists (or something along those lines...the magazine
advised readers to look for them in '98). So there, Meredith!
In case anyone is interested, the complete Top 20 list is as follows:
20. Prodigy, The Fat of the Land
19. Wu-Tang Clan, Wu-Tang Forever
18. BELLE AND SEBASTIAN, IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER: and the critics rave,
"Teensy, but never a toy, not half as frail as their willowy music seems,
these Scots couple chaste songs to subtle perversions. 'Nobody writes them
like they used to, so it may as well be me," sings group leader Stuart
Murdoch, as these sad, swoony songs--nicking everything from Nick Drake to
bossa nova to Merseybeat--illustrate keenly."
17. Geraldine Fibbers, Butch
16 Daft Punk, Homework
15. Janet Jackson, The Velvet Rope
14. Various Artists, Return of the DJ Vol. II
13. Roni Size/Reprazent, New Forms
12.Erykah Badu, Baduizm
11. Pavement, Brighten the Corners
10. The Chemical Brothers, Dig Your Own Hole
9. Missy Elliot, Supa Dupa Fly
8. Yo La Tengo, I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
7. The Notorious B.I.G., Life After Death
6. Portishead, Portishead
5. Bob Dylan, Time Out of Mind
4. Bjork, Homogenic
3. Sleater-Kinnet, Dig Me Out
2. Radiohead, OK Computer
1. Cornershop, When I was Born for the 7th Time
Ah, it is so nice to be back at the old computer again. Over vacation I was
technologically deprived. Though not B&S deprived, as I had my CDs with me.
And I had a "near-gig" experience while we were in Disney World, at Epcot,
the Saturday of the Manchester gigs. I saw a rock band playing, and they
were all dressed in kilts and one was playing a bagpipe. "A Scottish band,"
I mused aloud. As close to a B&S show as I was going to get in Flordia. But
then the lead singer opened his mouth to introduce the band, and as it
turned out, they were not Scottish. Not even British. They were Canadian.
That's when I realized I had left the perimeters of Epcot's "England" and
had inadvertently wandered into "Canada." But anyway. I digress.
Ta,
Amanda
