Here you go then James,
we were sitting in the living room on the sofa, the wrong way round,
looking out the window. it was quiet, and then in the car park across the
road we saw elvis - look, there beside the postman's van, looking in the
open door - he looked as if he was thinking about getting in, but then the
postman came back, and he swaggered off, up past the window and down the
stairs, and then to the bottom of the stairs right by the caretaker's
office, and he started licking the pavement. every night now since we
moved in that new house there's this noise outside the door at just about
half seven or eight o' clock every night. and if we go and look outside
the door, elvis'll be standing there waiting to be let in. and then he
wanders round the living room, maybe sits down on one of the chairs or
even lies down on the floor. he doesn't say much, he just lies there for
an hour or two, watching the tv. we talk to him a bit, and then about ten
o' clock, he'll go away again, and not come back until the next night.
there's a lot of lakes and stuff around here, around the house - although
it's right in the middle of the city it seems quite like the country, it's
been hidden - safe i suppose, made for night living. there's a lot of
squirrels and birds, and stuart says he's seen about nine foxes there when
he's jumped over the fence on his way to prior's road. sometimes you can
go out walking, and when you've been out for a wee while even you don't
know where you are anymore, so it would be pretty hard for anyone else to
find you. i suppose that's why he spends so much time there, that's why
he's come to live there, or maybe it's just the squirrels. i read about
somewhere that he likes squirrels quite a lot. there's these two videos
that we got for wedding presents - called the e-files, e-files one and
e-files two about how elvis is supposed to be still alive. and one time
when he came round we were watching one of those, but he didn't say
anything he just sat on the armchair. it was pretty much the colour of
it, and we watched it right through and then when it finished he just got
up and walked off into the mist and didn't say anything. the first few
times he came round i didn't speak to him at all, i wasn't really sure
what to say. pam spoke to him quite a lot - she seemed to know what to do
more than i do. they have quite strange manners, they just went through
your stuff and looked through it, then maybe pick something up and play
with it for a wee while, but they'd never make any comment about any of
it. seemed pretty rude to me. i just watched whatever was happening with
him - less than pam, she talked to him and then, after a while i started
to copy that, tell him a few things, not really bothered about whether he
responded or said anything back or not. i think the first time i spoke to
him we were sitting up on the desk and i said that i would tell him about
you, me and pam, and how it was that it we came to be living there. i
thought he probably liked the fact that we were living there because he
came round so much, so i thought he might want to know how it was that it
came about. we did it all over backwards until now. first of all we got
to know each other, and then we met, and when we'd known each other for
about seven years we decided to have an anniversary, and that went quite
well, so after the anniversary we had a honeymoon, and that went well too,
so after that we decided that we'd get married. that's why we're living
here now. i used to think my dad was elvis, but i haven't told him that
yet. i haven't told my dad either...
I know there are loads of mistakes in it... I'd appreciate it if anyone
could correct any of the more obvious ones, 'cos there are bits I just
can't seem to work out.
Love, Rob
P.S. talking about misheard lyrics, I thought it was '..there's these two
vineyards that we got for wedding presents..' and that confused me a lot!

even funnier, I've noticed over the last few months the odd mail
from non-Scottish listees who have fallen for the Scots accent, as
featured on Century of Elvis (and utilised by my good self up here in
Edinburgh). So maybe your agency could assume international status
and link up the hordes of Scots fans (all armed with Sean Connery brogue)
with all those lovely people.
Gawd, I'm bored.

apologies. I was on holiday in Sicily and would have gone through London
when you were at the Bill Gates-fest. The only bad thing to come from
such a break was downloading the 150-plus mails from you lot alone that
had piled high while I was in sunnier climes.

um, bits of everything:
the virgin suicides: i've read this as well, chosen from the
book club catalogue because i liked the cover but it turned
out to be rather good - all about the repurcussions on a
small town in america when one of a family of 5 oppressed
girls commits suicide as seen through the eyes of the
neighbourhood boys. was like a cross between 'stand by me'
and anything by anne tyler.
beatnik: they had a pile of these in dillons on trafalger
square the other dinnertime when i was in there. i knew it
sounded familiar but couldn't place where i'd heard of it
before. some old car on the cover or something?
international dating agency: bad idea. email is not the way
to conduct a relationship especially on days like today when
it's a public holiday over there and you know you aren't
going to hear from them tonight... or for the rest of the
weekend for that matter... sigh.
b&s session: um, having now heard lazy line without monica i
now see why people didn't like the real version. and last
night's 'sleep the clock around' was superb, nice to hear a
proper version (ie not live and mumbly). the lyrics are
finely crafted too, none of that sense of crowbarring them
into the song that i got with (some of the tracks on) the
last ep. has anyone had a stab at the lyrics yet, it's
probably the hardest to decipher thing they've done so far?
i have most of verses 1 ('and the moment will come') and 3
('in the morning') but verse 2 ('take a walk in the park')
is more gaps than actual song... i've also got almost all of
'modern rock song' if it's not been posted before... (yes it
has, it's in the tab section of the mailing list site)
thanks to andrea for offering tapes for everyone. i've done
it in the past but i had a bad experience and am reluctant
to start again - someone asked for a tape, not b&s but
that's not important. i told them to send me a tape etc and
they did. the tape was posted to me on the monday (this is
transatlantic postage we're talking here so it's going to
take about a week). on the wednesday i had email asking if i
had it yet. on the friday i had another asking if i had it
yet 'and why aren't you answering my emails' (because i'd
been out the office and i had nothing to tell). i did the
tape on the sunday morning and posted it back on the monday.
and that's it. never heard back from the person concerned,
no thankyou, no nothing. ungrateful cow. actually, thinking
about it, all the people i did b&s tapes for were great and
i still write to a couple of them...
and steve lamacq was worse than ever last night. i've
decided he must die...
yep, arab strap breeze block was good. can't remember a
single thing they played now though. oh, something from
'pod' by the breeders, some more stuff...
ok, have a good time those of you who'll be in london
tonight.

I stayed in Larbert, before moving to Wallacestone (in a privately owned
house, which makes me a complete snob, at least according to the whole of
Graeme High School (or so it seemed))!
I still frequent Falkirk quite regularly, especially Firkins, where Arab
Strap can be found most days, if not at Pennies Indie disco.
Oooops, only my second mail, and already I'm completely off-topic. To get
back on, can anyone tell me if the B&S cartoon t-shirts are as cool as they
look on the merchandise page???

spelt with a 'g'.
Gina - Well, isn't it becaue jelly is a party food?

Hi ...my name is Rafa and I'm from Barcelona, Spain ..and I'm
totally..ummm..captured ?? fascinated ?? totally in love with the
Belle and Sebastian music .
This is the first time I write to the list ( I subscribed to it just one
week ago ).
I first heard B&S one year ago in the coolest spanish radio show, called
" Viaje a los Suenyos Polares " ( Journey to the Polar dreams )....and
since then they've become one of my favourite bands (together with the
rest of lovely scottish bands I adore, like Teenage Fanclub, The
Pastels, BMX Bandits, Eugenius, The Vaselines ...what's up with Scotland
?? something great ,sure ...)
Two months ago we were so lucky to see B&S playing a free show here in
Barcelona. The place was so appropiate for them, the front of an old
church in the Gothic part of Barcelona. Before B&S there was a trembling
concert by The Magnetic Fields (another unique band ), and then ...well
..the B&S show was totally ...I'm not skilled enough in english to
express what a unforgetable and .it was full of emotion.....the place
..and mainly..the MUSIC...all of the audience felt in love with the band
at that moment. It was a free show and ther was a lot of people in the
audience who had never heard about B&S but even them were in silence and
enjoying the show. It was REALLY ........pure emotion ..I could get the
tracklist and I saw some guys recording the show with a video camera and
since then I'm desperately looking for them all around the city to get a
copy ...From that day ,
a lot of people here in Barcelona love them.
My request is : any of you owns Tigermilk ?? I know it's totally
impossible to get a copy of it but if you are so lucky to own it
......would you be so kind to record it on a tape and send it to me ??
I would send you back something..I own If you're feeling of course ..and
also the threee singles but I need to hear Tigermilk :-)))
That's all ....thank you ...
Rafa ...

Is there anyone who will be travelling from Cumbria to Manchester to
see B&S on either the 27th or the 28th? (Probably not because no-one
in Cumbria will have a computer, and the chances of finding another
fan in the county are negligable, but, hey it's worth a try).
I've got no-one to go with because all my mates despise B&S.
Ed.

Well hello there
It's only common courtesy to introduce myself....I'll keep it short. I'm
Sarah studying for a PhD at Glasgow Uni in ummmmmmm, oh yeh, some sciencey
stuff. I've been browsing the list for sometime now without having much to
say, but I think it's time to break my silence.
Mick asked for an Arab Strap discography. Here's the website address for
all the information you require (I hope):
http://www.chemikal.demon.co.uk/hi-fi/bands/arabstrap/index.html
Just to back-step slightly re: claims to fame........I snogged Aidan Moffat
(Arab Strap) about 7 years ago......well it was New Year at Falkirk
steeple...and it's probably not a claim to fame anyway, as pretty much all
my Falkirk mates have done too!! Oh well, I have got Magnus Magnusson's
autograph! Does that count?
