duke and his copy of little ink movies i get up to go for
lunch and pass the pigeonholes by the door and there's
mine... good thing i'd already given up on doing anything
useful today.
one thing, there's a stamp on the envelope which is a plain
british definitive but it's actually in landscape mode
rather than portrait as it were, wider than it is tall.
never seen one of these before. is that what comes from

It's hard to take a position in this diatribe, it's stupid to think you can
be rational.
I feel like a metronome. Tic: I'm hiding in my cave with B&S, listening to
their/my music, sharing those feelings that are so mine they can't be yours
too.
Toc: I feel an urgency to disclose this secret. But......
take a look at the situation from my point of view. I live in a country
with a laughable minority of people interested in english pop and the
above-mentioned one is not very sensitive to this abnormal close encounter
between a pop music genius and a pop lyrics genius.
Don't get me wrong. Down where I live there's a couple of radio station
with quasi-good taste.
1-The youngest with too much Prodigy for my high blood pressure
2-The historical one, with many concessions to adult oriented rock (strange
definition)
We have some good record store too and yesterday Radiohead played here.
So, to cut a long story short, why do I feel like in a dream when you'd
want to scream and you can't?
Have you ever experienced this dualistic sensation of being happy like the
chosen one and miserable for not being able to show this beauty, to
convince everyone with the plain evidence of a B&S song?
I'm fighting between selfishness and altruism.
But, given the italian situation (no avaliability of any B&S cd or single)
do you think disclosing them to the public would be unselfish or subtle
selfishness?
Sorry for this strange message, but the truth is...I'm getting mad, waiting
the Rough Trade guys processing my order and sending 3,6,9:-()
Bye Giuseppe
BTW: What's happened to the Orchids?

I was supposed to be replying to R E W Butler privately but I got mixed up.
I therefore committed the twin crimes of not being off topic and also using
a rude word! Sorry for both transgressions.
Just out of interest however does anyone else on the list live in a far off
corner of the globe? Do you find it easy to get hold of B&S records where
you live? Here in Hong Kong we have 5 HMV shops and 1 Tower Records, none to
my knowledge have ever had B&S records in. I have had to rely on ordering
them from David & Katrina.
Regards
Richard

She did indeed sing with Thrum. I not sure if they're still together,
LLPJ is the first I heard of her in ages. They had an album out
"Rifferama" in 94 (i think) and the single "So Glad" which the music
press liked. I remember reading Monica's voice described as "Tammy
Wynnete with a hard on", an image which I have since tried in vain to
get out of my head.
I used to play in a band, and we practiced at the same time at the same
rehersal rooms as Thrum. I remember once hearing a lovely gentle voice
and investigating to see Monica singing to herself on her guitar, and I
was quite taken. Then the rest of her band arrived and it's like
"WWWWWAAAAAAaaAaAaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA". Jesus. I have to say it is a
remarkable voice to come out of someone so small.
I like her bit in LLPJ. I like it with a cringe if you know what I
mean. The same way as I find PJ Harvey attractive. She scares me but
i've started to like it.
That is all.

Not to turn this into a list about a small guy with a bad haircut, but this
reminded me about when I was young and silly (as opposed to old & silly). My
friend & I used to drive to Alice Cooper's house, a huge stucco mansion with
a cement roof, set up on a hill (rumor was there was a huge pit dug in the
living room). We would leave bizarre things like stuffed parrots and
fireworks on his gate. We believed that, if we heard the song "Kodachrome"
on the way to the house, we wouldn't get caught trespassing.
Oh -- I can indeed relate this to B&S: The person who first played IFYS for
me also confessed to driving by Alice Cooper's house, only he had to drive
about 30 miles to get there, and was always in trouble for taking his
parents' car so far.
Sorry to reminisce.

Dear all,
Just picked this up from the Galxie 500 mailing list which I
am also on. I wonder if anyone would care to reply to Mr
Campbell?
The Archdeacon of Pop.
From: mc8(a)uclink4.berkeley.edu (matthew D. Campbell)
Listened to Belle & Sebastion C.D., I think they suck.
They don't know how to utilize the guitar instrument, i think their
vocals are blaze'.
WHoever said this band compares with Galaxie 500 is a moron.
Keep the love,
mc

Subject: Re: B & S = bs
I'm all for a collaborative venture for this Rough Guide entry. My idea
would be to include something about how their music has spread around
the world, if there was a general pattern. How did the magic of B&S
first enter your hearts?? I'd like to know how they've been chanced upon
across Europe and in America, Canada, Australia, Thailand... Maybe this
isn't suitable for the guide but I'd still be interested.
I'll never forget being metaphorically (I was sitting down at the time)
stopped in my tracks by hearing The State I am In on the radio when Mark
and Lard did the graveyard shift on Radio 1. That would probably be
number 1 in my "Belle and Sebastian magic moments" list as well. I just
sat there thinking "WOW!!!".
So that's how I began. How was it for you. To take the pressure from
Paul's flu wracked frame [hope you're better soon] I'd be happy to
collate any info on this particular thread. So you can send it to me or
share with the group as you see fit.

Going back to first principles , this is obviously true. I shall now
gleefully burn all my records and never again part with my ill-gotten loot
to encourage any musician down the road to capitalist capitulation.
May the likes of B&S never share their wonderful wares with the world ever
again!!!
