I'm jealous! Are you a Daniel Johnston fan? Are there any other Daniel Johnston fans out there? (I'm a big one, by the way...or so I've been told). Not particularly "on-topic", but the man is a brilliant song-writer, and possibly the quintessential "tortured genius". I think Belle & Sebastian should cover one of his songs - god knows which one, 'cause there's literally hundreds to choose from, all quite wonderful.
For those that aren't familiar with him, he's released......ooh.....I don't know really...... I must have 12 or 13 of his albums, and that's by no means the lot. Not even sure if he's still recording. Last I heard he'd been "institutionalised" (in a mental hospital) for the umpteenth time (he wanted to be as big as his idol, John Lennon, but couldn't hack the success (or lack of it?), and has spent much of his adult life in hospital). Many myths surround Daniel Johnston: once he was alledged to have pushed a woman out of a 2nd floor (?) window 'cause he thought she was possed by the devil. I was advised never to walk in front of him down a flight of stairs!
I'm not however proposing madness as a promotional vehicle for Belle & Sebastian! I think the band would be better advised to get friendly with a soo-to-be-deceased member of the royal family. Didn't do Elton any harm. I'd say the Queen Mother was a good bet.

Yes. The bourgeoisie in marxist thinking is NOT the ruling classes, they are a product of the dialectical cycle, created by the oppression of the upper classes. Marxtastically speaking it is the bourgeoisie who rise up and bring down the
upper classes, for a short time, until the proletariat take over. Let me hear ya say YEAH!

say we wanted to see b & s on totp or this morning or
or mastermind or countryfile or whatever, everyone on this list
could send nicely typed letters to whoever was in charge of the show
like the one below:
dear < name of bigwig>,
Belle and Sebastian are the tops, aren't they? Looking forward to
seeing them on your show soon.
Best Regards,
<name of assumed identity eg Brian Clough or Betty Boothroyd or
Christopher Biggins or Wayne Sleep>
but then again, one might get into trouble.
other promotional ideas:
b & s could make a video of themselves and send it to bbc 2 's video
nation "programme".
the picture discs was a good idea i thought. simple, a forgotten
notion.
in my old flat we had a projector poking outta the window to
advertise a dodgy manchester club nite and that has given me the
(shite) idea that everybody on this dedicated list could "borrow" a
slide projector and then make up slides of either this 'ere new ep's
cover or their own b & s related images being nice and artistic ,
i've got a nice photo of me in a " i broke my heart listening to
belle and the boy" t shirt, and then all around the country (indEED,
THE WORLD) walls and roads could be lit up with abstract rubbish that
98% of the population (is that a good stat.? or less?) wouldn't
understand and ... oooohhhhhhhhhhhhh...
get me away from here, i'm dying.
(hey! that's given me another idea! we could do a mass b & s
suicide pact to promote the new ep .... doh......)
t'other kate,
feeling mucho stupid this pm.

I've got a 10"LP thingy full of strange music by the likes of
The Tinklers, Daniel Johnston, Half Japanese etcŠ
Anyway, it came with a small brown paper bag (practical and above
all CHEAP) which has a silkscreened illustration thingy on the
outside. Inside is a collection of small printed cards like those
that wee kids use to learn their ABC, except the featured letter
on a card is the first letter of the name of one of the bands.
The reverse has information about the band.
B&S could adapt this sort of idea making really nice cards - they
won't have to be full colour or anything - and could have info on
each band member (mind you that would burst the bag!) or just things
that they think are cool (or anything at all, come to think of it).
The outside of the bag could have another cool picture on it.
You could even have a bag that could fit in with a CD.
How about a Belle & Sebastian 10" - I like 10" singles :-).
I don't think Picture discs are such a good idea as sound quality
generally suffers.
Coloured vinyl is better, glittery bits etc. even more so.
Byee!

Pavement also played the VU's "What Goes On" as an encore in Louisville, KY
this May, and then B&S played it as the encore to their first New York City
show in September, where Mark Ibold was in attendance!

On Oct. 10 during the final encore song of the night, pavement played
the Velvet Underground's "What goes On." During the song lead singer
Malkmus changed some words and sang "bells in the air/bells in the
sky/belle and sebastian/I hope you don't die." I am sure others at
the show picked up the reference, I am not sure how many others it
made smile.
Thought someone might be interested.

smile? surely this sort of thing ought to make any full-stomached human feel
a touch queasy. Sharply spotted, though.
slightly off-topic, but connected by way of someone's suggestion for a
promo-stunt (cover discs, to build up a fanbase of dedicated freeloaders),
did anyone get the free Time Out CD earlier this year? It had a little
number called Windsor Park by someone called Alfred which was fairly superb
(though the rest of it was the usual pile of pants). If anyone knows who the
christ alfred is, I'd be grateful.
cheers.

OK kids,
First of all, I'm really sorry if my message came across as a
bit shouty or angry or nasty or whatever. This was never the intention
and I'm sorry.
Charlotte: you should have put that private mail on the list. Reading
it put me right in my place: Everyone-yeah, I feel very humbled, as
Charlotte pointed out that I did get the spelling wrong: bourgeoisie,
not bourgoisie. Sorry.
David, Italian, eh? I dunno. I thought it was French. Itdun'tmatter.
Katrina, you're absolutely right about the textbook definition of
something not necessarily applying to an artist/musician or whatever,
and I do believe you when you said what Stuart said. Obviously you know
more than I do, and Stuart can say and mean what he wants. If there has
been a mistake anywhere along the line, I don't know where it has come,
but perhaps there is a popular misconception (and please believe me
when I say that this is not a criticism of anyone) in the
'right'/'proper' meaning of the term. Maybe, perhaps, erm I'm trying
not to be nasty, er, erm...
Anyway, whatever 'Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie' actually means:
a) we can draw our own conclusions from the song (and I also reckon
that *all* the definitions and stories that have appeared on the list
are going some way to getting to an explanation)
and b) I love Belle and Sebastian, and so by the looks of things do
quite a number of other people. Respect to each and everyone on this
marvellous list.
Again, I'm sorry (it was a rush of blood or summut)
Love,
GIDEONxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
