I quickly read an article about a band called Holiday in CMJ.
They were recommended if you like B&S.
Does anyone know anything about them?
Thanks,
Andy B-)

HI
I just write to say that I've seen B&S once, last september in barcelona
and for me was one of the best moments in the past year. I think B&S is the
greatest band appeared in the uk for the last decade of fakers.

I didn't get to see the shows either, oh the dream of seeing a Belle and
Sebastian show! None of the bands I like ever come here, and when they do
come here I can't see them anyways because all the shows are usually 19+ and
then (if i go to sneak in or just meet them) all these posh girls in
fishnets carrying roses are evil to me cause they think I'm a
groupie/teenybopper.
Anyways,I'm gonna keep sitting here and "wishin' and praying' and hopin'"
we'll get some North American tour dates (seems pretty unlikely,if they only
play a couple of shows per year)
they are very welcome to play the snowy fields in Quebec anytime....hint hint..
kiss kiss,
Genevieve

Belle and Sebastian Sunday Evening Gig
--------------------------------------
I've just returned too Uni and suddenly i have my email powers
back, so i would like to wish the list a Happy New Year.
Having to read through nearly 900 pieces of mail has given me a
bloody great headache and a must admit the delete button has
proved a saviour. However...
I went to the Sunday Evening gig in Manchester and i must admit
that overall i had a great time. I thought that B+S played pretty
good. From what i've read from the list it seems that many people
were not overly impressed with the Saturday performance. This is
indeed a shame. I felt that Sundays performance was pretty good.
To be honest i didn't think B+S were superb but it was joy to see
them and at times they bordered on brilliance.
I do have one major query though...
Who's idea was the room setup?
As a fan it was bizarre to be part of it, it didn't matter where
you were in the room your vision of the band at some point was always
obstructed and difficult. Surely for a band so 'fresh' it would have
been better and aided enjoyment if there was a more conventional
layout. Maybe a more linear approach would have made the sound better
too or at least easier to handle. It was as if at times the band were
struggling with the whole setup. However... i felt the setup did give
the gig a kind of 'unplugged' atmosphere and was easy to relax and
'just' listen. That was cool.
I thought the set list was really good with some old favourites
and some new songs. The two highlights for me was that 'hush
hush' cover tune, haven't got a clue who that was by but it was
performed superbly, and secondly about three songs from the end
a new song with a catchy guitar riff, good stuff...
I think overall the band performed well but i can't help but think that
they made their task far more difficult by an obscure setup.
Personally i felt that did well with what they had but maybe they
should learn to walk before they run?
Out of curiosity, where did people(the travellers)stay in the end, i
arrived late in the city with my girlfriend and another couple and
after getting lost and bothered around the dark streets we decided on
the Portland Thistle Hotel. Now before you all start drilling me and
labelling a me rich bastard my girlfriend paid for this on Visa(she was
scared and cold), i was well impressed as you can imagine. I think
they (the hotel folk)were even more impressed with our dress and
particularly my Pavement T-shirt!!!
Anyway enoughs enough so i better be going.
If anyone has any comments go for it...
Rich

So...
Am I the only American Belle & Sebastian fan or what? Maybe they're not
Oasis-ish enough for our grunge-loving music consumers...it's so very
sad. Please tell me I am not alone.
Jaysen.

Phew! Back to the old Foundation Course grindstone after
Christmas Time (mistletoe and whining) and all the shenanigins that go
with it, I return to find a groaning mailbox, although not as bad as it
could be because of other impoverished studes wi'out computadoras for
the festive period and therefore not sending tons o' mail to the list.
Firstly:
BIG NEWS! On Christmas Eve I got an unconditional offer from
Oxford Uni for the Fine Art degree...Yipee! Hoorah! Assorted
expressions of glee and merriment! I can now become a posh cow and
justify my previous pretensions...not really, I'll just stay the
middle-class cow I've always been and enjoy it so there.
Secondly:
Blimey! Heated debates a-go-go on t'list between those still
umbilically-attached to their computers over Christmas or what? I
didn't go to ANY of the gigs, you sods(my tiny hands are frozen, orphan
face pressed up against the glittery window of B&S gigdom), so I hope
you feel shamed into appreciating the marvels and incompetence which you
were fortunate enough to witness. Toujours gai, Archie, toujours gai...
Thirdly:
Being a flautist of some renown(ie. people see me coming, say,
"Bloody Hellfire, it's her again" and scarper) and having nothing to do/
For a minute or two, the other day I set myself to learning the
flute/xylophone/whateveritis solo from We Rule The School. Christ!
Emajor! That, children, is four(count 'em) sharps(hence somewhat of a
bitch to play at first), ut did I let that daunt me? No! I can now
grace any recital of your choice with this twiddling wee thingie, for
all the use that's ever going to be. Suggestions of any other B&S (or
anyone else for that matter) twiddly bits for me to while away the hours
wrestling with would be appreciated.
Fourthly:
Well, that's about it for today, children, so I'll just sign off
while simultaneously also swearing my eternal devotion to the great god
that is Stuart Staples' boozy old voice(as this seems to be de rigeur on
ye olde liste these days), second only to our own deliciously-weak reed,
the Murdoch himself. Well, that was a rather long email for me. I need
a cup of tea and a lie down(for which I will require to actually go
home). Therefore: tata fer noo.
Lots of something,
Liz (edaplynr3n00297(a)kiadroch.kiad.ac.uk)

Just some commentary from a jealous B&S fan in the states:
Imagine my surprise to come home from sunny climes and see a brawl here, when
I thought there would be all sorts of exultation and that I would be turning
green with envy.
And I say, "Go Duke!" :)
It sounds like the shows in Manchester were much like the 3 shows here in NY
last fall. The first, the PBS taping, was very rough. The band was set up
rather awkwardly in a sort of open circle and the sound was all over the
place. I was sad that I couldn't hear the vocals, as I am a "lyrics" person
pretty much, but I didn't get pissed off at the band for it. I thought they
were pretty much shy and nervous and actually found it pretty endearing (being
a mom and all). They knew it wasn't all that good, because someone wrote an
apology for the show to my son with their autograph.
I would have been livid if I thought the band weren't "trying" or were taking
the audience for granted, but it was none of that. Just seemed to be
awkwardness and that just happens. They seem to want to do things their own
way and that is their right. Eventually something will click, and there were
moments of that.
By Sunday's show, they were superb! It met all my long-built-up expectations,
and everyone seemed more confident. Again, as a mom-person, I was relieved
for them.
I didn't see the Saturday show, but the consensus was that Sunday was the best
of the three, as in Manchester.
I just felt kind of lucky to see the "progression" from awkward to beautiful.
It's that way with bands you love: sometimes they give a crap performance,
but you go with that knowing you'll hear something wonderful another time.
There are some performers that I see over and over and I can't imagine a
perfect performance each and every time -- you're dealing with people, not
programmed robots. They don't owe me anything at all. The fact that they can
make beautiful music is something I'm willing to wait to hear. If one isn't
ready to accept that with this band, then it's just time to say they aren't
your cup of tea and move on. Quietly.
If your perspective is not only musical, but "technical" as well, then maybe
you get pissed off that things weren't done "right." I've been at shows that
were so badly run that the evening was a complete hell, but I rarely blame the
band. More often the crowd for not adapting to it and making it bearable, or
whatever. You can always sail right out the door if you don't like the
experience and can't make it something you enjoy.
Well, just had to put my 2 cents worth in. Much as I love a good brawl, I
hope I didn't extend this one any farther than it needed to go....
