hey. this is my first post to the list, and for some reason i've got a
totally b&s unrelated question.
is anyone out there a fan of the band MOOSE ? does anyone know if they
are still around? i have never been able to find anything about them on
the web, and i know there are a few non-stateside people on this list
who might know what's going on with them. you can reply to me personally
if you know anything.
on another note...i've been a long time fan of the tindersticks, and on
their mailing list just about every other post had something to say
about b & s. so, i got sick of hearing about what all the fuss was about
so i went out and bought sinister and lazy line painter. this was about
a week ago. i have now claimed them to be the best band i've ever heard.
one week. that's all it took.
they give me the feeling that i'm listening to something special. you
know, kinda like the first time you heard the smiths, or the first time
you heard felt, or, well, i don't know what i'm trying to say. it's just
been a long time since i heard a band that made me feel like this.

I'm living the same experience. And hearing If you're feeling sinister
right now. But unfortunately, for a french fan of B&S like me, it's very
hard to find the records : I have to ask my shop to purchase these in
England. What a pity !!!
And just a question : although I'm french, I don't understand "Le pastie de
la bourgeoisie". What does it mean ?
And last but not least, when will "3,6,9 seconds of light" be available ??
JP, a french guy alone on this mailing list (or it seems to be so)
PS : There is an other record I'm all the time hearing : Immobile. It's a
reord of a french group called "Autour de Lucie". Merveilleux !!!

Why can't I wear this record out? Has anyone else had the experience of
putting this record on every day for the past six months thinking you
might
tire of it but you never do? It is like a fix. Judy and the Dream of
Horses is the only song that has worn out slightly for me. I am thrilled
with the prospect of a long and prosperous career for these guys. Has
anyone heard a record they like more this year? The only other record
that
even comes close for me is Spiritualized's beautfully haunting LADIES AND
GENTLEMEN WE ARE FLOATING IN SPACE and Moloko's DO YOU LIKE MY TIGHT
SWEATER.
As far as gender issues, I think Seeing Other People is the best example
of
this. The song is really ambiguous. When Stuart Murdoch sings, "you'd be
better of going with girls at least they know what they're doing" he could
be talking to a woman or a man. There's a hand over his mouth because he
has to keep the relationship secret.... Still it is kept very ambiguous.
One of the newer songs had some ambiguities in it. I think that these
songs are the product of a more open minded generation and also probably
result in more Smiths comparisons. Morrisey liked to leave things vague
as
well.
How old was the violin player, by the way?

In answer to Keith Watson, Most mainstream is crap, mainstream is what the general public buy; and we all know how thick they are. Think how many genuinely good bands have been successful in recent years, I'll bet you won't get more than 10 or so, if that.
As Everyone is talking about Diana (well two are anyway) I Thought I'd send this taken from Private eye. It sums up a lot:
The late Princess Diana - an apology.
In recent weeks (not to mention the last ten years) we at the Daily Gnome, in common with all other newspapers, may have inadvertently conveyed the impression that the late Princess of Wales was in some way a neurotic, irresponsible and manipulative troublemaker who had repeatedly meddled in political matters that did not concern her and personally embarassed Her Majesty the Queen by her mediterranean love-romps with the son of a discredited Egyptian businessman.
We now realise as of Sunday morning that the Princess of Hearts was in fact the most saintly woman who has ever lived, who, with her charitable activities, brought hope and succour to hundreds and millions of people all over the world.
We would like to express our sincere and deepest hypocrisy to all our readers on this tragic day and hope and pray that they will carry on buying our paper notwithstanding.
By the way I'm not bitter about the fact that everyone is saying they saw B&S play live, not bitter at all. Can't you smell the satisfaction on their breath?

On the subject of cover versions, I'd personally like to hear Belle and
Sebastian covering Orlando's "Save Yourself". But then again, I would: I
wrote it.
I also read with interest the New York Times piece on the recent concerts by
B&S and Beth Orton that was posted here recently:
>Ms. Orton dedicated "I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine" to Diana, Princess of
>Wales, softly intoning such moving lyrics as "If I never saw the sunshine,
>baby, then maybe I wouldn't mind the rain."
I take it that the correspondant didn't realise that this was of course, a
cover version of The Ronettes' "I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine", recorded
in the 60s by Phil Spector but shelved until the numerous Spector reissues
years later...
I hate it when I know more about music than people who are paid to do so.

Various points from the last few days;
1. It is perfectly possible to avoid the new "Candle In The Wind" by
either finding a decent radio station (like London's new XFM, which
plays alternative music all day), or by just not listening to the radio.
I managed to miss the whole of Diana's funeral by being in bed
recovering from the night before...
2. Re cover versions. How about "Ziggy Stardust" or even Abba's "The
Winner Takes It All"? B&S could do a very different and extremely good
version of either.
3. For those who weren't listening / don't live in Britain, the Evening
Session played B&S's session version of "Sleep the Clock Around" (at
least I think that's what it was called) last night. It sounds like a
very promising song, but unfortunately I couldn't make out any of the
lyrics at all. Anyone help? Oh, and who was doing the female backing
vocals? Whoever it was had a much better voice than Monica Queen.
4. Is anyone out there going to the Camden Crawl next week?

Hello.
Me and Rachel were at that taping too, we waited in line from about 215
until 4ish
before we went in, we were quite near the front...
they seemed to cock up quite a few times but it was still cool..
Stuart Murdoch at one point said "anyone here from Britain", I kind of
shouted out
"I am" to which he looked at me, looked away and said "It's great
innit" and carried
on with the set..
Rachel and I were surprised though when the drummer who was taking pics of the
band turned and took a pic of us..though maybe it wasn't of us..
The set was far too short though it gave us a chance to hear some of
the new songs
again just in time for the Angel Orensanz Sunday gig where they seemed
'like old
friends' we HAD met.
Favourite new song is the Loneliness of the Middle Distance
Runner...good stuff.
I even like Lazy Jane now, that's cos I've seen it twice in a row
without Monica
singing...I prefer the Stuart solo version...
The actual programme appears to be on Sat nights at 10 ish on WNET which is
channel 13 on their cable thing, I watched the Daniel Lanois one that
Saturday..
B&S is supposed to be shown late November...

In The Groove Again was excellent...a good buy for 99p anyway!
I have never heard Cha Cha Cohen until last night..my princess
Rachel told me about them though, she had heard them in the US

My god, you Brits must be really spoiled with good music, cos I would certainly lose control of my bladder functions if I were to *ever* hear Teenage Fanclub, or the Boos, heck, even Ned's Atomic Dustbin on American radio. Never mind ever hearing B&S. Yes, it is *that* bad. Well, I guess that is why they invented cassettes.
I might say at this moment, that I am happy for, and extremely envious of everyone who got to see B&S in NYC, and I feel very alone here on the west coast. ::sniff::

I don't know who said XFM wasn't very alternative but I have heard
Man Or Astroman, Cha Cha Cohen, Elastica and countless other
wonderful tunes on it...Keith Cameron (is it him or Tommy Udo I can never
remember) who does the late night prog plays good stuff...
