well, at the gig in manchester, stuart m and isobel were
singing a modified version:
'everybody's trying to sell us
a century of elvis'
which was nice...
also, despite the fact the stuart d was reading the lyrics
from his book they were different. i think a large chunk was
missing, the bit about the mezzanine and the way karn would
talk to him, and the e-files bit...
also, paul made some amusing points about the stage layout.
what you have to remember is that there are 8 people on the
stage for most of the time so the stage has to be pretty
large to accomodate them all. glasgow qmu worked well as it
was kinda wide. edinburgh assembly rooms worked well because
it was kinda deep. oxford zodiac was neither so there was
that island with the keyboards on it (and was a shambles).
manchester was just plain weird though. yeah, doing gigs in
the round has been going on since before the globe theatre
was built. but usually the audience is around the players...
8)
(and yes, given that all the staging was brought in it could
easily have been arranged into a long, wide stage but i kind
of like the way they tried something different)

i think it's great that heaps of people are discovering B&S. but really
- does it matter who they are? does it make it any better (or worse)
that 'famous' or well known people like them.. does that make the band
better?

Hi!
I'm another newcomer to this list and i believe,
the first one from Norway! I've been a serious
fan of "scottish pop" for some years now,
( Early BMX Bandits, TFC, Captain America,
Eugenius, Mogwai, Urusei Yatsura, Arab Strap,
Delgados....) and my fascination for the "highlanders"
became even bigger when i came across IYFS
a couple of months ago. Since then i've bought practically
everything B&S. (got a copy of "Tigermilk" on Minidisc...)
Now on to my main message:
Theres been a lot of roumours (here in Oslo)
lately about some B&S gigs in Norway and Sweden.
The roumour says that the gig in Oslo was supposed
to take place in a big church in the center of town
called "Oslo Domkirke" in the beginning of february,
but has been delayed until late March due to som
venue-problems in Sweden.
The gigs in Sweden are supposed to take place in
Stockholm, Lund and Malmoe.
Does anybody else know anything about this?
Cheers
Stein Vegusdal

Someone said:
As a fan it was bizarre to be part of it, it didn't matter where
you were in the room your vision of the band at some point was always
obstructed and difficult. Surely for a band so 'fresh' it would have
been better and aided enjoyment if there was a more conventional
layout.
I imagine the layout of the hall was some kind of compromise between
the band and someone who lives in the real world... a conversation
along these lines no doubt occured:
B&S: This new gig of ours, we want it to be as WACKY as possible...
could we perhaps do it on the moon?
SITRW: Someone in the real world: Hmmm, no.
B&S: How about underwater somewhere?
SITRW: Hmmm, no.
B&S: What about down in a coal mine, the acoustics must be pretty
inconducive to pop music down there?
SITRW: Hmmm, no.
B&S: I know, inside a huge open structure, like one of those
inflatable gas containers... and we'll use FLAME POWERED AMPS!
SITRW: Hmmm, no.
B&S: Well, a high ceilinged barn that's short on atmosphere and where
you can't drink or smoke is a DEFINITE.
SITRW: Obviously away from London, you don't want to make it easy for
the press to review you.
B&S: Right, could you arrange the stage so that the band are in a
different room to the audience?
SITRW: Hmmm, no.
B&S: What about hanging us from the ceiling, in all four corners so
we're difficult to look at? Maybe the whole gig could be UPSIDED DOWN!
BONKERS! We could tie all the audiences to the floor, and gaff tape
their faces downwards so it's IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE US! And we could all
swap instruments after EACH BAR instead of just each song! And we
could roll dice to decide what song to play, but no-one is allowed to
tell anyone else what song we're playing!
SITRW: I know you don't like to compromise, but how about you do a gig
in the middle of a sunday afternoon in a church hall, with the stage
crowding round the audience, and the band all split up? It's not
perfect, but it's quite inconvenient for the fans?
B&S: BRILLIANT!

Just the question I was going to put. Loads of good points have been
scored between the warring parties, but that's just what its beginning to
feel like - point scoring. A suggestion of more professionalism (gigwise)
leads to the idea that professionalism is the province of the bland
stadium rock monster, and all sorts of 'us Vs them' comments are soon
woven into the ever-growing argument
All bollocks of course, and even more so if,like me, you weren't even
there!
And Tag sums it all up:
>I certainly won't put up with any old crap just cos it's 'them'.
>If they make a shit record, I won't buy it, if they play a bad gig,
>I'll at least think twice about seeing them again.
>They haven't disappointed me yet
Nor me!!! My main fear - unjustified at the mo'- about the band
(and a way to change subject) is that they'll begin releasing dodgy
split singles (nigh on impossible to get hold of unless you are
super-obsessive or a 'Record Collector' advertiser) and import
only 7-inch accoustic twangings:
If this sounds ludicrous just look at the likes of Stereolab or
Sebadoh, and where Arab Strap appear to be heading.
personally, I find a likable thing (one of the many) about the
band is the availability, Tigermilk aside, of the records (in the UK
anyway) and they all sound professional enough for me!

Just thought I'd say, if you listen very closely to Century of Elvis, in
the bits where Stuart D is quiet you can hear Stuart M singing Century of
Fakers.
I only noticed for the first time last night.

Over the weekend I bought the new Pastels album _Illumination_ and a certain
Isobel Campbell plays cello on it. However, do not get too excited since I
have only heard cello once on it, but it is a lovely three seconds when you
do. And the rest of the album is lovely also. Two posts about Isobel is as
many days--does this nominate me for her fanclub?
In more serious news--my cat took a sudden dislike to my B&S poster that was
biding its time, rolled up by the bookcase, waiting to be hung on the wall.
One second they were both minding their own business and the next, my cat
Bridget had the poster in a death grip. I separated the two and sent them
back to their respective corners. I still love my cat, but I had to hang the
poster on the wall. No more repeated attacks.
Living and loving

Shit I nearly forgot. On Hogmanay a friend of mine who works in Missing
said that B&S were playing in the Halt bar that evening. A lot of people he
worked with backed him up. So myself and friends squeezed our way into the
bar and squeezed our way out again. No sign of the band but there was
somebody playing. We didn't stay to see if the band emerged later on.
If anyone knows if they did play or why I would have heard this rumour,
please can they reply.
I was so excited at the prospect as I couldn't get to Manchester but it
didn't work out anyway. sigh.
Don't you just hate the first lecture/day of work after Xmas???

Holiday were a four piece from Yale. They put out two albums on March Records
(chicago) and a third, after they had officially split up, on Spin Art. The
first album is a classic, and all three are essential pop listening. Josh,
the singer, did a solo show last year with the Divine Comedy in NYC and he
played Get Me Away From Here. . .
The band also played on the Jason Morphew album (Ba Da Bing Records). Seek
them out.

How unfair, it seems their videos get played on MTV Europe, but I doubt
one has ever aired here in crazy yankland -
Can anybody tell me if that's true????
I stopped watching 120 Minutes ages ago...
Hmm I bet if one did air it would end up on "12 Angry Viewers" so those
halfwits could tear it to shreds in favor of some ridiculous puffdaddy
or Bush rubbish:-(
(Or else it would be on M2 so that only the approx. 4 people who get
that will ever see it)
