So, I finally got around to buying "3..6..9...." today on my
lunch break (and due to my compulsive and rabid record
purchasing ways, the excursion ended up costing me $86.76,
thank you very much.) Anyway I got it at Other Music in
NYC...they were very well-stocked on both 7"s and
cd-singles. I bought it on both 7" and cd, because, well,
because I'm compulsive and rabid.
On the artwork: I like it. I like the ultra-simplicity of it...I like
the wordlessness of it. I like the image. I'm glad they got a
way from that reddish tone which was washed over the last
few images. The white is nice and clean and bright, like the
music.
On the music: I've only spun the cd once so far, but I'm liking
"La Pastie..." best...something about the full, hollow-bodied
sound of the guitar, very western, I like that...something also
about Richard's drum and cymbal work...very nice. Then, i
think I like "Put the Book back on the Shelf"

I bought the EP yesterday in Our Price in Swiss Cottage (the nearest
record shop to where I work, which is usually unrivalled for the
poverty of its range but good grief, there the CD single nestled, next
to the ubiquitous Not Very Nice Girls. Heaven or hell for 1.99).
On first listen ... I don't wish to stoke controversy but I feel it's
patchy and not all of it was instantly resonant. Beautiful is coy and
may grow on me. Fakers is great and funnier than Elvis. Pastie is a
triumph. That's all I had time to listen to as I was making chocolate
ice cream and had to go out for dinner. Snap judgements I'm sure I'll
regret but I'd like to support whoever said (daringly) that the EPs
are weaker than the albums!
The Monochrome Set reference is a brilliant one. I'm glad someone
mentioned the obvious humour that permeates B&S lyrics, despite the
grossly unfair way they've been portrayed as the ultimate in fey
whimsy. B&S share that with the Monochrome Set - and with Momus, and
the Smiths. All misconstrued, but they'll have the last laugh.
I'd just like to say that this is a brilliant list and it brings a bit
of light to my grey work day.

>Which one's Rockaboom! then? I'm an Ultima Thule devotee.
More freaks pass through there than a Psychic TV concert.
At the risk of deepening Andy Dean's homesickness, and drifting further off-topic, 'cause.....err...... I reckon Utlima Thule is probably the last record shop on planet earth that'd stock Belle & Sebastian stuff (it's a great shop, but it specialises in "Krautrock" and prog stuff. Julian Cope name-checked it in his "Krautrocksampler" book, and can often be seen "hanging out" in said shop. But the guys that run it are, um....rather strange).
>Has anybody ever seen Will Oldham in action? Playing here on
Friday. Blimey, a concert!
Peter, where is "here"? Not Leicester, presumably. (Spiritualized are playing "there" tomorrow, oops...sorry Andy!). But yes, I have seen Will Oldham playing with the Palace Brothers (great band...sort of warped, self-indulgent country music) in Norwich about 4 years ago. They were supporting Tindersticks, with whom Belle & Sebastian have often been compared (phew, got back on topic!)

Peter,
I saw Will on two occasions in Nottingham. The first was
with a full band which included a middle-aged fiddle player
and was quite astonishing. Shivers ran down my spine during
'Ohio River Boat Song' and I was close to tears as Will sang
the line: "Hey my baby, don't slip away" during 'There Is No
one...". It was simply one of the most moving spectacles
I've ever witnessed.
The second time was just Will and acoustic guitar, sitting
on what looked like a small, wooden primary school chair.
The gig wasn't quite as good. Everyone laughed when he said:
"This next song is a Prince cover." Will looked bemused - it
actually WAS a Prince song, although I have no idea what it
was.

Other possible names for Le Pastie:
La pastille de la bourgeoisie.
Little candies that the middle class eats?
Le pastis de la bourgeoisie.
A clear Anise liquor that turns cloudy when mixed with water. Very popular among the middle class of the south of France.
L'apathie de la bourgeoisie.
My theory is that whoever wrote that graffiti on the Glascow wall was a distressed socialist who failed his/her last French exam. (And apathie is pronounced a bit like a Bostonian saying "a party")
Oh, and the story on the liner notes talks about my favorite record label mascot: The Postcard cat banging the drum! I've heard its artist was obsessed with drawing animals playing instruments and couldn't stop.
