Ah, that would be my cue then..."hi, I am new". Erm...I won't
start by saying how much I love B&S (although I do), since
I'm sure everyone here does if they're on this list, but it
is very nice to find so many other people in on the secret.
I only heard them for the very first time yesterday after
picking up "If You're..." from HMV on a whim (I have
a strange habit of buying albums by groups I know nothing
about and have never heard just because I like the cover of
the record), and after a couple of listens I was already a
devoted fan for life.

The Smiths are my favourite band by a big margin so this isn't
very impartial advice, but...I'd recommend pretty much anything
by them - you can never have too many Smiths albums. Louder Than
Bombs is a good intro since it includes about 24 songs, but here's
the full album list:
The Smiths
Hatful Of Hollow
Meat Is Murder
The Queen Is Dead
The World Won't Listen
Louder Than Bombs
Strangeways Here We Come
Rank (live album)
Plus the inevitable "Best Of..." and singles collections.
Moz's solo albums are a bit more variable in quality, but Viva
Hate and Vauxhall And I are probably the best.
On the subject of other bands, are there any Tindersticks
fans here? I first heard B&S mentioned on Marbles (the 'Sticks
mailing list) about nine months ago, and I would image there's
quite a crossover between fans.
bye...

Well Aadam, I couldn't resist the urge to do a little research on this,
starting from the perspective of someone who knew nothing at all about Left
Banke. I went to www.cdnow.com (an excellent site, BTW) and searched for Left
Bank as an artist, found the correct spelling and a CD called "There's Gonna Be
A Storm" on Polygram which says its the complete recordings 1966-69. And
there's a track called "I've Got Something On My Mind". So there! It had a
pretty harpischord backing (on B&S's version, anyway).
Happy New Year all.

hey ho,
i went to the sat gig and well ok i was aware of some dubious sound
quality (esp during get me way from here im tie dying ) but um i was
right under stuarts nose and apart from a few glitches had a great
time.. - bar the moshing girls just infront of us (you know who you
are).
any b+s gig is a good gig. its not like they tour/play live all the
time so i was happy enough to see them fumbling around on stage.
all the people i met were pleasant and nice and things - special
thanks again to paul for the beat petrol tape - glad you enjoyed the
santa ..
and remember kids love dont hate...
happy new year

Hello all
I've noticed quite a few messages on the list about the gigs, so I'll try
and keep this one short(ish)...
Sunday... the day I'd been waiting for for a long long time! It began with
a six hour coach journey from London - nice! through the rain and traffic
and Birmingham, eventually arriving in Manchester at about 4. We went to
my friend's flat, and then caught the bus back into town, stopping at a
vodka bar, where I partook of a 'dime bar' flavoured vodka - hmm... won't
be trying that one again!
We got to the Square Albert pub at about six. "Erm, it doesn't look
terribly open", "no..." ; sure enough, the designated meeting place was not
up to much. We hung around not sure what to do for a while, listening to
some people in the square celebrating Hannukah (i think), until some other
people turned up also hoping to get into the pub (hi Soozy, Kate, Sally,
Andy and lots of other people whose names i have forgotten - sorry!)
To pass the time, we went to play on the Ferris Wheel (sorry Stephen, it
really was a Ferris Wheel, not a pub!), then went to the pub afterwards,
making it to the town hall by about half seven.
Wow! what a building!!! It's a lovely gothic thing with spiky bits all
over, and a somewhat 'flat' inflatable Father Christmas, and cartoons
projected over the outside walls... inside there was a jewellery
exhibition, and upstairs was where the bar and band area was. The hall
itself was wonderful, with a superbly ornate ceiling and lovely Holman Hunt
oil paintings adorning the lavish walls. A perfect venue for a perfect
band! and the stage was in the shape of a U...
After a bit of milling around in the bar area, Future Pilot aka began their
set. Erm, did anyone else find them a bit strange?? I really didn't get
what they were all about at all! Maybe I just wasn't being receptive
enough, but still...
Then, the moment we were all waiting four... the band ambled on stage, and
started tuning up; a few moments later we were swaying to the gorgeous
strains of modern rock song, followed by the state i am in - always brings
tears to my eyes that one. and so on and so on... even when isobel's
'cello broke the rest of the band managed to keep us all entertained by
very amusing ad-libbing (and god! the guitar bit to le pastie really is
from Emmerdale farm!)
It was a superb show, everything fell into place, and i loved every minute
of it. Does anyone have a set list for the sunday? As far as I can
remember they did 'modern rock song', 'the state i am in', 'the loneliness
of the middle distance runner' (the first time i'd heard that - i love
it!), 'she's losing it', 'century of elvis' - that was lovely!, 'judy and
the dream of horses', 'seeing other people', 'sleep the clock around', 'you
made a young boy very sad' - is that the correct name?, 'dylan in the
movies', 'le pastie', something about matchstick men (?), that orange juice
song that isobel sang so sweetly, 'seymour stein', and a few others that
either i can't remember or don't know!
Wow, what a night! See you at the next gig - hope to meet more of you
then!
love you all
Rob xx

Okay I am not going to swear in this email but I am very, very
tempted.
I was slouching on the sofa, watching MTV Alternative Nation. It was
playing Cornershop's ' Brimful of Asha on the 45 ' , which out of
interest is a good song. At the end of the record I began thinking,
"Belle and Sebastian did a video for Lazy Line Painter Jane. It was
shown on the ITV Chart Show. I wish it would come up next"
This is not something I usually think and to my utter amazement at
something that just couldn't be a coincidence, the opening tones of
' Dog on Wheels ' came on!!!!! What are the chances of a Belle and
Sebastian video being shown at any time. It was so weird. First
Belle and Sebastian promo I have seen before.
The video:
Okay it is basically shot in a slightly fuzzy tone. It might feature
members of the band ( I dunno what they look like - damn those
Manchester gig-goers!!!) but who knows. They were searching for a
Dog on Wheels and thats it really. Not the best description really
but there was a wall with the following graffitti: "La Pastie de la
Bourgeoisie". Wow!
Okay - next bit
I figure that if there are now over 400 people on this list ( + I
keep seeing " hi I am new " messages all the time ) then someone must
support Nottingham Forest, like me. Also I suspect that the most of
us are british considering B&S's well...y'know...scottishness.
Also has anyone been to my home town? It is near Heathrow. It is
called Ashford and it is NOT the Ashford in Kent. Does anyone live
near me? Don't worry I am not an internet freakazoid! Just a yes or
no will suffice I don't want to meet up or anything. I am just
curious.
Also are there any Germans out there? I am doing A level German and
am gonna do German & Linguistics at Bangor in North Wales. Anyone
out there to practice german emails mit?
Okay - oh yeah - I am only recently into the Smiths. I bought '
Queen is Dead ' after hearing Cemetery Gates. What other albums
should I buy? I also got ' Southpaw Grammar ' by Morrissey for £3.99
which I also like. What good albums has he done?
In a tape swap earlier in the year. I made a couple of tapes of
Radiohead bsides for someone in Newcastle. I filled one side up with
Belle and Sebastian 'cause I'd run out of gloom from ver 'head. He
emailed me back and said he absolutely loved B&S and he has now
bought all there stuff (except TM of course!). I will now forever
know Lazy Line Painter Jane as
" that song wiv the bird innit "
as he so eloquently put it!
OTHER NEWS:
I was in a (proper) record shop in Twickenham the other day and asked
just out of interest if he had Tigermilk. He said no but told me an
interesting story of how his friend sold a vinyl copy for a fiver!!!!
What a mistaka to maka!!!!
Okey Dokey
I am going now
bye

As I mentioned in yesterday's rambling post, I swiped the set-list for the
Sunday matinee. Here it is:
Seeing Other People
Mayfly
Beautiful
Dirty Dream
Fox In The Snow
Tigermilk
Expectations
The Stars of Track and Field
Lazy Line Painter Jane
Seymour Stein
Simple Things
Middle Distance Runner
Something On My Mind
Arab Strap
Chick Factor is written but crossed out after Seeing Other People.
Something on my Mind was a cover of song by a band called Left Bank I think.
Does anyone have Saturday's? The following is what I can recall (I'm not very
good with picking out lyrics of new songs, especially with sound as dodgy as
Saturday):
Put The Book Back On The Shelf
I Don't Love Anyone
A Century Of Fakers
?new song
Slow Graffiti
?new song which started with Stuart David reading some of his scribblings and
ended up very strange
Photo Jenny
?new song
Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying
Is It Wicked Not To Care?
?new song with a line about having a stroke at 24
Like Dylan In The Movies
?new song
Rollercoaster Ride (I think)
One of the new songs was sung by Stevie (not Seymour Stein) and one was Arab
Strap. God I'm boring.

THE LITTLE OLD LADY AND THE BET
A little old lady went into the Bank of Canada one day, carrying a
bag ofmoney. She insisted that she must speak with the president
of the bank to open a savings account because, "It's a lot of money!"
After much hemming and hawing, the bank staff finally ushered her into
the president's office (the customer is always right!). The bank
president then asked her how much she would like to deposit. She
replied, "$165,000!" and dumped the cash out of her bag onto his desk.
The president was of course curious as to how she came by all this cash,
so he asked her, "Ma'am, I'm surprised you're carrying so much cash
around. Where did you get this money?" The old lady replied, "I
make bets." The president then asked, "Bets? What kind of bets?" The
old woman said, "Well, for example, I'll bet you $25,000 that your
balls are square." "Ha!" laughed the president, "That's a stupid
bet. You can never win that kind of bet!" The old lady challenged, "So,
would you like to take my bet?" "Sure," said the president, "I'll bet
$25,000 that my balls arenot square!" The little old lady then said,
"Okay, but sincethere is a lot of money involved, may I bring my lawyer
with me tomorrow at 10:00am as witness?" "Sure!" replied the confident
president. That night, the president got very nervous about the bet and
spent a long time in front of a mirror
checking his balls, turning from side to side, again and again. He
thoroughly checked them out until he was sure that there was absolutely
no way his balls were square and that he would win the bet.
The next morning, at precisely 10:00 am, the little old lady appeared
with her lawyer at the president's office. She introduced the lawyer to
the president and repeated the bet: "$25,000 says the president's balls
are square!" The president agreed with the bet again and the old lady
asked him to drop his pants so they could all see. The president
complied. The little old lady peered closely at his balls and then
asked if she could feel them. "Well, Okay," said the president, "$25,000
is a lot of money, so guess you should be absolutely sure." Just then,
he noticed that the lawyer was quietly banging his head against the
wall. The president asked the old lady, "What the hell's the matter with
your lawyer?" She replied, "Nothing, except I bet him
$100,000 that at 10:00 am today, I'd have The Bank of Canada's
president's balls in my hand."

Hi
Someone mentioned the Go Betweens, so I thought I'd mention them as well.
The Go Betweens
That's all I really wanted to say. Oh Amanda Brown, their rather fetching
violin/oboe player is in a new band around Sydney called Love Me, a Cowboy
Junkies-countryish-acoustic outfit, who are know to play the Hoey in Sydney
to cross-legged floor sitters, floral dressed types, and emerging hippies.
They are a marvellous band who have just released their second CD.
You probably knpw more about what Grant and Robert are doing, although they
have played a few shows around here. And Lindy the marvellous drummer I've
heard playing drums somewhere or other.
Anyhow I havent mentioned Belle and Sebastian, so I will now. Silently.
Hope everyone has a smashing New Year.

Yeah, that he sure is! Thanks for bringing back memories of B&S performing live
at the NYC gigs and visions of that fine-young-trumpet-playing angel.
