I woke up this morning groggy from a late night, came downstairs to check my e-mail before getting ready for work -- and here on the computer table was a copy of the new EP -- Good Morning!! Thanks Matt, who must've gotten it at Secret Sounds yesterday. So, I'm listening for the first time as I read the list, and so far it's "A Century of Fakers" that is catching me. That may be because I'm familiar with the melody already or just because it's nice to hear something pretty the morning after a David Bowie show. And I love the rhythm -- or phrasing -- of the words and music weaving together on this song. If this was the first B&S song I ever heard I would love them right away. (And back to an old topic -- the lyric sung is different from the lyric printed almost immediately.) I seem to recall the said instrument causing a few sound problems for the band at one of the Glasgow QMU gigs. And wasn't there some kind of "Stylophone orchestra" playing in the Eighties? On a different musical note, each time I hear "Le Pastie...", I am reminded of The Monochrome Set. It's in the tempo, the guitar sound......even Stuart's voice reminds me of Bid (Monochrome Set's singer, who was the son of an Indian Prince, or something). Mmmm.....another great pop band - anyone else spot the likeness? And Simon Tyers from Leicester........for heaven's sake, don't shop in HMV - buy your records from Rockaboom! I bought the 7" for 99p and the cd for 1.98. It's a MUCH BETTER SHOP all round (and I don't even work there!). Also go see Yo La Tengo at the Charlotte on Sat 8th Nov. Funny maybe - I always thought Denim were a bit of a joke - come on, I believe they even used the two drummers from the Glitter Band on 'Back in Denim' for that 'authentic 70's feel'. Of course 'Middle of the Road' is a great song, but has anyone listened to their more recent offerings - 'Denim on Ice' etc. - utter bollocks. I got sent the 'Summer Smash' single during the summer and (if I haven't swapped it already) you're welcome to it. The lyrics and delivery are cringible - matched only by that song they did - something about falling off the back of a lorry I think - last year. Q Magazine again... "Acoustically ambient church caretakers Belle and Sebastian are recording their third album in their home studio." I beg to differ. Church caretakers are not called church caretakers, are they? That bloke on Dad's Army was called the verger, I think. There's another word, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. I'll have to ask my mum. Paul... Felt... I've said it once and I'll say it again. Denim are much better. Or at least much funnier. And more of an influence on Belle and Sebastian. Sample lyric - "ah what's your name? - yeah mine's that too! " And that's just the tip of a very ample iceberg of lyrical genius. One of my favourite groups ever. Felt are a bit lacklustre in comparison, although I liked them at the time. I even had the honour of seeing them perform once. Lawrence is very small. Someone lowered the tone ever so slightly by shouting "Hey! That's the bass player out of the Long Ryders!" at the mother of all pudding basin bass players. Duffy (now tinkling the ivories with Bobby and the Screamies) was particularly miserable. Showed no signs of life whatsoever from the wrists up. Like a piano playing Nick Knox. I think there's a couple of compilations available, Bubblegum something and Absolute Bastard Classics. I believe they may have played their last ever concert in Greenock. Or maybe it was just their last ever concert in Greenock. As opposed to their last ever concert ever ever. Such is my love of Denim that I would be only too happy to supply you with a poor quality tape of durable Denim classics. Has anyone heard this new Norman Wisdom compilation? Having found myself so bores recently that I compiled my favourite 100 songs ever (The State That I Am In No.17,Stars of track & Field No.44), I had the opportunity to go out and watch Scarfo at the Princess Charlotte,Leicester last night. And on what day do you think I had a relapse of my cold on? Exactly. If anyone here works in Leicester HMV (which is a bit of a long shot,but even so...),can you reserve me a copy of 369 Seconds Of Light for next Monday,please? If I'm not mistaken (however I probably am), 'la pastie...' is a piece of graffiti on the wall right next to Greggs the bakers just off Byres road, so therefore it is about a cheese and onion pastie from the west end of Glasgow. I take it I'm missing something here but surely it should be "Le Pastie De La Boulangerie"?? I checked & in our La Boulangerie they're 80p for meat & 70p for Cheese. Seriously though, after turning the sleeves round & therefore covering up the barcodes with price stickers we sold only 20 less Belle & Sebastian EPs on monday than Spice Girls singles. We didn't sell a single 12inch though. Am I alone in wondering why you can't put four songs on a 7inch? Or at least make the 12inch the same price as the CD single (ours are a pound dearer <- sorry Leslie) As much as I detest cassette singles Woolworths won't stock a single unless it's on tape and so although your average Woolworth's record buyer won't know who Belle & Sebastian are your chart pisition is altered because their sales play a big part in the chart as does Asda's strangely. bye steve x ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
