I wanted "stringbean jean" to occupy positions 1-10.....
Until "stringbean jean" came along, no song has had a direct
impact on me since first hearing "about a girl" by Nirvana
(the live version on the "sliver" single to be precise) and
that was 6 years ago.

a vast crowd that includes the Beatles, the Tindersticks, Nick Drake, the
Smiths, Paul Simon, and the Lovin' Spoonful.
Paul Simon? Where did that one come from? anyone got any thoughts?
Never mind this top 10 songs thing (agog though I am to hear the
"winner"), perhaps we should also vote for top B&S moments. Here are
five of mine:
1. the way Stuart sings "because she wanted
informa-tion"... on Sinister
2. that wee voice going "I don't know!" on Photo
Jenny
3. the way the melody suddenly kicks in at the
beginning of The State I'm In, in a moment of
unbearable beauty, and then builds and builds
4. the last cheeky line of Centuries of Elvis
5. the way you're not quite sure if Stuart will
reach the high note on "washing up" in She's Losing
It
just a thought

Just kidding. Don't mean to be a jerk but I think it's sort of cheesy
to name unrealesed songs in your top 10. It's certainly your decision
but what's the point? Other than to let other people know that you have
them and they don't. I have a tape with unreleased tracks too but that
doesn't mean I'm a bigger fan it just makes me lucky. So here's my
"all's fair in love and domesticity top 10
[Keith Watson]
Ha ha - agreed... I can't really see any other reason that "Pocketbook Angel" would be in anyone's top ten.

Thanks for clarifying that one but has noone perhaps realised that
'Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie' could be a wry social comment.
A Pastie is associated with Cornish miners. It is very
much a working class snack. If the pastie in 'Le Pastie...' is such
an object (and the French do make all words imported from English
masculine which would explain the 'Le') then there could be a thinly
veiled meaning to do with the Marxist belief that Communism is the
inevitable future of society. Bourgeois ruling class eating working
class food indicates an equality of the classes that, according to
Marxism, cannot fail to happen one day. Hence, 'Le Pastie de la
Bourgeoisie'
Or perhaps it's a spelling error for 'La Patsy de la
Bourgeoisie'
Or perhaps it's just a title.
Oh well

Seeing as 'Seymour Stein' is making a few appearances in people's top
tens, I was wondering about the vocalist on this. I seem to remember
reading that this was one of the songs recorded for the last radio
session. Well, at the Barcelona gig, I am certain that Stevie took lead
vocalist duties for this song (and a damn fine job he did of it too). I
seem to remember a line that went something like "...said I reminded him
of Johnny from the Smiths".
So who sang on the radio session version? And are there any other
recorded tracks featuring different lead vocalists (besides Century of
Elvis)? And does anybody know the song that Isobel sang in Barcelona?
And does anybody from Spain know if the cameras present meant that the
gig was going to be broadcast on TV at a future date?
Oooh... So many questions, and not a top ten in sight (I'm still waiting
on my copy of 3,6,9..)

Paul Simon is a huge influence on Belle and Sebastian, and I credit this
reviewer for pointing it out. Paul Simon is a storyteller, a narrator and
Belle and Sebastian songs are full of narratives of a similar feel... I
feel like this puts them very lyrically influenced by Paul Simon. Nick
Drake's lyrics seem more full of self reflection and pictures being
painted. I am sitting here listening to the new Paul Simon record, songs
from his upcoming musical, "The Capeman" and some of these songs move me in
exactly the same way that Belle and Sebastian does. I urge you all to drop
any prejudices you may have, and give this record a listen when it comes
out next month. One of my favorite moments on IYFS, is "the snow is
falling" section at the end of Me and the Major which to me is more
reminiscent of Paul Simon than anyone else. Of course, when you discuss
artists that began recording in the mid sixties, like Bob Dylan, the
Beatles, and Paul Simon, their influences are so ingrained in every thing
we listen to that it does become a bit blurry. Sorry to go on and on but
the timing of this post coinciding with what I was listening to spurred me
on.

It appears that what Stuart means by this is not actually what it translates to. Oh well. Stand at the back of the class Murdoch! However, we all know from previous postings that what it's meant to mean is that
Le Pastie de la Bourgeousie is roughly translated as "The Apathy of the Upper Class"
(This phrase is turning out to be cliched in the same league as "The troubled mir space station")
Which does rather tie in with the themes in the song.
On a different note:
Having a B+S meeting on 1st Nov at the Egg in Edinburgh, at least, Pam from Washington is coming across, so if Nathan, John, Paul or indeed anyone else wants to come along, we'll meet up... In fact... I'll probably be spewing up... Well, it's only a quid 50 a pint! So it's not my fault.
Cheers,
Keith.
[However - Le Pastie de la Boulangerie provided me with many laughs!]

Sinister: B&S interview on Radio one.
>ben ferneyhough (bferneyhough(a)brookes.ac.uk)
>Wed, 22 Oct 1997 13:26:08 +0100 (BST)
>My heart just skipped a beat then, when B&S, well Chris and
>Sarah, were interviewed on 'The Net' radio 1 news programme
>just about a minute ago.
um, just to add that 'the net' is repeated two or three
times during the day so there's still a chance to catch the
repeat. i thought it was on the website in real audio format
too but couldn't find it. and there's nothing worth reading
under the news pages although that may not have been updated
yet. a transcription appears on bbc teletext though, under
the 560 music pages i think but again you may have to wait a
while. i'll forward it if i see it.
thinking about it, the first couple of eps were both
reviewed extensively on teletext but the current one hasn't
been. the first two were both mentioned in 'the face' too.
could this all be down to the confusion over release dates?

It needs to be something quirky and something which would be anathema
to "the starmaker machinery behind the popular song". I bought a BMX
bandits record once (shhh!) which had a little cartoon strip inside
and someone had handwritten in pen on my copy "I love you very very
much". I liked the personal element of this. I guess BMX Bandits sold
a lot less records than B&S are going to be selling ... maybe it would
be wholly impractical!
Here are some other ideas.
1. Bring back seventies car stickers! ELO did it, why not B&S? There
should be a B&S sticker in the back of every car in the kingdom.
2. Willy Wonka style "Golden CDs", 500 of which (e.g.) have a ticket
inside entitling the holder to a trip to, er, the Grosvenor Cafe...
3. Free flowers with every purchase.
4. Free tickets for next B&S gig.
5. Lifetime membership of Rolf Harris fan club.
6. "Introduce a friend" discounts and bonus system.
7. That's all.
