I'm so glad you had a nice London meet! People up north, do you want to
meet at a pop quiz somewhere?
And lancashire is groovey! I'm in Peston, anyone from this a way going
to Manchester gigs?
And Dog Faced hermans?!?!? (or something), you're pulling my plonker.
Seriously? I know people on his list know much more indie than me but
c'mon!
BTW THE ADAM AND JOE SHOW IS GENIUS!!!
Just had to mention that. I have taped 'ball ball ball footie footie
footie' from my TV and listen to it on the bus and piss myself laughing!
I shall get locked away soon, I am v.sad I know!
Does the guy who produces or something on their show subscribe? Could
you mail me as I write a fanzine and I'd love to feature them in some
way soon! please! and if they put expectations on all their tapes well
they are even more godlike than they are already!
au revoir mes amis!--

I smiled all over until I read Robert's mail further below.
Same here, even though I grew up with the Beatles and still appreciate them

"The rain it raineth" ... available on the "Humans fly" LP, "Menschen

Honestly, never heard of anyone hailing both bands ...

Oh shit. PLEASE don't tell me that this is the truth. I've heard rumours

this ... isn't there any anthusiast in London who may be of help ??? I can't

Nope ... you may know that Hannover is pretty dull ... "I live here for

fair enough. Incidentally, ER really reminds me of are those
McCarthy dance remixes-b-side of This Nelson Rockerfeller?- which worked
and didn't work in equal amounts. They, like ER, came as a real shock to
me at first, but I grew to love some of them dearly, as I do ER.
Also, I like a little hamfisted dabbling in other genres: like
the early Happy Mondays' take on funk, or the Fatima Mansions' version
of 'Shiny Happy People'. Doesn't always work, of course. Just ask Sting
about reggae. Or jazz, for that matter.

Even worse on Thursday of course. Not that I didn't like the Arab Strap song,
but he seemed to have decided it would be really cool and just like a real
DJ to attempt some kind of cack-handed segue that involved starting a new
track what seemed like about half-way through the other. Now my tape sounds
like I pressed STOP abruptly by mistake.
He just doesn't care about the kids does he?

>TO ALL THE UK KIDS!!!
>happy lancashire day!!!!!!!!!
>(honestly, it is.)
Just...don't, OK?
I know I have to live here and you don't, but there's no need to
rub it in;-).
It's freezing cold, raining and miserable. Yes, folks, it's
Lancashire, and it's not nice.
Unlike Lancashire cheese, which is very tasty, actually. Oh, and
black pudding.
I can think of no sensible B&S link to Lancs, except of course
the Manchester gigs and the mention of Liverpool in TSOTAF. Then again,
neither Liverpool or Manc are in Lancs anymore, strictly speaking.
And Widnes has always been in Cheshire, I think.
On the subject of Electronic Renaissance, I couldn't give a damn
abouit why or how it was written. I don't care too much about its genre
(and I would agree that generically it's a bit if a mess). What I do
care about is that it is a big beautiful welter of sound which gets me
just _there_ (y'know?). I love it. It's a popsong and a damn good one,
I'd say.
Of course. Sir Duke, if you listen to it wanting a cutting edge
phat-assed dance monster, you'll be disappointed. But did anyone ever
make any claims for it being cutting edge? To criticise B&S for not
making a noise like, say, Squarepusher (who was pretty much cutting
wotsit around the time of TIgermilk, I'd guess) is like criticising the
guitar songs for not being... I dunno, Ui or The Sea and Cake or
whatever. It's pop music and it's all good, as they used to say.
Of course, BelleanSeb, if you don't want to hear B&S do anything
other than guitar-based pop, it's not gonna sound so great. Fair enough.
No reason why you should like everything by any artist, and no reason
why you shouldn't listen to them for what you want.
I don't much care whether it's a spoof or a dig at 'easy to
write' dance music. I'm reminded of McCarthy speaking scornfully of 'An
MP Speaks', a shockingly gorgeous track on their first LP, saying they
deliberately wrote sickly-sweet music for it and how it was musically
weak etc. Not that I care(d) because I love(d) that song so much...
For my part, I think Electronic Renaissance is straightforward
damn brilliant because...I do. Although the line which says 'I'll go
funkadelic' always confuses me. I can't think of a less funkadelic-like
band than B&S.
Lastly, I don't love B&S for their guitar-led brilliance. I love
them for their brilliance.
It may only be in my head, but there's a difference.
If I type for much very longer, I'll be known as the boy who's
always typing.
