AAAAAHHHHH!!!! Has anybody in Edinburgh recorded last nights song? Any
chance of droping a copy off to me (in Princes Street) some time? I'd be
very grateful and I've got a load of unreleased b&s tracks I could give in
return.
Cheers,
John S.

Figured perhaps they could record "Candle in the Wind" - this'd be a surefire number 1 in the current climate. Either that or plumb some other shit song about Diana just like Chris de Burgh's done and go for broke - looks like we'll be stuck with this at least well into next year.
Cheers,
Keith.

>B and S tracks on the Evening Session next week Mon - Thurs
Are these still on this week, or have they been moved forward with the
release date of the new ep? Was there anything on last night?
Cheers,

Yes, they're on all this week. Last night there was a new version of
LLPJ, without Monica wailing all over the place, which made a nice
change. There'll be tracks on each of the next three nights, sometime
between 6.30 and 8.30 (last night it was just after 8).
When is the EP coming out now?

Attenzione! Attenzione!
Belle & Sebastian are the tawk of New Yawk this week!!!
This precious collective kicked the ass of everyone who got to see
them at the PBS Tapings on West 54th Street and the Angel Orensanz
Center.
Understandably, they were visibly nervous at their first live
performance in the States. The audience was seated around the band
that consisted of 8 people, the 8th member being Mick the horn player
(who looked like he was about 10 years old). Stuart Murdoch leader and
lead vocalist is the oldest at 24 years old. He looks like an
androgynous, younger Richard Butler. There are 2 girls in the group
the violinist and Isobel the cellist (rumored to be Murdoch's
girlfriend).
The set was very special and intimate. They performed mostly new
material and tracks off their import singles. During "Like Dylan In
The Movies" Stuart nervously forgot the words and visibly upset
shouted "Does anyone have our CD handy?" So who saves the day with the
liner notes from the album? Chris the owner of Secret Sounds record
shop: (htt;://www.secretsounds.com)
Belle & Sebastian was the talk of CMJ all week. Their CMJ performance
took place on the Lower East Side at an old synagogue with cathedral
architecture. It's the sculpture's Angel Orensanz' studio and
performance space. It was very cool. The lights reflected off the disco
mirror ball hung where the tabernacle should have been illuminating the
high cathedral ceiling. For two nights they performed to a sold out
room packed with fans. It was gospel.
Belle & Sebastian is what it's all about. Amen.

"Up the Junction" as someone suggested I find a strange choice but curiously brilliant choice - never would have thought of it myself but I can hear them singing it in my head at the moment. Anyway, here's another few choices.
Inner City Blues: Marvin Gaye
Family Affair: Sly Stone
Shine a Light: Stones
Shaft: Isaac Hayes
Wrote for Luck: Happy Mondays
If the kids are united: Sham 69
Take care,
Keith.

I thought it might be interesting to note that covering of Smiths songs by
the band
is not such a far fetched idea.
When I recently had the chance to listen to the band soundchecking in
Colchester , Stuart soundchecked his vocals with 'Cementary Gates' by The
Smiths.
On a different point:
Although as everybody else I am a major B&S fan I would like to hear other
peoples views on the disorganisation of the gigs, sound wise. There was a
recent comment in this months Q magazine with although was a bit cruel was
to the point. Paraphrased it was that the band veered from beautiful and
sensitive to chaotic (organsiation wise). After sitting through their 4-5
hour sound check at Colchester (which was at times fanatsic at other
infuriating) I wondered if they were a bit too unorganised? The trouble
also being at the concerts themselves they seem to spend an age getting
ready for the next song not helped when they contantly change instruments
(although this is a very good virutostic thing ((I knew my music degree
would come in handy one day!!)).
Any opnions?
Ben

We went to the NY show in high anticipation -- and the show exceeded all
expectations! The Angel Oransanz Foundation was indeed a perfect venue for
B&S -- although a little ventilation would have been nice up front. We
talked to several of the members & crew afterwards, and they were all lovely
and gracious. They said they had a great time at Sunday's show, and thought
they played better than on Saturday, and certainly better than at the taping
on Friday. There won't be any more US dates this time out -- they return
home Wednesday -- but a tour is tentatively planned for next year, with West
Coast dates only planned so far. Apparently there will be another EP
shortly, then a compilation of all the EPs with maybe a couple of other songs
as well.
