To all:
By popular request (2 people) the frequency at which digests are produced
has now been changed to 1 per day.
Your list admin is off on holidays from Saturday for two weeks and I leave
you in the capable hands of David Kitchen - he will be able to approve
subscribes and unsubscribes that go wrong but not too much else as he'd be
inundated. Mail to owner-sinister(a)majordomo.net will I'm afraid fall down a
black hole until I return - but I am hoping the list will keep going,
digesting, archiving and whatever else it does OK in my absence. If not,
sorry, and I will pick up the pieces when I return.
If any French members of the list wish to recommend places to visit, drink
or lie around in near Quimper (Brittany) and Saint Lo (Normandy) during the
next two weeks by private post they would be most welcome!
Thanks,
Paul

P.S. Oh, and I will miss the B&S radio sessions too so if anyone is taping
one for Andrew Dean...

Just bought the new Arab Strap EP, 'The Girls of Summer' at lunchtime. It
guest stars Chris Geddes and Stuart Murdoch this time.
Oh, and it was single of the week in NME.

I ran into a bit of the Polar Bear confusion too a short while ago. I
vaguely recognized the name as being an indie pop band when I saw it in the
concert listings while in LA and my sister wanted to see the one of the other
bands on the bill so we went... when I spotted Dave Navarro in the audience I
realized it wasn't really gonna be my kind of show. Stayed through the whole
set as it was the band after them that my sis wanted to see, ahh they were
really bad.
Anyway hope all those going to the New York B&S shows have a great time,
and be sure to tell us all about it!

Aye - some guy pointed out to me that the bass player chap who used to be in
Jane's Addiction - his new band are called Polar Bear, so I dare say they've
changed their names to protect the innocent.
My friend Cymon was disappointed they were'nt the same band - he's a big
Jane's Addiction fan. >>

Just to let you all know,
a few people had said that my drop down menus were not working on some
systems and were basically hassle. Although I've chosen to keep 'em,
I've added a little something for everyone who has dificulties with
them... a text based site map.
The site map can be found by following the link from the main page.
--
Also, I've made a page for the compo (is no-one gonna enter?, this means
that our one entry is a guaranteed winner! even if we only get one more
entry it's still a 1 in 2 chance!) so that everyone who has just
subscribed is aware of it.
--
A few people had trouble finding the artwork for the next single (I'd
put the link on a drop menu), this can also be found from the site map.
--
And finally. I've created a basic form letting you give your feedback on
the site. It mails straight to us but only works if the mail program you
use is part of the browser package (such as Netscape).
--
This site is for you and anything you want to see will probably be
implemented.
--
Still creating a Frequently Asked Questions page. If anyone has a
question they want answering then just mail it to me at the address
below.

Regards
David Kitchen

I've set up quickly a rudimentary service to allow you to retrieve files
relevant to the mailing list via email. *** This is relevant only to people
who don't have WWW access!! *** Please if anyone falls into this category
let me know if this will useful and I will keep it updated.
At the moment all I've included is the chord tabs to the songs on the WWW
page and the intro/FAQ. To see what's there send mail as usual to
"majordomo(a)majordomo.net" and use the command:
index sinister
or
index sinister-digest
in the body of the message. If you see a file you like send the command
get sinister <filename>
etc.
I suspect there won't be much interest for this - surely everyone has WWW
access now? I only did it cos it was easy - but if there is interest let me
know. I can promise all you people with WWW access who have seen my WWW
page for the list it isn't worth bothering with so please don't try as the
info's all there already!
Thanks all for your continued interest in the mailing list and if there's
any improvements people can think of drop me a line...
Oh, and I promised to keep in step with the consensus view of list content.
This is swinging a little towards more chit-chat on the list - tangential
discussions from a B&S base! I think this is because of the decrease of
mails to a more steady level after the initial rush - so please feel free to
warble away.

Having listened to Nick Drake and Belle and Sebastian let me make the following (important ha ha) statement:
The similarities between the Nick Drake and B&S are primarily stylistic. The vocal qualities of Stuart's voice is a bit similar to Nick's, and there are similarities in some of the accoustic guitar songs. However, even here there are differences. Nick Drake has a super haunting quality in all the songs
that almost communicates a certain creepiness. His voice is haunting, and he has this real neat guitar technique that has the same effect. In terms of this, I would compare Nick Drake more to Tim Buckley or his son even. With B&S, the underlying theme I get out is innocence, love of their friends, and hope for a better world (which is probably why so many of us in the anorak twee community love them so much).
There are other differences. I couldn't imagine Drake doing a lot of the songs off Tigermilk (like Electronic Rennaissance, You're Just a Baby, or I could Be Dreaming). The only song on Tigermilk that has a bit of the Drake quality is Mary Jo, and just in the beginning.
Most importantly, Drake comes out of a completely different era and that accounts for a huge difference in the music. In summary, comparisons are warranted, but I suppose you could compare B&S to a lot of bands which might or might not do them justice.
